Root wants England to make start 'count'

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - England captain Joe Root is determined his side dont let up when the second Test against South Africa starts at Nottinghams Trent Bridge on Friday.Roots first match since succeeding Alastair Cook as England skipper was a personal triumph, with the 26-year-old Yorkshireman scoring a first-innings 190 in a 211-run win in the series opener at Lords last week as the hosts went 1-0 up with more than a day to spare.England, however, lost eight Tests last year and Root is wary of letting complacency creep in.We definitely want to make sure we make this start count, Root told reporters at Trent Bridge on Thursday, with England looking to go an unassailable 2-0 up in this four-match series. Its important we set the tone with whatever we do tomorrow morning and drive that forward throughout the rest of the game.Root confirmed England would field an unchanged team after off-spinner Moeen Ali, who took 10 wickets on a turning pitch at Lords, and slow left-armer Liam Dawson helped ease the workload on his seamers. Were going to go in with the same team, Root said. It gives us great balance if spin does come into it later in the game, weve got plenty of options. Our seamers, it might be that they play a bigger part this week, but that quite excites me. They only bowled a handful of overs in the second innings last week.It means theyre nice and fresh, and when they get their opportunity theyll still be pretty fresh coming into the second innings later in this game. One of those pacemen, James Anderson, did not bowl much during Thursdays nets session, but Root insisted Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker was fully fit after struggling with groin and shoulder problems recently. He had a little bowl today, Root added. Jimmy knows his body, hes obviously had a couple of injury issues over the course of this year and I think hes just been smart with the way that he practises.Hes a senior player, he knows what hes doing. Hes done it for such a long time now.Its really important that hes smart in how he looks after his body and I think how hes gone about it this week is when he has bowled hes made sure that hes been right on it and hes got something out of it, but at the same time hes got plenty in the tank for when we start on Friday. This match will be Englands first Test at Trent Bridge since their stunning Ashes-clinching success two years ago, when Stuart Broad took a remarkable eight for 15 on his Nottinghamshire home ground as Australia were bowled out for just 60 on the first morning.I think Stuarts excited to get another opportunity to bowl here on his home ground, said Root. Weve played some good cricket here over the last four or five years and we want to make sure that continues this week. This week also saw Englands women qualify for the semi-finals of their World Cup.Its brilliant for the game, said Root.To get to the semi-finals is a great achievement and to do it under the pressure of hosting the tournament is great. I wish them all the luck. The England women went into the last four on the back of a 75-run win over New Zealand at Derby on Wednesday that saw Natalie Sciver twice deliberately hit the ball between her legs during the course of a brilliant 129.Asked about the Natmeg, as the shot has become known, Root -- one of the leading batsmen in the mens game -- said: Im not sure Ive quite got that in my locker. Its a great bit of skill to be able to play that and I think Jonny Bairstow has played it a few times but not quite as good as that.

Du Plessis wants Proteas to pass character test

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has urged the Proteas to pass a huge test of character when they face England again at Trent Bridge.Du Plessis did not play in Englands crushing 211-run win in the first of a four-Test series at Lords last week following the birth of his first child. But he was on hand to see South Africa lose 10 wickets in under two sessions as they slumped to 119 all out in their second innings with more than a day to spare.I had the baby with one arm and watched the cricket with one eye, du Plessis told reporters at Trent Bridge on Thursday -- his 33rd birthday and the day before the second Test starts on Friday.I saw a lot interesting things from the side which is probably a bit of outside perspective, you dont always get that, he added as he took back the reins from stand-in skipper Dean Elgar.Im really excited to be back with the team. It was tough going for us, the previous one, we werent as good as we would like to have been but in cricket you get another go and were looking forward to this next Test.South Africa have a proud away Test record. In their past 19 series spanning some 10 years on the road, theyve won 13, drawn five and lost just one -- in India in 2015/16.But they did not help themselves at Lords by twice taking wickets with no-balls and missing several chances to dismiss Joe Root before he marked his first innings as England captain with a brilliant 190.Its basics for me, theres no point looking too much further as you can over-analyse, said du Plessis.South Africa did manage to reduce England to 76 for four on the first morning at Lords before the hosts fought back, aided by some slack Proteas fielding. There were times that England found themselves under pressure -- the disappointing thing was just how quickly they got out of it, said du Plessis.Eighty for four could have quickly been a different story but we didnt take our chances. Catches go down but its how you respond to them and we didnt do that well enough. When they threw a punch back at us we just sat back and let it happen, expecting something to change and it never did and that is where we let the game slip.South Africas task this match has been made harder by the fact that pace bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out after being hit with a one-match ban as a result of swearing at Englands Ben Stokes at Lords, while Proteas coach Russell Domingo is back home following the death of his mother from injuries suffered in a recent car accident.KG (Rabada) is an unforeseen circumstance, so you cant plan for that, senior batsman du Plessis said. The stuff off the field you cant plan for (either) -- I didnt expect the baby to come earlier, the tragedy in Russells family etc -- its a huge character test for us.What was missing in the first Test was that we didnt do that (show enough character). While acknowledging Trent Bridges reputation as a swing-friendly ground, du Plessis said it was important his side played what was in front of them at Nottinghamshires headquarters. We know the ball is conducive to the swing and seam bowlers but we have a quality attack, he insisted.Ive never been a guy to get too focussed on past results. Its about getting out there, seeing what the pitch offers and how you react.

