Macron chides Netanyahu on settlements, urges new Mideast talks

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - French President Emmanuel Macron told Israels visiting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that Paris opposes Israels expansion of settlements in occupied Palestinian territory as he urged fresh Middle East peace talks.Stressing that international law should be respected by all, Macron said: I am thinking here of (Israels) continued building in occupied Palestinian territory.Israelis and Palestinians should be able to live side by side within secure and recognised borders with Jerusalem as the capital, Macron said after his first official talks with Netanyahu.I hope everything will be done for negotiations to move forward, he said.Talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been at a standstill since the failure of US mediation in the spring of 2014.Macron, elected in May, appears to be following the proactive line taken by his Socialist predecessor Francois Hollande, whose efforts to mobilise the international community on the peace process angered Israel. The French leader met Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas on Wednesday, when he said he backed a two-state solution and opposed Israeli settlements.France has always condemned the continuation of settlement building, which is illegal under international law and has reached an unprecedented level since the beginning of the year, he said in his first public remarks on the conflict since taking office. The United Nations reported in June that Israel had announced a substantial increase in settlements in the past three months despite a UN resolution demanding a halt to the Jewish outposts.Earlier Sunday, Macron and Netanyahu underscored their two countries longstanding friendship as they marked the 75th anniversary of a notorious 1942 roundup of 13,000 Jews to be sent to Nazi death camps.Netanyahu was the first Israeli prime minister to attend a Vel dHiv commemoration, and he said the invitation was a very, very strong gesture.Macron addressed Netanyahu as dear Bibi and called anti-Zionism a new form of anti-Semitism.Netanyahus presence at the event drew fire from some groups, notably the Union of French Jews for Peace, which accused the Israeli government of usurping the memory of the victims of Nazism to make people believe that Israel represents all the worlds Jews.During their talks afterwards, Macron assured Netanyahu of his vigilance regarding the 2015 nuclear accord reached by Western powers with Israels arch-enemy Iran.Netanyahu was a vocal opponent of the deal, which saw sanctions against Iran eased in return for curbs on its nuclear programme. The French presidency said Sundays meeting would be an occasion to signal our lack of complacency towards Iran.Since taking office, Macron has drawn praise for his balanced but firm handling of encounters with world leaders such as US President Donald Trump and his Russian opposite number Vladimir Putin.Macron rolled out the red carpet for Trump on Friday when he was guest of honour for Frances Bastille Day festivities. The French leader criticised Trump over his renunciation of the Paris climate accord, but he stressed their close cooperation against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.Similarly with Putin, whom Macron hosted at the sumptuous Versailles palace in May, the French leader stood firm on French opposition to Russias annexation of Ukraine in 2014.But he said the removal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad -- Moscows chief ally in the Middle East -- was not a prerequisite to a solution to the six-year-old conflict in Syria.

Syria war has killed more than 330,000: monitor

BEIRUT (AFP) - More than 330,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict since it started six years ago, around a third of them civilians, a monitor said on Sunday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it has documented the deaths of 331,765 people across Syria since the conflict erupted in mid-March 2011 with anti-government protests.Included in the overall death toll are 99,617 civilians, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP, adding that the figures were for the period between March 15, 2011 and July 15, 2017.A total of 18,243 children and 11,427 women were among the civilians killed, the Observatory said. The figures were the latest provided by the Observatory since March when it said 320,000 people, including 96,000 civilians, had been killed. In its latest report, the Observatory said a total of 116,774 members of the regime forces or regime supporters have been killed in Syria since the conflict began.Of those, it said 61,808 were soldiers and 1,408 were members of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, an Iran-backed regime ally. Also killed in Syria since the conflict erupted were 57,000 rebels, including from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, an Arab-Kurdish alliance. In addition, more than 58,000 jihadists, namely from the Islamic State group and Al-Qaedas former Syria affiliate, were killed, said the Observatory, noting that the figure also includes foreign extremists. The conflict broke out with peaceful anti-government protests but quickly turned into a fully fledged war involving a multitude of local, regional and foreign powers. The brutal conflict has destroyed much of the countrys infrastructure and displaced millions of people, more than half of Syrias population.

