Shadab's last-over six, Ashraf hat-trick seal Pakistan win

ABU DHABI (AFP) - All-rounder Shadab Khan hit a last over six to give Pakistan a sensational two-wicket win in the second Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Friday.Needing 12 off the final over, and eight from the last three balls, Shadab smashed Sri Lankan pacer Vikum Sanjaya for a six and then took a couple off the next delivery to help Pakistan chase down a modest 125-run target in 19.5 overs.Shadab remained not out with an eight-ball 16 with a six and a boundary to give Pakistan an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The final match in Lahore on Sunday remains of great significance as it will see Sri Lanka return to Pakistan eight years after the team was targeted in a deadly ambush in the same city in 2009.Earlier Friday, fast bowler Faheen Ashraf derailed the Sri Lankan innings with figures of 3-16 as he became the first Pakistan player to achieve a hat-trick in Twenty20 internationals. That gave Pakistan eight wickets in the space of just 20 balls for 18 runs as Sri Lanka ended on 124-9 in 20 overs.Danushka Gunathilaka top-scored with a 48-ball 51 with four boundaries and a six but Ashrafs feat stopped Sri Lanka from posting a challenge total.Sri Lankan skipper Thisara Perera then grabbed 3-24 in his four overs to leave Pakistan in a spot of bother, removing Shoaib Malik for nine with the total at 55-4.Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed (28) and Mohammad Hafeez (19) added 39 for the fifth wicket to bring Pakistan within 31 runs of victory. But when Hafeez and Ahmed fell, Pakistan still needed 21 off 14 balls which Shadab made possible.Sri Lanka had needed early wickets and they were lucky to get Fakhar Zaman (11) run out, Ahmed Shehzad (27) and Babar Azam for one.In that crunch situation, on this difficult pitch, that shot was a very difficult shot by Shadab, said Ahmed. Our youngsters are putting up big performances and Ashraf was outstanding as bowler.Perera said his team did put up a good fight. As a captain, Im really proud of them and a win was not too far away, said Perera. Our set batsmen need to contribute, if we take the first two batters, our plan is that they have to play till the 15th over.It was Ashraf who sparkled in the first half.Ashraf dismissed Isuru Udana (six), Mahela Udawatte and Dasun Shanaka off successive deliveries to become the sixth bowler to register a Twenty20 hat-trick.Australias Brett Lee was the first to achieve a hat-trick in the shortest format with his feat coming against Bangladesh at Cape Town in 2007.New Zealands Jacob Oram and Tim Southee and Sri Lankan duo Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga were the others to achieve a Twenty20 hat-trick.Sri Lanka, sent into bat for the second match in succession, got off to a solid start with openers Gunathilaka and Dilshan Munaweear put on 43 for the opening wicket.Munaweera was dismissed for 19 before Sadeera Samarawickrama (31-ball 33) added 63 for the second wicket with Gunathilaka as Sri Lanka looked set for a 150-plus total with 106-1 in 16.1 overs. But Sadeera, Seekkuge Prasanna and Perera were run outs before Ashraf came into his own. This is only the second time a team has taken eight wickets in the last four overs in a T20. Pakistan did the same against Australia in the 2010 World Twenty20.

