Panama case: JIT to submit final report in SC today

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Joint Investigation Team (JIT), formed to probe Panama Leaks case, will submit its final report in the Supreme Court of Pakistan today (Monday).A three-judge special bench of the Supreme Court (SC) comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal, Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan will examine the final report of the JIT at 1:00pm today. The apex court’s special bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal had directed the six-member high-powered Joint Investigation Team, tasked to probe alleged illegal properties of the Sharif family, to submit its final investigation report on July 10.The six-member Joint Investigation Team, constituted by Supreme Court (SC) to probe much-hyped Panama Leaks case, included Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Additional Director General Wajid Zia, Military Intelligence’s Brig Kamran Khurshid, National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Director Irfan Naeem Mangi, State Bank of Pakistan’s Amer Aziz, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan’s (SECP) Executive Director Bilal Rasool and Inter-Services Intelligence’s Brig Muhammad Nauman Saeed. The JIT members during seven-week period interrogated eight members of Sharif family including Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, sons Hassan and Hussain Nawaz, daughter Maryam Nawaz, son-in-law Captain Safdar, cousin Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and brother-in-law Ishaq Dar.On April 20, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had announced Panama Leaks case decision comprising of 540 pages, saying that the court issued a split ruling calling for a JIT. Lewis ton carries Windies to thumping win over India

Posted:

KINGSTON (AFP) - Evin Lewis blazed his second hundred against India to lead the West Indies to a rampaging nine-wicket victory in the one-off T20 international at Sabina Park on Sunday.Replying to the tourists challenging total of 190 for six, Lewis stole the spotlight from returning local hero Chris Gayle with a blistering unbeaten 125 in taking the home side to 194 for one with nine balls to spare. It was the first T20 international hundred scored by a West Indian in the Caribbean, and puts the left-handed opener alongside Gayle and New Zealands Brendon McCullum as the only players to have scored more than one century in the international format of the game.Lewis innings was highlighted by 12 towering sixes and six fours off only 62 deliveries. This memorable knock came 11 months after he compiled an even 100 against the same opponents in Fort Lauderdale, where the West Indies sneaked a one-run win a high-scoring encounter. He completely dominated an 82-run opening stand with Gayle, who fell to debutant Kuldeep Yadav for 18 in the ninth over.Marlon Samuels then supported Lewis explosive innings with an assured unbeaten 36 off 29 deliveries as their unbroken second-wicket stand of 112 saw the West Indies home in the 19th over.Lewis fittingly ended the contest with another swing for six off spinner Ravindra Jadeja to achieve the highest individual score in a T20 international chase. It was at the back of my mind that I didnt get a score in the one-dayers but I just believe in backing myself and playing my style of game, said a delighted Lewis after receiving the man-of-the-match award. This is a very good bowling team so any runs you get against them is really appreciated. As well as the 25-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago played though, India did not help their cause by twice dropping him in the deep as he approached the half-century mark, Mohammad Shami and Dinesh Karthik the culprits in the field.Mahendra Singh Dhoni also missed a stumping chance when Gayle was on one while Samuels benefited from a couple of narrow escapes in what was an untidy effort by India in the field.Earlier, Indian captain Virat Kohli (39 off 22 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (23 off 12) led the charge after they were sent in to bat by Carlos Brathwaite, the pair putting on 64 for the first wicket until both fell in the sixth over of the innings to Kesrick Williams. In just his second T20 international, Rishabh Pant struggled to get going but it was the experienced Karthik who dominated an 86-run third-wicket stand before he fell for 48, bowled behind his legs by Samuels. His innings occupied just 29 deliveries and included three sixes and five fours.Despite his dismissal at 151 for three in the 16th over, India still looked on course for a total in excess of 200.However Jerome Taylor removed both Dhoni and Pant (38 off 35 balls) off successive deliveries, while Williams claimed his second wicket when he accounted for Kedar Jadhav via a fine diving catch by Sunil Narine coming off the backward-point boundary. We fell about 30 runs short with the bat and if you dont grab your chances in the field you dont deserve to win, said an obviously disappointed Kohli.Someone at the top of the order should have gotten at least 80-90 to take us up to 220-plus. But all these games are good indicators as to how some our guys respond to pressure situations.Despite being outplayed 3-1 in the preceding one-day international series, there is a sense of anticipation for the return of Gayle, the big-hitting opening batsman whose last appearance for the regional side was at the World T20 final against England in Kolkata 15 months ago.India were forced to make a late change to their 11 as all-rounder Hardik Pandya picked up an injury in the morning warm-ups with Jadeja taking his place.

