US warns Iran of 'new and serious consequences' if Americans not returned

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trumps White House dialed up the pressure on Iran Friday, demanding the quick return of Americans detained in the Islamic Republic.President Trump is prepared to impose new and serious consequences on Iran unless all unjustly imprisoned American citizens are released and returned, the White House said in a statement. The tough warning comes just days after Trump rowed back on a campaign promise and upheld the Iran nuclear deal, while introducing new non-nuclear related sanctions. The threat of prisoner-related sanctions opens up a new front in tensions between Tehran and the Trump administration. The measure comes after a Chinese American accused of infiltration in Iran was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The man was identified as Xiyue Wang, a 37-year-old researcher at Princeton University.US officials say Trump has taken a keen interest in the fate of Americans held overseas and was deeply affected by the case of Otto Warmbier, a student who was released last month from a North Korean prison in a coma and died shortly after being sent back home.President Donald J. Trump and his Administration are redoubling efforts to bring home all Americans unjustly detained abroad, the White House statement said. The United States condemns hostage takers and nations that continue to take hostages and detain our citizens without just cause or due process. The statement mentioned Xiyue Wang by name, along with Siamak and Baquer Namazi and ex-FBI agent and CIA contractor Robert Levinson -- who went missing in March 2007.Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic relations since April 1980 in the wake of the Islamic revolution, and tensions have sharpened under Trump after a brief warming under his predecessor, Barack Obama. The two countries along with other major powers signed an accord July 14, 2015 aimed at curbing Irans nuclear program. Washington has continued to honor the accord despite Trumps threats as a candidate last year to rip it up.

Siemens scales back Russian ops over Crimea turbines

Posted:

FRANKFURT AM MAIN (AFP) - German industrial conglomerate Siemens said Friday it would scale back its Russia operations after confirming gas turbines it sold to companies there had been diverted to Ukraines Russian-annexed Crimea region in breach of sanctions. All four gas turbines that were delivered in the summer of 2016... have since been locally modified and illegally moved to Crimea, the group said in a statement. The peninsula has been subject to EU sanctions on energy technology since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in 2014.Munich-based Siemens said it would freeze deliveries of power generation equipment to state-controlled Russian customers. It will also divest its minority stake in Russian company Interautomatika, which sells power-plant control systems. And it will terminate a licensing agreement for power generation equipment that it had signed with Russian firms.Siemens is implementing an additional controls regime that is exceeding legal requirements by far, it said.New gas power projects in Russia would only be carried out through companies it controls, ensuring Siemens-controlled delivery and installation overseen by Siemens personnel, it added. After confirming that two of the turbines had been delivered to Crimea almost two weeks ago, Siemens announced that it had launched legal proceedings against the individuals responsible.A German government spokesman told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that Russian President Vladimir Putin himself had assured Berlin the turbines would not end up in Crimea.Putin gave the assurances to Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, the papers Saturday edition reported. The turbines had originally been supplied for a power-plant project in Taman, in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia -- separated from Crimea by just a few kilometres of water.Chancellor Angela Merkels spokesman Steffen Seibert last week pressed Siemens to bring the details of the sanctions breach to light, calling the turbine delivery to Crimea remarkable and completely unacceptable.

