Derbyshire house entrance remains blocked by bus stop

Posted:

(Web Desk) – A house in Langley Mill town of Derbyshire has been suffering from an unusual problem. The main entrance of the house is blocked by a bus shelter which is right in front of it.According to media reports, it’s the best house if one uses public transport and the buyer will not have any excuse to miss the bus. The bus stop is so close to the house that bus passengers within can peak into the two rooms. The only way to reach the house exitThe house owner is currently using the bushes on either side of the main pathway to get across the road. The Station Road property luckily has a backdoor which can also be put into regular use.The two-bedroom property can be purchased for £140,000. One of the best things about the house location is that it can connect passengers to the main bus route. A nearby resident Julie Newing told, “It’s hysterical because anyone living in that house wouldn’t even be able to catch a bus because the shelter blocks their path.”The pictures of the house went viral when she shared them on social media. The real estate company which is managing the house said the bus stop is in process of being moved.Originally published in Metro.co.uk

Britain dismisses attempts to lure high finance to Paris

LONDON (AFP) - Britains government dismissed on Friday Frances attempt to lure high finance to Paris to cash in on Brexit, saying it would ensure that London remained the global financial hub.Paris is competing against rival financial centres in Europe for jobs that could move out of London due to Britains exit from the European Union.London is the leading global financial hub, with the largest market share for financial services in the world, a government spokeswoman told AFP.We are determined to maintain the Citys competitiveness now and in the future, she said. We want financial services to continue to thrive here and we stand ready to help the industry maximise the opportunities ahead.French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Friday laid out a raft of measures aimed at boosting Pariss attractiveness.Among the measures unveiled by Philippe are scrapping a plan to widen a current 0.3 percent tax on financial transactions, eliminating the top income tax bracket, and keeping bonuses out of the calculation of severance pay for risk-takers such as stockbrokers.

Italian nurse suspected over patient deaths acquitted on appeal

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - A 45-year-old Italian nurse jailed for life for murdering a patient and widely suspected over the deaths of many others at the time has been acquitted on appeal, Italian media reported Saturday.Daniela Poggiali was arrested in October 2014 in Lugo, northern Italy, and sentenced to life behind bars in March last year. A court acquitted her on Friday.Publication in the media of pictures of her smiling next to recently deceased patients had caused uproar in Italy, amid reports that she had given huge doses of drugs to sick patients she found annoying. At the emergency room where she worked she was always engaging and tireless with patients families, but seems cold and unpleasant with colleagues. And in the first three months of 2014, 38 of the 83 deaths registered in her department occurred when she was on duty, against an average of no more than 10 for her fellow nurses. At the start of April a series of troubling coincidences alerted the authorities. And when a 78-year-old woman died shortly after being taken care of by the nurse, an investigation was launched. The autopsy showed that she had been given a massive dose of potassium chloride. Prosecutors said it could not have been a mistake, and Poggiali was the only person who could have given the injection.Potassium chloride is detectable in the body only for a few days after death, therefore the other suspicious cases raised by prosecutors -- around 10 over a period of a few months -- could not be added to the official file. But an expert called by Poggialis lawyers during the trial over the death she was convicted of found that, if the injection had occurred as claimed, the patient would have died in a matter of minutes, and not over an hour as was the case. The facts do not stand up, the Bologne appeal court ruled Friday. The former nurse was released Friday evening, after nearly three years behind bars. They described me as someone who I am not, and now I am going to be able to get my life back again, she told reporters.

Tables have turned, state ministers targeted institutions: Fawad Ch

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry responded to PML-N dismissing report of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) without Qatari Prince testimony on Saturday saying the tables have turned and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) state minister have now targeted the institutions.“I had warned the PML-N leaders not to eat sweets until they read the Supreme Court Panama verdict in Urdu,” he stated. Fawad Ch argued that Qatari Prince was their witness and it should have been their duty to present him before JIT.He said, “Either Qatari Prince detached himself from the letter or JIT gathered sufficient evidence to disapprove it”. He claimed that it is possible the Sharif family told Qatari Prince to refuse from coming to Pakistan so that they can escape. PTI spokesperson maintained that the Sharif family appeared before JIT till the very end, however, dismissed it at the last moment. He said it didn’t matter if anyone dismisses the JIT report, which is due on July 10. “Accountability process will not stop … The constitution and state were important, not any person,” he stated. While talking about the case, he stressed that the country was under risk over accountability of one family, adding that state ministers were going to drown with the PM.Similarly, Naeem-ul-Haque said the testimony of Qatari Prince is meaningless now. “JIT report has been compiled and now the members have evidence,” he told.