Australia captain Smith says no backing down on pay

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian captain Steve Smith said Sunday players would not back down in their bitter pay dispute with Cricket Australia.Days after the players boycotted an Australia A tour to South Africa, Smith said the nations cricketers were resolute in wanting to keep the longstanding revenue-sharing pay deal, linked to the games overall financial fortunes.Ill say what we as players have been saying for some time now: we are not giving up the revenue-sharing model for all players, Smith said in an Instagram post. But, through the ACA (Australian Cricketers Association) we are willing to make important changes to modernise the existing model for the good of the game.We are and have always been willing to make those changes.Changes for how the model can be adapted for the even greater benefit of grassroots cricket, which is after all where we all started. After months of negotiations, the players and CA failed to reach agreement on a new pay deal, leaving 230 cricketers unemployed since the end of June when their contracts expired. In an escalation of the protracted pay dispute, the players, through their union the ACA, last Thursday decided to boycott the Australia A tour of South Africa, which was due to start on July 12.There are fears now that the pay row could scupper next months Test tour to Bangladesh, the one-day international series in India in September and even the Ashes against England. The Ashes are due to begin with the first of five Tests in Brisbane in late November.Smith said players were resisting CA attempts to adopt changes to the revenue-sharing model which was introduced 20 years ago.We are determined to keep revenue sharing for all because we must take care of domestic players in Australia, Smith said.As leaders thats what David (Warner), Meg (Lanning), Alex (Blackwell) and I have been fighting for: a fair share for state players who are also partners in cricket.I know from my career that when I was dropped in 2011 if I didnt have a strong domestic competition to go back to, I certainly wouldnt be in the position that Im in today.State players need to be taken care of financially so the domestic competition will always be strong which in turn keeps us strong at the international level.Smith said Australias female cricketers also had to be covered in the same deal as their male counterparts. As womens cricket gets bigger and bigger in Australia women players must also be able to share in what they will be earning, he said. They must have the same chances and incentives to grow the game as the men have had since revenue sharing started. And I know I speak for all of the men that we want women cricketers in the one deal with the men as well. Its time to get a deal done. It should be and can be an exciting time for the game. The CA website said talks were expected to resume between the two parties Monday.

Root hails Cook and Ali after England beat South Africa

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - New England captain Joe Root praised the parts played by predecessor Alastair Cook and all-rounder Moeen Ali after his first Test as skipper ended in a thumping 211-run win over South Africa at Lords on Sunday.Off-spinner Ali took six for 53 as South Africa, set 331 for victory, collapsed to 119 all out inside 37 overs with more than a day to spare as England went 1-0 up in this four-match series. His return gave Ali overall figures of 10 for 112 -- the first 10-wicket match-haul of his 38-Test career.Although Root struck a brilliant 190 in Englands first innings 458, it was Ali who received the man-of-the-match award after he made 87 in that same innings to accompany his bowling feats at Lords.England lost seven wickets before lunch on Sundays fourth day after resuming on 119 for one.But with opener Cook, Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer, making 69 and wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow 51 they still compiled 233 in their second innings. In total, 19 wickets fell Sunday on a Lords pitch taking sharp spin and Root, asked for his view of an extraordinary days play, told reporters: I think what it does tell us is how well guys played last night -- Cooky, Keaton (Jennings) and Gary (Ballance). That 100 runs coming into today, I think they made the wicket look a lot easier than it was -- and probably it was worth double. They need a lot of credit, and obviously the way Moeen and the rest of the guys bowled today was brilliant. This match saw Ali become the fifth quickest player, in terms of matches played, to complete the all-rounders double of 2,000 Test runs and 100 wickets.Sometimes criticised for being too expensive with the ball, Ali -- who made his name with Worcestershire as a batsman -- nevertheless has the happy knack of dismissing leading top-order players, with his first innings haul of four for 59 including the wicket of Proteas star Hashim Amla. With left-arm spinner Liam Dawson selected as much for his ability to keep things tight as take wickets, Ali had the freedom to attack at Lords.Thats when hes at his best, when he is aggressive, said Root.He was outstanding.Root added: If you ask Mo, hell always tell you he feels hes a batter that bowls. The great thing about our top seven is we have two really good bowling options (in Ali and pace bowling all-rounder Ben Stokes).Thats a real luxury, and its great to see him (Ali) being so positive when he got the opportunity ... it just gives us great depth.Ali was giving the honour of leading England off the field, with his bowling performance ensuring he has a place on the Lords honours board that records all those who have taken five wickets in an innings and 10 in a Test at the home of cricket.Yep, it was good -- a bit embarrassing -- but to do that, especially at Lords, was a great feeling, said Ali.England, who named an unchanged 12-man squad including uncapped Middlesex seamer Toby Roland-Jones for the second Test, which starts on Friday, now travel to Nottingham in upbeat mood. However, Root was ready for South Africa -- who havent lost an away Test series in 10 years -- to come back strongly. They are a great side, and we have to make sure we prepare well for Trent Bridge. We should take a lot of confidence from this, and I hope we can gather momentum.Roots croaky voice was evidence of the cold that had bothered the 26-year-old Yorkshireman all match.I obviously wasnt very well, but nothing was going to stop me trying to enjoy this week ... and to come out of it with a win has been an amazing feeling, he said.

