US VP Pence's hands-on NASA gaffe goes viral

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - In a goof gone viral, Vice President Mike Pence touched something he should not have as he visited NASA headquarters, and his defense smacked of something his boss might do: blame somebody else.Pence was at Cape Canaveral in Florida Thursday for a speech to employees and also took a tour.At one point Pence was guided to piece of gear with a sign that identified it as critical space flight hardware and a warning in bright, red capital letters: do not touch.Pence placed his left palm flat on it, anyway, as cameras clicked away. One of the people in the picture is Florida Senator Marco Rubio. The rest is meme and tweet history.Pence sent out a tweet Friday in which he said he was sorry -- a blurb with a President Donald Trump-esque exclamation point at the end -- and joked that he, Pence, was not really to blame for ignoring the sign, which his hand almost touches.Sorry @NASA ... @MarcoRubio dared me to do it, Pence wrote.NASA put out a tweet saying it was no big deal, that the hardware -- a big piece of metal roughly the shape of a nuclear reactor cooling tower and part of a spacecraft-in-the-making called the Orion -- needed to be cleaned, anyway.Pence put out another light-hearted tweet saying it was the not the first this happened: it featured his photo of NASA ignominy but with a porcupine -- not the space gear -- graced by his hand.Of course, the original photo went viral and many social media users were scathing in their criticism of Pence. Pence supporters said the former were making a big deal out of nothing.Good to know our vice president has the self control of a sugar charged 3rd grader on a field trip, wrote someone with the handle @KentoTFH.Again administration blaming someone else, wrote @PatStevens2, referring to Pences fingering of Rubio. To wit, some of the things Trump has blamed others for: Barack Obama for not acting more forcefully against Russias election meddling, which Trump has even not fully acknowledged; the generals who he said ordered a US raid in Yemen in February in which a US Navy SEAL was killed. In the NASA flap, others recalled Pences reputation as being famously straight-laced and conservative, to the point where he has said he would never dine alone with a woman who is not his wife. This is an example of why you dont eat with women, correct?, wrote @squidlace.

First death anniversary of Burhan Wani today

Posted:

SRINAGAR (Agencies) - The first death anniversary of the Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani is being observed in both parts of Kashmir today (Saturday).India cut off all internet services, imposed a curfew and deploys thousands of troops in Occupied Kashmir for the anniversary of the death of popular Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani.Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen best known for appearing on social media in military fatigues to urge young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was killed in southern Kashmir on July 8 last year.Indian authorities on Friday shut down the internet in Held Kashmir and sealed off the hometown of a slain Kashmiri leader a day before the anniversary of his killing by the army, which had fuelled further unrest across the Himalayan region. On Friday, police halted peoples movements in his hometown of Tral, in a bid to forestall gatherings and demonstrations, witnesses said.Kashmirs separatist leaders — most of whom have been either confined to their homes or jailed ahead of the anniversary — have called for a week of protests from Saturday to mark Wanis death.Authorities have begun controlling peoples movements and suspended mobile internet services in some areas. One senior officer said police stations across south Kashmir were full of motorbikes seized to stop activists moving between villages.India has deployed two additional army battalions — about 2,000 troops — to troubled regions in the southern Kashmir area. But some officials say the challenge now is to deal with public anger rather than the militant threat.

England's Ali completes all-rounder Test 'double'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Moeen Ali became the fifth-quickest player in terms of matches played to do the Test double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets when he completed the feat against South Africa at Lords on Friday.Worcestershires Ali, started the second day of the first Test with 1988 runs and 98 wickets at this level. The left-handed batsman took care of the first part of the double by extending his overnight 61 not out into a dashing 87 in Englands first innings 458.Primarily a batsman, until England deployed him as more of an off-spinner, the 30-year-old Ali has often been criticised for not being a front-rank bowler.Yet on Friday he produced a sharply turning off-break to have star batsman Hashim Amla lbw for 29.Ali then removed South Africa captain Dean Elgar, who had been holding the innings together, for 54 when the opener was caught off bat and pad by Gary Ballance at short leg.Elgars exit left the Proteas in trouble at 98 for three. It also meant Moeen Ali had done the double in his 38th Test, with only the late Tony Greig, who took 37 matches, achieving the feat in fewer fixtures for England.Fastest players to Test double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets (matches, player, country):31 Shakib Al Hasan BAN36 Trevor Goddard RSA37 Tony Greig ENG37 Keith Miller AUS38 Moeen Ali ENG39 Vinoo Mankad IND42 Ian Botham ENG.

