Suspect kills eight in New York truck 'act of terror'

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A pickup driver killed eight people in New York on Tuesday, mowing down cyclists and pedestrians, before striking a school bus in what officials branded a cowardly act of terror.Eleven others were seriously injured in the broad daylight assault and first deadly terror-related attack in Americas financial and entertainment capital since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers.President Donald Trump, who has curbed the number of migrants entering the United States, swiftly declared that the US must not allow Islamic State jihadists to return, or enter, our country after defeating them overseas. The truck driver struck just blocks from the 9/11 Memorial, on the West Side of Lower Manhattan, and close to schools and a park at 3:05pm (1905 GMT) as children and their parents geared up to celebrate Halloween.Trump decried him as very sick and a deranged person. Television networks identified the 29-year-old suspect as an Uzbek citizen living in Florida. He was shot by an officer in the abdomen and taken into custody.Police said he drove a rented Home Depot pickup down a bike and pedestrian lane, plowing into people on foot and bicycles before colliding with a school bus, injuring two adults and two children. The suspect stepped out of the vehicle, brandishing two apparent handguns, before being shot in the abdomen by a police officer, police said.A paintball gun and pellet gun were recovered at the scene, police said. This was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them, said Mayor Bill de Blasio.Police said eight people were killed, six of them men who died on the spot, and two others pronounced dead in hospital. Eleven other people were taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, officials said.Belgium said one of its nationals was among the victims. It was the citys first terror incident since a pipe bomb exploded in September 2016 in Chelsea, lightly wounding 31 people. An American of Afghan descent, Ahmad Khan Rahimi, was convicted of terrorism on October 16 in relation with the attack.Heavily armed police reinforcements were stepped up across the city of 8.5 million in the wake of that attack. Home to Wall Street, Broadway and one of the biggest tourist draws in the United States, it frequently goes on high alert.A planned Halloween parade will go ahead as planned, proving that the city would not bow to threats, officials said.Prime Minister Theresa May said she was appalled by the attack and that Britain stood with New York. Together we will defeat the evil of terrorism, she said.French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed solidarity. Our fight for freedom unites us more than ever, he tweeted. While details were preliminary and the investigation still underway, the mayor said the suspect appeared to have been a lone wolf and not part of a wider plot.US media said the suspect shouted Allahu akbar and police chief James ONeill confirmed that he made a statement when he exited the vehicle. If you just look at the M.O. of the attack, thats consistent with whats been going on. So that along with the statement has enabled us to label this a terrorist event, he said.Television networks named him as Sayfullo Saipov, of Tampa, Florida. According to registry site WhitePages, a 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov has been living in Tampa since June 2011, and had other addresses registered in Ohio.He was listed as having had several traffic-related minor violations. In New York, police officers and ambulances swamped the area, in front of a park and next to a school as sirens wailed continuously and helicopters roared through the sky.Worried parents gathered outside a public elementary school that had closed, waiting to see if they could collect children who stayed after the end of the classes for extracurricular lessons and activities.John Williams, 22, on his way to a park at the time, said he did not witness the shooting, but arrived 30 seconds afterward. There was a smell of gunshots, he told AFP. There was a man lying on the ground. It looked as if hed been shot.State Governor Andrew Cuomo said the city was a target as an international symbol of freedom and democracy.Weve lived with this before, weve felt the pain before. We feel the pain today. But we go forward together, he added.A witness who gave his name only as Frank told local television network NY1 that he saw a man running around an intersection, heard five to six gunshots and saw about 100 cops flood into the street. When the cops shot him, everybody started running away and it got a little bit crazy right there. So when I tried to look again, the guy was already down, the witness said.Tuesdays attack came five months after a US Navy veteran plowed a car into pedestrians in Times Square, killing an 18-year-old woman from Michigan and injuring 22 other people on May 18 in what de Blasio said was not an act of terror.Previously, the most serious security breach in New York since Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani immigrant, plant a car bomb in Times Square on May 1, 2010.His explosive device failed to detonate and he was arrested shortly after boarding a flight to the Middle East. He pleaded guilty and said he was aiming to avenge deaths from US missiles fired from drones operating over Pakistan. He was sentenced to life behind bars.

Holder, Dowrich keep Windies in command in Zimbabwe

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - An unbroken 144-run stand for the eighth wicket between Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich ensured the West Indies emerged from day three of the second Test against Zimbabwe on Tuesday with a vital first-innings lead.Holder and Dowrich came together with the West Indies reeling on 230 for seven, still 96 runs short of Zimbabwes first-innings total, after Sikandar Raza tore into the tourists with a maiden five-wicket haul. They turned the game on its head with a counter-attacking partnership as Dowrich ended Tuesday unbeaten on a career-best 75, while Holder contributed 71 not out. That saw the West Indies to stumps on 374 for seven, leading by 48 runs.Sometimes youre going to have to raise your hand and say that we tried everything and it didnt work because the opposition have batted well, Raza said. Credit to them for batting that well. The record partnership for the eighth wicket at Queens Sports Club took some of the shine off the offspinners five for 82, which was the first five-wicket haul by a Zimbabwean in Tests at the ground since 2003.Having contributed 80 in the first innings, Raza was also the fifth Zimbabwean to score a 50 and take five wickets in a Test. While the second evening had produced attritional cricket as the West Indians crawled to stumps on 78 for one, the tourists were more adventurous on day three with opener Kieran Powell leading the way in a 55-run stand for the second wicket with nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo. It took the introduction of Raza to change the course of the morning, as he had Bishoo caught and bowled for 23 and then trapped Kyle Hope lbw for one.Powell looked destined for a fourth Test century after he was dropped on 85 by Graeme Cremer, but seamer Chris Mpofu ensured the mistake was not costly as he used the second new ball to have the opener caught at gully for 90.An attacking 56-run stand for the fifth wicket between Shai Hope and Roston Chase put the West Indies back on top after lunch, before Raza intervened once again. After Chase was trapped lbw for 32 by the offspinner, Hope was bowled for 40 and Jermaine Blackwood became Razas fifth victim. With a large deficit and just three wickets in hand the West Indies looked set to concede a first-innings lead on a difficult pitch, but Dowrich and Holder swung the match back in their favour. Were only 48 runs ahead, but weve put lots of miles on their legs, said Powell. Were going to come back tomorrow with two set guys, put some more miles on their legs and stretch out that lead as much as possible. Any lead is a good lead on this pitch.

