German jihadi 16-year-old girl arrested in Iraq: Berlin

BERLIN (AFP) - A German 16-year-old girl suspected of joining the Islamic State jihadists in Iraq was arrested last week in Mosul, a German judicial source said Saturday. The Dresden prosecutor confirms that Linda W. was identified in Iraq, where she is receiving German consular assistance, said the prosecutors office in Dresden, near the teens eastern hometown of Pulsnitz.German media earlier reported Iraqi soldiers had captured the teenager last week along with several other suspected IS brides in a tunnel where they had taken refuge and where weapons and explosives belts had also been uncovered.Linda W. disappeared last year after apparently making contact with IS members via internet messaging and reportedly converting to Islam.German weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday Linda W. had been detained in Baghdad with three other German women and that they had been questioned following the liberation of Mosul from IS control which Iraq reported on July 10.Spiegel said the Iraqi authorities handed the German embassy a list of names of German women in the area at the start of the week and added consular officials had since visited four of them at a prison at Baghdad airport. The magazine said one of the four was of Moroccan origin and that another was believed to be of Chechen origin but had a German passport.

70 villagers kidnapped in Afghanistan, at least 7 killed

KANDAHAR (AFP) - Seventy Afghans were abducted Friday from their village along the main highway in the south of the country, and at least seven were killed, police said, accusing the Taliban of the kidnappings.Around 30 villagers have been released but at least 30 others are still missing, Abdul Raziq, the head of Kandahar provincial police told AFP.The Taliban abducted 70 people from their house in a village along the Kandahar-Tarinkot highway, Friday. They killed seven of them today, Raziq said. Their bodies were found by villagers this morning. They released 30 and are still keeping around 30 others, he said, adding they were civilian Pashtuns, the ethnicity of many Taliban fighters. The highway runs from Kandahar, the largest city in southern Afghanistan, to Tarinkot, capital of Uruzgan province, a poppy-growing area where the Taliban have a heavy presence. It is not clear why the villagers were targeted. Government officials and security forces are usually the target of such incidents. It is unusual for the Taliban to go into villages to take civilians as hostages. In general they intercept vehicles on the road, checking to see if passengers have links to the government. The incident was confirmed by officials at the Independent Human Rights Commission in Kandahar and Kabul in a statement condemning the kidnappings and executions.

However, both Wasim and Waqar contributed with an unbeaten 41-run stand to cling the victory.Wasim Akram, who came at number 7, scored a terrific 45 while remaining aggressive throughout the innings. On the other end, Waqar gave full support with 20 runs to his name. Pakistan defeated English with two wickets to spare.English bowlers were completely annoyed with how the two survived their attack. Swiss couple laid to rest 75 years after disappearance on glacier

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - The remains of a couple, found on a receding glacier in the Swiss Alps 75 years after they had disappeared, were at long last buried on Saturday near their native village.Their two surviving daughters were present at the funeral service in the church at Saviese in Valais canton, a few kilometres from Chandolin where Marcelin Dumoulin and his wife Francine were living when they disappeared on August 15, 1942.The funeral was held in the church where the couple had attended mass on the August 15 feast day before setting out on their trek, a priest Jean Varone told the ATS press agency.Dumoulin, then 40, and his 37-year-old wife had left their home that morning hoping to check on their cattle, which were being kept in an alpine pasture in neighbouring Bern canton. The fastest route at the time was via a glacier footpath. The sky was clear when the couple set out, but clouds later worsened visibility and the couple vanished, likely after falling into a crevasse, orphaning five sons and two daughters.I saw them leave that Saturday morning, recalled Monique Gautschy, one of the surviving children who was 11 years old at the time. They were supposed to spend the night in the alpine pasture at Grilden and come back on Sunday. After two months of fruitless searching for the couple, the seven children, then aged 2 to 13, were placed in foster care. After more then seven decades the remains of their parents were discovered on July 13 -- preserved in the Tsanfleuron glacier at an altitude of 2,600 metres (8,500 feet) -- by an employee of a local ski resort.Backpacks, a watch and other personal belongings had been preserved in the ice nearby.Gautschy told AFP that police called to inform her of the definitive identification early on Wednesday. The priest at the Saviese church summed up the feelings at the funeral, saying three-quarters of a century later the family can at last stop asking the question: what happened to them?

