Pakistan register first-ever Test series victory in West Indies

Posted:

ROSEAU (AFP) - Pakistan won a thrilling third and final Test with six balls to spare to clinch a first series victory in the West Indies Sunday and give a fitting farewell to the retiring captain Misbah ul Haq and veteran Younis Khan.Roston Chases unbeaten 101, his second hundred of the series, proved in vain as the home side, set a target of 303 at Windsor Park in Dominica, slipped to 93 for six before the lower order almost rescued a dramatic draw. This was just incredible, said a breathless Misbah after Shannon Gabriel dragged a wide delivery from Yasir Shah onto his stumps with just six balls left in the game to trigger Pakistani celebrations as the West Indies were dismissed for 202 to lose the series 2-1.There were so many things happening in that last session -- dropped catches, appeals, no-ball dismissals -- it looked for a while as if it wasnt going to happen.I am thankful for myself, the team and all supporters of Pakistan cricket that we were able to pull it off.Chase, who also top scored in the first innings with 69 and earned the man-of-the-match award, was the prime beneficiary of those near-misses.Twice he saw caught-and-bowled attempts by Hasan Ali put down and then was reprieved on 91 when an edge to Asad Shafiq at slip off Mohammad Abbas was shown to be off a no-ball.Im really disappointed that we couldnt hold on for just one more over, said a crestfallen Chase. We have showed that we can compete with the best but its up to us to be able to take it all the way. It doesnt even matter that I got a hundred. In the end he completed his third Test century but was left helpless at the non-strikers end when Gabriel, who had defended resolutely for 21 balls, inexplicably attempted a wild drive off Shah and dragged the ball back onto his stumps.Shah finished with five for 92 and a series haul of 25 wickets, the highest of his career, as he took the man of the series award. From their mid-afternoon perils, a 58-run seventh-wicket partnership between Chase and Jason Holder frustrated Pakistan for an hour-and-a-half, until the West Indies captain missed a knee-high full toss from Hasan Ali to be leg before for 22 just after tea.Devendra Bishoo and Alzarri Joseph also offered some resistance but it was Gabriels defiance through eight nerve-jangling overs with Chase that almost took the West Indies to safety and a drawn series.A swift end to the match had looked likely as Vishaul Singh and Shane Dowrich both fell to Shah just after lunch. Both were taken at short-leg by Babar Azam and on a pitch offering turn and bounce, it appeared only a matter of time before more wickets fell. But Chase and Holder batted with calm assurance as the Pakistanis grew increasingly impatient in pursuit of the breakthrough.Such anxieties appeared unlikely at the start of the day. Having already lost the wicket of Kieran Powell overnight, the home side suffered two further setbacks inside the first hour of the morning.Kraigg Brathwaites poor run of form continued when the opening batsman miscued an attempted cut off Shah for Hasan Ali to take the comfortable catch at backward point.Shimron Hetmyer batted positively for 25 but was then comprehensively bowled by Mohammad Amir for the third time in the series.Chase then joined Shai Hope with the pair defying all the challenges presented to them by the Pakistani attack until Hasan Ali got the breakthrough and his first Test wicket 20 minutes before lunch, trapping Hope leg-before with a full-length inswinger. His two additional wickets in that pulsating final session were critical to the victory.

