Bracewell quits Ireland coaching job

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - Irelands cricket head coach John Bracewell says he wants a new goal and challenge when he leaves his post after two-and-a-half years in December. The former New Zealand head coach had a series of meetings with Cricket Ireland officials this week, and a mutual decision was taken meaning that Bracewell will step down.Whilst my wife and I have immersed ourselves into Ireland and Irish culture we feel it is now time to return home to New Zealand and our families. I have therefore agreed with Cricket Ireland to finish up at the conclusion of my contract, said Bracewell.I took on the role as head coach because I believed in the little guy getting a fair break and the cause of attaining test status appealed to my underdog psyche. That having been achieved, albeit by an unexpected turn of events, has left me looking for a new goal and challenge. The 59-year-old took over from Phil Simmons after the ICC World Cup in 2015, and the former Kiwi spinner led the Irish to World Twenty20 qualification after topping their group. But Bracewell, who played in 41 Tests and 53 one-day internationals for his country, was unable to hault an alarming run of results which saw Ireland thrashed by Afghanistan in the Intercontinental Cup in March.Ireland also suffered heavy one-day defeats at the hands of New Zealand, England and Bangladesh. However, Cricket Ireland performance director Richard Holdsworth said Bracewell wasnt helped by an ageing squad. The last two years have been a difficult period of transition and rebuilding in which John has tried to nurture inexperienced talent against the best teams in the world, said Holdsworth.Bracewell, who handed international debuts to eight players, will remain at the helm for the Intercontinental Cup game against the Netherlands next month before taking charge of the one-dayer against the West Indies in September.

Want to escape Sao Paulo's traffic? Take a flying taxi

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AFP) - While Uber has changed ground transport in many cities, Sao Paulos infernal traffic jams have sparked a new app that opens the sky to commuters: Voom, a helicopter taxi service that charges according to distance and the passengers weight. Its a godsend for those in a rush -- but only if the weather permits.Gustavo Boyde, a Brazilian living in the United States who goes to Sao Paulo for business, is one of those who says the hops above the city are the only way to get around.Ive opted for helicopters, he said, pointing to the metropolis sprawling beyond the horizon as he choppered from a chic central district to the airport.Sao Paulo -- South Americas biggest city, home to 12 million residents within its municipal limits and millions more in satellite towns -- is regularly choked by gargantuan traffic jams. There are 5.9 million vehicles, or one for every two people. At peak hour, traffic can be backed up as much as 576 kilometers (358 miles).- Not so pricey -A new venture launched in April by Europes Airbus, Voom has taken a page out of Ubers marketing manual to put clients above it all -- at a competitive price. The app asks passengers to enter their weight and that of any baggage, then immediately sends the calculated fare.Boydes run, from the southeastern neighborhood of Itaim Bibi to the airport some 30 kilometers (20 miles) away, takes nine minutes and costs $150.Compare that with the market rates before Voom became available. Individual helicopter companies wanted 10 times more -- and trips needed to be booked at least two days in advance. Our goal is to make helicopter transport accessible to more people, so that the helicopter is seen as an alternative, said Vooms executive director, Uma Subramanian. In Boydes case, taking a helicopter through the app was a no-brainer. Using a traditional taxi on the clogged roads would have cost him $50 and an hour and a half of frustrating stop-and-go.I chose Voom because it fits within my travel budget, its economical and its practical, Boyde said. Those are two hours I can now use for work, which is handy given the tight schedule I have, he said.According to Subramanian, saturated roads in Latin America mean that people lose up to 10 hours a week stuck in traffic.- Biggest fleet -Sao Paulo topped a list of 500 cities Voom considered for its debut, for a variety of reasons. The city, which sits in a state of the same name whose population exceeds 45 million, has the biggest fleet of helicopters in the world.ANAC, the National Association for Civil Aviation, says 700 choppers, or nearly a third of Brazils total number, are located there, alongside 528 helipads.Brazils deep recession also means that many in Sao Paulos aviation sector have embraced Voom.In the current situation of a contracting market, the arrival of this service is a positive, said Arthur Fioratti, head of the ABRAPHE association of Brazilian helicopter pilots that covers some 2,000 professional flyers.Back during Brazils boom time, between 2010 and 2013, the sector flourished. ABRAPHE said there were 2,000 helicopter flights a day in Sao Paulo state.Today, there are 1,300.Voom has deals with three helicopter companies which operate five helicopters in Sao Paulos metropolitan zone.Business travelers are the companys target clientele -- an elite used to taking a lift to the top of a glass-and-steel tower to be picked up on the rooftop helipad. But it hopes to eventually broaden the appeal of flitting across the sky by bringing fares down to below what a taxi would charge.- Eye on the weather -Currently, between six and 10 people use Vooms service daily. When my friends saw me using a helicopter to get to the airport they asked if Id become a millionaire. When I told them how much it cost, they were surprised, said Lucas Amadeu, head of marketing for Voom.I think that once people know what it costs, the service will grow a lot, he added. But while market forces are one thing, Mother Nature is another, and the sometimes violent storms and tropical rain that lash Sao Paulo can ground Vooms fleet. At those times, users are forced to resort to ordinary taxis -- and to confront road traffic made even more choked by the weather.Within Brazil, the poor quality of public transport in Sao Paulo is well known. In 2013, the biggest protests the country has ever known erupted when authorities tried to raise fares for the creaking, overburdened network of buses and metros. One risk for Voom is that it might become too popular. An abrupt rise in the number of helicopters flying above the city could prompt the same sort of response as in New York, where officials are considering ways to limit flights. For now, though, the company has its view fixed on other horizons. Its next city pegged for expansion is Mexico City, another badly choked megapolis. For Boyde, who goes to Mexico City almost as often as he does to Sao Paulo, that is good news.If they do the same thing over there, Ill be their customer, he said.

