Don't look back in Amla says Hashim of Oval return

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africas Hashim Amla has insisted memories of an inspired innings will play no part when he returns to one of his favourite venues for the third Test against England at The Oval.Five years ago at the south London ground, Amla made South Africas highest individual Test score of 311 not out, his marathon effort playing a key role in an innings and 12-run win.South Africa return to The Oval for Thursdays third Test all square at 1-1 in their current four-match series with England after a crushing 340-run win at Trent Bridge earlier this month -- a match where Amla scored important fifties in both innings. The 34-year-old Amla, asked if he was as good a batsman now as he had been five years ago, told reporters at The Oval on Tuesday: Ive got the same name, Ive trained as tough as I can train so for me its about continuing that.As for his more than 13-hour innings in 2012 -- still only the second Test triple century at The Oval after England great Leonard Huttons 364 against Australia in 1938 -- Amla insisted it was the bowlers who deserved credit for the Proteas winning that Test.I remember just trying to bat as long as I can and thankfully I did.The lasting memory was that we were bowling on the first day and I think England was in a good position and the way we came back the next day to bowl them out for 385.That was the turning point in the game. It got us back in the game to win that Test match. The fight we showed, that was the lasting memory. And that means, as far as Amla is concerned, that memories of South Africas highest individual Test score wont be in his thoughts when he bats again at The Oval.I think we passed that five years ago, explained the Durban-born batsman.A lot of cricket has happened in between,I dont think there will be any thoughts of that.I find that with things that happened in the past, generally, if you linger on it too long it becomes more of a distraction than anything else so lets see how this game, every moment is a different opportunity for something to happen.Thursdays match marks the 100th Test staged at The Oval -- where the first Test in England took place in 1880.Having had a spell playing for Oval-based Surrey the season after his triple century heroics, Amla knows the ground well. Its probably in my top three or four best venues, said Amla, himself 105 Test-veteran.I really enjoy it here. Especially when the sun is out and I dont need to have hand-warmers in my pockets.South Africa are set to be an even stronger side than the one that triumphed at Trent Bridge as Thursdays match marks the return of Kagiso Rabada. The fast bowler, one of the rising stars of world cricket, was banned from the second Test as a result of swearing at England all-rounder Ben Stokes during South Africas 211-run defeat in the first Test at Lords.Amla said the 22-year-old Rabadas own desire not to get banned again would be all the encouragement the bowler needed to modify his approach, adding no one in the Proteas camp wanted to douse the pacemans fiery spirit.KG is a wonderful bowler. Hes been outstanding for us in all formats of the game, said Amla of Rabada, who has already taken 77 wickets in 18 Tests at an average of under 25 apiece.Im sure he doesnt want to get banned again. No bowler would want to, no player would want to.The way he does it is entirely up to him. Weve always allowed KG to be KG and enjoy his bowling.Thats how he enjoys it -- by being fiery and having great intensity.

Stokes wants England to right second Test 'wrongs'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ben Stokes has urged England to bounce back from their Trent Bridge thumping by South Africa and show how good they really are when the third Test at The Oval starts on Thursday.England were thrashed by 340 runs with more than a day to spare at the Nottingham ground as South Africa levelled the four-match series in commanding style. The hosts have now had over a week to ponder on that defeat, with all-rounder Stokes insisting there was nothing wrong with Englands attitude. You take good performances and bad performances in your stride and I think its all about how we come back in this Test which will prove how good of a side we are, he told Sky Sports at The Oval on Tuesday.Obviously, it wasnt an ideal performance from us as a team and we know that, the Durham star added. Its good that we managed to get time away and sort of look back on and assess where we went wrong and hopefully we can right the wrongs this week.No-ones ever going to get questioned in that changing room about their fight and desire for wanting to perform for England.A lack of runs cost England dear in Nottingham, with Joe Roots side managing 215 in the first innings before collapsing to 133 all out second time around. But with England having won the series opener at Lords by an emphatic 211 runs, Stokes was confident that South Africa did not now have a huge advantage in terms of momentum. Its 1-1, both games have been pretty one-sided and the team who won swapped around, he said.Weve got two games left so we just need to make sure that we come out here and put in a better performance than we did at Trent Bridge and really take a front foot in the series. The 26-year-old added: I think the biggest question is just being able to adapt better. We obviously didnt quite get to grips with that in that last innings so I think the quicker we can learn to adapt to different situations the better off we will be.Meanwhile Stokes paid tribute to Englands womens team, who won a thrilling World Cup final against India in front of a sold-out Lords on Sunday. Its an amazing achievement for them to win a World Cup in England, he said.It proves just how far the game has come for them. The amount of people that watched, the amount of coverage it gets, added Stokes, with Englands men still to win a major 50-over global tournament.I actually ended up watching a bit of the game as well so it was great to see them go from not looking like they were going to win it to (win). It was amazing to watch and, being an Englishman myself, its always good to see an English team lift the World Cup.