Santner spins New Zealand to win over Ireland

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - Mitchell Santners career best ODI figures set up a 51-run victory for New Zealand in their opening tri-nation series game against Ireland in Malahide.Santner finished with five for 50 as Ireland were bowled out for 238 in the 46th over, the hosts losing their last five wickets for 26 runs.Niall OBrien provided valiant resistance as Ireland threatened an upset, but once he became the eighth man out for 109 the game was up for the home side.OBriens first ODI century came off 125 balls, with nine fours and five sixes, but the only batsmen to stay with him were Andrew Balbirnie (36) in a third-wicket stand of 86 and Gary Wilson (30) in a fifth-wicket partnership of 75.Scott Kuggeleijn, on his ODI debut, removed Ireland openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling in his first three overs and returned to have Wilson caught in the covers by Ross Taylor to spark the Ireland collapse. The other Blackcaps debutant, Seth Rance, finished the match with his first wicket, trapping last man Peter Chase leg before.Ireland also gave a debut to off-spinning all-rounder Simi Singh, who came in for Stuart Thompson in the only change to the team that played Bangladesh in the opening game of the series on Friday.Neil Broom was the star of the New Zealand innings, hitting 79 from 63 balls with nine fours and a six, to build on half centuries from Ross Taylor (52) and George Worker (50).Porterfield won his second successive toss but it was New Zealand opener Luke Ronchi who got the innings off to a fast start with 37 from 26 balls, before he got a leading edge to a pull shot and was caught at point. The wicket-taker was Barry McCarthy, who can surprise batsmen with his pace, and as a result he has a habit of taking early wickets. This one came from his 11th delivery and three balls later he had his second when captain Tom Latham was caught behind for 15 to leave New Zealand 55 for two in the 10th over.Worker and Taylor, however, were untroubled in the next 20 overs as they added 86 for the third wicket. Worker, in only his third international, was the more patient while Taylor scored at a run-a-ball.Both reached their 50s, but both were out immediately afterwards, Taylor caught by the Irish captain at point and Worker, whose half-century took 88 balls, with just three fours, caught at deep mid-wicket.Broom however ensured a big finish for New Zealand, who scored 130 off the last 15 overs. The pick of the Ireland bowlers was Kevin OBrien with one for 46 and although George Dockrell, the only spinner used, finished wicketless, he conceded only 42 runs.Peter Chase could not continue his good early season form, going for 74 runs and taking his only wicket in the last over.

Chase and Holder dig in to defy Pakistan

Posted:

ROSEAU (AFP) - An unbroken 53-run seventh-wicket partnership between Roston Chase and Jason Holder frustrated Pakistans push for a series-clinching victory with the West Indies holding on at 146 for six at tea on the last day of the third and final Test at Windsor Park in Dominica on Sunday.Set an improbable target of 304 and starting the final day at seven for one, all looked lost for the home side when Shane Dowrich became Yasir Shahs fourth wicket of the innings to make the score 93 for six in mid-afternoon.However Chase, the leading run-scorer on both sides in the series, found a resilient partner in Holder on the way to his fourth score in excess of 50 in the series. He will resume on 66 in the final session of the match with the West Indies captain on 22.With as much as two-and-a-half hours play still available and the hosts tail-enders not expected to offer substantial resistance, Pakistan remain favoured to give the retiring pair of captain Misban ul Haq and senior batsman Younis Khan an historic farewell unless Chase and Holder can extend their partnership deep into the last period of play.Pakistan have yet to win a Test series in the West Indies after seven previous tours dating back to 1958.Resuming after lunch at 73 for four, a swift end to the match looked likely as Vishaul Singh and Dowrich both fell to Shah, lifting the leg-spinners wicket tally in the series to 24, equalling his previous best effort which was achieved against Sri Lanka. Both were taken at short-leg by Babar Azam and on a pitch offering turn and bounce, it appeared only a matter of time before more wickets fell. But Chase and Holder batted with calm assurance for over an hour as the Pakistanis grew increasingly impatient in pursuit of the breakthrough.Such anxieties appeared unlikely at the start of the day.Having already lost the wicket of Kieran Powell overnight, the home side suffered two further setbacks inside the first hour of the morning.Kraigg Brathwaites poor run of form continued when the opening batsman miscued an attempted cut off Shah for Hasan Ali to take the comfortable catch at backward-point while Shimron Hetmyer batted positively for 25 but was then comprehensively bowled by Mohammad Amir for the third time in the series.Chase, the first innings top-scorer, then joined Shai Hope with the pair defying all the challenges presented to them by the Pakistani attack until Hasan Ali got the breakthrough and his first Test wicket 20 minutes before lunch, trapping Hope leg-before with a full-length inswinger.