Jihadists battle rebels for control of key Syria province

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - A former Al-Qaeda affiliate was locked in fierce clashes Friday with a leading rebel group for control of one of the last major parts of Syria not held by the regime. The clashes in Syrias Idlib province in the countrys northwest pit the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) against the key rebel group Ahrar al-Sham, which is supported by Turkey and some Gulf countries. The factions were once allies and fought alongside each other to capture most of Idlib province from the Syrian government in 2015.But growing tensions between the two have been exacerbated, analysts say, by HTSs fears of a plan to expel the internationally designated terror group from the province. The current fighting erupted on Tuesday and quickly spread throughout the province, including overnight to the key Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. The crossing was previously controlled by Ahrar al-Sham.The fighting is now inside the crossing. It has become a battlefield, with part of it under Hayat Tahrir al-Shams control, and part under Ahrar al-Shams control, Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Observatory, said.HTS also seized two villages and dispatched huge military reinforcements to a third to take on Ahrar al-Sham, he added. The monitor said the fighting has so far killed at least 83 people, including 15 civilians. An AFP correspondent in the province also reported heavy clashes as HTS fighters attempted to break into the town of Ram Hamdan, in the east of the province, including the sound of large explosions and heavy weaponry.Jihadist fire on protestsHTS is dominated by the Fateh al-Sham faction, which was previously known as Al-Nusra Front before renouncing its ties to Al-Qaeda.The clashes have been accompanied by sporadic demonstrations against HTS in several parts of the province, including in the town of Saraqeb where the jihadists on Wednesday and Thursday opened fire on protests against them.On Wednesday, the shots killed a media activist participating in the demonstrations in the town. Both sides have set up new checkpoints, and parts of the province have been transformed into virtual ghost towns with residents staying home for fear of being caught in the crossfire, AFPs correspondent said. The Observatory four civilians and the media activist were among the 15 civilians who have lost their lives in the violence so far.It also reported that 68 fighters from both sides had been killed.Experts said the outbreak of violence comes against the backdrop of a deal agreed in the Kazakh capital Astana in May for four de-escalation zones in Syria. The agreement between regime allies Russia and Iran, and rebel backer Turkey, designates the Idlib region as one of the mooted zones where combat between the government and rebels would halt.HTS opposes the agreement, which calls for continued fighting against jihadist groups like its main component Fateh al-Sham Front.Vying for controlAs soon as there was the announcement of Idlib as a de-escalation zone, thats it, said Nawar Oliver, a military analyst at the Istanbul-based Omran Centre think-tank.HTS felt like a war is upon it, he told AFP.You have these two main rebel forces that are vying for control for Idlib province, added Sam Heller, a Syria expert at the Century Foundation.Whatever kind of political or ideological differences existed between them have been exacerbated or inflamed by the Astana talks, as well as by the rumours -- if not the reality -- of some larger deal that would work against HTS, he said.Oliver added that the fighting was a chance for each side to gain valuable territory, including the border crossing where taxes and tariffs can be extracted. This is an attempt by each faction to extend more influence and control over new areas, he said.Idlib is one of the last major parts of Syria beyond the control of the government, which has recaptured vast swathes of territory from opposition fighters since its ally Russia intervened on its behalf in September 2015.More than 330,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer resigns

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - White House press secretary Sean Spicer and a member of President Donald Trumps legal team resigned Friday in a one-two punch to a reeling administration, as pressure mounts from a broadening investigation into the Trump campaigns ties to Russia.Spicer resigned in opposition to Trumps naming of Anthony Scaramucci, a Wall Street financier and longtime supporter of the billionaire investor-turned-president, as the new White House communications director, a White House official told AFP.Mark Corallo, who coordinated the Trump legal teams public response to the crisis over a probe into possible campaign collusion with Moscow, also stepped down, according to an email he sent to AFP.Spicers press briefings -- often combative affairs with White House reporters -- became increasingly infrequent in recent months, with deputy spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders stepping in to address journalists, often in off-camera briefings.Sanders however was due to go in front of the cameras later Friday.Spicers departure dramatically escalates the tensions within the administration over the direction the investigation is taking, and how the White House is responding. No reason was given for Corallos departure, and Spicer so far has remained publicly silent. But the moves come after Trump waded into potentially perilous legal territory by warning investigators not to look into his family finances. In an expansive interview with The New York Times earlier this week, Trump appeared to make that a red line for special counsel Robert Mueller.Mueller is examining whether Trump or his aides colluded with Russias apparent efforts to help tilt the 2016 presidential election in Trumps favor.Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, but has struggled to explain why his eldest son and key aides met Russian operatives who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton.- Fundamental line -With the investigation apparently extending to financial transactions, US media reported that Trump allies were looking into issuing presidential pardons and for ways to discredit Muellers investigation.Trump himself has suggested that Mueller -- a widely respected former FBI director -- may have a conflict of interest. There is NO basis to question the integrity of Mueller or those serving with him in the special counsels office, said former attorney general Eric Holder.Trump cannot define or constrain Mueller investigation. If he tries to do so this creates issues of constitutional and criminal dimension. The White House has pointedly refused to rule out the possibility that Trump would fire Mueller -- an act that would prompt a political firestorm and perhaps a constitutional crisis.Trump has already fired his FBI director James Comey over the Russia investigation and lashed out at his own attorney general Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the probe.Adam Schiff, the leading Democrat on a House of Representatives intelligence committee that is separately investigating Russian actions around the time of the election, also warned that Trump was wandering into dangerous territory. There is no doubt that Mueller has the authority to investigate anything that arises from his investigation into the Trump campaigns ties to Russia, including financial links, Schiff said. The top Democrat on the Senates intelligence committee, Mark Warner, warned that pardoning anybody who may have been involved would be crossing a fundamental line.
