Shocking rise in power theft, LESCO line losses surge to 21pc

Posted:

LAHORE: (Daily Dunya) – Power theft rose to new levels in Lahore Electricity Supply Company (LESCO) as soon as the summer season set in. From 5.5% during the winters, the power theft has surged to 21% as millions of units were lost in the lines, reported Daily Dunya.According to the statistics obtained by Daily Dunya, the technical faults and line losses amounted to only 5.5% in February this winter when LESCO received 1.21 billion units from the national grid, out of which 1.145 billion units were billed while 65 million were lost in the system. When the temperatures rose a bit in March and electricity usage increased slightly, the line losses immediately rose to 13% as 193 million units out of the total 1.47 billion could not be billed. In April, the line losses increased to 14%; in May, 15.60% and in June to 21%.In June, LESCO received 2.20 billion units from the national grid but could bill only 1.865 billion out of them.It is pertinent to mention here that line losses remain almost the same in all seasons but the ratios change due to the power theft, causing losses worth billions of rupees every year to LESCO.LESCO authorities say that system is being improved and power theft is also being curbed. They claimed that the power theft will drop significantly in the years to come.

Turkey marks coup defeat anniversary with mass rallies

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkey on Saturday marked one year since the defeat of the coup aimed at ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with mass rallies seeking to showcase national unity in a divided society and his grip on power. The authorities have declared July 15 an annual national holiday of democracy and unity, billing the foiling of the putsch as a historic victory of Turkish democracy. Its one year since the darkest night was turned into an epic, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told a special session of parliament that kicked off a day of celebrations set to last until dawn.He said the night of July 15 was a second War of Independence after the war that led to the creation of the modern Turkish state in the ruins of the Ottoman Empire in 1923.Two hundred and forty nine people, not including the plotters, were killed when a disgruntled faction of the army sent tanks into the streets and war planes into the sky in a bid to overthrow Erdogan after one-and-a-half decades in power. But they were thwarted within hours as the authorities regrouped and people poured into the streets in support of Erdogan, who blamed followers of his ally-turned-nemesis, the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen.Hundreds of thousands were gathering on the Asian side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul to hear a speech by Erdogan, who earlier arrived from Ankara on his official plane accompanied by an F-16 fighter jet, an AFP correspondent said. Some carried the Turkish flag while others brandished pictures of the martyrs who died defeating the coup bid as a sea of people stretched from the bridge, which has since been renamed Bridge of the Martyrs of July 15.People chanted we are soldiers of Tayyip (Erdogan) and called for the reinstatement of the death penalty for the coup plotters, with some even brandishing nooses. We are here for the victims, for democracy, for our country for our people and our flag, said Hakan, a resident of Istanbul. At midnight local time (2100 GMT) people across Turkey will take part in democracy watches, rallies commemorating how people poured out into the streets.Outside the lawIn the wake of the failed coup bid, authorities embarked on the biggest purge in Turkeys history, arresting 50,000 people and sacking almost three times as many. Erdogan also shored up his position by winning a referendum on enhancing his powers earlier this year.In the latest dismissals, another 7,563 police, soldiers and other state employees were fired late Friday under the state of emergency that has been in place since July 20 last year.Turkeys opposition put political disputes aside on the night of the putsch but the scale of the purge has intensified political divisions. The celebrations come less than a week after the head of the Republican Peoples Party (CHP) Kemal Kilicdaroglu held the largest opposition rally in Turkey in years, pushing for justice.Over the last year, the judicial proceedings... moved outside the framework of the law, Kilicdaroglu, whose party will boycott commemoration ceremonies later in the day, told parliament. He also called for full clarity over what happened on the night of July 15, with questions still remaining over when the authorities first found out an uprising was afoot. The details need to be made clear in the name of the martyrs and the heroes, he said, accusing the authorities of hindering efforts to find out the truth.Erdogan, who was present at the session, gazed down stonily from the VIP balcony. The coup bid also frayed ties between the United States and European Union with NATO member Turkey, which accused its allies of failing to show solidarity.Gulen has always denied involvement and in a new statement Friday said the accusations were baseless, politically motivated slanders and slammed a witch hunt of Erdogans critics.Epic of July 15The scale of Saturdays nationwide commemorations is aimed at etching July 15, 2016 into the minds of Turks as a key date in the history of the modern state.Giant posters designed by the presidency have sprung up across billboards in Istanbul showing gaudy paintings that portray the key events of the coup night with the slogan the epic of July 15.Public transport is free in Istanbul and Ankara over the weekend while mobile operator Turkcell has sent text messages to clients promising them a free extra gigabyte of data from July 15.Illuminated anti-coup slogans have been hung between the minarets of some of Istanbuls greatest Ottoman mosques.Erdogan will later return to Ankara and at 2300 GMT give a speech in parliament to mark the time it was bombed.A giant monument to those killed -- showing people holding up the Turkish star and crescent insignia -- will then be unveiled outside his palace in the capital as the dawn call to prayer rings out.

