Holder inspires West Indies to stunning victory

Posted:

NORTH SOUND (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder led from the front with a five-wicket haul as his side snatched an 11-run win over India in the fourth one-day international in Antigua on Sunday.India came into the match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium leading 2-0 in the series and set a modest target of 190 to maintain their unbeaten run in this short campaign. But the visitors were undone by a combination of disciplined West Indies bowling and their own inexplicable lethargy at the crease. That pedestrian progress was typified by Mahendra Singh Dhonis painstaking innings of 54 off 114 deliveries -- the slowest of his 64 ODI half-centuries -- before he fell off the last ball of the 49th over bowled by Kesrick Williams. That left India needing 15 runs off the final over with only two wickets in hand.It was Williams only success of a miserly 10-over spell but proved critical as Holder sealed the win which keeps the series alive heading into the fifth and final match in Kingston on Thursday. He dismissed Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami in the space of four balls to finish with five for 27, his best-ever ODI figures as India folded for 178.At the halfway stage there were a few heads dropping in the dressing room but it took a big effort and Im really pleased to play a part in keeping us in the series, said Holder after receiving the man of the match award. We targeted getting wickets at the front to challenge their other batters who havent had much work to do of late. It worked this time.Ajinkya Rahanes excellent form at the top of the order continued with a top score of 60, but the rest of the Indian batting struggled to establish any sort of momentum as the West Indies showed discipline and purpose with the ball.Young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, brought into the team in place of medium-pacer Miguel Cummins, set the tone for the fightback with the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik.Meanwhile, Holder removed his Indian counterpart, Virat Kohli, for the second time in as many matches via a top-edged hook. Our shot selection wasnt up to mark but credit to the West Indies bowlers for the pressure they put on us to force those mistakes, said Kohli in assessing his teams surprise defeat.I am sure the guys are going to come back extra hard for the final match. We just needed a complete performance and today wasnt one.Ealier, pacers Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya claimed three wickets each while wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav again teased and tormented the West Indies batsmen in adding two more victims to his series haul as the hosts limped to 189 for nine batting first. While each of the top five managed to get a start, none could get past 35 as India exerted almost complete control over a line-up that lacked the inspirational spark to put the opposition under pressure.Openers Evin Lewis and Kyle Hope were the joint top scorers with 35 apiece although their slow progress -- the opening stand of 57 was broken in the 18th over -- meant those who followed were required to pick up the pace.None managed to do so for any sustained period with Pandya and Kuldeep doing the bulk of the damage to the West Indies batting line-up early on.Umesh then ensured there was to be no threat from the reputed lower-order big-hitters as he accounted for Holder, Rovman Powell and Ashley Nurse in his second spell.India had rung the changes for this match with Karthik replacing Yuvraj Singh in the middle-order, Ravindra Jadeja coming in as a specialist spinner for Ravichandran Ashwin and Shami making his first ODI appearance since the 2015 World Cup as Bhuvneshwar Kumar was rested.