Kiwis aim to extend perfect T20 record against India

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Big-hitting batsman Colin Munro believes New Zealands perfect Twenty20 record against India will inspire confidence as the Kiwis try to rebound from losing a one-day series. The Kiwis have won all five of the T20 matches they have played against India. Having never won a Test or one-day series in India, the T20 record is one they will be anxious to keep when a series starts Wednesday in New Delhi.India were stretched in the three one-day internationals by Kane Williamsons side, but prevailed in a thrilling final contest Sunday to take the series 2-1.Munro, who top-scored for the Black Caps with a 62-ball 75 in the third clash, is hoping the team rediscovers its winning ways in New Delhi.Everyone looks forward to T20. I think its a lot of fun, we enjoy it and we have been lucky enough in the last couple of years to be successful in it, Munro said.We have a good record against India so we are looking forward to this one. Hopefully we can get off to a good start, the left-handed opener added. After two disappointing performances, Munro dazzled with the bat in his teams near-miss chase of 338 at Kanpurs Green Park on Sunday. But the 30-year-old batsman is wary of Indias new-ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who was instrumental in blocking the visitors run chase. The big challenge for me was just actually finding a good tempo to bat at. Id like to say that I want to go and blast off in the first 10 overs but its not always going to be the case, especially when you are playing against Bhuvi and Bumrah, said Munro. They are probably two of the best opening bowlers in these conditions, he added.Munro, who has been in and out of the limited-overs team since making his debut in 2012, said valuable advice from former captain Brendon McCullum lifted his confidence ahead of the series decider. It is a funny one, actually, because after the second game I wouldnt say I was down but I hadnt got off to a start I wanted to while opening the batting, so I sent him a text message to ask him his thoughts and let him know what I was thinking, said Munro. And again he came out and said, Mate, you know you got a good record in T20 and the way you play at the top of the order. If you can, try and implement that in the ODI game. The Delhi opener will also be Indian paceman Ashish Nehras farewell match at his home ground at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Bangladesh to probe South Africa debacle

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs cricket board said Tuesday it would launch an investigation into its humiliating drubbing during a recent tour of South Africa in one of its worst performances on record.Bangladesh lost every match in all three formats, with David Miller smashing the fastest century in Twenty20 history off just 35 balls from the hapless visitors.Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan said the players, managers and coaching staff would be questioned over the woeful showing. The overall performance was very bad. Of course, we have some questions, Hasan told reporters in Dhaka. We have to know if there were other problems. We all know Bangladesh can lose games, but we cannot accept the way they lost them.Their bowlers, who were lacklustre throughout the tour, were not all to blame as the batsmen could not do anything even on a flat wicket, Hasan said.Bangladesh only attained Test status in 2000, and rank ninth on the international ladder, but have enjoyed some recent wins at home over Australia, Sri Lanka and England. But their drubbing abroad has highlighted the bigger challenge for the cricket minnows, Hasan said.Bangladesh are expected to host Sri Lanka in January in their next series, before travelling to the West Indies in February.

Football: Misfiring Dortmund reject crisis talk

Posted:

DORTMUND (AFP) - Borussia Dortmund have lost their status as Bundesliga leaders and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has stopped scoring, but coach Peter Bosz denied talk of a crisis before Wednesdays Champions League tie against APOEL.There was no crisis - and there is no crisis - Hanover were just more aggressive than us, Bosz insisted after Saturdays 4-2 defeat at Hanover 96 saw Bayern Munich replace Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga.Nevertheless, Dortmund face an uphill fight to reach the knockout stages of Europe as they trail both Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur by six points in Group H after three matches.Defeats by Tottenham and Real, before a draw at APOEL in Nicosia a fortnight ago, have left Dortmund, Champions League finalists in 2013, facing a group-stage exit.Yet Bosz still harbours hopes of reaching the last 16.You have to keep believing, its still not over and tomorrows game is important for us, said the Dutchman. But all is not well in the Dortmund camp.A 5-0 German Cup victory at third-division Magdeburg last week is Dortmunds only win in their last five games. To make matters worse, Aubameyang, the Bundesligas top scorer last season, is goalless in his last three games despite netting 15 times in all competitions so far this term. When Aubameyang, or a striker in general, doesnt score goals, criticism will follow and it will be discussed, said Bosz. But when he works hard and the team plays well, everything is fine.Every striker has phases when he doesnt score in one, two or three games and I am certain he will score again soon.APOEL will fancy their chances at Dortmunds Signal Iduna Park where defeat will end either teams hopes of progressing to the next stage. The teams drew 1-1 in the first meeting when a blunder by Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki saw Mickael Pote give APOEL a shock lead before defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos equalised with a header.- Focus on Plan A -On Saturday, Dortmunds shaky defence was brutally exposed by Hanover 96, who mercilessly dismantled the visitors with a series of counter-attacks.For the third league game in a row, Dortmunds defence left far too many holes to exploit. We have analysed the game against Hanover and were happy that we can play again at home, said captain Marcel Schmelzer. Our attitude wasnt good enough (at Hanover) and we quickly need to find the form which has made us strong. The German media is blaming Dortmunds struggles on Boszs 4-3-3 system and the Dutchman said it is important his team regain their confidence. We have a Plan B for when things go wrong, but its more important that we focus on our Plan A, which didnt work in Hanover, said Bosz.We have to concentrate on our game.In the space of two weeks, Dortmund have seen a five-point lead evaporate and they now trail Bayern by three points in Germany.Dortmund and Bosz need a win, not just to boost their fading Champions League chances, but to get their entire season back on track.

Why are there holes in biscuits

Posted:

(Web Desk) – Cream filled biscuits have holes but have you ever wondered why it is so?A famous biscuit company has finally revealed the answer. Recently, international biscuit brand Bourbon invited some media persons for a tour in their manufacturing company where they witnessed the processing and production of biscuits. In this documentry regarding the manufacturing of biscuits, the factory manager revealed why there are holes in biscuits, he told that holes are created in cream filled biscuits to allow for heat to escape from biscuits during baking. He revealed that if holes were not to be created, then the heat would not be able to escape and temprature would not become stable in biscuits causing crack formation that can even cause the biscuits to break and such a faulty product would not be acceptable for either the market or the direct consumer. It is noteworthy that Bourbon brand enjoys the status of being the favorite biscuit to be taken with tea.

Son accused of killing his wealthy S.African family testifies

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - A son of a wealthy South African family on trial for killing his parents and a brother with an axe on Tuesday recounted the grisly attack which he has blamed on intruders.Henri van Breda, 22, who has pleaded not guilty, calmly took to the witness stand for the first time since the trial opened in April in the Western Cape High Court. The former University of Melbourne student is alleged to have killed his 21-year-old brother Rudi and parents Martin, 54, and Teresa, 55, and left his sister Marli struggling with near-fatal injuries to the head, neck and throat. He casually narrated his version of the night of January 27 in 2015, when his family was hacked to death at their home inside a secure golf estate in Stellenbosch, east Cape Town.I saw the silhouette of someone...the person was busy attacking, swinging an object at where Rudi was laying, he told the court while exhibiting no emotion in a testimony live-streamed on television.Van Breda claimed he was using the toilet while also playing games on his phone when he heard the intruders break-in.Asked if he had killed his parents and brother with an axe, he repeatedly replied no, saying he had no reason whatsoever to murder anyone in his close-knit family, whose fortune has been estimated at $16 million. He said he survived the attack with superficial stab wounds inflicted as he wrestled the attacker who was trying to slit his throat. The state insists the wounds were self-inflicted.On why he did not call for help from neighbours during the attack, Van Breda answered in hindsight, its something I should have done.Instead, he first phoned his girlfriend, before looking up the emergency numbers. In a leaked tape of his call to emergency services, Van Breda could be heard telling an operator that his family members were bleeding from the head.He also giggled during the call although in court he denied ever laughing.Police failed to arrest anyone until Van Breda handed himself in to authorities 18 months after the attack which shocked South Africa. The family had relocated to Australia many years ago before returning home to South Africa in 2014.