Chandimal's Sri Lanka face buoyant Zimbabwe

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka are looking to usher in Dinesh Chandimals era as skipper by bouncing back from a humiliating ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe with victory in the Test starting Friday.Chandimal will lead the islanders in a Test for the first time after Angelo Mathews resigned Wednesday following Sri Lankas shock 3-2 series loss to the cricketing minnows. The 27-year-old Chandimal has long been earmarked for the captaincy and Sri Lankas cricket board hope his elevation will spark an upturn in fortunes for the demoralised side.I am passionate about leading the side and I want to take this team forward and improve our rankings, Chandimal told reporters on ahead of Fridays one-off Test at Colombos Premadasa Stadium. We had a lot of ups and downs in the past year. But we have good young and older players, added the right-handed batsman, a former captain of Sri Lankas T20 and ODI teams.Sri Lanka, ranked seventh in Test cricket, hope victory can be the start of rebuilding their reputation. Their loss to Zimbabwe followed a fitness and coaching crisis and an early departure from the Champions Trophy.Left hander Danushka Gunathilaka, who did well in the ODI series, is expected to make his Test debut by opening the batting with the experienced Dimuth Karunaratne.Fast bowler Vishwa Fernando is also in the squad while Rangana Herath, who has picked up 373 Test wickets, and Dilruwan Perera will lead their spin attack after not featuring in the ODIs.A fired-up Zimbabwe will be hoping to maintain their momentum with Hamilton Masakadza, who was named Player of the Series in the ODI tournament, likely to be the main source of their runs. But beating Sri Lanka in a Test match poses a far greater challenge than the ODI series for the inexperienced Zimbabweans.Masakadza, with 32 Test caps, is their only player to feature in more than 20 Test matches. And they will be aware that at the same ground 20 years ago Sri Lanka posted a world Test record score of 952 for 6 against India. This tour has been very special for us. Now we must do well in the Test match to finish off the tour on a high note, said Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer who will be able to call upon promising leg-spinner Natsai Mshangwe.Squads:Sri Lanka (from): Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Dimuth Karunaratne, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara.Zimbabwe (from): Graeme Cremer (captain), Ryan Burl, Regis Chakabva, Tendai Chatara, Craig Ervine, Hamilton Masakadza, Peter Moor, Chris Mpofu, Carl Mumba, Tarisai Musakanda, Natsai Mshangwe, Sikandar Raza, Donald Tiripano, Malcolm Waller, Nathan Waller, Sean Williams.Umpires: Ian Gould (ENG) and Nigel Llong (ENG).Third Umpire: Chettithody Shamshuddin (IND).Match Referee: Chris Broad (ENG).

Neil Armstrong moon bag on sale for up to $4 million

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Once nearly thrown out with the trash, a bag that Neil Armstrong used to collect the first ever samples of the moon goes on sale in New York next week, valued at $2-4 million.Traces of moon dust and small rock are embedded in what is the only artifact from the Apollo 11 mission in private hands, says Sothebys, who is organizing the sale on July 20, the 48th anniversary of the first moon landing in 1969.Its a tremendously rare thing, says Cassandra Hatton, vice president and senior specialist in charge of the sale. Something that was used by the first man, on the first mission to collect the first samples, its remarkable.Source: ReutersArmstrong collected dust and rock fragments from five different locations on the lunar surface. Given its then unknown nature, the decontamination bag was used to minimize any potential harm the samples might pose. After Apollo 11 returned to Earth, nearly all the equipment from the mission was sent to the Smithsonian, the worlds largest museum. An inventory error however left the sample bag languishing in a box at the Johnson Space Center.Staff were about to throw it out before offering it to a collector who ran a space museum in Kansas, and kept it unaware of its provenance. When the collector was later convicted of theft, fraud and money laundering, the FBI seized the box from his garage to auction it off for restitution along with other assets.- Dark smudges -The bag was offered four times for sale, before an Illinois lawyer finally snapped it up in 2015 for a winning bid of $995.Noticing dark smudges inside, she sent it to NASA for testing, which confirmed in 2016 it was indeed moon dust from the Apollo 11 landing site, and that it was the decontamination bag listed in the Apollo 11 stowage list.A legal battle ensued over ownership, which ended in a federal judge ordering NASA to return the bag to the lawyer -- who is now offering it for sale. The ruling makes it the only Apollo 11 artifact allowed in private hands.Source: APHatton described holding it as one of those moments where your hearts racing and your hands are shaking. Its the closest Ill ever come to shaking hands with Neil Armstrong or being able to walk on the moon. The bag, made of the same fire-retardant material as space suits and with a tear underneath, is the star lot in a space exploration sale.Another highlight is the Apollo 13 flight plan, valued at $30-40,000, which records actions taken by the crew, including after the explosion that led to the famed Houston, weve had a problem call.Apollo 13 was supposed to be the third US moon landing attempt. But an oxygen tank exploded two days after its April 1970 launch, badly damaging the spacecraft some 200,000 miles from Earth.
