After two delays, SpaceX launches broadband satellite for IntelSat

Posted:

CAPE CANAVERAL (AFP) - SpaceX on Wednesday deployed a broadband communications satellite for IntelSat, after twice ditching launch plans in the final seconds before liftoff earlier this week. The satellite, known as IntelSat 35e, soared into the blue sky over Cape Canaveral at 7:38 pm (2338 GMT), riding a Falcon 9 rocket to a distant, geostationary orbit. The force required to send the payload to space meant SpaceX decided not to attempt to return the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket for an upright landing. The California-based company now regularly lands the tall portion of the rocket back on Earth following launches, as part of its effort to make rocket parts reusable, like airplanes. The launch finally went ahead after two delays earlier this week, both in the last 10 seconds before liftoff.A SpaceX commentator said on the companys launch webcast that Mondays delay came about when a measurement in the rockets first stage avionics system did not meet a preprogrammed software limit, but the rocket was in good shape.Nor was the delay on Sunday due to any flaws with the rocket, SpaceX said.Engineers also spent the US Fourth of July holiday reviewing the rocket for safety issues.SpaceX team reviewed all systems again late last night, SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said on Twitter ahead of the launch.Done our best to ensure all is good. The satellite is the fourth of Intelsats EpicNG next-generation high throughput satellites, and aims to improve wireless connectivity for the Caribbean, Europe and Africa.

Root 'excited' to lead England at last

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root says he feels excited by the prospect of finally leading England in a Test on the eve of the South Africa series opener at Lords.Months of waiting will come to an end on Thursday for the 26-year-old Yorkshire batsman, who was named as Alastair Cooks successor as Test captain back in February.England, however, have been concentrating on limited overs action since then but Thursdays match, the first of a four-Test series, will mark their return to red-ball cricket.Im very excited, Root told reporters at Lords on Wednesday. For it to finally come round has made it feel a little bit more real. I just want to get out there.Root confirmed that Hampshire spinner Liam Dawson would play on Thursday.Meanwhile recalled batsman Gary Ballance will come in at number three, the new skipper at four and their Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow at five.I have had a long time to think about a few things since becoming captain and that is the decision I have made, said Root. I think it is where I play my best cricket.Dawsons inclusion means that, for the second year in a row, uncapped paceman Toby Roland-Jones has missed out on the chance of making a Test debut at his Middlesex home ground. This match will be left-armer Dawsons first Test on home soil after he made a debut in an innings and 75-run defeat by India at Chennai in December. The 27-year-old Dawson made an unbeaten 66 in that match and also took two for 129 in 43 overs, conceding on average just three runs an over. When he came into the side he bowled with great control, said Root of Dawson. He looked very at home and he will complement the rest of the attack as well.Ballance, dropped twice by England, has forced his way back in after piling on the runs for Yorkshire -- he is averaging over 101 in the First Division of the County Championship this season -- even though his last six Test innings have yielded just 49 runs in total. In terms of Gary I look at how he has performed this year and the amount of runs he has scored and he has been phenomenal, said Root of the Zimbabwe-born 27-year-old left-hander.A lot of people asked questions about the last time he played for England but I look at his game now, as do the other selectors, and he is a completely different player.England lost eight Tests last year although they did start 2016 by completing a 2-1 series win in South Africa. We had a tough year last year in Test cricket but I think a lot of the squad is very settled and has learnt a lot from that and is ready to put that right this year, Root said.Root averages over 52 in Test cricket, having scored 11 hundreds in 53 matches at this level.Concerns have been expressed that the responsibility of captaincy might hinder Roots run-scoring.But, having seen fellow leading batsmen Steve Smith (Australia) and Virat Kohli (India) continue to score heavily as Test skippers, the new England captain said: I cant see how Ill approach batting differently.Ive generally prepared as Id normally prepare for any other Test. When I get out in the middle, Ill look -- as I have previously -- to play the situation thats in front of me.South Africa have lost just one away Test series in the last 10 years and Root said: Theyre a side that generally always play well in foreign conditions.Their seamers have proved to be very strong in the past. A lot of the guys have experience of facing them over in South Africa, which should help going into this series. But its about making sure we look after our game now.