Rabada ban a 'big loss' for Test cricket, says Elgar

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africa stand-in skipper Dean Elgar has said Kagiso Rabadas ban from the second match of the England series is a big loss for Test cricket and not just the Proteas. The tourists suffered a thumping 211-run loss, with more than a day to spare, in the first Test at Lords on Sunday when they collapsed to 119 all out after being set 331 to win.South Africa now have just a few days to recover before the second Test at Nottinghams Trent Bridge starts on Friday. But their hopes of levelling the four-match series at 1-1 have been made considerably more difficult by the absence of fast bowler Rabada. The 22-year-old received a one-match ban for his latest offence under the International Cricket Councils code of conduct as a result of swearing at Ben Stokes following his dismissal of the England all-rounder in the first innings at Lords. Its a big loss for everything, the Proteas and Test cricket, Elgar told reporters.Rabada has taken 77 wickets in 18 career Tests at an impressive average of under 25 apiece and Elgar said: He is a vitally important bowler.Hes been a phenomenal strength to our bowling attack for the last three years in all formats... I think for the game of cricket it is a loss.Rabada was in the wickets as South Africa took seven in Sundays morning session to reduce England to 182 for eight in their second innings at lunch on the fourth day.Going into lunch with eight down, I really thought wed given ourselves the best opportunity, said opening batsman Elgar.I think thats why its (so) disappointing to be sitting here after things capitulated as they did.South Africa, however, did not help their own cause by twice dropping Joe Root in the course of a first-innings 190 that also saw him stumped off a no-ball.And on Sunday, they also saw Vernon Philander drop a routine catch at long-off when Jonny Bairstow had made just seven.Bairstow went on to make 51 and share a ninth-wicket stand of 45 with Mark Wood that all but put the match beyond South Africas reach.I do think in Test cricket, particularly, you have to make your own luck, said Elgar. We havent been kind to ourselves the last four days, small things, but they impacted the Test in quite a big way - dropped catches, non-negotiable no-balls, they would definitely have made life easier as a captain.(But) we need to take it on the chin and crack on.These are the punches you have to take -- you have to get up tomorrow morning with a smile on your face and know there is a Test in four days, and you have to start again.Meanwhile South Africa coach Russell Domingo has returned home for the second time this tour, after a team spokeswoman confirmed his mother was now on life support following the injuries she suffered in a car crash that took place during the Twenty20 series against England late last month.

