'India scared of playing Pakistan after Champions Trophy defeat'

Posted:

LAHORE (Agencies) - Shaharyar Khan, Pakistan Cricket Board chief, sparked controversy on Thursday by claiming that India were scared of playing Pakistan in a bilateral series following their humiliating defeat to their bitter rivals in the Champions Trophy final last month. The Pakistan cricket board has been upset with their Indian counterparts for their reluctance to resume bilateral cricketing ties. After our win (in the Champions Trophy final), we challenge India to come and play bilateral cricket with us. They dont play us, they are scared of our team. They say well play you in ICC matches but they wont play us otherwise, Shaharyar was quoted as saying by Pakpassion.com on Thursday.India last played a bilateral cricket series with Pakistan in 2012 when Misbah-ul Haqs men beat MS Dhonis team 2-1 in a one-day series. The two cricket boards did sign an MoU to play bilateral series between 2015 and 2023. But the Indian cricket board didnt get the permission from their government to go ahead with the plan due to the political tensions between the two rival countries.Meanwhile, Shaharyar said Pakistan must build on their stunning Champions Trophy triumph. We need to build on this victory. Its not enough, we need to go a lot further. All cricket teams in Pakistan should take an example from this team, Shaharyar said.Be united with the right spirit and attitude, give importance to fielding and fitness and include youth in all teams, he added.Shaharyar also hoped that international cricket will soon return to Pakistan. After this win, every team will want to play us. They should now come to Pakistan, there is complete security. God-willing, teams will start coming. We are in negotiations with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies. They can send their teams first for a short tour, maybe for just T20Is, he said.

'Groggy' Root proud to lead by example

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root said he had finished his first day as England captain in dreamworld after making an unbeaten 184 in the first Test against South Africa at Lords on Thursday.Root did not have much of a voice to use at his post-play press conference after waking up feeling pretty groggy. But opting for an old-fashioned approach of wearing several layers trying to sweat out his cold while taking on plenty of fluids, he helped England turn the tide on the opening day of this four-match series. They were 17 for two when the 26-year-old Yorkshireman came to the crease and 76 for four before lunch, with seamer Vernon Philander taking three wickets.Yet by stumps, England had recovered to 357 for five, justifying Roots decision to bat first after winning the toss.Root, who was aided by Ben Stokes (56) and Moeen Ali (61 not out) in successive century stands, admitted luck had gone his way.He had managed just five when he mishooked Kagiso Rabada, only for the ball to fly over the head of Aiden Markram after the substitute fielder had made the mistake of not being right back on the rope at long leg.Further good fortune for Root followed when he was dropped in the gully on 16 off the luckless Rabada and again on 149 when he was stumped by yards off Keshav Maharaj only for the spinner to have over-stepped -- the second time in the day that an avoidable no-ball cost the Proteas a wicket.Root told Sky Sports he had felt in a bit of a dreamworld and later, talking to reporters, he accepted he could hardly have written a better script for himself.I dont think so, especially getting dropped once and just chipping someone on the boundary. It just seemed to fall into place today, he said. When you get a life early, sometimes you feel like it is your day and youve got to try to make the most of it.Root added: I felt pretty groggy this morning. But nothing was going to stop me enjoying the day.I made the most of everything and the cold wasnt going to get in the way.It may have helped me concentrate slightly out there, knowing I wasnt a hundred percent. He now has the chance to surpass the previous highest score in a first Test as captain of 239 made by New Zealands Graham Dowling in 1968.It was a nice feeling getting that call back (after the over-turned stumping) when you know youve made a glaring error like that, said Root, who added he would look to push on to a really big score. In the morning it was Dean Elgar, leading South Africa for the first time while Faf du Plessis remains at home with his wife after the birth of their first child, who was on course for a dream day.He couldnt put a foot wrong up till lunch and then everything went pear-shaped after, said Philander of his stand-in skipper.Philander added the team had let Elgar down, especially in conceding 13 no-ball runs.Theres probably no excuse for that, said the bowler, who bowled three no-balls.A couple of guys overstepped and cost us a couple of wickets. He (Root) gave us chances and, if were honest with ourselves, if wed taken one of them we could have bowled them out for under 200.But he took his chances -- very well-batted to him, Philander added.