Social media giants to defend Russia-linked posts before senators

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tech giants Facebook, Twitter and Google are set to go before senators Tuesday to defend their security measures as new revelations have emerged that Russian-linked accounts reached many more American voters than previously thought.Testimony from Facebook obtained by The Associated Press on Monday revealed that posts generated by a Russian internet agency potentially reached as many as 126 million users. In the testimony, the company said that pages created by Russia’s Internet Research Agency generated 80,000 posts on 120 pages between January 2015 and August 2017. Possible views reached the millions after people liked the posts and shared them.Colin Stretch, Facebook’s general counsel, plans to disclose the new numbers to Congress in testimony to a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the testimony. The person declined to be named because the committee has not officially released it. Facebook, along with Twitter and Google, are set to testify at three hearings Tuesday and Wednesday as part of congressional probes of Russian election interference.Stretch’s testimony makes clear that many of those users may never have seen the material. The company says the total number represents around 1 out of 23,000 pieces of content on the site. These “organic” posts that appeared in Facebook users’ news feeds are distinct from more than 3,000 advertisements linked to the agency that Facebook has already turned over to congressional committees. The ads — many of which focused on divisive social issues — pointed people to the agency’s pages, where they could then like or share its material.Twitter plans to tell the same subcommittee that it has uncovered and shut down 2,752 accounts linked to the same group, Russia’s Internet Research Agency, which is known for promoting pro-Russian government positions. That number is nearly 14 times larger than the number of accounts Twitter handed over to congressional committees three weeks ago, according to a person familiar with the matter. This person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the new findings ahead of the hearing on Tuesday. And Google announced in a blog post that it found evidence of “limited” misuse of its services by the Russian group, as well as some YouTube channels that were likely backed by Russian agents.Lawmakers have pressured the social media companies to come forward and have criticized them for not being fully forthcoming immediately after the election. All three firms are expected to face questions about what evidence of Russian interference they found on their services, as well as why they didn’t find it earlier. Lawmakers are also expected to probe whether the firms know of any connections between the Russian posts and the Trump campaign.South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary subcommittee holding the hearing, said in a statement that manipulation of social media by terrorist organizations and foreign governments is “one of the greatest challenges to American democracy” and he wants to make sure the companies are doing everything possible to combat it.“Clearly, to date, their efforts have been unsuccessful,” Graham said.On Twitter, the Russia-linked accounts put out 1.4 million election-related tweets from September through Nov. 15 last year — nearly half of them automated. The company also found nine Russian accounts that bought ads, most of which came from the state-backed news service Russia Today, or RT.Twitter said last week it would no longer accept ads from RT and Sputnik, another state-sponsored news outlet. It will donate the $1.9 million it has earned from RT since 2011 to support external research into political uses of Twitter.Google said that two accounts linked to the Russian group spent $4,700 on ads its platforms during the 2016 election. The company also found 18 YouTube channels likely backed by Russian agents. Those channels hosted 1,108 videos with 43 hours of material, although they racked up just 309,000 views in the U.S. between June 2015 and November 2016, Google said. The companies will almost certainly do what they can to convince lawmakers that they can fix the problem on their own, without the need for regulation. A bill unveiled earlier this month would require social media companies to keep public files of election ads and require companies to “make reasonable efforts” to make sure that foreign individuals or entities are not purchasing political advertisements in order to influence Americans. The companies haven’t commented on the proposed legislation, but say they’re at work on the problem. Last week Facebook said it will verify political ad buyers in federal elections and build transparency tools to link ads to the Facebook pages of their sponsors. Twitter has also said it will require election-related ads for candidates to disclose who is paying for them and how they are targeted.Google announced on Monday that it will also verify the identity of election-related ad buyers and identify these advertisers publicly via an ad icon. It will provide a public database of election ads detailing who purchased each one, and will publish a transparency report on election ads as well.

SpaceX launches Korean satellite, sticks rocket landing

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket Monday carrying a South Korean communications satellite to boost broadband coverage for southeast Asia and the Middle East, and stuck its 19th rocket landing in two years. The tall, white rocket roared into the blue sky over Cape Canaveral, Florida at 3:34 pm (1934 GMT), propelling Koreasat-5A toward a geostationary orbit some 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) from Earth. The satellite is designed to replace an earlier version, called Koreasat 5, which launched in 2006. The satellite was successfully deployed, SpaceX confirmed about 45 minutes after lauch.Minutes after launch, the rocket separated and the tall portion, called the first stage, fired its engines and maneuvered its grid fins to guide itself back to an upright landing on an ocean platform.Less than nine minutes after takeoff, the scorched rocket touched down on a droneship marked with an X and labeled Of Course I Still Love You.A little toasty but the Stage 1 is certainly still intact on the droneship, said a SpaceX commentator, as video images showed the rocket standing upright on the platform.Mondays launch marked the 16th for SpaceX so far this year.Headed by space enthusiast and solar energy entrepreneur Elon Musk, SpaceX is working on re-using rocket parts after launch -- rather than jettisoning them into the ocean as is the typical practice. So far, the company has managed to land 12 rockets on ocean platforms and seven on solid ground. The goal is to save money and eventually bring down the cost of space travel.

US detains 10-year-old Mexican girl with cerebral palsy

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - US immigration officials last week followed a 10-year-old undocumented girl with cerebral palsy to a Texas hospital and detained her after surgery for deportation, advocates charged Monday. The American Civil Liberties Union, in a letter sent to multiple government agencies in charge of refugee children, demanded Rosa Maria Hernandez be released to her parents, who live in the US city of Laredo along the Mexico border.Forcibly separating Rosa Maria from her family inflicts serious psychological and emotional injury on her and on her entire family, the ACLU said in its letter. The civil rights group gave the government until Tuesday afternoon to release the child, before it would take immediate legal action.Hernandez suffers from cerebral palsy, a brain developmental illness that affects body movement and muscle control. Her mother brought her illegally into the US from Mexico when she was three months old for better medical care, according to US media reports. They crossed from Nuevo Laredo to Laredo -- adjacent cities separated by the border. The girl traveled last week by ambulance to a hospital in a nearby Texas city for surgery, accompanied by a US citizen adult relative.Immigration agents stopped them at a checkpoint and followed them to the hospital, where they monitored her medical treatment and took her into custody after doctors released her, according to the ACLU and media reports. Her arrest has caused outrage, with some questioning the Donald Trump administrations priorities, amid increasing detentions of undocumented immigrants.US President Donald Trump has called for tougher enforcement, promising to focus on those who commit crimes while in the US illegally.Supporters raised more than $26,000 on GoFundMe to help with Hernandezs legal costs. The Washington Post, in an editorial, questioned the judgment -- not to mention humanity -- of federal agents. And, US Congressman Joaquin Castro -- a Texas Democrat who sits on foreign affairs and intelligence committees -- last week added, A small child who just had surgery is not a threat. The US agency in charge of child migrant care told AFP that it could not comment on a specific case. It said it generally endeavors to release children to approved sponsors through an application process.US Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for comment.