Tight security in Jerusalem as holy site closed after attack

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Security forces locked down parts of Jerusalems Old City on Saturday and an ultra-sensitive holy site remained closed after an attack that killed two police officers and heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions.Three Arab Israeli assailants opened fire on Israeli police Friday in the Old City before fleeing to the nearby Haram al-Sharif, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, where they were shot dead by police.Israeli authorities said they had come from the flashpoint holy site, which includes the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock, to commit the attack. The authorities took the highly unusual decision to close the Al-Aqsa mosque compound for Friday prayers, leading to anger from Muslims and Jordan, the holy sites custodian.Wael Arabiyat, Jordans Islamic affairs minister, warned that keeping Al-Aqsa mosque closed is dangerous and unprecedented, a day after Amman on Friday called for its immediate reopening.Hundreds of Jordanians, responding to a Muslim Brotherhood call, demonstrated in Amman after Saturday midday prayers, calling for the liberation of Al-Aqsa.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated the site will stay closed until at least Sunday while security was assessed, and rejected Jordans criticism.Instead of denouncing the terrorist attack, Jordan chose to attack Israel, Netanyahu was quoted as saying by officials, and called for restraint.Netanyahu also spoke of increasing security at entrances to the site when it reopens -- likely to be a controversial move.On Saturday, access was restricted through Damascus Gate, the main entrance used by Palestinians into Jerusalems Old City, and only residents with identification were allowed to pass. This is not security. This is punishment, said Bader Jweihan, 53, an accountant who was denied entry.City for allMusa Abdelmenam Qussam, 73 and with poor eyesight, was helped by a grandson as he walked with a cane and sought to enter. But the owner of a book wholesale shop in the Old City was also turned away. This mosque is not only for Muslims. Tourists come, he said, adding that he usually prays at Al-Aqsa every day. This city is for all the world. It must be open.Jaffa Gate, heavily used by tourists and near the Old Citys Jewish Quarter, was open but with a heavy police presence.A group of tourists from Poland said they were concerned when they heard about Fridays shooting but wanted to continue their visit. They planned to shop in the Old City and visit the nearby Garden of Gethsemane, where Christians believe Jesus prayed the night before his crucifixion. It stressed me a little, said Ewa, who did not want to give her last name.At Lions Gate near the site of the attack, police guarded the entrance and restricted access, checking IDs.The attack and aftermath was one of the most serious incidents in Jerusalem in recent years.Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and Netanyahu spoke by phone on Friday as tensions rose.Israeli authorities also detained Jerusalems top Muslim cleric, grand mufti Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, as crowds gathered at the gates of the Old City after the attack, his son said.Hussein, who had criticised the closure of Al-Aqsa, was released later Friday after being questioned, according to another of his sons.Worst aggressionWith Al-Aqsa closed, crowds gathered at Old City gates and held Friday prayers there instead. The Palestinian director of the Waqf (religious property) council, Abdel Azim Salhab, said the closure of the mosque compound was the worst aggression since 1967 -- a reference to the start of Israels occupation of east Jerusalem which it later annexed. The Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount is central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians fearing Israel may one day seek to assert further control over it.It is considered the third holiest site in Islam and the most sacred for Jews.Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there to avoid provoking tensions.Israels annexation of east Jerusalem after the 1967 Six-Day War was never recognised by the international community.A wave of unrest that broke out in October 2015 has claimed the lives of at least 281 Palestinians or Arab Israelis, 44 Israelis, two Americans, two Jordanians, an Eritrean, a Sudanese and a Briton, according to an AFP toll.Israeli authorities say most of the Palestinians killed were carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks.Others were shot dead in protests and clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. The violence had greatly subsided in recent months.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry on Saturday has denied truth in statements of ministers and commentators over Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s alleged remarks during parliamentary meeting of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).In an interview with a television channel tonight, the spokesperson said that the statement that is being dubbed as interior minister’s is concocted and holds no truth. He urged experts and lawmakers to abstain from affiliating the alleged false statement to Nisar. The ministry spokesperson further said that it is unfortunate that the ministers who are giving condemnable statements like these are the ones who have brought the government to this sensitive stage. The development has come in after it was widely reported that Chaudhry Nisar had confronted PM Nawaz in PML-N’s parliamentary meeting to discuss course-of-action following JIT’s report regarding his policies.Earlier it was reported that Nisar had told Prime Minister (PM)Nawaz Sharif that only a miracle could save him now from the turmoil that the party is in.Sources reported that Nisar during his dialogue with the Prime Minister complained that his sincere suggestions were always ignored. “I always gave you sincere suggestions but my suggestions were ignored,” Ch Nisar said to PM.The Interior Minister who arrived late at the cabinet meeting also said that nobody could doubt his loyalty to the Prime Minister and the party. He advised the PM to avoid confrontation with state institutions. The Prime Minister in his reply to the Interior Minister said that he could have expressed his views in a private meeting. “I ve always encouraged you for your outspokenness and gave you due respect,” PM said.I will give answers to your complains in a private meeting later, PM Nawaz said to the Interior Minister.Sources further said that Ch Nisar walked out of the cabinet meeting when Federal Minister Rana Tanveer was delivering his speech.