Teen Hasaranga bags debut hat-trick as S. Lanka crush Zimbabwe

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Teenager Wanidu Hasaranga took a hat-trick on his international debut as Sri Lanka took revenge on Zimbabwe with a seven wicket drubbing in their second one day international on Sunday.Fellow-spinner Lakshan Sandakan also took four wickets, to earn the man-of-the-match award, as Sri Lanka hit back at their critics with a confident performance in Galle.Sri Lanka bowled out Zimbabwe for 155 and then reached 158-3 in 30.1 overs. Upul Tharanga ended unbeaten on 75. The win relieved pressure on Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews after the squad was accused of being unfit by the countrys sports minister.I wouldnt call it a clinical performance, he said. We still dropped catches. But Mathews said Sri Lankas attitude and intensity was superb. We just need to regroup, and it was great effort from the boys. The captain hailed Sandakan and Hasaranga, two of the three changes made after Zimbabwe tore apart the Sri Lanka bowlers in their six wicket win on Friday.Sandakan was brilliant, so was Wanidu. Credit should go to the selectors to pick him. I, honestly, havent seem him much, Mathews said of the newcomer.Nineteen-year-old all-rounder Hasaranga bowled only 16 balls but tore through Zimbabwes tail.Malcolm Waller hit Hasaranga for four but was bowled the next ball going for another big hit. The teenager then snapped up Donald Tiripano and Tendai Chatara with googlies.Mathews won the toss and put Zimbabwe into bat. Hasaranga replaced Lahiru Madushanka with fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera and Sandakan coming in for Amila Aponso and Akila Dananjaya.Zimbabwe looked rocky from the start. Solomon Mire, who scored his maiden one-day century in Fridays win, was out for zero after facing just five balls.Hamilton Masakadza scored a patient 41 and Waller hit out for his late 38. But Zimbabwe never got to grips with Sri Lankas spinners. We thought the wicket was a little bit different. Maybe 230 would have been a good score, said Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer. It was just one of those days.Zimbabwe could have worries over bowler Tendai Chatara before the third of the five internationals on Thursday in Hambantota. Charata walked off with a suspected knee injury. The two sides will also play a Test during Zimbabwes tour.

Bangladesh confident Hathurusingha's stay

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs cricket authorities expressed confidence Sunday that national head coach Chandika Hathurusingha will see out his contract despite interest from his native Sri Lanka.Anyone can want him as coach, but we have not spoken to him about (Sri Lanka), Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan told reporters in Dhaka. We have a contract with him until World Cup 2019. We are confident he will stay up to that period, he said. His comments came after Sri Lankan media revealed that Sri Lanka Cricket are in discussion with the former opening batsman to take over the side following the resignation of South African Graham Ford.Ford stepped down in late June, half way through a 45-month contract and just two weeks after the teams early exit from the Champions Trophy.Fielding coach Nic Pothas is in interim charge of the team that is currently playing a home series against Zimbabwe.Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala said Pothas was being considered for promotion to permanent head coach while the cricket board has had several other expressions of interest over the job. Those interested in the high profile position included Sri Lankans, he told AFP last week.Under Hathurusingha, Bangladesh has made big strides in world cricket and reached the semifinals of the Champions Trophy tournament in England.

Barry Richards uncertain about South Africa's transformation plan

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africa great Barry Richards has questioned whether the current policy of racial transformation will end with merit selection. The policy is designed to cope with the legacy of apartheid, when largely only white players such as Richards, the outstanding opening batsman of the 1970s, were allowed to play for official South Africa sides. But the policy and its implementation have proved contentious amid suggestions that players have not always been chosen on merit and that some white cricketers, knowing their chances were in some way restricted, have instead chosen to pursue financially more lucrative careers with English county sides. However, while transformation has seen the likes of Andile Phehlukwayo and Temba Bavuma possibly get their international chances earlier than expected, both have justified their selections in terms of performance.Richards, speaking ahead of next weeks first Test between England and South Africa at Lords, accepted it was a contentious issue. Its a difficult one, said Richards at an event staged by series sponsors Investec.South Africa has come from a history of what we know, added Richards, whose own Test career was limited to just four matches because of the apartheid-induced sports boycott of South Africa. As of last August, Cricket South Africa defined the policy as one where national teams should include on average and across all formats, six players of colour, of which two must be black African. The target at domestic level is a stricter six players of colour per side per match, of which three must be black African. But for many years the issue was not so well defined and Richards said: I dont think they (CSA) make it clear enough to the fans and then you have people on social media having a go at each other.Richardss globe-trotting career saw him play for a multi-racial Rest of the World side when South Africas 1970 tour of England was cancelled and open for Hampshire alongside West Indies great Gordon Greenidge. From day one, when I came to play county cricket and I first met Garry Sobers, people like that, picking a team was on merit, Ive always been of that opinion, said Richards.Whether you can do that in the South African context... I think were now were far enough along the line to say we can pick it (the South Africa team) on merit. Where its causing a problem is a little further down the line. Then youve got this transformation policy where an Indian player like Hashim (Amla) becomes different from a black player like (Kagiso) Rabada in terms of team selection. Its a machination of politics and sport, its always been a mix but never been a great mix.The transformation policy, I can see what they are trying to achieve, but whether they achieve the end goal of a merit selection remains to be seen. There are several South African players who have effectively called time on their international careers in order to be classed as home selections by counties under the so-called Kolpak rule.Hampshire alone have two in fast bowler Kyle Abbott and top-order batsmen Rilee Rossouw.Neither they nor any of the other current Kolpaks have specifically listed transformation as a reason for their decision but there are many who believe it played a part, just as South Africa-born batsman Kevin Pietersen said it was a factor in his move to represent England. You can understand, if you are a fringe player, Kyle Abbott is 29, not an automatic selection, what do I do? Should I go the Kolpak route?, said Richards. There are 17 rand to the pound, its a temptation. Im surprised more havent gone that route. He added: But the Kolpak players, your back-up players are very important. If those guys are saying we dont like it because we might not be part of the set-up, thats something else youve got to factor into how you implement transformation. Its a problem and Im not sure they (CSA) quite know what the solution is just yet.

