Amir promoted 19 months after ban lifted

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistans star fast bowler Mohammad Amir was promoted into the countrys top category Wednesday following his brilliant Champions Trophy performance, just 19 months since returning to international cricket after a five-year spot-fixing ban.The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shuffled several players while issuing new lists of contracts for national duty, given on the basis of performances in international and domestic matches.A number of young players have been awarded contracts this year keeping in mind that the national teams performances in all formats, said a PCB release.Amir, who was earlier listed in the B category after his return to the game, was elevated to A class in the reshuffle, joining the ranks of captain Sarfraz Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Yasir Shah. The 25-year-old, along with then captain Salman Butt and pace partner Mohammad Asif, was banned in 2010 for arranging deliberate no-balls in return for money during the Lords Test in England. All three players were also jailed by a UK court in 2011.Since his return in January last year, Amir has taken 43 wickets in 14 Tests, 30 in 21 one-day internationals and 11 in 13 Twenty20s.He took three crucial wickets in Pakistans improbable Champions Trophy victory over arch-rivals India in London last month.

Chandimal, Tharanga to captain Sri Lanka

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka appointed two new captains Wednesday to replace Angelo Mathews, who resigned after his sides humiliating home series defeat to bottom-ranked Zimbabwe.Dinesh Chandimal will lead the Test side while Upul Tharanga will captain in limited-overs matches, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said. The reshuffle caps a turbulent period for the beleaguered Sri Lankan side, whose loss to Zimbabwe followed a fitness and coaching crisis and an early departure from the Champions Trophy.Mathews tendered his resignation a short while ago this morning, said SLC chief Thilanga Sumathipala said.We want to regroup and restructure and move forward.Mathews said he took the blame for Sri Lankas recent woes, and was making room so his successor could prepare the side for the World Cup in 2019.There were times when I wanted to step down, but I did not want to let the team down at that time because there were no replacements as such, he told reporters. But I feel this is the right time. The teams interests supercede my interests. My honest opinion is that there are candidates who can take over the reins.Mathews bore the brunt of the criticism levelled at Sri Lankas cricketers in the aftermath of their 3-2 series loss at home to minnows Zimbabwe on Monday.Mathews described the shock defeat as lowest point in his career and a hard pill to swallow. The struggling side entered the series without a coach after Graham Fords sudden exit following their poor showing in the Champions Trophy last month.Sri Lankas sports minister delivered the squad an ultimatum after that performance, ordering players get in shape or face the boot after declaring them unfit to compete on the world stage.Sri Lanka Cricket manager Asanka Gurusinghe said the team had hit rock bottom but would bounce back. After losing to Zimbabwe, we have to go up. This side is too good to keep going down, Gurusinghe said.Their first challenge starts Friday, when Chandimal will lead the side in Colombo for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.I am going to put my heart and soul into the team, Chandimal said.Tharanga, who will take over in Twenty20s and ODIs, said there was much room for improvement following the embarrassment against Zimbabwe. As a team we did not perform well, he said. The team remains plagued by fitness problems, with up to 20 players battling injuries in the past year, said chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya.Mathews had to return home halfway through Sri Lankas tour of South Africa earlier this year and missed Bangladeshs tour of Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury.

Tamim denies hate crime behind sudden Essex exit

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs Tamim Iqbal rejected rumours Wednesday that he quit English county cricket club Essex because of a hate crime targeting his family and said it was down to personal reasons. The 28-year-old opening batsman cut ties with Essex after just one match, but dismissed suggestions his sudden departure was because of an alleged attack against his wife and son. Some media reported that we were the target of attempted hate crime. This is really not true, the Bangladesh vice-captain posted on his Facebook page.England is one my of favourite places to play cricket and Essex have been entirely gracious even though I had to leave early. However an official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board said the decision followed an incident in London where Tamim, his wife Ayesha Siddiqa and one-year-old son were harassed while out for dinner. We suspect they were chased because Tamims wife wears a hijab (Islamic head covering). Hopefully well know the details once he returns from England today, said the cricket official, speaking on condition of anonymity.Bangladeshs top-read English newspaper The Daily Star quoted a source as saying the alleged attackers even attempted to throw acid at Tamims wife. The official could not confirm whether Tamim reported the matter to police.BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury and Tamims elder brother Nafees Iqbal, who also played Test cricket for Bangladesh, refused to comment on what they termed a personal matter.Essex announced Tuesday that Tamim quit the club after playing in Essexs seven-wicket loss to Kent in a Twenty20 match last week.Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that overseas player, Tamim Iqbal, has left the club with immediate effect due to personal reasons, a statement said.Tamim, Bangladeshs highest international run scorer in all forms of the game, signed only last week for an eight-game stint in Englands T20 Blast competition.Tamim starred with the bat for Bangladesh in the recent Champions Trophy, scoring a century against England, narrowly missing another against Australia and hitting 70 in the semi-final against India.