Chelsea complete deal for midfielder Bakayoko

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea completed the signing of French international midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday. The 22-year-old joined Antonio Contes Chelsea on a five-year contract for a reported fee of up to 39.7 million ($51.98m, 45.3m euros) after helping the principality side win the Ligue 1 title last season.I am very happy to be here and to join this great team, Bakayoko said in a statement on the Chelsea website.I have grown up watching Chelsea. Signing was the natural thing for me because it is a club I loved very much in my childhood.I am now looking forward to evolving under this fantastic coach and alongside so many great team-mates.Bakayoko was one of the stars of Leonardo Jardims youthful Monaco outfit that surprisingly beat Paris Saint-Germain to the French title in May, while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals.The completion of the deal is a boost for Chelsea manager Conte, after he missed out on former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United. There had been speculation United might try and stymie the bid for Bakayoko just as they did with Lukaku, as they broke the record for a deal between British clubs of 75m to prise him away from Goodison Park on Monday. However, Bakayoko, whom Monaco will make a tidy profit on having signed him from Rennes for 7m in 2014, had always made it clear that Chelsea was his preferred destination.Tiemoue was outstanding as Monaco emerged as one of Europes best sides last season and we are delighted to welcome him to Chelsea, said the Blues technical director Michael Emenalo.Despite his young age he already has plenty of experience as a French title winner, and having competed in the latter stages of the Champions League, we believe he will add considerable quality to our squad.Bakayoko made his international debut in a friendly defeat by Spain in March, and will team up with compatriot NGolo Kante in the Chelsea midfield. His arrival also paves the way for the possible departure from Stamford Bridge of Serbian Nemanja Matic. However, Chelsea are not keen to sell him to the original suitors Manchester United, as relations between the two rivals have cooled considerably since the Lukaku affair.Bakayoko is Chelseas third major signing of the close season so far, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Willy Caballero from Manchester City and Germany centre-back Antonio Rudiger from Roma.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Senior representatives of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Daniyal Aziz and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry among others criticised the opposition over Panamagate probe on Saturday in a press conference. In his speech, Aziz said that ministers were ‘tried on media’ and that he would humbly request the top court to look into JIT findings. He alleged Wajid Zia, head of the JIT of hiring his cousin’s firm in England because he was ‘giving a discount’.He claimed that the government of Sindh has removed National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from the province whereas the federally ruling party, he said, was stressed to resign on ‘most likely’ terms.Aziz claimed that a lot of the people who began giving their two cents after the report was made public did not go through it to know what it had actually stated. He pointed out that the report uses the words ‘most likely’ and ‘ likely’ when it comes to the premier.Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that JIT was formed to probe London flats only and claimed that the report did not mention money laundering and tax evasion. He asserted that the committee sure brought evidence from foreign authorities but could not prove even a hint of corruption within the country.Chaudhry said that the probe team looked into businesses of Sharif family and targeted father of the Prime Minister (PM). He challenged the JIT to bring forth any allegation over corruption or embezzlement in government’s funds.

A year after they murdered Qandeel

Posted:

By Aroma ShahidSocial media sensation, Qandeel Baloch, is remembered for her viral videos on social networking sites that had stirred a much heated debate in Pakistan.June 15 marks a year since she was murdered in Multan for ‘honour’, by her own brother.Qandeel became popular for her videos which were tagged as ‘inappropriate’ and ‘vulgar’ on social media yet also managed to gain a wide audience. During her short period under the spotlight, Qandeel Baloch constantly challenged the country’s obsession with claiming ownership over women. Her actions baffled everyone including the progressive, the conservatives, and also feminists, as she developed a love-hate relationship with her viewers who guiltily indulged in gawking over every video she posted and later, took to social media to post hate messages, insults, and even rape or death threats.Qandeel did not become popular on mainstream media until 2016 when she, in a video posted on Facebook, promised to perform a strip-tease for Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi if Pakistan won a match against India.By June 2016, Qandeel shot to fame after she posted her selfies with Mufti Abdul Qawi, a member of the religious clergy whom she visited. The pictures circulated on social media and stirred a controversy. Qawi came under fierce criticism. In his defence, Qawi said the meeting had intended to ‘guide her’. However, Baloch took to mocking Qawi and said that she had exposed the hypocritical identity of the Pakistani male.Mufti Qawi faced criticism for meeting social media star Qandeel Baloch. Courtesy: FacebookShe later announced that she was receiving death threats and abuses for humiliating a religious cleric but she remained adamant on, what she termed was aimed at, publicly shaming the double standards of a patriarchal society. In an interview with The Express Tribune, Qawi said, “Those who want to humiliate clerics must learn from Qandeel Baloch’s fate. Those who have done so must repent and should ask forgiveness from clerics as well as Almighty Allah.”The incident took the internet sensation to new heights of fame as she became the centre of mainstream media attention. Although, she carefully selected what parts of her life to expose, the secret about her real identity, that of Fauzia Azeem, was revealed as interest surrounding her life increased with growing controversy over her social media posts. Her defiance was hard to miss. She was allegedly murdered by her own brother who publicly confessed that he was being bullied by his male friends for ‘allowing’ his sister to bring shame to their ‘family honour’ by exposing herself before the world. Her death was met with a mix of emotions and stirred confusion as the debate on morality continued.Pakistan faces around 1,000 honour killings cases every year, according to a report by Human Rights Commission Pakistan, and women continue to be victims of the incompetent and unfair legal system.Even her death had sparked a debate both within and outside the country, as both local and international media highlighted the case.Qandeel’s death was reported by media outlets from all around the world. The show aims at highlighting her struggles and the obstacles she faced while trying to become popular enough to provide financial support to her family.Saba Qamar will play Qandeel’srole in an upcoming biopic. Courtesy: Instagram“If anyone, it’s the people who need to be blamed for making Qandeel a social media sensation. If no one had followed her, she would not have made what she did. It’s they who are responsible for her death,” Saba said in an exclusive interview withMid-day.Filmmaker Saad Khan took the initiative to share stories about her life in the words of the women who knew her better than anyone - her mother and sister. If I die, there won’tbe another Qandeel Baloch for a hundred years - Qandeel. Courtesy: Qandeel ki Kahani (Facebook).Their narration provides an insight into her life that was never highlighted before through a series titled ‘Qandeel ki Kahani’.In one of the stories, her sister recalls an incident when Qandeel got lost on her way to meet her grandmother and ended up at Edhi home. Abdul Sattar Edhi personally dropped her off to her parent’s residence but she was not allowed to attend school after the incident.Qandeel’s sister said in the interview: “Whatever happened to my sister, first it was Mufti Qawi, and then it was the media who caused my sister’s death,”

Common chemicals in plastic linked to chronic disease

Posted:

(Online) -Plastics are all around us. They are used in everything from tents to trains and are often part of the packaging that surrounds our food and drink products.A study published this week in the journal Environmental Research takes a fresh look at the links between phthalates and long-term health. The researchers involved are based at the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. The team was headed up by associate professor Zumin Shi, from the University of Adelaide’s Medical School. This matches up with previous work showing that increasing age and Western diets are associated with higher concentrations of phthalates. Earlier studies have also shown that phthalate levels are higher in men who consume more packaged and processed foods, more carbonated soft drinks, and less fresh fruits and vegetables.Levels of the chemicals in each individual were then matched up with chronic diseases. We found that the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure increased among those men with higher total phthalate levels. While we still don’t understand the exact reasons why phthalates are independently linked to disease, we do know the chemicals impact on the human endocrine system, which controls hormone release that regulate[s] the body’s growth, metabolism, and sexual development and function.Alongside the connection between elevated phthalate levels and chronic disease, the team also found that higher levels are associated with an increase in inflammatory biomarkers. This backs up other work demonstrating the pro-inflammatory effects of phthalates.Chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, are often referred to as lifestyle diseases. This is because lifestyle factors, such as inactivity, diet, and smoking, play a significant role in their development. However, over recent years, there has been interest in examining other potential environmental factors that might be at work, and phthalate ingestion is one such factor.Although the study leaves us with more questions than answers, Prof. Shi gives some sound advice, saying, While further research is required, reducing environmental phthalates exposure where possible, along with the adoption of healthier lifestyles, may help to reduce the risk of chronic disease.