Bangladesh's 'Fizz' on target for Australia, says Walsh

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh pace bowling hope Mustafizur Rahman is on track to return to form when Australia visit next month, fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh said Tuesday. The 21-year-old, known as Fizz, created a sensation with 26 wickets in his first nine one-day internationals. He burst onto the international scene in 2015 with back-to-back five-wicket hauls against India. But surgery on his left shoulder last year forced a lengthy layoff and raised worries about his future after he took just 13 wickets in 18 international since returning. At the Champions Trophy in England this summer, Mustafizur managed only one wicket in four matches even though Bangladesh reached the semi-finals against India.I noticed he was falling away a little bit in England. We have been trying to get him to be more upright and balanced so that he can pull through, Walsh told reporters. We are also trying to get back his pace to where it used to be and get him a little bit closer to the stumps. He knows what needs to be done as well. I have to give him credit because he is eager to get out there and practise. The Caribbean great, who joined the Bangladesh coaching team last September, said he did not want to change Mustafizurs bowling action.I wouldnt say he will have a new bowling action but we are trying to get him more balanced at the crease and get him a bit closer to the stumps, he said.Last couple of days, he has been close to what he used to be. He is heading in the right direction.Australia are scheduled to start a two-Test Bangladesh tour next month and Mustafizur is expected to spearhead the hosts pace attack. However Australias senior players have voted to boycott the tour unless a long-running pay dispute with Cricket Australia is settled.

Kohli tells India to show Sri Lanka who's number one

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Two years ago Virat Kohlis India started a series in Sri Lanka as the team almost anyone could beat, on Wednesday they take to the field in Galle as the team to beat.India may have been nervous last time, but now Kohli says the side has come full circle with no massive areas of concern as they seek to strengthen their hold on number one Test nation status. Two years ago, India had not won a series in seven attempts. They lost the opening Galle Test and it was an electro-shock. They won that series 2-1.India have since been embroiled in near chaos off the field -- the governing body put under Supreme Court administration and a coach forced out by clashes with the captain -- but near domination in competition: 13 Tests played, 10 won, two drawn and just one defeat.Kohli said Tuesday that he wants a definitive end to the drama over the departure of Anil Kumble as coach and a winning start to the new era with Ravi Shastri. We have spoken enough about these issues and it is something that we are not focusing on at all now, the skipper Kohli said.We are just looking forward to the cricket now and in this series to showcase our skills and have consistent performances, which we have had as a side ever since we started our climb back in the rankings.Kohli said Sri Lanka can expect a different start and that India can dominate Tests for years to come. They are expected to defend their top Test ranking in South Africa, England and Australia in the next year. Its pretty different sitting here two years after that particular series, Kohli said of the last Sri Lanka games. Those Tests were very important in us coming together as a team in believing that we can win a series and not just matches. So that was the beginning of that mindset. The captain added: I think we have built a really good base for us as a team to be able to do that consistently over the next few years. We are pretty humble in our preparations and do the hard yards every game that we play.We have all bases covered strongly.India have ruled opening batsman Lokesh Rahul out of the first Test with a viral fever.Kohli said there would be no experiments with the opening lineup, which means Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund should start the batting.I dont think there are any massive areas of concern for us, Kohli said.Weve been looking to fine-tune smaller areas during the course of the game, which probably people might not be able to pick up.Kohli said the onus was on the Indian players to put us into a position where we cant lose.We have been able to put ourselves in a position in games, 80-85 percent of the games, where theres only one winner left.Thats the kind of sustained pressure that weve been able to build.

Musk, Zuckerberg duel over artificial intelligence

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg were trading jabs on social media over artificial intelligence this week in a debate that has turned personal between the two technology luminaries.Musk, the founder of Tesla, SpaceX and other ventures, on Tuesday claimed Zuckerbergs knowledge of artificial intelligence was limited, two days after the Facebook founder described naysayers as irresponsible. The debate underscored the rift in the tech community on whether new technologies capable of creating intelligent machines like robots and self-driving cars would be a blessing or a curse for humanity.Musk has long warned of the potential for machines to get so smart that humans become tantamount to pets, while Zuckerberg has touted the potential for artificial intelligence to improve lives.Facebook is among the Silicon Valleys largest investors in artificial intelligence. While live streaming on the leading social network from his yard on Sunday, Zuckerberg touched on the topic while answering questions from viewers. With AI especially, I am really optimistic, Zuckerberg said. And I think people who are naysayers and try to drum up these doomsday scenarios -- I just, I dont understand it. Its really negative and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible. When asked about Zuckerbergs comment early Tuesday during an exchange on Twitter, Musk wrote that he has discussed the topic with Zuckerberg and that his understanding of the subject is limited.Musk more than a year ago took part in creating a nonprofit research company devoted to developing artificial intelligence that will help people and not hurt them.- People pets -If we create some digital super-intelligence that exceeds us in every way by a lot, it is very important that it be benign, Musk said a while back at a conference in California. He reasoned that even a benign situation with ultra-intelligent AI would put people so far beneath the machine they would be like a house cat.I dont love the idea of being a house cat, Musk said, envisioning the creation of neural lacing that magnifies peoples brain power by linking them directly to computing capabilities. At a gathering of US governors this month, Musk contended that artificial intelligence is a terrifying problem and a threat to human civilization. He argued for the technology to be regulated sooner rather than later for risk of safeguards being put in place too late.Smart machines could start wars or kill people in streets, Musk has warned.Musk is also behind a startup devoted to neural lace that would enable brains to interface directly with computers.Such a Neuralink would have the potential to level the playing field a bit by enabling people to directly access processing power and perhaps even download memories for storage.Zuckerberg last year created his own personal butler imbued with artificial intelligence, named Jarvis, which plays with his family.
