ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The three-member bench of the Supreme Court will resume hearing to the Panama Papers case today (Tuesday) following the submission of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report.Lawyer Khawaja Harris, representing the prime minister before the apex bench, will resume his arguments over the JIT report today.Earlier on Monday, the three-member apex bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal, and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, took up the case after nearly two months. The bench heard arguments from lawyers of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and Sheikh Rashid. Presenting the arguments in Supreme Court (SC) over Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer Naeem Bokhari said that the team had found contradiction in the statements of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz and his cousin Tariq Shafi regarding Gulf Steel Mills issue.Bokhari said that JIT was tasked to search answers of thirteen questions among which five were only related to Gulf Steel Mills. The investigation committee had termed Tariq Shafi’s statement as fake, he continued.PTI lawyer argued that the team had also declared giving 12 million dirham to the Qatari family as story whereas it also found the agreement of selling Gulf Steel Mills’ shares as self-made.Justice Azmat asked Bokhari about the source of Free Zone Establishment company’s (FZE) documents over which he said that they were received by legal assistance. He said the company had also issued Nawaz Sharif’s iqama.Justice Ijaz-ul-Hassan said that the duration of PM’s iqama expired in 2015 over which Naeem Bokhari said that Hassan claimed the company was demolished in 2014.He said that Sharif brothers failed to provide Jeddah Mills documents and Hill Metal audit report to the JIT. He said that record of legal assistance from United Arab Emirates is present in report’s volume 10.Will also made volume 10 public if needed, said Justice Ejaz Afzal.Justice Ijaz said that the documents on which JIT relied for Hill Metal report were not verified.Meanwhile, the bench expressed resentment over ruckus in the court from the lawyers. On the other hand, PM has also submitted reservations over JIT report in SC while Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar has also challenged it, saying they have been directed to file their reservations in court’s registrar office.

Du Plessis's joy as South Africa go back to basics

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said his side had gone back to basics in a commanding 340-run win over England in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Monday.Victory saw the Proteas bounce back in style after they suffered a 211-run defeat in the first of a four-match series at Lords -- a fixture du Plessis missed following the birth of his first child. We did the basics a lot better and put England under pressure for long periods, du Plessis told Sky Sports. We focused on getting back to things this side does really well, he added of a South Africa side with a proud away record of just one series loss in their 19 previous Test campaigns on the road.Du Plessis took the bold decision to bat first after winning the toss at Trent Bridge, a ground known for aiding swing bowlers, and was rewarded with a competitive total of 335 all out. With South Africa coach Russell Domingo missing this match following the death of his mother and the attack without fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, banned for one game as a result of swearing at Englands Ben Stokes at Lords, the Proteas then dismissed England for 205.Du Plessiss painstaking 63, demonstrating an ability to graft for runs quite beyond most England batsmen this match, helped South Africa to a second innings total of 343 for nine declared. That left England needing a mammoth 474 for victory -- the most made by any side to win in the fourth innings of a Test is the West Indies 418 for seven against Australia at St Johns in 2003.England, however, collapsed to 133 all out with more than a day to spare on a pitch, which while worn was no minefield and with sunny blue skies providing some of the best batting conditions of the Test.Vernon Philander, the man-of-the-match, led South Africas attack with three wickets for 24 runs in 10 overs of accurate fast-medium bowling.South Africa had collapsed to 119 all out at Lords but they were on top at Trent Bridge almost from the start and never let up.There were periods in the first Test when we played well but then let England dominate us, said du Plessis. This was an important Test for us.The Proteas now have a nine-day break until the start of the third Test at The Oval on July 27, with no tour match in between. But with several of South Africas multi-format players in England since May, du Plessis reckoned a break may be no bad thing.A few of the guys have had a long tour -- Ive just had a break so I feel mentally refreshed and strong, but I feel a couple of days off will give the guys a chance to relax and get away and in a weeks time come back with the same intensity, he said. For England this reverse again raised questions about their fallible top three, a problem for them while they lost eight Tests last year.Keaton Jennings and current number three Gary Ballance, a longstanding team-mate of Root at Yorkshire, have made just 44 and 85 runs respectively in four innings during the series so far.No, I dont think it (the top three) is a concern, insisted number four Root. They just need some runs and to spend some time out in the middle.Credit has to go to South Africa, who played very well over the course of the game, but weve got to make sure this doesnt happen again, he added.Meanwhile England coach Trevor Bayliss was adamant none of the side were trying to hide from the scale of this defeat. The boys are fairly honest in the changing room and realise they have had a shocker, the Australian said.