Root's 'great start' encourages former skipper Cook

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Former England captain Alastair Cook hailed the outstanding start made by new Test skipper Joe Root ahead of his second outing in charge.Yorkshire batsman Root will look to guide England to a win that puts them 2-0 up in the four-match series when the second Test gets underway at Trent Bridge on Friday after his first match as captain ended in a dominant 211-run win over the Proteas at Lords last week. That was the 26-year-old Roots first match as Test captain since Cook stepped down from the post in February and saw the new skipper star with the bat as well in making a first-innings 190.It was a great week for English cricket, Cook told Sky Sports on Wednesday. For Joe Root to get off and win a game by 200 runs and get 190, it doesnt get much better than that, added the 32-year-old Cook, still in the England side as an opening batsman.I am really pleased for him. He had a horrible cold all week, but I thought he was outstanding. When he did speak in the dressing room his messages were very clear. The confidence he will have got from last week, it is always important to start well.He got the monkey off his back in terms of getting a big score early on in your captaincy career, which stops everyone talking about captaincy affecting your batting.I think all in all he will have gone to bed Sunday night a very happy man.No one knows more about the pressures of leading the team than Cook, who captained England in a record 59 Tests before standing down following a 4-0 series loss in India late last year.Nothing can prepare you for it, Cook said of being England captain.Sometimes the peace and quiet is on the field and when you are batting. It is a big role, but its great that he had a really good start and I am always there if he needs some support.Personalities will be different. His will evolve over a period of time. He is still new to captaincy, in terms of any kind of cricket, so he will get better and better. He could not have done more in that first game.Meanwhile Cook marked his return to the ranks after five years as captain with a valuable 69 in the second innings at Lords. It was business as usual for me, said the Essex left-hander, Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer.It was a little bit strange, especially when Joe came out to toss and knowing I will never do that again. But then you see all the interviews after and think its alright, I can go and get my pads onI have done my stint, proud of what I achieved and hopefully we can build forward with Rooty.Cook added: The target hasnt really changed for me. It is just to score runs to help set up England victories... Scoring big hundreds is the dream for any batter.South Africa have lost just one away Test series in the last 10 years and Cook expected the Proteas to bounce back strongly at Trent Bridge. You watch a lot of their cricket and they are one of the sides that travel very well, he said. They have a very good record away from home. They will be hurting. We need to be right on it. In Test-match cricket if you are not on it for the full five days you can lose it very quickly.

South Africa's Morkel out to banish no-ball blues

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel is disappointed but philosophical about holding the unwanted record for most Test wickets overturned by no-balls.Morkel took his tally to 13 in the act of over-stepping when he bowled Ben Stokes in South Africas 211-run first Test defeat by England at Lords last week. With the Proteas looking to level the four-match series at 1-1 in the second Test at Nottinghams Trent Bridge, Morkel said of the Stokes wicket: Its not the first no-ball Ive bowled in my life. Its not going to end my career, the 32-year-old also told reporters at Trent Bridge on Wednesday. Its 13, yes -- world record.Somebody needs to hold it. Its 13 wickets Id like to have in the bank, but it wasnt meant to be.Morkel, a veteran of 75 Tests, added: Its part of the game. (England) also bowled a couple of no-balls that could have easily taken a wicket. But Dean Elgar, who skippered the Proteas at Lords but will hand over to returning captain Faf du Plessis in Nottingham, described some of South Africas mistakes, including dropped catches and no-balls, in the first Test as non-negotiables.Its not acceptable - its a controllable sort of thing, Morkel said. I cant make excuses.I need a lot of rhythm, and timing for me is crucial, and I felt the more I bowled in that Test the better my timing was.Unfortunately, I did bowl that no-ball, and thats the sort of thing you dont want, to give quality players extra lives ... youre going to get punished. The only thing I can do is keep on working on getting that foot behind the line.I think its just a rush of blood to the head, wanting to create something with the older ball.Morkel will have additional responsibility after fellow paceman Kagiso Rabada was banned from the second Test as a result of swearing at Stokes at Lords.Obviously, were going to miss KG - an ability to bowl long spells fast, with a lot of energy, of course were going to miss that, said Morkel. You cant lie about that ... but its an opportunity for another guy to step into his place and put his hand up.We just need to put whatever happened in the last Test behind us, with KG, with everything, and just focus on Friday.

Mathews resigns after Zimbabwe humiliation

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lankan cricket captain Angelo Mathews has stepped down amid intense criticism over his sides series defeat to bottom-ranked Zimbabwe on home soil, an official said Wednesday.Mathews met with chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya to discuss his future with the team before a one-off Test against Zimbabwe beginning Friday, said an official with Sri Lankas cricket board. He has quit the captaincy from all three forms of the game, the official said on condition on anonymity, referring to Test, one-day international and twenty20 formats of cricket. An official announcement of Mathews resignation was expected later Wednesday, the official added.Mathews took the brunt of the criticism levelled at Sri Lankas cricketers in the aftermath of their 3-2 series loss at home to minnows Zimbabwe on Monday.Mathews described the shock defeat as a low point in his career and a hard pill to swallow. It compounded woes for the struggling side, which entered the series without a coach after Graham Fords sudden exit following their poor showing in the Champions Trophy last month.Sri Lankas sports minister delivered the squad an ultimatum after that performance, ordering players get in shape or face the boot after declaring them unfit to compete on the world stage.