Cook punishes depleted South Africa in first Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Alastair Cooks unbeaten fifty strengthened Englands grip on the first Test at Lords after South Africa had to toil in the field without Vernon Philander on Saturday.England were 119 for one in their second innings at stumps on the third day, a lead of 216 runs in this opening match of a four-Test series.Former captain Cook was 59 not out, after more than three hours of typically painstaking effort, with fellow left-hander Gary Ballance unbeaten on 22.Experienced paceman Philander did not bowl a single one of the 51 overs the Proteas sent down Saturday, after going for an X-ray on a hand injury suffered when he was hit by James Anderson while making 52 in South Africas first innings 361 earlier in the day.It was a worrying absence for the Proteas given they are already without Kagiso Rabada, another member of their pace attack, for next weeks second Test at Trent Bridge after he was banned for verbally abusing England all-rounder Ben Stokes on Thursdays first day at Lords.South Africa, with Dean Elgar leading the side for the first time in the absence of Faf du Plessis on paternity leave, wasted their two reviews in the first 80 overs on Cook. Both times they challenged what seemed, even with the naked eye, sound not out decisions by umpires Paul Reiffel and S Ravi in response to lbw appeals. But Cook was still on his tea score of 31 when partly unsighted wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock missed a stumping chance off left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.Keaton Jennings, born in South Africa but England qualified through his mother and residence, helped Cook put on 80 for the first wicket. But he fell for 33 when, trying to cut a Morne Morkel ball that was too close to him, he was caught behind by de Kock -- who played in the same XI as Jennings when they were both pupils at Johannesburgs King Edward VII school.Jenningss exit brought in Ballance, under pressure in what was now his third chance at Test cricket and out for just 20 in the first innings.Cooks three on another sun-drenched day at Lords saw him to a 127-ball fifty including eight fours of which a cover-drive off Maharaj was the pick.- Dashing De Kock -===================South Africa resumed on 214 for five -- still 244 runs behind Englands first innings 458 which featured Joe Roots 190 in his first Test as England captain as well as fifties from Moeen Ali (87), Stuart Broad (57 not out) and Stokes (56).Temba Bavuma was 48 not out and nightwatchman Rabada unbeaten on nine. Both Rabada (27) and Bavuma (59) fell to spinners Liam Dawson and Ali respectively. But after Root took the new ball, de Kock twice struck fast-medium bowler Broad for three successive fours -- the best a whipped drive through mid-on from a ball pitching outside off stump. It was a typically dashing display by the left-hander, who completed the second-fastest Test fifty at Lords in a mere 36 balls, including 10 boundaries. But his next ball proved his last, de Kock slicing James Anderson to square cover where Stokes took an excellent low catch.Philander made a fine fifty of his own before he was last man out slogging at off-spinner Ali, who finished with fine figures of four for 59 in 20 overs after he completed both halves of the Test double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets on Thursday.