Proud Elgar won't let Lord's get to him

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Stand-in South Africa captain Dean Elgar has insisted that while honoured to lead the Proteas in the first Test against England at Lords, he wont be overwhelmed by the occasion. The 30-year-old opening batsman is in charge for the series opener after regular Test captain Faf du Plessis decided to remain at home with his wife following the recent birth of their first child.Du Plessis is, however, expected back in time for this months second of a four-Test series at Trent Bridge. In the meantime it falls to Elgar to lead the side at the home of cricket, where the Proteas have not lost in six Tests since their re-admission to international cricket, a sequence comprising four wins and two draws.Elgar, asked at a Lords news conference on Wednesday how he would feel walking out onto the ground on Thursday, replied by saying it would be the most proud day so far of my career. He added: Everything about Lords seems to want you to do better. You hear all the folklore when youre growing up and you watch it on TV, and it always looks so nice.Once you reach the big arena all those memories come flooding back, and you have your first opportunity to play here and try do well here. Its an enhanced feeling when you get here, an emotion to try and do well. Thats the feeling anywhere in the world, explained Elgar, who has scored seven hundreds in his 35 Tests, with a career batting average of nearly 40.But because Lords has got so much tradition and history its maybe a little bit more than other venues.Elgar stressed that all that had to be put to one side come the match itself, saying: As a captain you have to look at it as another game of cricket. You cant let the occasion get the better of you. Give it the acknowledgement and respect like it does deserve, but youve still got a job to do.Meanwhile Elgar had no doubt he would be able to exert all the authority he required, even though hes set to be in charge for just the one Test.If you take me off the field Im quite a reserved and quiet guy, and if I get to know the individuals Im a bit of a clown. But once I cross the line, you can see it in my batting, Im a bit tougher and more nuggety. In that sense the captaincy vibe will be within those kind of lines -- a little bit more aggressive, a bit more of a fighter out there, maybe taking the play to the opposition.South Africa are a formidable side on the road having lost just one Test series away from home in the last 10 yearsEveryone gets along and tours well, said Elgar. When you are away from home, thats the only family you have.We find a way to make it work for us, added the new skipper. Now Elgar hopes the time he spent with county side Somerset earlier this season, where he scored 517 runs at an average of 47 in the County Championship, will pay dividends during the Test series.I loved it. It was a very good three months for me at Somerset, he said.Im a bit of a cricket thinker. I do watch the game quite closely.Playing against different guys is a good insight, especially if you might face them in the international arena.

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Chinese tourists can now use the popular WeChat messaging app while soaking up the sights in Europe this summer thanks to Dutch telecoms provider KPN.KPN said Thursday it has teamed up with Chinese technology giant Tencent as well as internet video operator Sunway Culture Media to launch the WeChat Go SIM card for Chinese tourists travelling to Europe.WeChat, known as Weixin in China, was launched in 2011 and is the worlds most popular messaging service.Tencent said in May that the app had reached 938 million monthly active users for the quarter, a year-on-year growth of 23 percent.Besides voice and 4G data services, the WeChat Go SIM card proposition also offers additional features such as travel information, Chinese video content, top ups and social media in any EU country, KPN said. The SIM card has been available since the start of the month, and is on sale at Chinese airports as well as other popular travel hubs across Europe. The recommended sale price in Europe is either 12 euros for a 1GB card that is valid for 15 days, or 33.50 euros for a 4GB card valid 28 days. This is for the convenience of the Chinese customers, who can buy it and then put it in their cellphones and use WeChat Go without having to worry about which operator they have to connect to, KPN spokesman Stefan Simons told AFP.While the system would have worked before, the end to roaming charges across the European Union in June may make the SIM card even more attractive to the millions of Chinese tourists who flock to Europe every year.