Trump back on offensive after brief respite in Paris

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Donald Trump, fresh from a political holiday in Paris, went back on the offensive Sunday as a new poll showed his popularity dropping amid doubts about Russian election meddling and deepening frustrations over stalled health-care legislation. In a tweet early Sunday, Trump used some of his toughest language against a favored target, the press, saying: With all of its phony unnamed sources & highly slanted & even fraudulent reporting, Fake News is DISTORTING DEMOCRACY in our countryTrump also sent one of his private lawyers, Jay Sekulow, onto five Sunday talk shows to argue that there was nothing illegal about son Donald Trump Jr.s meeting last year with a Russian attorney following a promise of damaging information on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. What took place at the meeting... is not a violation of any law, statute or code, Sekulow told NBC. He repeated an earlier assertion that Trump is not the subject of any current investigation into alleged Russian efforts to tilt last years election in the Republicans favor. The concerted pushback came as a Washington Post-ABC News poll near the six-month point in Trumps administration showed him facing significantly declining approval ratings, down from 42 percent in April to 36 percent today.Similarly, the presidents disapproval rating has jumped five points to 58 percent, according to the survey of 1,001 adults.Trump responded to the survey in a tweet, saying: The ABC/Washington Post Poll, even though almost 40% is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election timeNearly half of respondents -- 48 percent -- said they disapprove strongly of the presidents performance in office, a low level never reached by ex-presidents Bill Clinton or Barack Obama, both Democrats, and reached only once by George W. Bush, during his second term. And 48 percent said they saw American global leadership weakening since Trump entered the White House, while 27 percent said it is stronger. That would seem to show mixed results, at best, from a series of high-profile foreign visits by Trump, including to Saudi Arabia and to a Group of 20 meeting in Germany, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trumps Bastille Day visit to Paris came a day after the poll ended.Two-thirds of respondents said they do not trust Trump, or trust him only somewhat, in negotiating with foreign leaders.Republicans legislative struggles may also be weighing on Trumps popularity. Twice as many of those surveyed preferred the Obamacare health program as favored Republican plans to replace it.The US Senate will defer its work on repealing Obamacare for a week as senior lawmaker John McCain recovers from blood-clot surgery, the chambers Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, said Saturday. The repeal effort is opposed by all Democrats, and the loss of a single Republican vote could doom it.Trump had seemed to revel in his brief Parisian respite from all the talk of Russia and health care. He and President Emmanuel Macron reviewed a pomp-filled Bastille Day military parade and dined in a posh restaurant on the Eiffel Tower. The US president then spent two days playing maitre d to professional female golfers taking part in a tournament at his Bedminster course in New Jersey. Wearing his signature red Make America Great Again hat, the president waved to cheering onlookers Sunday as he entered a glass-enclosed viewing booth.Trump was due to fly back to Washington in the evening. But his return brings him straight back into the intensifying storm over his campaigns contacts with Russia.Even some erstwhile supporters seem to be troubled by the Russia contacts of Trumps son and advisers, and by the administrations shifting explanations.Shepard Smith, an anchor on Fox, a network that has often been in lock-step with the Trump White House, accused the administration of mind-boggling deception. He added, If theres nothing there, and thats what they tell us, why all these lies? And key Democrats, like Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate intelligence committee investigating Russian meddling, have expressed deep skepticism over administration attempts to gloss over the Trump Jr. meeting.News of the meeting was very troubling, said Warner. Clearly this administration has not been forthcoming. He told a CBS interviewer he wanted to hear from everyone who attended the meeting -- which would include Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign head Paul Manafort -- adding that the recent revelation obviously moves our whole investigation to another level.