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia paceman Josh Hazlewood has warned Joe Roots England tourists and their raft of Ashes debutants they risk being exposed if their big guns dont fire in the coming series.Englands depleted squad touched down in Perth on Sunday without suspended star all-rounder Ben Stokes.Their arrival coincided with Hazlewoods Test pace partner Mitchell Starc picking up a career-best eight wickets with the pink ball in a Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide. The world number twos inexperienced batting line-up has been highlighted as its biggest weakness as it aims to emulate the feat of Andrew Strauss men by becoming only the second England team to retain the Ashes urn in Australia in 31 years. While doubts remain about the security of Australias top six batsmen, there is an air of confidence among their bowling attack heading into the opening Test at the Gabba on November 23.If you get him (Root), Alastair Cook and Jonny Bairstow, who have been scoring runs the last few years, it places extra pressure on the inexperienced guys even more so, Hazlewood told Fairfax Media. If we get the wood on them hopefully the rest fall in line.Only Root, Cook and Bairstow have played a Test in Australia, while Gary Ballance was dropped during the last Ashes series and James Vince, Mark Stoneman and Dawid Malan have played a combined total of 17 Tests without scoring a century.Root, rated the worlds second-best Test batsman, shapes as the key wicket for Australia despite a horror campaign in 2013/14 when he passed 50 once in eight innings and was then dropped.Hes a pretty good all-round player, you dont get to the top couple for no reason, Hazlewood said. He seems to be scoring quicker at the moment as well, at 80 strike-rate, the last 12 months.Hes definitely getting on with it so hopefully that gives us an extra couple of opportunities. Hes got a pretty well-rounded game at the moment.Starcs best first-class figures of his career could not have come at a better time, but will also be welcomed by the England seamers, particularly Stuart Broad.Broad is expected to be a handful at Adelaide Oval when the tourists play their first day-night Test in early December. Its been a long time since Ive played a four-day fixture so it was nice to get some overs under the belt (37.4 for the game) and get ready for that first Test, a fit-again Starc said on Sunday. The ball swung and nipped a little bit and I managed to get it to move both ways and find a way to get a few wickets.

Sprint, T-Mobile shares sink after report says talks off

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Shares in Sprint and T-Mobile fell sharply Monday following a Japanese media report that merger talks between the third- and fourth-largest wireless operators had been called off.T-Mobile fell 2.8 percent to $61.21 and Sprint, which is controlled by Japans SoftBank, sank 4.6 percent to $6.65 at 1800 GMT.Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei reported that the two carriers had called off talks aimed at creating a stronger competitor to top US carriers Verizon and AT&T.The report said SoftBank and T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom failed to agree on terms of a tie-up.The two firms had held talks in 2014 on a merger but ended discussions in the face of opposition from US regulators. In the latest round, reports said the German parent group had insisted on a majority stake and that SoftBank did not want to cede control.T-Mobile ranks third among US wireless carriers by subscribers, followed by Sprint in fourth place.Together, the pair would have 131 million subscribers, which would see them virtually match second-ranked AT&T and pose stiff competition to market leader Verizon Communications.SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son, who was among the first businessmen to meet President Donald Trump after his election victory last year, had been reportedly pushing for the tie-up as part of his effort to invest $50 billion in business and job-creation in the United States.

Roma coach wants 'same mentality' in Chelsea rematch

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco called on his players to have the same mentality against Chelsea in Tuesdays Champions League game in Rome as in London two weeks ago.Roma have won all three of their league games since drawing 3-3 with Chelsea a fortnight ago, and Di Francesco called on his team to continue to build on the performance at Stamford Bridge. In London we saw a beautiful Roma and tomorrow I want to see the same mentality, Di Francesco told Mondays press conference at the Stadio Olimpico.I want the same mentality as the one we adopted in our previous games. The mentality must be the same. That game must be a starting point for us.The idea is also to be more realistic than during the last three league matches (three 1-0 wins) where we lacked something.Roma -- who have not reached the quarter-finals since 2007-2008 -- are now looking for a victory to overtake Antonio Contes men at the top of Group C.The winner of the clash at the Stadio Olimpico will be well-placed to reach the last 16.I hope we will play with the same approach, maybe we can also be more effective and take more of our chances, continued Di Francesco. Were growing and the great strength of this team is that we give away very little. We respect Chelsea, but were also convinced about what we can do.Roma have a number of injury problems with record summer signing Patrik Schick still not fit to play.He has been reporting some pain when he kicks the ball, so he had new tests which did not show any major problem, said Di Francesco.Either way, tomorrow he will not be included in the squad list, and we will assess for the next game against Fiorentina.Roma have also been hampered by injuries to Gregoire Defrel (ankle), Bruno Peres (hamstring) and Rick Karsdorp (cruciate ligament).I dont believe in coincidences or bad luck. We have to look at Bruno Peres separately, who got injured in a very specific part of his hamstring, said the Roma coach. In general, however, we are working hard on solutions. But regardless of what you all are saying, I only have one thing in mind - tomorrow we are playing Chelsea, in front of our fans.It will be a great atmosphere and I hope the team will make them happy.