Priest leaves West Indies without a prayer at Women's World Cup

LONDON (AFP) - Rachel Priests rapid 90 set the seal on yet another defeat for the West Indies at the Womens World Cup as New Zealand cruised to an eight-wicket win at Taunton on Thursday.A fourth loss in as many tournament matches all but ended World Twenty20 champions West Indies hopes of reaching the semi-finals, with their pride all they have realistically left to play for in this event.By contrast, this victory took New Zealand into fourth place in a group stage where all eight teams involved play each other once, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals.West Indies were dismissed for 150 - a huge improvement on their woeful 48 all out against South Africa but still nowhere near enough at this level.Leigh Kasperek was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of three for 17 off her 10 overs.Priest and Suzie Bates then put on 120 for the opening wicket in a chase that took just 18.2 overs to complete. The only disappointment for New Zealand was that Priest fell 10 shy of a hundred, having struck 17 fours and two sixes in her 55-ball innings. But this was a minor concern, with White Ferns skipper Bates saying: We didnt plan the fast-paced chase. Priest was hitting it out of the park and thats how she plays so we let her do that.Having a small total let us do that.Leigh Kasperek showed us she deserves to be in there. Its exciting to see her and Amelia Kerr bowling well.Only Kyshona Knight (41) provided much in the way of West Indies resistance with the bat.West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor said a lack of one-day international experience had proved costly to her side.If you look at 50-over games, its been a while since we last played, she explained.Taylor added: Its all about (our) mindset (for their next game against Sri Lanka). We just have to look to play some positive cricket. We just have to play for some pride.

Dickwella, Gunathilaka give Sri Lanka big win

HAMBANTOTA (AFP) - Openers Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka hit sublime centuries to help Sri Lanka humble Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the third one-day international in Hambantota on Thursday.Chasing 311 for victory, the hosts rode on a 229-run opening stand between Dickwella (102) and Gunathilaka (116) to canter home in 47.2 overs and earn a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The left-handed batting duo got their maiden ODI hundreds to overshadow Zimbabwe opener Hamilton Masakadzas sparkling 111 in the visitors 310-8 after being put into bat first. While wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella hit 14 boundaries during his stay, Gunathilaka smashed 15 fours and a six to flay the Zimbabwe attack at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. It was a fantastic effort by the boys. After losing the first game, we had our backs against the wall and we came back well, Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews said. The way Dickwella and Gunathilaka batted, we could have chased 350 on that wicket, he said of his team that hunted down a 300-plus run target for the first time on home soil. However, the ICC fined Mathews 20 percent of his match fee for his teams slow over rate while the rest of the team was slapped with a 10 percent penalty.ICC match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine after finding the Sri Lankans one over short of its target when the time allowance was take into consideration, the ICC said.It warned that should there be another infringement in the next 12 months under Mathews captaincy, he will face asuspension.Off-spinner Malcolm Waller got Dickwella trudging back to the pavilion and left-arm orthodox Sean Williams cleaned up Gunathilaka, who received the man of the match award, in an otherwise disappointing show by the Zimbabwe bowlers.Upul Tharanga (44) and Kusal Mendis (28) then steered the team home with an unbeaten 75-run stand as the batting duo survived a dropped catch each as fielding lapses also hurt the visitors. The bowlers came back pretty well after the start that they (Zimbabwe) got. Hamilton played brilliantly, credit should go to him as well but the bowlers did well to keep them to 310, said Mathews.Mathews also praised Tharanga, who is unbeaten in the series so far, for being an absolute team man after he once again dropped down the order to allow Dickwella and Gunathilaka to open the innings.Earlier Masakadza put on a crucial 127-run partnership for the second wicket with Tarisai Musakanda (48) before Sri Lankan bowlers struck back to check Zimbabwes surge.Masakadzas 98-ball knock, laced with 15 fours and a six, had Zimbabwe eyeing 350-plus at one point before a middle-order collapse pulled them back.Teenage leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who took a hat-trick on his ODI debut in the second match in Galle, and paceman Asela Gunaratne grabbed two wickets each.Sean Williams contributed with a gutsy 43 while cameos from wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Moor (24) and Sikandar Raza (25 not out) helped Zimbabwe cross the 300-run mark.We need to get runs on the board batting first, but 310 was enough, we just need to get better with the field... Our bowling was probably under par (as well), Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer said. The action now shifts to the fourth ODI on Saturday at the same venue.