Syria army announces halt in fighting in parts of Ghouta

Posted:

DAMASCUS (AFP) - Syrias army announced Saturday a halt in fighting in parts of Eastern Ghouta after rebels and regime ally Russia agreed on how a safe zone will function for the besieged opposition enclave. The army announces a halt in fighting in some areas of Eastern Ghouta in Damascus province from midday on Saturday (0900 GMT), it said in a statement carried by state news agency SANA.The army will retaliate in a suitable manner to any violation of the ceasefire, the statement said, without specifying what areas were included.Russia said earlier Saturday it had signed a deal with moderate Syrian rebels at peace talks in Cairo on how a safe zone would function in Eastern Ghouta.Eastern Ghouta is in one of four proposed de-escalation zones designated in an agreement reached by government allies Iran and Russia and rebel backer Turkey in May.But the deal has yet to be fully implemented over disagreements on the monitoring mechanism for the safe zones. The most recent talks in Kazakhstan this month between Russia, Turkey and Iran failed to iron out the details of the four safe zones.Russia said the sides have now signed agreements under which the borders of the de-escalation zone are defined as well as the deployment locations and powers of the forces monitoring the de-escalation.It said the sides had also agreed routes to supply humanitarian aid to the population and for free movement of residents.Russia said it plans to send in the first humanitarian convoy and evacuate the wounded in the next few days. The Eastern Ghouta region, a major rebel stronghold near the capital, has been the frequent target of government military operations.More than 330,000 people have been killed in Syria since its conflict broke out in March 2011 with anti-government protests.

Froome on brink of fourth Tour de France crown

Posted:

MARSEILLE (AFP) - Chris Froome all but secured a fourth Tour de France title by finishing third in Saturdays 20th stage time-trial in Marseille as Maciej Bodnar took the stage victory.Rigoberto Uran moved into second overall at 54 seconds, set to be the tightest winning margin of Froomes four Tour successes, while Romain Bardet held on for third by just one second ahead of Mikel Landa. Its incredible, the atmosphere here in Marseille, its massive being here in the stadium, said Froome, 32, who will nonetheless finish without a stage win this year. Its the Tour de France, you cant always win everything, said the Sky team leader. We had to put in the effort over three weeks and thats what we did.For Bodnar, it was sweet revenge have come within a few hundred metres of a solo victory on stage 11, before he was caught by a charging peloton and Marcel Kittel took the sprint finish. Its something special for me today. After the stage when I went alone I was thinking, I have to do something nice again.Today I got more luck than the other stage, Im really happy about this.In what has been the closest Tour battle in years, the top three riders started the day separated by less than 30 seconds, building hope for a grandstand finale in the steamy southern port city ahead of Sundays procession into Paris. But any such romantic notions of Frenchman Bardet overturning his 23sec deficit to Froome had disappeared long before the end of Saturdays 22.5km race against the clock, which began and ended in Marseilles iconic Velodrome football stadium.Bardet started the day second overall but only narrowly escaped the double humiliation of being pushed off the podium by Landa and overtaken by a charging Froome, who started his time-trial two minutes after the Frenchman.Froome reached the first time check after 10.2km in second place, two seconds behind team-mate Michal Kwiatkowski, with Bodnar third at 6sec.By then it was already clear there would be no grandstand finish as Uran was 23sec down on Froome having begun with a 29sec deficit, while Bardet had given up 44sec to the British leader.CrisisBy the second time check, Colombian Uran was starting to gain back a bit of time and looked certain to take second overall. But Bardet was in crisis, already 1min 17sec off Kwiatkowski, who still had the best time at the second check, although only fractions of a second ahead of Spanish veteran Alberto Contador, after 15.6km and the climb up to the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, with Froome fourth at 3sec.Spaniard Landa, who had started the day 1:13 behind Bardet, was now starting to threaten the Frenchmans podium hopes. At the finish, Uran almost came a cropper, hitting the side boardings on a tight bend in a technical run-in to the Velodrome. It cost him a few seconds but disaster was averted as he stayed upright to finish 31 seconds behind four-time Polish time-trial champion Bodnar, whose strong final section took him a second ahead of Kwiatkowski, the 2014 world road race champion.Coming second in this race is the most important result in my career, said Uran, 30, who has also twice finished runner-up at the Giro dItalia.Landa had finished 51sec back and as Bardet came into the stadium, fans were counting down the seconds to see if he would hang on to third place, while the looming yellow-clad figure of Froome lurked in his rear-view mirrors.Bardet finished 2:02 behind Bodnar to hold onto third by a single second while Froome crossed the line moments later, to claim third place on the stage and secure a fourth Tour title.Im at my limit, Im tired, I gave everything, said the 26-year-old.Im delighted to have given it everything and theres a little bit of success in having saved a podium place.