IAAF clears 16 Russians to compete as neutrals

PARIS (AFP) - Sixteen Russian athletes, including 2013 world long jump champion Aleksandr Menkov, were given the green light Sunday to compete internationally as neutrals, world athletics governing body announced. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said its doping review board had agreed that the applications of the athletes met the exceptional eligibility criteria to compete in international competition as neutral athletes, while the Russian national federation (RusAF) remains suspended. The athletes were named as Menkov, Viktor Butenko (discus), Timofey Chalyy (400m hurdles), Danil Danilov (hammer), Olga Eliseeva (race walks - European U20 Championships only), Alexey Fedorov (triple jump), Irina Gemeniuk (triple jump), Irina Gordeeva (high jump), Viacheslav Kolesnichenko (sprints), Aleksandr Lesnoi (shot put), Konstantin Lyadusov (shot put), Iuliia Maltseva (discus), Alena Mamina (sprints), Viktoriia Prokopenko (triple jump), Ilya Shkurenev (decathlon) and Valentin Smirnov (middle distance). In addition, the board extended neutral athlete status for three athletes who had previously been approved to be able to compete at the European U20 Championships: Aksana Gataullina (pole vault), Polina Miller (sprints) and Yana Smerdova (race walks). The participation of all these athletes as neutral athletes in international competition is still subject to formalities for eligibility under IAAF Rules being completed and subject to acceptance of their entries by individual meeting organisers, IAAF said in a statement. In total this year 39 applications have been approved, of which nine are for the forthcoming IAAF World U18 Championships. It is important to reiterate that this review process is about ensuring there is a level playing field in which the worlds clean athletes have confidence, said IAAF president Sebastian Coe.Its a huge task and one which cannot be rushed if we are to ensure the rights and aspirations of clean athletes are protected. The IAAF has received more than 150 applications from Russian athletes, some 50 of which have been endorsed by RusAF.A total of 25 Russian athletes (23 in 2017 and two in 2016) have previously been declared eligible to compete as neutral athletes.

Trump says time to work 'constructively' with Russia

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Donald Trump pledged Sunday to work constructively with Russia but ruled out an immediate easing of sanctions while the countries remain at odds over the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. In a series of tweets on his return from Europe, Trump said he had confronted his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over evidence from the US intelligence agencies that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election when the two leaders met for the first time in Germany on Friday. And while he welcomed an agreement for the start of a ceasefire in Syria, Trump said it was too early to consider any easing of US sanctions on Russia until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved.I strongly pressed President Putin twice about Russian meddling in our election, Trump said of their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit. He vehemently denied it. Ive already given my opinion.....Trump said he and Putin had talked about setting up what he called an impenetrable cyber security unit to prevent hacking in future elections, an idea that drew ridicule from members of his own Republican party. He also said the two men had discussed the implementation of a ceasefire in Syria which began on Sunday, saying it will save lives. Now it is time to move forward in working constructively with RussiaFriction over SyriaSyria has been a particular source of friction between the two countries, as Russia is a close ally of President Bashar al-Assad.Moscow was furious when the Trump administration launched a cruise missile strike against Syrian forces in April, in retaliation for what Washington said was a chemical weapons attack by Assads regime against civilians.Moscow has warned that a program of sanctions imposed by the US, which was tightened last month, threatens their whole relationship.Trumps predecessor Barack Obama ordered the seizure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in the US last December after accusing Russia of trying to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. And last month, the United States added 38 individuals and entities to its sanctions list targeting Russians and pro-Russian rebels it blames for the fighting in Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea.Sanctions were not discussed at my meeting with President Putin. Nothing will be done until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved, said Trump. The US president has previously equivocated over whether Russia did try to tilt the outcome of last Novembers election contest against Hillary Clinton in his favor, amid an investigation into whether members of Trumps campaign team actively colluded with Moscow.Strategic allianceSo his public assessment that Russia did meddle has triggered questions over whether his administration planned to bring in more sanctions.Asked on Sunday whether new sanctions were in the pipeline, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told ABC television: We have sanctions that are already on the table and we expect to enforce those sanctions.Mnuchin also insisted that Russia and the US could work together on cyber security, despite criticism that the two sides had diametrically opposing goals. What we want to make sure is that we coordinate with Russia, that were focused on cybersecurity together, that we make sure that they never interfere in any democratic elections, he said. This is like any other strategic alliance, whether were doing military exercises with our allies or anything else. This is about having capabilities to make sure we both fight cyber (crime) together, which I think is a very significant accomplishment for President Trump. But senior Republican senators, including former presidential candidate John McCain, poured scorn on the idea.Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senates armed services commitee, said on NBC that the cyber idea was not the dumbest idea Ive ever heard, but its pretty close.Voice dripping with sarcasm, McCain told a CBS interviewer that he was sure that Vladimir Putin could be of enormous assistance in that effort, since hes doing the hacking.McCain also criticised the Trump administration for not putting together new sanctions specifically for the election meddling. So far they have not paid a single price for that, he said. The US and Russian sides have issued sharply conflicting accounts of Fridays meeting, with Putin saying on Saturday that Trump had been satisfied by his denials of any Russian interference in the polls.