Kohli leads India to series win over West Indies

Posted:

KINGSTON (AFP) - Virat Kohli stroked a commanding, unbeaten 111 to lead India to a series-clinching eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the fifth and final one-day international at Sabina Park on Thursday.Responding to the home sides modest total of 205 for nine after captain Jason Holder chose to bat first in Jamaica, the visitors skipper ensured there was to be no upset with the target reached in the 37th over to give India a 3-1 series triumph.Stung by an 11-run defeat in the fourth match in Antigua, when they failed to reach an even smaller target of 190, the Indians were in no mood to let their opponents off the hook this time around. An early strike by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in removing Shikhar Dhawan at the start of the chase ushered in Kohli who immediately set about the bowling. He put on 79 for the second wicket with Ajinkya Rahane before the opener fell leg-before to spinner Devendra Bishoo. It was his first score under 50 in the series.Dinesh Karthik joined his leader in the 19th over and was prepared to play the supporting role to a rampant Kohli, his 28th ODI century coming up off 108 deliveries with one six and 12 fours decorating his authoritative innings.Karthik reached an unbeaten 50 in an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 122 just before Kohli finished the match with his second six off Roston Chase.Earlier, opening bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav shared seven wickets in restricting the West Indies after they were well poised at 76 for one in the 16th over.Seeking victory to earn a share of the honours from a campaign in which they entered as huge underdogs, the home sides only substantial contributions came from the Hope brothers, Shai and Kyle.Shai topscored with 51, his second half-century of the series, while Kyle contributed 46 at the top of the order.All-rounders Holder and Rovman Powell got to 36 and 31 respectively but failed to capitalise on decent starts as India tightened the screws on their opponents with disciplined bowling from the two frontline seamers towards the end of the innings.Shami finished with four for 48 while Yadav completed his ten-over spell with three wickets at a cost of 53 runs.Despite their combined successes, it was Hardik Pandya who made the first breakthrough. Brought on to facilitate a switching of ends by Shami and Yadav, he induced a loose drive from Evin Lewis to have him caught at mid-off.Shai joined Kyle Hope and the pair attempted to accelerate on a pitch that appeared much better for batting than for the last two games at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.Kyle took a particular liking to Yadav, smashing him for consecutive boundaries. But the bowler had the last laugh as the batsman found Shikhar Dhawan at midwicket attempting another boundary in the same over.Chases miserable series with the bat continued when he was trapped leg-before to the very next delivery from Yadav and it was left to Holder to give the innings some momentum. He dominated a 48-run fifth-wicket partnership with Shai Hope, only to depart to Shami at the start of his second spell.India conclude this brief visit to the Caribbean on Sunday when they take on the West Indies in a solitary T20 international at the same venue.

Russia jails head of notorious hacker group

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - A Moscow court on Thursday jailed the leader of a notorious hacking group for two years for breaking into the accounts of high-ranking Russian officials.Vladimir Anikeyev headed the Shaltai Boltai collective -- Russian for Humpty Dumpty -- believed to be behind high-profile hacks, including into the Twitter account of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.Anikeyev -- who has been under arrest since October 2016 -- was found guilty of gaining unauthorised access to computer data after a closed trial that was classified as secret, the court said in a statement. He was handed the two-year sentence after striking a plea bargain and agreeing to cooperate with the authorities.Among those Anikeyev was accused of targeting were lead Kremlin propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov, presidential advisor Andrei Belousov and Medvedevs spokeswoman Natalia Timakova. In 2014 the group claimed credit for breaking into the Twitter account of premier Medvedev and posting messages saying he was quitting the government in shame to become a freelance photographer and criticising President Vladimir Putin. The group was initially portrayed as an anti-Kremlin collective, with its eye-catching leaks of official emails leaving the authorities red-faced.But alleged members of the secretive collective have told media outlets that they made money by selling the hacked data to the highest bidder.Anikeyev did not plan to challenge the verdict and his lawyer said he would immediately apply for early release when his sentence comes into force in ten days, RIA Novosti news agency said.Anikeyevs arrest came at roughly the same time as the detention of several high-ranking cybercrime officials at Russias FSB security agency, sparking speculation the cases were linked. There has, however, been no confirmation that the arrests were connected.