French PM details bid to attract post-Brexit finance

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Friday laid out a raft of measures aimed at boosting Pariss attractiveness to high finance to cash in on Britains exit from the European Union.Among them are scrapping a plan to widen a current 0.3 percent tax on financial transactions, eliminating the top income tax bracket, and keeping bonuses out of the calculation of severance pay for risk-takers such as stockbrokers. You can regret this (Brexit) decision or welcome it, but its a fact, said Philippe, speaking on the roof of the Monnaie de Paris -- the national mint -- with the citys glass-and-steel La Defense financial district visible in the distance. You have to deal with it.In another step aimed at attracting foreign businesses, the Paris area is to open three international high schools by 2022 in addition to the existing six.Philippe also announced that work had begun to establish an international tribunal in Paris to handle financial cases in English. Most international financial contracts are written in English and make reference to British law. Also in the pipeline is the CDG Express, a rail line linking Charles de Gaulle airport to the city.French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to relax Frances rigid labour laws to free its economy from red tape and excessive taxation. The French financial sector currently represents about 4.5 percent of national output and employs around 800,000 people.Paris is competing with Dublin, Frankfurt and other centres for an expected shift in finance jobs out of London as a result of Brexit.Several banks, especially Asian institutions, have recently announced that they would move European headquarters from London to Frankfurt in response to Brexit.Bloomberg News said Thursday it would move investment banking activities from London to its Frankfurt headquarters. So far Brexit has had a limited impact in Paris, apart from banking giant HSBCs decision to relocate 1,000 employees from London to the French capital. JP Morgan Chase, for its part, is moving to Dublin, Frankfurt and Luxembourg. At this stage there are no commitments besides HSBCs, said junior finance minister Benjamin Griveaux. Were working on it. Today is an important signal to investors.- Welcome back to Europe -============================With Britain at risk of losing the passporting rights financial firms use to deal with clients in the rest of the European Union when it leaves, employees in direct contact with customers may need to be based on EU territory in future.Other jobs will need to move to deal with business that must be booked in the European Union, as will risk management workers, who must be based in the EU to satisfy banking supervisors requirements. The financial transaction tax (TFF), first introduced in 2012, was to have been extended to include intraday transactions from 2018.The decision not to do so angered the Oxfam charity, a major advocate of the tax. They have killed an advance on the TTF and kissed goodbye to extra revenue that could have benefitted the poorest people, said Alexandre Naulot, spokesman of Oxfam France. However the government is maintaining the rate at 0.3 percent, after a Senate report suggested a reduction to 0.2 percent. To investors, and to those disappointed by Brexit, I want to say that we are ready to roll out the blue, white and red carpet for you, said Paris regional president Valerie Pecresse. Welcome back to Europe, she added, in English.

South Africa's Rabada banned from second England Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will miss next weeks Test against England after his verbal abuse of Ben Stokes during the series opener at Lords, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.Rabada, 22, uttered an audible obscenity after dismissing all-rounder Stokes on the second day of the first Test on Friday, his latest offence triggering a one-Test ban.South Africas Kagiso Rabada has been suspended for next weeks Trent Bridge Test after his accumulated demerit points reached four within a 24-month period following his latest breach of the ICC code of Conduct for which he received a 15 percent fine and one demerit point, said a statement issued by the global governing body. The paceman will now play no part in the second Test of a four-match series at Nottinghams Trent Bridge starting a week on Friday.

All-round Ali and Broad strengthen England's grip on first Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad both starred with bat and ball to leave England well-placed come the close of the second day of the first Test against South Africa at Lords on Friday.Ali made 87 and Broad an unbeaten 57 -- his first Test fifty in four years -- as England piled up 458 all out in their first innings. The pair then shared four wickets between them to reduce South Africa to 104 for four, with Ali completing the Test all-rounders double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets by striking twice with his off-spin.But Temba Bavuma (48 not out) and Theunis de Bruyn (48) realised crease occupation alone would not get South Africa out of the hole they were in.But de Bruyn, only playing because regular captain Faf du Plessis was on paternity leave, fell for 48 shortly before the close and at stumps the Proteas were 214 for five -- still 244 runs behind in the first of this four-Test series.Nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada was nine not out.England resumed on 357 for five, with Joe Root 184 not out in his first Test as England captain.Ali was 61 not out and just 12 runs away from reaching 2,000 in Tests.England twice lost two wickets for no runs in three balls on Friday yet still got beyond 450 thanks to an entertaining last-wicket stand of between Broad and James Anderson.Root had made the most of being missed several times on Thursday to lead an England recovery after the hosts had been in trouble at 76 for four. But the first chance he gave on Friday brought about his downfall on 190 -- the highest score by an England captain in his first Test in charge, surpassing Alastair Cooks 173 against Bangladesh in 2010.There was no reprieve when the 26-year-old Yorkshireman was caught behind off fast bowler Morne Morkel -- denied a wicket Thursday by a no-ball.Root walked off to a standing ovation from a capacity and sun-drenched crowd, having batted for over six hours, facing 234 balls including 27 fours and a six.Two balls later, Liam Dawson was lbw to Morkel for a duck. The first over after the drinks break again saw England lose two wickets, with Ali falling in sight of a sixth Test century when bowled trying to drive Rabada.- Broad hits out -==================An undaunted Broad, who made his Test-best 169 against Pakistan at Lords in 2010, struck shots worthy of his father Chris, the former England opener. He pulled Morkel for two sixes in as many balls to complete a dashing 45-ball fifty. It was Broads most fluent Test innings since he was hit in the face by a Varun Aaron bouncer against India at Old Trafford in 2014.No 11 Anderson then pulled Rabada for six to bring up Englands 450 before he was caught behind to give Morkel his fourth wicket of the innings.South Africas Dean Elgar tried to lead from the front in a match where he too was captaining in a Test for the first time. After the early loss of debutant opening partner Heino Kuhn, the left-hander displayed his customary resilience during a 90-ball fifty. But Hashim Amla, so often a thorn in Englands side, was dismissed for just 29 when lbw to a sharply turning off-break from Ali.After tea, Elgar fell for his interval score of 54 when caught off at and pad by Gary Ballance at short leg as Ali, in his 38th match at this level, became the fifth-quickest player in Test history to do the double.South Africas 98 for three became 105 for four when JP Duminy (15) was plumb lbw to Broad. But Bavuma, unafraid to drive Ali down the ground, counter-attacked.De Bruyn offered good support until he was caught behind after carelessly pushing away from his body at Anderson.