Lukaku should be 'untouchable', says Mourinho

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Jose Mourinho says Romelu Lukaku should be untouchable after questioning his treatment by Manchester Uniteds fans for the second time in three days.Lukaku made a lightning start to his United career, scoring 11 goals in his first 10 games for the club following his $99 million move from Everton in July. However, he has not scored in his past five appearances and Mourinho has suggested that he is not getting enough support from the fans. The manager voiced his displeasure initially to MUTV, the clubs in-house television station, after Saturdays 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham, in which Lukakus flick created the winning goal for Anthony Martial.Lukaku, 24, also hit the post during that match, and Mourinho was keen to emphasis his centre-forwards general contribution as his team prepared for Tuesdays Champions League home match against Benfica. The fans are the fans and I am also told the fans pay for their tickets and they are free to express themselves the way they want to express themselves, Mourinho said at Uniteds training base. But my job is to protect my players when I feel they deserve it and I think Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of the respect from everyone. Its not one ball that hit the post or not one save from the opposition goalkeeper that can make Romelus contribution below the top level. Hes playing extremely well for us.What he does for the team is fantastic, added the United boss. He is fantastic. And playing football, for a striker, is not just about scoring goals.Mourinho rejected the suggestion that Lukaku can be a quiet presence when he is not scoring goals, arguing that the striker gave Tottenhams Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier a tough time on Saturday.- Knockout phase -Victory over Benfica could secure Uniteds place in the knockout phase of the Champions League and Mourinho believes his team are growing stronger in Europe. The manager believes the club have made progress since winning the Europa League last season, when they also finished in the relatively low position of sixth in the Premier League. This is a logical consequence of evolution, said Mourinho. We played in the Europa League and won it, so my team are now playing in the Champions League. I think we are much better than last year or three years ago.Our main aim is to finish first in the group. We want to get to the last 16 as first in the group.United defender Eric Bailly echoed his managers suggestion that the team are getting stronger, in a season in which English teams are flourishing in the Champions League. All five Premier League sides in the competition are currently top of their groups and Bailly said: We know its one of the best leagues and there are good teams, and theyre getting good results. Its something important for the league, and the Premier League has always been strong. We have to think of ourselves and carry on this run. Right now were doing very well, winning games, lets hope this carries on.

Gritty Windies dig in before Cremer strikes

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - Zimbabwe legspinner Graeme Cremer struck late on day two to end a turgid opening stand and keep the West Indies in check in the second Test at Queens Sports Club on Monday.A grinding partnership of 76 in almost 47 overs between Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell had given the West Indies a solid base in their reply to Zimbabwes 326 all out, before Cremer removed Brathwaite for 32 to send the visitors to stumps on 78 for one. There are a lot of runs in that wicket, said West Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach. The new ball hasnt been doing much - no major bounce or seam movement.Once the guys settle and put their heads down to bat, I think well be fine.Powell closed the day unbeaten on 43, while nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo was yet to get off the mark. While the second half of the day was attritional, the first half had been entertaining as Hamilton Masakadza turned his unbeaten 101 from Sunday into 147, and Sikandar Raza scored a battling 80.With the pair extending their partnership for the fifth wicket to 90, Zimbabwes total moved along from an overnight 169 for four to 246 for four before the West Indies struck three times in quick succession.Masakadza top-edged a delivery from legspinner Bishoo and was caught by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, before Malcolm Waller and Regis Chakabva both departed cheaply, with Chakabva becoming Bishoos 100th Test dismissal. From 267 for seven Raza stabilised the innings alongside captain Cremer, but the West Indies took the second new ball after lunch and needed just 55 deliveries to wrap up the tail.Raza was caught at second slip off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel, while Cremer was run out and debutant Tendai Chisoro was trapped lbw by Roach, who finished with figures of 3 for 44.In reply, Brathwaite and Powell ended a run of 18 innings without a fifty partnership as they took the patient approach to batting on a slow, turning surface. They cautiously guided their side through the first 16 overs to reach tea on 25 without loss, then added just 51 runs in the next 31 overs.Offspinner Raza bowled his 13 overs for just 10 runs as the West Indies at times ground to a halt, giving Zimbabwe confidence that a couple of quick strikes on the third morning will put them back in charge of a game that they must win to earn a share of the series.Considering the number of overs weve bowled, the run rate is a bit slow, even for Test cricket, said left-arm spinner Chisoro. So if you add two wickets onto that score, its a different ball game.

Trump aides indicted as Russia probe accelerates

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Donald Trumps former campaign chairman and two other senior aides have been charged as part of the investigation into Russias manipulation of the 2016 election, bombshell court documents revealed Monday.Paul Manafort and associate Rick Gates were hit with a dozen indictments ranging from conspiracy against the United States to money laundering, while another former campaign aide pled guilty to lying about Kremlin-related contacts. The unsealed charges were an explosive opening salvo from special FBI investigator Robert Mueller, after months of speculation and spin about possible Trump campaign collusion with Moscow. While falling far short of being a smoking gun for conspiracy, the unproven charges suggest a pattern of top Trump associates looking East for political and economic gain.Manafort, 68, and campaign business partner Rick Gates, 45, were charged with allegedly hiding millions of dollars gleaned from work with Ukrainian politician Viktor Yanukovych and his pro-Moscow political party.George Papadopoulos, a former Trump foreign policy advisor, admitted he tried to hide contacts with a Moscow-linked professor who was offering dirt on Trumps election rival Clinton.Papadopoulos also said he met with a woman he described as Vladimir Putins niece as well as with the Russian ambassador in London in March last year, after which he told other campaign officials that they had discussed arranging meetings with Trump and campaign staff. The revelations prompted a furious and defiant reaction from Trump, who dismissed allegations of collusion and called on election rival Hillary Clinton to be investigated.Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign. But why arent Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus????? Trump tweeted. ....Also, there is NO COLLUSIONBut the charges signal a dramatic new phase in Muellers investigation, one that holds grave perils for the Trump presidency.Papadopoulos told the FBI that he had informed Trump and others in a March 2016 meeting that he could organize a meeting between then candidate Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.Through his false statements and omissions, defendant Papadopoulos impeded the FBIs ongoing investigation into the existence of any links or coordination between individuals associated with the campaign and the Russian governments efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, the indictment said.US intelligence agencies have concluded that Putin ordered a vast influence campaign to help Trump win election, including the hack and release of Democratic Party and Clinton campaign emails. As Muellers investigation has rumbled forward, Trump and allied media organizations like Fox News have increasingly called the former FBI directors independence into question.Democrats -- who dismiss counter allegations against Mueller and Clinton as a blatant attempt to divert attention -- on Monday called for the special counsel to be protected. The President must not, under any circumstances, interfere with the special counsels work in any way, said top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer. If he does so, Congress must respond swiftly, unequivocally, and in a bipartisan way to ensure that the investigation continues.Manafort and Rick Gates were due to appear before a US magistrate later Monday.- Focus on Ukraine -Manafort was among the participants of a June 9, 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Kremlin-linked lawyer that raised suspicions of collusion between the campaign and Moscow. The meeting was arranged by Trumps eldest son, Donald Jr, in hopes of receiving damaging information on Clinton.Manaforts indictment made no mention of Russian involvement in the US campaign, however, focusing instead on Manaforts earlier Ukrainian ties.A long-time political operative and consultant, he was recruited in March 2016 to round up pro-Trump delegates to the Republican Party convention. Then in June Trump named him campaign chairman, replacing fired Corey Lewandowski. But in August he resigned as Ukraine corruption investigators released files showing large payments to Manafort companies and it became clear he was under investigation in the United States in relation to that.Federal law enforcement officials were reportedly aware of wire transfers linked to Manafort as far back as 2012, when they began investigating whether he committed tax fraud or helped the Ukrainian regime -- at the time close to Russian leader Vladimir Putin -- launder money.