Stormy G20 ends with opt-outs for Trump on climate, trade

PML-N rejects Panama JIT report without Qatari Prince testimony

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders held a heated press conference on Saturday where they announced to dismiss the report of Joint Investigation Committee (JIT) for Panama case ,which is due on July 10,if the Qatari Prince testimony remained excluded. It was stated that the JIT report would be clearly one-sided if the testimony of Qatari Prince Hamad Bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani is not included. The ruling party has expressed its objections over the representatives of intelligence agencies. They complained that the FIA representative was to head JIT, but the newspaper report tells otherwise.PML-N leaders based the report in Daily Jang which claims that the JIT is controlled by intelligence agencies, adding that no clarification or rejection was issued over the report. “We cannot any justice in current circumstances,” they stated. In the final communication between JIT and Qatari Prince, the latter had refused to visit Pakistan and asked the JIT members to interrogate him within his Palace in Doha.Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Marriyum Aurangzeb had already hinted this decision on Friday when she said the JIT report would remain incomplete without the statement of Qatari Prince.‘PM could have taken immunity’Abbasi argued that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could have taken immunity, but he choose not to, adding that he presented himself for fair accountability by offering full cooperation with the JIT. “Doubts came into being only after the formation of JIT,” he added. He highlighted the ‘controversial’ nature of JIT members while claiming that the there was no evidence of corruption against the premier.Objection on intelligence agencies‘presence’in JITOn his turn during the media talk in Islamabad, Saad Rafique complained that courts didn’t take any notice when political opponents used the remarks of honourable judges against PML-N. He claimed the ruling party has the most public support. Rafique said the party had concerns over‘presence’of intelligence agencies in JIT activities. He highlighted the‘controversial’members within Panama JIT and questioned its neutrality. He demanded respect for the government with public mandate, complaining who gave JIT the permission of tapping phones. “We cannot sense any justice prevailing in current scenario,” he made it clear. He shed light on the deviation of case from the petition.‘Stock market crashed over PM’s summon’Ahsan Iqbal said the stock market lost record points when PM Nawaz was summoned by the JIT. He told political opponents that the only way to gain power is through public votes rather than conspiring against ruling authority.“10MW electricity will be added to national grid by 2018,” he assured while challenging the opponents to even find corruption worth $1 in the PML-N rule. He maintained that the party will not approve JIT report without the testimony of Qatari Prince, and that the questions of JIT during interrogation were irrelevant to petition.‘Make JIT interrogations public without editing’Khawaja Asif demanded the authorities to make all videos and audios of activities of JIT public without editing. “People should know the kind of questions asked from the Sharif family,” he stated. Asif joked about PTI Chairman Imran Khan receiving money from his married wife, asking how such miracles happen. He accused Imran Khan of using Zakat for business. Asif highlighted Nawaz Sharif’s role in restoring the judges, adding that the world was conspiring to stop the nuclear power from becoming economic power. On a question, he said the armed forces and Supreme Court had defined roles in the constitution.VIDEO: Full press conference of PML-N leaders (July 8, 2017)

Ervine blitz helps Zimbabwe draw level in ODI series

HAMBANTOTA (AFP) - Batsman Craig Ervine hit a quickfire 69 to help Zimbabwe pull off a four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the rain-shortened fourth one-day international and level the five-match series at 2-2 in Hambantota on Saturday.Chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised target of 219 in 31 overs, Zimbabwe rode on Ervines 55-ball unbeaten knock to win with 10 balls to spare at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium.Earlier, openers Niroshan Dickwella (116) and Danushka Gunathilaka (87) put together 209 runs in Sri Lankas 300-6 -- becoming the first pair in ODI history to score back-to-back double century partnerships. The left-handed batting duo had put on a 229-run match-winning stand in the previous ODI on Thursday at the same venue but their efforts went in vain the second time around.Solomon Mire (43) and Hamilton Masakadza (28) set up the Zimbabwe chase before teenage leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who took three wickets, got the openers trudging back to the pavilion. But Ervine and Malcolm Waller (20) made sure the chase remained on track with their 43-run sixth-wicket partnership after rain interrupted play for over one-and-a-half-hours.We knew we were ahead (of the rate) and we were always in the game and the way we batted was excellent, Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer said in the post-match presentation. We have seen we can chase down a score and set a score and our batting has come right, Cremer said on the prospect of his side eyeing a major series win in over eight years.Ervine, a left-handed batsman and a right-arm spinner, smashed eight fours and a six to get the man of the match award.- Turning point -===================For the hosts, Dickwella hit his second successive century with a commanding knock, while Gunathilaka was bowled 13 short of what could have been his second ODI ton.Wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella, who scored 102 in the third ODI, played a patient 118-ball knock laced with eight boundaries before being trapped lbw.Zimbabwe off-spinner Waller got the two prized wickets in successive overs to pull things back for the visitors.Paceman Chris Mpofu also got two wickets to rattle the Sri Lankan middle-order as the hosts slipped from 216-1 to 263-5.The turning point was when we pulled it back in the last ten overs. Sri Lanka looked like getting 340-350, so the way the bowlers pulled it back was excellent, said Cremer.Meanwhile Cremer was docked 20 per cent of his match fee for his teams slow over rate while the rest of the side was slapped with a 10 percent penalty.Zimbabwe were found to be one over short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration by the International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Chris Broad.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, who lifted his sides total with his 40-ball 42, said that even though he felt 300 was enough, the batsmens shot selection was not up to the mark. The fifth and deciding ODI is scheduled on Monday at the same venue. The two sides will also play a one-off Test starting July 14.

Clashes as IOK marks key anniversary