Hussain slams 'abysmal' England selection

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Former England captain Nasser Hussain delivered a withering indictment on the abysmal selection behind the current side following their colossal 340-run defeat by South Africa in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Monday.Hussain said too many recent call-ups had failed to deliver the goods at international level. That failure reflected poorly on a selection panel made up of chairman James Whitaker, who played one Test as a batsman for England in 1986, former Test seamer Angus Fraser, now the director of cricket at county champions Middlesex and Mick Newell, who holds a similar position at Trent Bridge-based Nottinghamshire, a Second Division county. The trio also receive input from Englands Australian coach Trevor Bayliss and the captain, in this case Test skipper Joe Root.Mondays reverse, which saw South Africa level the four-match series at 1-1 with more than a day to spare in Nottingham, again raised questions about Englands fallible top order.Former captain Alastair Cook is now onto his 11th opening partner in Tests in Keaton Jennings since the retirement of Ashes-winning skipper Andrew Strauss, now Englands director of cricket, in 2012.Meanwhile several batsmen have had a go in a top order where number four Root is the other mainstay.Jennings and Gary Ballance, recalled for a third crack at Test cricket this series, were both twice out cheaply at Trent Bridge but Hussain said they were just two examples of poor selection in recent years. The lads who are coming in arent doing anything, Hussain told Sky Sports. They won (the first Test at Lords because of Joe Root...the ones theyve won before have been because of Root, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad in Johannesburg. The selectors are going to have to have a good long look at themselves because their record in the last two years -- two years ago it was one-day cricket, now in Test match cricket -- their selections have been abysmal.Name some lads whove come in: (James) Vince, (Ben) Duckett, (Gareth) Batty, (Zafar) Ansari...I can name a long list but no-ones coming in and doing well. Ballance, Alex Hales.Ballance has been in prolific form for Yorkshire this season but Hussain insisted: Selection is not just about saying Gary Ballance has 1,000 first-class runs so Gary Ballance plays.Speak to umpires, speak to bowlers, has he actually changed? He hasnt changed a thing and were getting exactly what we got the last two times.Hell go back to county cricket and score runs again but that doesnt mean hes an international cricketer.Meanwhile England great Geoffrey Boycott, one of the outstanding defensive opening batsmen of his generation, was deeply unimpressed by the lack of application during Mondays collapse to 133 all out. They need better batsmen and a better attitude, Boycott, himself a former England captain told BBC Radios Test Match Special.Only Alastair Cook made any effort to play in the sort of the way that the situation demanded. The rest of them have a flamboyant way of playing. Play shots, whack it, hit it, get fours. Everybody keeps saying this brave new England side, attacking England side, we like to play positive and they have all got sucked into this feeling. They believe it now. If you believe that, then what you are going to get are wonderful successes, like at Lords (where England won the first Test by 211 runs), and these horrible losses. There is no middle ground.

Mendis stays firm in record Sri Lanka chase

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Kusal Mendis scored a fluent half-century to keep Sri Lankas hopes of chasing a record 388 alive on day four of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe on Monday. The hosts were 170 for three at stumps, with Mendis (60) batting alongside Angelo Mathews (17) at Colombos R. Premadasa Stadium.Sri Lankas highest-ever successful run chase was against South Africa in 2006, when they achieved their 352-run target in Colombo.Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer dented the hosts with his leg-spin, claiming the important wickets of Upul Tharanga (27) and his opposite number Dinesh Chandimal (15).Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was bowled by left-arm spinner Sean Williams for 49 as the visitors persisted with an all-spin attack in the 48 overs bowled in the innings so far.Karunaratne said Cremer -- who bagged his maiden five-wicket Test haul in Sri Lankas first innings -- would pose the biggest threat on a fifth-day track. We have got to watch out for Cremer. He is creating the most trouble. There is lot of assistance for the wrist spinner, Karunaratne told reporters. We have already got 170 runs on the board... once the ball gets softer, it gets easier. If these two guys are able to hang in there for one and a half hours we will get into an interesting position.Mendis, who fought off hamstring trouble in the final session of play, put together an unbeaten 37-run stand with Mathews to take the delicately poised Test into its final day.Zimbabwe were earlier bowled out for 377 in the second session, with Sikandar Raza (127) top-scoring for the visitors with his maiden Test century.Cremer was the last man out for 48 off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who returned figures of 6-133 to take his match tally to 11 wickets. The Pakistan-born Raza steered the teams middle and lower order to help his side accumulate another 318 runs after being reduced to 59-5 on day three.Razas 144-run partnership with Malcolm Waller (68) was the highlight of the Zimbabwe innings after the pair resumed on the overnight score of 252-6.Feels great to get my maiden Test hundred, said all-rounder Raza, who also opened Zimbabwes bowling with his off-spin.All the batters put up a tremendous show. Brilliant effort by all the guys to get us into this position. The result of this game now can go our way.Zimbabwe are seeking their first-ever Test win against Sri Lanka, who are looking for redemption under new Test captain Chandimal. He took over from Mathews, who resigned after calling the one-day series loss a hard pill to swallow.

Syrian army sweeps across IS-held territory: state media

DAMASCUS (AFP) - Syrian government forces have swept across territory south of Islamic State group stronghold Raqa, capturing a string of villages and oilfields from the jihadists, state media said on Monday. The landscape south of Raqa city strategically borders several provinces: Aleppo to the west, Homs to the south and Deir Ezzor -- much of which is still held by IS -- to the east.On Monday, state news agency SANA said government loyalists had scored significant gains against IS in the area.Over the past two days, army units recaptured a number of villages and oilfields in western parts of Deir Ezzor province and southern parts of Raqa, the agency said.It said dozens of IS vehicles had been destroyed and that a number of jihadists, including foreigners, had been killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday the government advance was backed by heavy Syrian and Russian air strikes.Regime forces have captured between 1,500 and 1,800 square kilometres in Raqa province over the past 48 hours, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.He said troops were approaching the strategic region of Jabal al-Bishri, a mountain chain straddling parts of Raqa, Deir Ezzor and Homs provinces. If the regime captures it, it can take control of all those areas, Abdel Rahman said.Since 2014, Raqa city has served as the de facto capital of IS territory in Syria, and US-backed fighters are currently battling jihadists inside the city. But rival Syrian government troops have also chipped away at IS-held territory in the broader province.Last month, regime forces targeted the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces alliance west of Raqa. The Pentagon downed a Syrian jet in retaliation.More than 330,000 people have been killed since Syrias conflict erupted in March 2011 with anti-government protests.