Six dead as Israel blows up tunnel from Gaza

Posted:

GAZA CITY (AFP) - Six Palestinians were killed Monday as Israel blew up what it said was a tunnel stretching from the Gaza Strip into its territory, a rare case of such an incident since a devastating 2014 war.Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for the Hamas-led Gazan health ministry, confirmed six men had been killed. One of the men came from Hamas armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades confirmed, while at least some of the others were believed to be from Islamic Jihad, an allied militant group.Their deaths were announced after Israel neutralised a terror tunnel leading into southern Israel, military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told journalists. The tunnel was detonated from within Israel, close to the security fence.Tunnels dug by Gazas Islamist rulers Hamas were a key issue in the last war with Israel in 2014, but discoveries of those stretching into the Jewish state have since been rare.Islamic Jihad said in a statement that the tunnels were part of the policy of deterrence to defend the Palestinian people. It added they were studying potential responses to this dangerous escalation.Conricus said the Israeli military was not seeking a further escalation. He said the tunnel was targeted around two kilometres (less than two miles) from the Israeli village of Kissufim, but added that no Israelis had been in danger. He said the tunnel was still being dug and no opening was found in Israeli territory. The military had been monitoring it for some time, Conricus said, declining to say when it was first discovered. In April 2016, Israels military said it had located and destroyed a tunnel extending from the Gaza Strip into Israel in the first such discovery since the 2014 conflict.Breakthrough technologyHamas forces have used tunnels in the past to enter Israel and carry out attacks. We are developing breakthrough technology to deal with the tunnel threat, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. We are implementing it. Today we located a tunnel and destroyed it. Whoever seeks to harm us will be hit.Conricus also said Israel used advanced technology to locate the tunnel but declined to elaborate.Mondays operation came as Palestinian rival factions Hamas and Fatah seek to follow through on a reconciliation deal signed earlier this month aimed at ending a decade-long rift between them.Hamas is due to hand control of the Gaza Strip back to the Palestinian Authority by December 1 under the agreement. The Islamist movement seized the enclave in a near civil war with Fatah, based in the occupied West Bank, in 2007.Israel has warned that it will not accept a unity government that includes Hamas if the Islamist movement does not disarm and recognise the country, among other demands.Israel launched its 2014 operation in Gaza with the stated objectives of halting rocket fire and destroying attack tunnels into Israel.During the war, 32 tunnels were discovered, including 14 that extended into Israel, according to a UN report on the conflict. It was the third war in Gaza since 2008 and the longest, deadliest and most destructive. It killed 2,251 Palestinians, while more than 10,000 were wounded and 100,000 were left homeless. On the Israeli side, 74 people were killed, all but six of them soldiers.Israeli leaders have been keen to show they are addressing the threat of tunnels from the Gaza Strip.A state inquiry in February accused Netanyahu and top army brass of being unprepared for the tunnels used by Hamas during the 2014 conflict.

Pakistan mark Sri Lanka return with Twenty20 win

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistan marked the return of Sri Lanka with a 3-0 Twenty20 series whitewash on Sunday, as officials hoped the match will help reestablish the countrys reputation for hosting international cricket. The third and final Twenty20 match, which Pakistan comfortably won by 36 runs at Gaddafi stadium in Lahore, was Sri Lankas first since their team bus was attacked near the same venue in March 2009.Those attacks, which left eight people dead and seven Sri Lanka players and their staff injured, suspended international cricket in Pakistan and forced them to play at neutral venues of United Arab Emirates (UAE).The first two matches, which Pakistan won by seven and two wickets respectively, were played in Abu Dhabi before Sri Lanka flew to Lahore in a 24-hour fly in, fly out arrangement. The match was the fourth international since the attack, with Zimbabwe playing a five-match limited over series in 2015 followed by the final of Pakistan Super League and a three-match Twenty20 series with the World XI comprising of players from seven countries -- both this year.Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi dubbed the match historic. This is historic because it marks the beginning of a new era of international cricket in Pakistan, said Sethi. This sends a big signal to the rest of the cricketing nations that Pakistan is ready to host international cricket.Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanag Sumathipala vowed his board will not leave Pakistan in isolation. We are happy and privileged to be here to support Pakistan cricket, said Sumathipala. Its a wonderful cricketing nation. Pakistan has done so much for world cricket and to sports in general so we cannot leave them in isolation. However, a rampaging Pakistan side did not show any mercy to their opponents as they piled up 180-3 in their 20 overs.Shoaib Malik, the only player from both the sides to have also featured in the fateful 2009 Lahore Test, smashed a 24-ball 51 with five boundaries and two sixes. He added 75 for the third wicket with Babar Azam (34 not out) in just 45 balls. Openers Umar Amin (37-ball 45 with a six and three boundaries) and Fakhar Zaman (27-ball 31 with three fours) were the other contributors.Pace bowler Mohammad Amir, playing his first international match before the home crowd after making his debut soon after the terrorists attacks, finished with a career best 4-13 as Sri Lanka managed 144-9 in 20 overs.Only Dasun Shanaka batted with aggression during a 36-ball 54 with five boundaries and three sixes before he became one of Faheem Ashrafs two wickets. This becomes Pakistans second 3-0 whitewash in a Twenty20 series, having previously beaten the West Indies in UAE last year.Thousands of fans filled Gaddafi Stadium under intense security, as the countries respective national anthems were played before a capacity 23,000 crowd. The city was adorned with pictures of the Sri Lankan cricketers as fans converged on the stadium hours before the start of the match.Fans applauded both the teams before the start of the match and beat drums in an exhilarating atmosphere.Sethi hoped Sri Lankas return will be followed by a three-match Twenty20 series with the world champions, West Indies, next month, which is due to be finalised in the next few days.Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed thanked the Sri Lankan team and the crowd.I thank Sri Lankan team for coming to Pakistan as it was a great gesture, said Ahmed. It was lovely to play before home crowds and win.Sri Lankan skipper Thisara Perera said his players were honoured. We want to thanks the Pakistan fans for inviting us, said Perera. We love you and it was an honour to lead this young side.

Masakadza ton leads Zimbabwe recovery

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - Hamilton Masakadzas fifth Test century helped Zimbabwe recover from a horror start to the second Test against the West Indies on Sunday and end a rain-hit first day on 169 for four.Just 61 overs were possible as rain wiped out most of the final session, but that was still enough time for Masakadza to register an unbeaten 101 and drag Zimbabwe out of a hole. The home side slumped to 14 for three after winning the toss and electing to bat first, as fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel struck with the new ball.In cloudy conditions it took Roach just two overs to make the first breakthrough as he had Solomon Mire caught behind, and Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor soon followed when they were bowled by Gabriel and Roach respectively. Those early setbacks meant that Peter Moor, who was only picked at the last minute when allrounder Sean Williams withdrew because of illness, walked out to bat in challenging conditions. But he duly dug in for a 142-run stand for the fourth wicket with Masakadza, putting Zimbabwe back in a match that they must win to earn a share of the series.I actually had quite a bit of fun batting with Peter today, because he brought a lot of energy and he was very positive. I fed quite a bit off that, said Masakadza. The opener was fortunate to survive in the 11th over of the day, when he was caught at gully off Gabriel before replays revealed a no-ball. Masakadza was on 15 at the time. While Moor reached a patient half-century moments after tea, he was then bowled by offspinner Roston Chase to give the West Indies a welcome breakthrough.Masakadza went to three figures soon after, reaching his fifth Test century more than 16 years after recording his first one on debut against the same opponents. He had a bit of luck with the no-ball, but hes certainly played well. He hits the ball well and on wickets like these hes tough to contain as well, said West Indies coach Stuart Law.