Trump seen beating 'CNN' in new video

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on the news media Sunday by tweeting a video -- bizarre even by his standards -- showing him knocking down and beating a professional wrestling villain whose face had been replaced by a CNN logo. The 10-year-old video, hailing back to Trumps days as a guest celebrity at pro-wrestling events, came after a week in which his unrestrained Twitter attacks on two MSNBC talk show hosts drew widespread condemnation from members of both political parties. The latest tweet was immediately condemned by journalists, who said Trump seemed to be promoting violence against the media, while a Republican lawmaker said the president was trying to weaponize distrust through his postings. But administration officials insisted Trump has a right to respond to critical coverage. In the 28-second video, Trump, in a suit and tie, is seen knocking down another man in a suit who is standing next to a wrestling ring. Trump repeatedly pummels the fallen man, whose face is covered by the CNN logo. A fake CNN logo then appears on the screen reading FNN: Fraud News Network.A longer version of the video online shows that the man being beaten was World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) owner-promoter Vince McMahon, a friend of Trumps. In that version, Trump also gets in the ring to shave McMahons head as part of the The Battle of the Billionaires at the WrestleMania 23 event.McMahon was present at the White House in February to pose smilingly with the president when his wife Linda McMahon -- herself a former WWE executive -- was sworn in as Trumps Small Business Administration chief.Encouraging violence?Trump has recently stepped up his attacks on the news media. Besides the crude attack on MSNBC co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski -- he called her low I.Q. and said he had seen her bleeding after a facelift -- he has also specifically bashed outlets including CNN, NBC, The Washington Post and The New York Times.Amid a torrent of criticism over his attack on Brzezinski, Trump doubled down Saturday, tweeting: My use of social media is not Presidential - its MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great AgainWith Trumps tweets coming just weeks after a mass shooting at a congressional baseball practice, reporters on Thursday asked White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders whether his rhetoric might be promoting violence. She replied: The president in no way, form or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence. If anything, quite the contrary. But the wrestling video prompted a wave of new recriminations. It is a sad day when the president of the United States encourages violence against reporters, CNN said in a statement. Clearly, Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied when she said the president had never done so.CNN went on to suggest that instead of engaging in juvenile behavior far below the dignity of his office, Trump should be focusing on issues like health care, tensions with North Korea and his upcoming trip to Germany for a G-20 summit and his first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.A right to respondA White House official, homeland security adviser Thomas Bossert, defended Trumps video and said it demonstrated the presidents genuine ability to communicate to the people.I think that no one would perceive that as a threat, he said on ABC. I hope they dont. I do think that hes beaten up in a way on cable platforms that he has a right to respond. But Republican Senator Ben Sasse rejected that argument, saying on CNN that while a politician has a right to complain about bad coverage, there is a difference between that and trying to weaponize distrust.Meanwhile, several journalists said they feared Trump was stirring up anti-media violence.Annie Lowrey, a former New York Times reporter now with The Atlantic magazine, tweeted: In seriousness, I am terrified that a journalist -- perhaps one of the many political reporters I know and love -- is going to end up dead.