Coutinho stunner gives Liverpool Hong Kong win

Posted:

HONG KONG (AFP) - A moment of Philippe Coutinho magic lifted Liverpool to a 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the final of the preseason Premier League Asia Trophy on Saturday. With Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp rejecting a big-money offer from Spanish giants Barcelona for Coutinho earlier this week, the mercurial Brazilian underlined his important to the Reds with a flash of individual brilliance in Hong Kong. The 25-year-old picked the ball up on the left of the area on the stroke of halftime, jinked his way inside and let fly with a superb right-foot strike that proved to be the game-winner.Coutinho had earlier played the role of provider for new signing Mohamed Salah, dinking the ball on to the Egyptians head to cancel out Islam Slimanis 12th-minute nodded opener.Salah had already demonstrated during the preseason that the club record $45 million Klopp paid Roma for his services looks money well spent. His pace adding another dimension to Liverpools attack, the former Chelsea winger gave Leicesters Christian Fuchs a torrid time until he was substituted on 65 minutes.Klopp, whose side beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in midweek to reach the final, is still hoping to bring in Leipzig midfielder Nabi Keita, with Liverpool set to return with a final offer of around $97 million for the Guinea international.Palace won the third-place playoff earlier on Saturday, seeing off West Brom 2-0 in a testy affair that saw a heated exchange between players as they entered the tunnel at halftime. The match was settled by Luka Milivojevics sweetly struck free kick on 11 minutes and a deflected Bakary Sako shot that found the net with three minutes left in the first half.

Pedro bloodied as Chelsea beat Arsenal 3-0

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Chelsea forward Pedro was taken to hospital with a possible concussion after colliding with Arsenals goalkeeper during the Blues 3-0 preseason win over their London rivals in Beijing on Saturday. The 29-year-old Spaniard was left reeling on the ground with a bloodied face inside the first half hour of the game after Colombian keeper David Ospina flew into him while clearing a long-ball with two fists. After receiving medical attention on the pitch for several minutes, Pedro got up and walked off with blood in his nose, lips and right ear.For sure (he) should be okay but I think he had a concussion, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte told reporters after a Michy Batshuayi double sparked his side to an easy victory. For this reason our doctor preferred to bring him to the hospital and to check him in the right way, the Italian added. Its a pity because in this period now its not good to have this type of injury, but should be okay and Im very happy for this.Conte said he did not know whether Pedro would have to spend the night in hospital, but if the Spaniard is better on Sunday he will travel with the team to Singapore to continue the preseason. The injury scare overshadowed a brilliant performance by Belgian forward Batshuayi before a crowd of 55,618 at the Birds Nest in the Chinese capital.Media imaginationThe victory gave the Blues some measure of revenge against their London rivals after Arsenal stunned Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final in May to deny the Premier League champions the double.Batshuayi shone as Chelsea prepare to be joined by Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, who could make his debut against Bayern Munich in Singapore on Tuesday following his reported 80-million-euro ($92.2 million) transfer from Real Madrid.Batshuayi scored the second of his two goals five minutes into the second half, latching onto a pass from Marco Alonso to fire a curling shot past Ospina from just outside of the area.Arsenals own star signing, former Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, had a low-key game.French international Olivier Giroud entered the game in the second half and provided some spark but his early shots were saved or wide.Willian opened the scoring in the 40th minute, beating Ospina with a low drive. Two minutes later, Premier League player of the year NGolo Kante fed Batshuayi, who beat Ospina again with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box. After the game, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger brushed aside a question about rumours that Chile forward Alexis Sanchez could move to Paris St-Germain, saying: Its only media imagination.

Combating harassment on the streets

Posted:

By Maleeha Mengal“At first I was scared and then I felt angry all the way back home. I was shaking with anger and disappointment. I wish I could’ve done more at that moment than just scream, but I couldn’t. No one around me tried to help. He ran away when I tried confronting him.”Twenty-year-old Alina Ahmed was continuously cat-called at as she was walked from a Metro bus station to her Uber ride. Ahmed is just one of the many Pakistani women who have experienced public harassment at some point in their lives. In a public Facebook post, Ahmed shared her ordeal as well as why she had to post about it: “I’m done ignoring. I’m done not telling people about these things.”Recently many women have become vocal about their harassment experiences on the streets and in public areas than ever before. Now they share their experiences everyday through the internet on different social media sites. Another woman had recently shared her story about harassment during a trip to the northern areas which went viral in Pakistan, stirring a heated debate about the presence and acceptance of women in public spaces. The larger problem, however, is the acceptance of such a behavior which has lately begun being challenged by women.Director of the Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) at the University of the Punjab, Dr. Zakria Zakar explains the social reasons to why Pakistani culture allows such kind of a behavior. “Unfortunately this is our social psyche. If a boy behaves like a sexual deviant it is considered a normal behavior. There is a tolerance around this kind of act,” he says. “When they use foul language or behave in an indecent manner, people accept and it is considered very normal. We still lack basic decorum of public place decency.”He says there are myths and stereotypes that are used to describe a woman in our society. “It is considered that women are by nature weak, they can’t keep secrets, they talk a lot etc. These things sow the seeds of harassment, because we have built up a mindset around this definition of women” he explains. As long as this kind of stereotype remains in the definition of women, harassment will take place. He explains that despite public harassment being a global phenomenon, there is still some level of decency, especially in European countries where women can safely travel on buses and in public.Although Pakistan is still a young country where there are countless social issues associated with women, there are some ground breaking changes that have been seen over the course of time. Women are trying to break the gender roles associated with them especially in urban centres, by leaving the confines of their homes and by commuting in public transports. But while that phenomenon is taking place, waiting for a public transport or walking in public spaces also comes with its fair share of challenges. From slurs, sleazy remarks, catcalling from strangers passing by to even physical forms of harassment, women have faced it all.Carol Brooks Gardner, author of Passing By: Gender and Public Harassment (1995) defines public harassment as: “…abuses, harryings, and annoyances characteristic of public places and uniquely facilitated by communication in public.” The definition goes on to add pinching, slapping, hitting, vulgarity, sly innuendos, ogling, and stalking.Executive Director at HomeNet Pakistan Umme Laila Azhar has been working with the Government of Punjab to initiate projects that can help women to easily file complaints in a police station. She points out that the laws on harassment focus mostly on the workplace and there is greater awareness regarding it. “Although when it comes to street harassment it’s seen everywhere, on the streets, in public transport and bus stops. We tend to neglect women who are commuting on daily basis, not only in the urbanised areas but also in rural areas.”“Working women face this kind of harassment on a daily basis; men who catcall and harass us do not understand that their one sentence can impact women in a negative manner,” she says. “In my monitoring and observation on this issue, I have seen that women have to take all this for no reason.”Women are not complaining due to the social stigmas associated with the culture of feeling ashamed to file in a complaint against the accuser in police stations. For this Umme Laila is working hard with the government to provide women-assisted helpline desks in every station across the province. She adds to this, “but then again, women need that courage and confidence to go to a police station and report it. That is still absent from the picture.”There are almost 700 help desks available to assist women in filing in a complaint, she claims. To a question about whether women go to police stations or seek help from the police she answers, “Sadly, they do not.”Director of Bargad Organisation, Sabiha Shaheen is one of the few women who have been working for many years to sensitise men and women about harassment. According to her, working women face more harassment, especially while commuting, with people criticising her character, and colleagues watching them with suspicion.A research study on street harassment on girls was conducted in 2005 by Bargad funded by the Gender Equality Project (GEP) and supported by The British Council and the Department for International Development. The study which was focused in Gujranwala found that 96% of females have been the victim of street harassment while 88% male respondents agreed that men/boys harass women.Study conducted by Bargad in 2005 about street harassment Around 76% of male respondents said that they felt a sense of satisfaction after harassing women and 52% of male respondents agreed that harassment is for ‘enjoyment and fun’. Around 72% of girls responded that they felt extremely bad and angry when they are harassed. Forty percent of men replied that they felt a sense of sexual and mental satisfaction harassing women on the streets. The most common technique of street harassment is to whistle, according to the study. Almost 68% of female respondents said the biggest problem women face due to street harassment is their mobility. While the study is almost a decade old, Shaheen’s work is now more focused towards generating awareness. “We must empower women. We need to stop the victim blaming,” she says. “If a woman is speaking about her experiences we should not put the blame on her or tell her it must have been her who provoked the men to harass in public,” Shaheen adds. For the first time women safety audit tool has been launched by the Government of the Punjab which will try to assess women’s perceptions on safety especially in transportation facilities. The Punjab Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) is trying to tackle harassment through technology. Women safety smartphone application was launched this year. The app has a panic button that connects the user to the police and emergency services through the phone number 15. Safe cities project is taking on different initiatives to bring forth the neglected issue of harassment of women in public places.Umme Laila also sees hope with these initiatives in place including at transportation facilities and private cab services where awareness and sensitization programs are being put in place. “This kind of a mechanism is needed everywhere. They are aware of how to behave with a female customer, and if there is misbehavior on their behalf women can file in a complaint without any hesitation.”But the issue is about the basics. “They don’t know how it feels when they are harassing or cat calling women. They have no idea how one word can impact a woman who’s merely commuting,” says Umme Laila.