Miller hits fastest T20 century as South Africa rout Bangladesh

Posted:

POTCHEFSTROOM (AFP) - David Miller smashed the fastest century in Twenty20 international cricket as South Africa outclassed Bangladesh by 83 runs in the second and final Twenty20 international at Senwes Park on Sunday.Millers 35-ball hundred propelled South Africa to 224 for four before Bangladesh were bowled out for 141, completing a clean-sweep for South Africa in two Tests, three one-day internationals and two T20 internationals. It was an extraordinary innings by Miller.Dropped on nought, he admitted: I felt pretty scratchy to be honest. In the first ten balls I could have been out twice. He had only scored 18 runs off 14 balls, then came an assault which yielded 82 runs off 21 balls to get to his century.Once I hit one or two I decided to keep going, he said. The previous fastest T20 international century was made off 45 balls by fellow South African Richard Levi against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2011/12.Five of Millers nine sixes came off the first five balls of the 19th over, bowled by promising all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin, who had dismissed AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla and conceded only 22 runs in his first three overs.Miller said he felt the rare feat of six sixes in an over was possible.I got to the fourth one and thought I might as well go for it. The fifth one came out nicely.Saifuddin pushed the last ball of his over wide of the off stump and Miller mistimed it for a single.Looking back I probably could have hit six off six, said Miller. The left-handers innings could have ended off the second ball he faced as he gloved an attempted pull off Rubel Hossain.Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim dived to his right and appeared to have caught the ball but lost control as he landed on the ground.Miller shared a 79-run fourth wicket partnership off 41 balls with Hashim Amla, who made 85 off 51 balls with 11 fours and a six.Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan admitted it had been a poor tour for his team.Today was a reflection of the series. We need to learn a lot from this. We have been terrific for the last two years at home but now it is time to get better overseas.Bangladesh made a good start, restricting South Africa to 37 for two in the first five overs.Shakib opened the bowling and sent down all his four overs in one spell, taking two for 22. But his teammates could not sustain the pressure in the face of Millers onslaught.Bangladesh scored 17 runs off the first over, bowled by Beuran Hendricks. But Imrul Kayes was run out in the second over and the tourists never threatened again.Miller was only the fourth South African to hit a century in 100 T20 internationals.

India prevail in thriller, clinch ODI series 2-1

Posted:

KANPUR (AFP) - Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah helped India pull off a thrilling six-run win over New Zealand in the third and final one-day international and clinch the series 2-1 on Sunday.Bumrah claimed three wickets and effected a crucial run out of dangerman Tom Latham in the 48th over to make the visitors falter in their 338-run chase at Kanpurs Green Park Stadium. The Kiwis, who looked like favourites with 35 runs required from the last 24 balls, ended on 331-7 despite Lathams 52-ball 65.Earlier sparkling centuries by opening batsman Rohit Sharma and skipper Virat Kohli steered India to 337-6 after being put in to bat.Sharma, who smashed 147 off 138 balls, and Kohli, who made 113, became the first pair in ODIs to record four double-century stands between them after putting together 230 runs for the second wicket. But it was the superb death bowling show by Bumrah that stood out in the big-scoring game. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also chipped in with two crucial wickets.Kiwi opener Colin Munro hit a quickfire 75 to give the visitors a blazing start despite losing his partner Martin Guptill for 10 to Bumrah.Munro put together a crucial 109-run partnership for the second wicket with skipper Kane Williamson, who made 64, as the pair took the attack to the opposition bowlers. The left-handed Munro, who smashed 8 fours and 3 sixes in his 62-ball knock, took a special liking to Indian pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose first five overs cost 51 runs.Chahal soon spun into action to send Munro and Williamson trudging back to the pavilion as New Zealand stumbled in their chase. It was then that the left-handed Latham got down to the grind, forming crucial partnerships with Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls and take the attack to the opposition.Kumar bowled Nicholls for 37 and Bumrah soon took over to dash New Zealands hopes of winning their first series on Indian soil. The action now shifts to the three Twenty20 internationals starting November 1 in New Delhi.

Iceland PM hit by Panama Leaks wins snap election

Posted:

REYKJAVIK (AFP) - Icelands conservative prime minister came out on top in a snap election despite a string of scandals, final results confirmed Sunday, but it remained unclear whether he will be able to form a viable coalition.PM Bjarni Benediktsson, 47, was accused named last year in the Panama Papers worldwide tax-evasion leaks. He has also been accused of wrongdoing during Icelands financial collapse in 2008.His Independence Party, however, beat its rivals in Saturdays election, according to final results published on Sunday, although no party came near to winning a majority in parliament. The Independence Party won 16 seats in the 63-seat parliament. Turnout was 81 percent. It could now take days, weeks or even months before Iceland has a new government in place as thorny coalition negotiations await.PM optimisticBenediktssons challenge comes from the Left Green Movement and its potential allies, the Social Democratic Alliance and the anti-establishment Pirate Party. The Left-Green Movement came in second with 11 seats, the Social Democratic Alliance with seven seats, and the Pirates with six seats.A total of eight parties won seats in parliament.Icelands President Gudni Johannesson has invited the leader of each of those parties to his residence on Monday. After meeting them individually, he will decide who gets the first mandate to try to assemble a government.Under the Icelandic system, the president, who holds a largely ceremonial role, usually tasks the leader of the biggest party with putting a government together.I am optimistic that we can form a government, Benediktsson told AFP after the polls closed on Saturday. The Independence Party lost five seats in parliament, according to Sundays results, but still came out on top -- apparently helped by Icelands thriving economy, fuelled by a flourishing tourism sector.Long talks aheadThe party has been involved in almost every government in Iceland since 1980.But growing public distrust of the elite has spawned several anti-establishment parties. These have splintered the political landscape and made it increasingly difficult to form a stable government.Benediktssons main rival, the Left-Green Movement won fewer votes than expected. It will need at least five allies to form a 32-seat majority to dethrone the conservatives. If it manages to do so, it would form only the second left-leaning government in Iceland since the countrys proclamation as a republic in 1944.Im worried that we may have to face up to the likelihood of long, drawn-out discussions and attempts to form a government, Arnar Thor Jonsson, a law professor at Reykjavik University, told AFP.Negotiations to form a coalition after the October 2016 election took three months. Some voters are tired. It was Icelands fourth election since 2008 and the second in a year.I hope we will have more stable politics now... but Im rather pessimistic about it, Einar Orn Thorlacius, a lawyer in Reykjavik, told AFP.Financial scandalsBenediktsson called Saturdays election after a junior member of his centre-right coalition pulled out over accusations that the prime minister had covered up his fathers recommendation letter for a convicted paedophile to help restore his honour.Benediktsson is a former lawyer and businessman whose family is one of the richest and most influential in Iceland. He has been implicated in several financial scandals and was mentioned in the Panama Papers -- leaked documents that exposed offshore tax havens. That scandal forced the resignation of then prime minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson.Gunnlaugsson made a come-back to lead one of the new parties that ran in Saturdays election.Analysts said the strongest possible government would be a three-party coalition comprising the two biggest parties, the Independence and the Left-Greens -- but their clashing ideologies make such a collaboration unlikely.Left-Green leader Katrin Jakobsdottir, 41, told AFP on election night she was keeping all options open.We have eight parties in parliament and right now there doesnt seem to be any obvious majority. All parties are open for discussion, she said. Her campaign promises included investing in social infrastructure and ensuring that Icelands economic prosperity reaches the health care and education sectors.