Fresh Brexit talks begin with 'clock ticking'

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Britain and the European Union launch a new round of fraught Brexit negotiations Monday with Brussels pressing weakened British Prime Minister Theresa May to quickly set out her divorce strategy.Brexit minister David Davis travels to Brussels to meet Michel Barnier, the EUs chief negotiator, for a second round of hugely complex haggling on Britains withdrawal from the bloc, scheduled for March 2019.Ahead of four days of talks this week, Frenchman Barnier warned that the hard work starts now following the largely ceremonial first round of talks in June, and that the clock was ticking to reach a deal. The EU has demonstrated increasing confidence in recent weeks, accusing Britain of dithering over whether it wants a hard or soft Brexit more than a year after the shock referendum that propelled May to power.Davis said the focus would be the sensitive issue of citizens rights, and that real progress was paramount. We made a good start last month, and this week well be getting into the real substance, Davis said in a statement ahead of the talks.Barnier and Davis last month agreed on a potential timetable for negotiations towards a future trade relationship, which Britain would like to start as soon as possible. But Brussels insists it will only start discussing the future once there has been sufficient progress on key issues involved in Britains withdrawal -- an estimated 100-billion-euro ($112 billion) exit bill, citizens rights, and the border in Northern Ireland. On each one of these early phase topics, our goal is to ensure that we are all working from the same basis with shared goals, Barnier told reporters on Wednesday. The four days of talks are set to also address more detailed concerns such as Britains future in Euratom, the EUs nuclear safety agency, and the role of the European Court of Justice, the EUs top court.Common ground was very much lacking last week after British foreign minister Boris Johnsons remarked that the EU could go whistle over its massive Brexit bill demand, drawing a rebuke from Barnier.I am not hearing any whistling, just the clock ticking, said the former European Commissioner and French foreign minister.UK finance minister Philip Hammond said Sunday that Britain will take responsibility for the money it owes, but dismissed the 100 billion euro figure as ridiculous.Barnier last week held a series of meetings in Brussels with British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and other UK figures at odds with May.My door is open, listen to all Brexit views, Barnier tweeted after talks with Corbyn, Scotlands Nicola Sturgeon and Waless Carwyn Jones. Barniers deputy met with Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, with Brexit having reignited a sovereignty row between Britain and Spain over the rocky Mediterranean outcrop. They are all deeply wary of Mays hardline approach that would see the UK leave the EU without full access to the blocs single market of 500 million people, in order to curb free immigration from the bloc.Mays minority government remains fragile one month after the snap June 8 election in which her Conservative Party lost its majority, forcing it to seek an alliance with Northern Irelands small ultra-conservative Democratic Unionist Party. The tensions have shaken the British government, which on Thursday introduced the draft law that would formally put an end to Britains membership of the European Union.May faces a battle over the bill, which opponents said included a dangerous power grab by London at the expense of Scotland and Wales.Hammond, a potential rival to May, acknowledged that ministers were divided on many elements of Brexit, after weekend newspapers were filled with reports of in-fighting.I think on many fronts it would be helpful if my colleagues -- all of us -- focused on the job in hand. This government is facing a ticking clock over the Brexit negotiations, Hammond said.

Marriyum castigates PTI chief for his hypocrisy

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (APP): The Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Marriyum Aurangzeb responding to the fulminations of Imran Khan at PTI workers convention on Sunday, wherein he accused the government of attacking the state institutions and vowed to defend their honour, strongly castigated him for what she termed as sheer hypocrisy on his part.In a statement issued here Sunday, she asked that how a person who had been abusing the state institutions, had attacked the parliament and hung dirty clothes on the premises of the Supreme Court, could talk about defending and upholding their sanctity and honour? She said Imran Khan had used Zakat funds for money laundering and was a fugitive from three courts but he still had the audacity to point accusing fingers at others and ask for their accountability. Marriyum advised Imran to unlock the Ehtsab Commission of KPK and put that lock on his own wagging tongue. The MOS said Imran was a liar, a thief and a mentally deranged person and the entire nation was witness to that. Marriyum said the workers of PTI had seen the real face of Imran and were deserting him to join other political parties and the masses were well aware of what he was doing to them. She said PTI had become a party of the corrupt elements and carpet-baggers. She advised Imran to wait for the SC decision, adding the primeminister would emerge triumphant like always and Imran would have to eat dust.Referring to his calls to the party workers to come on streets, she said if Nawaz Sharif gave a call to his party workers then Imran would have no place to hide. The minister said the people of Pakistan would not spare Imran for what he had been doing during the last four years.