Ton-up Root turns South Africa tide

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root marked his first innings as England captain with a superb 184 not out against South Africa at Lords on Thursday.England were 357 for five at stumps, having collapsed to 76 for four before lunch on the first day of the opening Test of a four-match series. But Roots 12th hundred in 54 Tests, and third at Lords, justified his decision to bat first after winning the toss in what was Englands first match at this level since he was appointed following Alastair Cooks resignation as skipper in February.New vice-captain Ben Stokes made 56 and helped wrest the initiative away from the Proteas in a fifth-wicket stand of 114.Moeen Alis 61 not out cemented the recovery as he added an unbroken 167 with Root.Concerns had been expressed that captaincy would reduce Roots effectiveness as a batsman.- Rode my luck -==================But, on this evidence, Root appears destined to follow the other members of world battings big four -- Indias Virat Kohli, Australias Steve Smith and New Zealands Kane Williamson -- all of whose Test averages as captain of their respective countries have far outstripped their equivalent figure in the ranks.I rode my luck a bit early on and I managed to capitalise on it, Root, in at 17 for two, told Sky Sports. They bowled very well early on and I couldnt get my feet moving but credit to Stokesy and Moeen for the way they played.Earlier the 26-year-old Root opted to bat first despite a green-tinged pitch offering hope of early movement.Cook had made just three when he was caught behind chasing a Vernon Philander ball outside off stump.Fellow opener Keaton Jennings, born in South Africa, fell next for eight on his home debut when lbw to Philander, who bowled the Proteas to a series-clinching victory at Lords five years ago.The 32-year-old Philander, fit following an ankle injury sustained while playing for English county side Sussex, had now taken two wickets for three runs in eight balls.Root, meanwhile, was fortunate, when on five a top-edged hook off Kagiso Rabada just cleared substitute fielder Aiden Markram, who was not right back on the rope at long leg.He had another break when on 16 an edged drive off Rabada flew through JP Duminys hands at gully.Meanwhile Roots Yorkshire colleagues Gary Ballance (20) and Jonny Bairstow (10) both fell cheaply. But Stokes, who has known Root since their days as schoolboy cricket opponents, took the attack to the Proteas by driving spinner Keshav Maharaj for six.He was bowled off a Morne Morkel no-ball on 44, the fast bowler having only himself to blame for a considerable over-step.- Not proud -===============It was one of 13 no-ball runs conceded by the Proteas and Morkel said: It was a very good start but the way we came out after lunch was something we are not very proud of as a bowling unit.Take nothing away from Joe Root, he rotated the strike really well.Stokes, however, fell soon afterwards when his top-edged hook off Rababa flew straight to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. But Roots swept three off Maharaj saw him to a 150-ball hundred, including 15 fours. His century also meant the last four England Test captains -- Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Alastair Cook and now Root himself -- had all scored a century in their first game as skipper.Fully in command on a pitch dried out by the sun, Root drove Maharaj for six over long-off.Root should have been out for 149 when he charged down the pitch to Maharaj and was stumped by yards. But replays showed that Maharaj had bowled a no-ball -- an inexcusable error for a slow bowler.South Africa, with Dean Elgar captaining the side in the absence of Faf du Plessis, still at home following the birth of his first child, had long since gone on the defensive. The new ball failed to produce a breakthrough, with Root dismissively driving Rababa through the covers for four and two balls later pulling him for another boundary.Root, whose father, grandfather and young son were all at Lords on Thursday, walked off to a standing ovation after more than six hours at the crease.

Shami, Yadav keep West Indies in check

KINGSTON (AFP) - Opening bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav shared seven wickets to limit the West Indies to 205 for nine batting first against India in the fifth and final one-day international at Sabina Park on Thursday.Seeking victory in Jamaica to earn a share of the honours from a series in which they entered as huge underdogs, the home sides only substantial contributions came from the Hope brothers, Shai and Kyle.Shai topscored with 51, his second half-century of the series, while Kyle contributed 46 at the top of the order.All-rounders Jason Holder and Rovman Powell got to 36 and 31 respectively, but failed to capitalise as the visitors tightened the screws on their opponents with disciplined bowling from their two frontline seamers towards the end of the innings.Shami, playing just his second ODI since the 2015 World Cup, finished with four for 48 while Yadav completed his ten-over spell with three wickets at a cost of 53 runs.Despite their combined successes, it was Hardik Pandya who made the first breakthrough after Holder chose to bat first on winning the toss, both teams being unchanged from the West Indies 11-run win in the fourth match four days earlier in Antigua.Brought on to facilitate a switching of ends by Shami and Yadav, Pandya induced a loose drive from Evin Lewis to have him caught at mid-off.Shai joined Kyle Hope and the pair attempted to accelerate on a pitch that appeared much better for batting than for the last two games at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.Kyle took a particular liking to Yadav, smashing him for consecutive boundaries. But the bowler had the last laugh as the batsman found Shikhar Dhawan at midwicket attempting another boundary in the same over.Roston Chases miserable series with the bat continued when he was trapped leg-before to the very next delivery from Yadav and it was left to Holder to give the innings some momentum. He dominated a 48-run fifth-wicket partnership with Shai Hope only to depart to Shami at the start of his second spell. He then claimed the important wicket of Shai Hope, via an excellent diving catch on the midwicket boundary by Ajinkya Rahane, before adding Ashley Nurse and Devendra Bishoo to his list of victims.Powell was the West Indies last chance of getting up to the 220-run mark. However his entertaining run-a-ball innings was ended in the final over by Yadav via a catch behind by wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