BASEL (AFP) - Home favourite Roger Federer claimed his eighth Swiss Indoors title on Sunday with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3 final defeat of Juan Martin del Potro. The 36-year-old fought back from a set down to win the 95th ATP title of his career, taking him clear above Ivan Lendl into second on the all-time list behind Jimmy Connors mark of 109.It was Federers first success against the Argentine in a Basel final, after the South American beat him in both 2012 and 2013.Federers victory boosts his hopes of taking the world number one spot from Rafael Nadal, with the regular season ending next week at the Paris Masters, followed by the year-ending ATP Finals in London. The 19-time Grand Slam champion has now won a Tour-leading seven titles this season after beating Nadal in the Shanghai Masters final a fortnight ago.Congratulations to Juan Martin, Federer said. Youve had a great run since the US Open (when he beat Federer in the quarter-finals) and before.I wish that I was able to play every week like you have, its going to be difficult for me in the future to do that.Del Potro will be playing for a fourth successive week in Paris after coming back earlier in the season from wrist problems, as he looks to snatch a late place for the eight-man event in London. The 29-year-old reached the Shanghai semi-finals and won in Stockholm earlier this month before his run in Basel.Federer lost only two sets during the week as he improved his head-to-head record to 17-6 over del Potro, with a third win in four matches against the former US Open champion in 2017.Its unbelievable how well Roger is playing, said del Potro. I hope to be in such shape when Im his age. But I doubt I will be.Federer now stands 49-4 overall this season. He will make a late decision whether to play the Paris Masters next week, depending on his fitness. The pair traded breaks in the opening two games, with an epic first set finally finding its way to a tie-break.Federer took a 3-0 lead but had no answer as del Potro won six straight points. The top seed saved two set points but went down on the third. The world number two battled hard in the second set, breaking in the final game to level the match as del Potro returned long.Federer broke for 3-1 in the decider and five games later put a forehand winner into the corner to bring up three match points.Del Potro saved the first but returned long as Federer wrapped up victory after two and a half hours of play.Roger was there playing high-level tennis for two and a half hours, said del Potro. He was better in key moments and he won.He returned well and broke me playing good tennis. I have little things to improve and I can learn from this match.Physically I was 100 percent today, I was close to winning, my body did not affect me in the final. I was running for all three sets and I fought until the last point.

Quickest T20I century made, Miller wears the crown

POTCHEFSTROOM (AFP) - David Miller thrashed the fastest century in Twenty20 international cricket as South Africa posted 224 for four in the second and final Twenty20 international against Bangladesh at Senwes Park on Sunday.Miller, who was dropped on nought, smacked 101 not out off 36 balls, reaching his century off 35 deliveries. He hit nine sixes, including five off successive balls from Mohammad Saifuddin, and seven fours.I was pretty scratchy to begin with, he admitted to SuperSport television as he left the field. But towards the back end it came out quite sweet. The left-handers innings could have ended off the second ball he faced as he gloved an attempted pull off Rubel Hossain. Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim dived to his right and appeared to have caught the ball but lost control as he landed on the ground.Miller shared a 79-run fourth wicket partnership off 41 balls with Hashim Amla, who made 85 off 51 balls with 11 fours and a six.Bangladesh, seeking to end a poor tour on a high note, made a good start, restricting South Africa to 37 for two in the first five overs. Captain Shakib Al Hasan opened the bowling and sent down all his four overs in one spell, taking two for 22.But his teammates could not sustain the pressure in the face of Millers onslaught. His five successive sixes came off the first five balls of the 19th over off Saifuddin after the 20-year-old medium-pacer had bowled impressively in his first three overs, taking the wickets of AB de Villiers and Amla and only conceding 22 runs. The previous fastest T20 international century was made off 45 balls by fellow South African Richard Levi against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2011/12.Miller was only the fourth South African to hit a century in 100 T20 internationals.

White House opposed vote on Israel 'annexation' bill: US official

JERUSALEM (AFP) - US President Donald Trumps administration opposed a planned vote on a controversial Israeli bill that critics say would amount to de facto annexation of Jewish settlements surrounding Jerusalem, a US official said Sunday.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed a vote on the bill by a ministerial committee that was scheduled to take place on Sunday, with an Israeli official saying diplomatic preparation was needed. It was a signal that Netanyahu was under pressure not to move forward from the White House, which has been seeking ways to restart long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.I think its fair to say that the US is discouraging actions that it believes will unduly distract the principals from focusing on the advancement of peace negotiations, a US official said on condition of anonymity. The Jerusalem expansion bill was considered by the administration to be one of those actions. The bill would absorb major Israeli settlements currently in the occupied West Bank into Jerusalem by enlarging the city limits. Its opponents argue that it is a step towards full unilateral annexation of the West Bank settlements affected -- a move that would be sure to spark international outrage. For the vast majority of the international community, the status of Israels settlements, built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state, is to be decided in peace negotiations. The bill has drawn harsh criticism from Palestinians and those hoping to salvage the two-state solution.Settlements affected are Maale Adumim, Beitar Illit, Efrat, Givat Zeev, and the Gush Etzion settlement bloc.Intelligence and Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, who has pushed for the bill, says it would add an additional 150,000 people to Jerusalems population, strengthening its Jewish majority.Israel occupied the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, in the Six-Day War of 1967. It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the international community. It sees the entire city as its indivisible capital, while the Palestinians want the eastern sector as the capital of their future state.Barack Obamas administrations was heavily critical of Israeli settlement activity, but Trump has been far less vocal on the issue. His ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is himself a supporter of Israeli settlements.