Amla leaves England with mountain to climb in second Test

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Hashim Amla helped South Africa pile on the runs to leave England facing what would be a record-breaking chase in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Sunday.South Africa set England 474 to win after declaring their second innings on 343 for nine late on the third day.The most made by any side to win in the fourth innings of a Test is the West Indies 418 for seven against Australia at St Johns, Antigua, in 2002/03.Englands corresponding record is 332 for seven against Australia at Melbourne back in 1928/29.On Sunday, England were left with a tricky four overs batting before stumps.South Africa nearly had a wicket with the very first ball when Alastair Cook was given out lbw to Morne Morkel. But Cook immediately reviewed umpire Paul Reiffels decision and, with replays indicating the ball would have gone over the stumps, the former Australia pacemans verdict was overturned.Cook and fellow left-hander Keaton Jennings survived to both be nought not out at the close, with England one for none courtesy of a leg bye.Earlier Amla, so often a thorn in Englands side, made 87 -- his second fifty of the match.Opener Dean Elgar (80) and returning captain Faf du Plessis (63) were also among the runs as the Proteas, 1-0 behind in the four-match series after a 211-run defeat in the first Test at Lords last week, cemented their already strong position in this match.I have a big smile on my face but there is a long road to go, Elgar told Sky Sports. Our message after Lords was that we hadnt become bad players overnight and that we should clear our minds and put those bad thoughts to bed, added Elgar, the stand-in skipper at the home of cricket after du Plessis was absent following the birth of his first child. We have a lot of character and we wanted to show it.Meanwhile England bowling coach Ottis Gibson said: It is a great game to win from here. You have to give a lot of credit to South Africa. The Proteas resumed on 75 for one.Elgar was 38 not out and Amla 23 not out, with England desperately needing early wickets after yet another batting collapse left them 130 runs adrift on first innings.Stuart Broad, on his Nottinghamshire home ground, produced an excellent delivery to Amla, on 25, which carried to wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow.England appealed half-heartedly and decided against reviewing Australian umpire Simon Frys not out decision, only for replays to show a nick.Elgar had a reprieve on 55 when a thick edge off Broad flew high to gully where a diving James Anderson so nearly held a spectacular catch. But Elgar, who had demonstrated a resilience and ability to soak up pressure so far lacking among Englands top three in this match, eventually fell when he took his eye off a Ben Stokes bouncer and tamely mis-hooked to Anderson at backward square leg.England bowled tightly either side of lunch but with South Africa long in command, their batsmen had no need to take undue risks.Closing in on what would have been his 27th Test century and seventh against England, Amla -- who made 78 in the first innings -- fell 13 short this time around.Trying to whip left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, whom hed earlier hit for a straight six to complete his fifty, Amla was struck on the pad.Reiffel rejected the lbw appeal but Englands review was successful and Amla -- who made South Africas Test record 311 not out against England at The Oval in 2012 -- was out.It was the end of a near five-hour innings of 180 balls including 14 fours and that lone six.Du Plessis saw his patient vigil of 128 balls, including nine fours, end when he was lbw to Stokes with the new ball. But Vernon Philander, with grey clouds having given way to blue skies, slog-swept sixes off two successive deliveries from Moeen Ali before the off-spinner caught and bowled him for 42 to prompt du Plessiss declaration.