PM will resign within next ten days, predicts Khurshid Shah

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – After the much-talked-about Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report on Panama case, opposition leader Khurshid Shah has been actively demanding resignation from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He has not only communicated with other lawmakers but also predicted resignation from the premier within next ten days. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader argued that the country will have to bear great loss if PM Nawaz doesn’t resign.Shah predicted, “Prime Minister will resign within the next ten days,” suggesting that he should save democracy rather than adopting the policy of conflict. He called PM’s own ‘aides’ responsible for the ongoing political crisis. “His own friends brought him here,” he stated. While commenting on Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, he said the state minister did the right thing by not speaking on this issue. He told that contacts were made with Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Siraj-ul-Haq, Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, Farooq Sattar, PML-Q and other leaders. “No requisition made to call National Assembly session,” he stated. It should be noted that the ex-PML-N leaderhas suggested PM Nawaz to resign and allow Chaudhry Nisar or Ahsan Iqbal to take his position.

Malta votes to allow same-sex marriage

Posted:

VALLETTA (AFP) - Maltas parliament voted Wednesday to allow same-sex couples to marry, three years after passing a law permitting civil partnerships in the overwhelmingly Catholic nation.Lawmakers gave near-unanimous approval to the bill, which represents a major step for LBGT rights on the island, which only legalised divorce in 2011 and where abortion is outlawed.Malta, the EUs smallest nation, becomes the blocs 15th country to legalise same-sex unions. The vote was one of Prime Minister Joseph Muscats first actions following his election victory last month. Its a historic vote. This shows that our democracy and society have reached a level of maturity and we can now say that we are all equal, he said after the text was passed. The influential Catholic church was solidly opposed to the bill but gay rights activists on Wednesday hailed the result, rallying in downtown Valetta under the banner: Weve made history.

Elbow injury forces Djokovic to quit Wimbledon quarter-final

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Novak Djokovic said a right elbow injury was to blame for his retirement from Wednesdays Wimbledon quarter-final against Tomas Berdych.Djokovic needed treatment on his elbow at the end of the first set and was already dealing with a long-term right shoulder problem. The three-time Wimbledon champion, who would have regained the world number one ranking if he had won the tournament, was trailing 7-6 (7/2), 2-0 when he called it quits on Court One.Czech world number 15 Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up, goes on to face seven-time champion Roger Federer for a place in Sundays final. Its my elbow. Its been bothering me for a year and a half. Its unfortunate I have to finish Wimbledon like this, said Djokovic after his first Grand Slam retirement since the 2009 Australian Open quarter-finals.I started feeling it at the beginning of the tournament. The level of pain was always increasing and today was the worst day.I tried what I could do to get it in condition to be able to play. All the treatments couldnt really help. The serve and forehand were the shots I could feel it most.Djokovic was especially frustrated to have had to pull out with an injury after complaining bitterly that Wimbledon organisers should have allowed his last 16 match to be played on Monday evening instead of Tuesday morning. The 12-time Grand Slam champion had to face Adrian Mannarino a day later than scheduled due to the late finish of Rafael Nadals defeat against Gilles Muller.Djokovic had needed treatment on his shoulder during his victory over Mannarino. Those kinds of circumstances dont really help. This is the kind of situation you have to accept and try to make the most out of it, Djokovic said.I spent about two hours on the treatment table in between the warm-up and the match to make me fit.It wasnt to be. For an athlete in an individual sport, there is no way out when you are injured.I will have to take some time and see what needs to be done. I guess a break is something I will have to consider right now.- Decline -The 30-year-old Serb had held a 25-2 career record over Berdych and hadnt lost to the Czech in four years. But instead of extending that streak, the world number four will leave London nursing his injury and his pride as the worst period of his career shows no sign of improving.Since winning the French Open last year to complete his career Grand Slam, Djokovic has failed to win another major title. He crashed out of the Australian Open in the second round and the French Open in the quarter-finals.With world number one Andy Murray crashing out against Sam Querrey earlier on Wednesday, Djokovic walked onto Court One knowing he would regain top spot in the rankings if he won Wimbledon for a fourth time. But if that should have served as extra motivation for Djokovic, there were immediate signs that his fitness was a problem when a sloppy tie-break cost him the first set.The Serb called for a medical timeout after the first set to have his right elbow massaged by a physio. But Berdych seized the chance to add to Djokovics woes with a break in the second game of the second set. That was the signal for Djokovic to trudge forlornly to the net to withdraw from the match.