Bolt to run 100m and 4x100m in London farewell

Posted:

MONACO (AFP) - Usain Bolt will run the 100m and 4x100m at the world championships in London next month, his final event before retiring, the Jamaican sprint star confirmed on Wednesday.Bolt, winner of eight Olympic and 11 world gold medals, is looking to bring down the curtain on his glittering career in style at the August 4-13 event. My main aim is just to win (in London). I just want to retire on a winning note, Bolt said during a press conference in Monaco ahead of Fridays Diamond League meeting. The 30-year-old revealed he would not defend his 200m world title, meaning he will not race against South Africas Wayde van Niekerk, the athlete Bolt has tipped to take over as the next track and field superstar.I think thats one of the most disappointing things in my career now, said Bolt. He came along at this late stage and I didnt get to compete against him, because I think hes one of the best now.He added: Im never afraid, I live for competition. But for me its too late now, Im at the end of my career. Well never know what could happen.Bolt will compete in the 100m in Monaco -- his third race of the season after appearances in Kingston and Ostrava -- where he is hoping to dip under the 10-second barrier.Im feeling good, the season started off slow for me. I had a setback after my friend Germaine (Mason) passed away, Bolt said, referring to death of the British high jumper, a 2008 Olympic silver medallist, in a motorbike crash in Jamaica in April.Ive been a little behind schedule, but I am training well. Im feeling much better over the past couple of days because I went to see my doctor in Germany, Ive been training good so thats a good sign. Its just timeBolt was adamant there was little chance he would race again after the world championships but admitted he would likely stay involved with athletics.Ive done everything that I possibly can in this sport, he said, before alluding to a conversation he shared with American track great Michael Johnson, a four-time Olympic champion.I asked (him) because I was surprised when I heard he retired. I said, Why did you retire? You were dominating so much. And he said, Ive done everything I wanted to do, Ive accomplished all my goals. And thats how I feel at this point. I decided that its just time.Bolt added: Theres a lot of directions I could go, but one thing I know is that Ill definitely be close with track and field.Ill try my best to stay as close as possible to sport, stay in sports and try to educate young athletes coming up and what its all about to be a champion. The Jamaican, an avid Manchester United fan, also admitted his dream of forging a professional football career after hanging up his spikes was no longer a priority.I really stressed that point too much... Weve been looking into it and Im really thinking about if I really want to go back into doing so much work right now, said Bolt.I havent totally given up on it but its something that Im not really stressed about right now.

He said the court will inquire why weren’t such records submitted earlier, adding that these documents could make the JIT report controversial and the matter will then head towards trial court.

Iran president threatens response to new US sanctions

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that Tehran would respond appropriately to new US sanctions but that Iran remained committed to its nuclear deal with world powers. The Islamic Republic of Iran will always stick to its international commitments, Rouhani said in a televised cabinet meeting. But if the US wants to press forward with new sanctions under any pretext... the great nation of Iran will respond appropriately, he said.We will not forgive violations by the Americans and we will stand against them. His comments came a day after the US and Iran traded tit-for-tat sanctions over the Islamic republics ballistic missile programme. The State Department slapped sanctions on 18 individuals and entities in Iran, hours after the White House admitted Tehran was adhering to the 2015 agreement.Iran hit back with its own sanctions against American people and entities that have acted against the Iranian people and other Muslim peoples of the region.Rouhani on Wednesday accused Washington of duplicity. On one hand they send official reports to Congress verifying that Iran has been completely loyal to the nuclear deal, Rouhani said.On other hand they seek new sanctions under various excuses against logic (and) the spirit and text of the accord, he said.- Missile funding -Irans parliament on Tuesday voted to streamline a bill that would increase funding for the countrys missile programme and Revolutionary Guards in response to Washingtons adventurism in the region. An overwhelming majority of lawmakers voted to prioritise the motion that would see an additional $260 million allocated to the missile programme and the same amount to the elite Revolutionary Guards foreign operations wing, the Quds Force.Rouhani accused his American counterpart Donald Trump of breaking international deals signed by his predecessor Barack Obama on Cuba, North Korea and climate change. The Iranian president said Washington was pushing Iran to abandon its commitments and that the US was worried over improved economic relations between Iran and Asia and Europe. We are happy that so far the 51 (world powers) have stood strongly to protect the nuclear deal, he said.Later in the day, Revolutionary Guards chief Mohammad Ali Jafari warned the US of Irans growing power.Irans missile power is advancing at a great speed in air, land and sea and this is a cornerstone of our policy, he said in comments on the forces Sepahnews website. Before imposing sanctions on defence and the Revolutionary Guards, the US should close its bases within 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) of Iran, he added.Irans Gulf Arab neighbours to the west and Afghanistan to the east host several major US military bases.Jafari warned US miscalculation could have a high cost. The domain of the Islamic revolutions influence has expanded so much that Iran is active close to American interests in many parts of the world, he said.Such influence, he added, is partly the result of Irans military strength and the roar of the missiles.