Raza 97 puts Zimbabwe on top in Sri Lanka Test

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sikandar Raza hit a gritty 97 not out to help Zimbabwe recover from a top-order collapse and stretch their second innings lead over Sri Lanka to 262 in the one-off Test on Sunday. The visitors were 252 for six at stumps on day three, with Raza and Malcolm Waller (57) putting on an unbeaten 107-run stand for the seventh-wicket at Colombos R Premadasa Stadium.Raza lifted Zimbabwe from a precarious 23-4, followed by 59-5, after Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath rattled the visitors batting with four early wickets.Herath, who got three wickets before the lunch break, bowled Sean Williams for 22 in the second session as Zimbabwe teetered dangerously close to losing their 10-run advantage. It was then that Raza put together 86 runs with Peter Moor (40) for the sixth wicket to turn the tables on Sri Lanka. Moor fell to paceman Lahiru Kumara.Raza, who registered his fifth Test fifty, used the sweep shot to great effect against the spinners as he found another partner in Waller to thwart the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The dressing room was very quiet after the lunch break as we were 23-4. Then we said to ourselves, lets fight back and show that we mean business, Waller told reporters. We have created history in the ODI series and we have a great chance here as well. If we can get another 100 runs that will give us a good chance to win this Test, Waller, whose side eye their first-ever Test win over Sri Lanka, added.Earlier skipper Graeme Cremer helped Zimbabwe take the lead after claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in a Test, helping bowl Sri Lanka for 346 in the morning session. But it was Heraths left-arm spin that undid the fine work from leg-spinner Cremer (5-125).Herath, who registered his 30th Test five-wicket haul in the first innings, ran riot at the start of Zimabwes second essay to get the wickets of Hamilton Masakadza, Tarisai Musakanda and Regis Chakabva.Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera joined forces to get the prized wicket of first-innings centurion Craig Ervine for five at the stroke of lunch.Sri Lankas interim coach Nic Pothas, who took over the job after Graham Ford prematurely ended his contract last month, was not surprised by the visiting sides fighting qualities. The fight that Zimbabwe have shown is not surprising at all. They have a quality support staff and they have some fine players, said Pothas, who represented South Africa in three ODIs.I have played against Zimbabwe when I was playing for South Africa and they used to always put up good fights.

Vaughan slams 'appalling' England batting

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Former England captain Michael Vaughan blasted the current sides appalling batting in the ongoing second Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge, saying they need to show more respect for five-day cricket.England lost seven wickets for 62 runs as they slumped to 205 all out on Saturdays second day in reply to South Africas first innings 335.The hosts collapse left the Proteas with a huge advantage of 130 runs as they looked to level the four-match series at 1-1 after a 211-run defeat in the first Test at Lords last week.Only captain Joe Root (78) and Yorkshire colleague Jonny Bairstow (45) made scores of note, with all-rounder Ben Stokes out for a duck. The England batting has been appalling, Ashes-winning skipper Vaughan said while commentating on BBC Radios Test Match Special.Maybe its a lack of respect about what the game is.Vaughan, one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, added: They look like they are playing a Twenty20 game.I look at the approach -- yes, the ball has done a little bit but its not been drastic. They have this approach of attack, attack, attack. There is no thought or feeling of seeing off a bowler or wearing a team down.Englands lack of top order Test runs has been a worry for some time and Vaughan said batsmen needed to master the art of occupying the crease. The (batsmen) dont trust their techniques to stay in long enough, he explained.Thats a concern. England regularly collapse. Its always when the ball does a little bit. Look at the way South Africa played.A lot of Englands players look like they are premeditating their shots. The best way is to watch the ball and react.I worry about the mentality of the Test batting because as soon as the things get difficult -- it swings around or spins -- they play aggressively.Looking ahead to Englands defence of the Ashes in Australia later this year, Vaughan said the team needed to include an extra specialist batsman at the expense of one of their all-rounders.England are a batter light, he insisted. You have three all-rounders in Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and (wicket-keeper) Jonny Bairstow, so pack the batting.England lost eight Tests last year. They need to pack the batting. They are not good enough or winning enough games to go with that line up.