Anti-mafia raids net 33 suspects in Spain, Italy, Germany

BARCELONA (AFP) - Police detained 33 people in Spain, Italy and Germany on Wednesday as part of a Europe-wide operation against suspected members of Italys Camorra crime group, law enforcement officials said.Over 330 police officers carried out 35 morning raids on homes, restaurants and other businesses in the three countries as part of the operation, European Union police agency Europol said in a statement. The operation aimed to dismantle an international criminal organisation involved in drug trafficking and money laundering, a spokesman for Spains Guardia Civil police force told AFP.He identified the organisation as the Italian Camorra, based in Naples in southern Italy. The group allegedly smuggled large quantities of cocaine and hashish from Spain to Italy, EU anti-crime coordination agency Eurojust said in a statement. The drug proceeds were laundered via reinvestment in catering, food import and export, trade in precious metals and vehicles, and football, it added.Police seized assets worth five million euros ($5.6 million) from the suspects in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Britain as well as 520 kilos of cocaine and 450 kilos of hashish and marijuana, Europol said.Officers arrested 18 suspects in Italy, 12 in Spain and three in Germany, a Eurojust spokeswoman said. The investigation is continuing and further arrests are expected in the near future, Eurojust added.A drug seizure two years ago prompted the probe by the Anti-Mafia Prosecution Office in Naples that led to Wednesdays operation in three countries, said Eurojust.- Strategic location -========================Police regularly detain members of the Italian mafias in Spain. In an interview with El Pais newspaper last month, Italys mafia prosecutor Franco Roberti said his countrys crime syndicates were solidly implanted in Spain. He said the country was a strategic place for them for geographical reasons, and because they think they can go about their business under less scrutiny. Its a strategic location for drug trafficking and offers opportunities for money laundering. They see it as a place to colonise.Spains proximity to Morocco, one of the worlds largest producers of hashish, as well as its close ties with former colonies in Latin America have made it the main entry point of hashish and cocaine into Europe.Several Italian mafia clans have transferred their more risky activities such as drug trafficking to Spain, according to Italian journalist Roberto Saviano, the author of Gomorrah, the best-selling expose on the criminal underworld in Naples.Camorra bosses refer to Spains Mediterranean coast as Costa Nostra, or Our Coast, alluding to the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra, according to Saviano.

Murray storms into Wimbledon third round

LONDON (AFP) - Defending champion Andy Murray stormed into the Wimbledon third round with a ruthless 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 demolition of Dustin Brown on Wednesday.Murray needed only 96 minutes to see off the dreadlocked German on Centre Court as he underlined his return to fitness following a nagging hip injury.Next up for world number one Murray is a clash with colourful Italian 28th seed Fabio Fognini. He started very well, he was coming up with some great drop volleys and really going for the returns, the British star said.Once I got the break in the first set, I felt the momentum was with me. I started to see the shots he was going to play a little but quicker and that allowed me to get to some of the drop volleys and come up with some passing shots. The last three games I didnt serve particularly well. But the rest of the match I served well, I was getting a lot of free points there. He wasnt able to attack my second serve like he tries to do so that was positive.Against guys that play a lot of drop shots and come forward you need to move well, and I did that.Murray said his hip had not affected him at all during his two matches so far.I feel good and hopefully it stays that way, he said.

Tennis: Medvedev sorry for throwing coins at umpire

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Russias Daniil Medvedev stunned Wimbledon on Wednesday when he threw coins at the umpires chair before apologising for the bizarre gesture which he insisted was not meant to imply the official was corrupt. The 21-year-old, who had shocked world number three Stan Wawrinka in the first round, lost 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 to Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans.Medvedev had been 2-0 up in the decider before he lost his composure and asked for female umpire Mariana Alves to be replaced. His request was refused and after shaking hands with the official at the end of the match, he reached into his bag, took out his wallet and threw two handfuls of coins at the umpires chair. In the heat of the moment, I did a bad thing. I apologise for this, said world number 49 Medvedev who had also been docked a point by Alves as his 2-0 final set lead melted into a 5-2 deficit.Medvedev insisted he could not remember what he had said to Alves. It was a long match and very hot. I was just frustrated, so it had no meaning. I apologise for this.It was really stupid but it was not like this (meant as an indication that he considered the official to have biased).I was ready to leave the court, but thats what happened. I dont even remember what the coins were.Wednesdays meltdown on Court 16 was not the first time the fiery Russian has been in trouble at a tournament. He was disqualified from the Charleston clay court event in 2016 for launching into a racist rant, accusing umpire Sandy French of favouring black player Donald Young.French is also black.Medvedev said that incident was a misunderstanding. What I can tell is that Im not racist at all. Thats the only thing I will tell. And about the situation, it was a misunderstanding, he explained after Mondays win against Wawrinka.Bemelmans, who goes on to face Sam Querrey of the United States, said he had realised that his opponent was getting increasingly frustrated at a series of over-rules.There are some players who play better after chatting with the umpire. I said to myself no, keep do what you are doing, its working, you lose nothing. He started to make mistakes so that broke his concentration, discussing with the umpire, said the Belgian. On the coin-throwing incident, he added: I havent seen it. I dont even know what he did there.Obviously in the fifth set after that call on 30-40 at 2-1, he was not happy but I think it was the right call to make. If he wants to be pissed off, thats his problem. Thats his decision. It happens in tennis and he should get over it.