Sri Lanka's attack survivors bring top-level cricket back to Pakistan

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Tens of thousands of security will be deployed in Lahore on Sunday when Sri Lanka become the first major cricket team to visit Pakistan since they were targeted in a deadly ambush in 2009 -- with attack survivors among those returning to the scene.Several Sri Lankan players and officials, including their head coach, have opted out of the Twenty20 fixture, after some voiced concern about security following ongoing militant attacks. But Asanka Gurusinha and Hashan Tillakaratne, who came under gunfire in 2009 and are now Sri Lankas team manager and batting coach, will be with the squad as it is shuttled in and out of Lahores Gaddafi Stadium under heavy guard.Pakistans Ahsan Raza, a reserve umpire in 2009 who was among those shot -- and needed emergency surgery to repair a collapsed lung and damaged liver -- will also be on the field.Eight people were killed and eight wounded in the March 3, 2009 attack on Sri Lankas bus convoy near the Gaddafi Stadium, an incident which brought cricket tours to Pakistan screeching to a halt.Eight years later, Sri Lanka will become the first top cricket nation to play in Pakistan since the incident, accelerating a gradual resumption of international fixtures as security improves.Sundays game, the third and final Twenty20 -- with the other two played in UAE -- comes after Lahore also hosted this years Pakistan Super League final and a one-off fixture between Pakistan and a World XI last month.Raza was wounded when Pakistani Taliban militants targeted a bus carrying officials, killing the driver. Another buss driver was hailed as a hero after shepherding the players to safety under a hail of bullets. Its a great honour that I will be umpiring in the match which is bringing Sri Lanka back to Lahore, he told AFP.They have set their every fear aside... their tour will have a great impact on the revival of cricket in Pakistan.Sundays Twenty20 international is being hailed as a brave decision by Sri Lanka and a milestone for Pakistan as it attempts to end its sporting isolation.Thousands of security personnel will guard routes to the stadium, and air surveillance and intelligence monitoring is also in place as Pakistan rolls out head-of-state level measures.Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi called it a historic moment, pointing out that a generation of fans in the cricket-mad country have grown up without seeing any international games in their home stadiums. Our stadiums have remained empty. Now all that is poised to change, for the better... I foresee a full fledged restoration in the next two years, he told AFP.PCB officials are already setting their sights on bringing the West Indies to Pakistan for three T20 internationals next month. But Sri Lankas visit was not fully backed by its players: regular skipper Upul Tharanga, Lasith Malinga, Niroshan Dickwella, Dushmantha Chamera, and Akila Dananjaya all pulled out, as did their South African head coach Nic Pothas and physiotherapist Nirmalan Thanabalasingham.Suranga Lakmal, who still carries the splinter from a bullet wound in his leg, and fellow 2009 survivor Chamara Kapugedara also stayed away.Stand-in skipper Thisara Perera, who played in Lahore last month as part of the World XI team, praised the security arrangements and said he had no concerns about safety.I am really satisfied with the security, so no problems there, he told AFP.Fans are also applauding Sri Lankas decision to return to Lahore, and this week many headed out to buy last-minute tickets for Sundays game.I am very happy really, as I have purchased tickets for me and my family members, one woman said in Lahores upscale Gulberg neighbourhood. The countrys most famous supporter, Sufi Jalil, fondly known as Chacha Cricket (Uncle Cricket), who aims to attend every Pakistan match regardless of the venue, was himself on the way to Gaddafi Stadium when the attack took place in 2009.They are welcome, he said of Sri Lanka. What happened in the past is behind us, this match will be a new beginning and we are all united in this cause.

Root eager to avenge Australia heartache

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Joe Root is determined to show Australia just how good he is during the upcoming Ashes series as he seeks to atone for a miserable first tour Down Under.Root is now one of the worlds leading batsmen, having scored more than 5,000 runs in 60 Test at an average of 53.76 including 13 hundreds. But his previous Ashes tour, in 2013/14, ended with him being dropped for the Sydney finale after hed managed a meagre 192 runs in four previous Tests at a lowly average of 27.42.England lost that series 5-0 under former captain Alastair Cook and Roots then aim was simply to regain his place rather than think about leading the side. You dont (think about becoming captain) as a 22-year-old lad being left out for the first time, said Root. All you want to do is go back to your county or your next opportunity to play, and prove everyone wrong.Thankfully I did that, the 26-year-old Yorkshireman added ahead of his first tour as England captain. That drive is still there within me, and Im desperate to go out there and have a better tour than last time I was there.Meanwhile Root dismissed suggestions England would retreat to the safety of their hotel rooms after an incident that means they could be without Ben Stokes for the whole tour.Stokes, Englands vice-captain, was suspended from international duty following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September. The all-rounder remains under investigation after being arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and will not fly out with the rest of the England squad on Saturday. But Stokes, who has a broken finger, is still a member of the tour squad as he and England wait to discover if the 26-year-old will face criminal charges. The fall-out has led to questions over whether England should abandon the relaxed approach to off-field discipline favoured by their Australian coach Trevor Bayliss. But Root believes a regular social life can aid Englands chances of retaining the Ashes in a five-match series that starts with the first Test at Brisbane commencing November 23.Asked by AFP if there was danger in England being cooped up, Root replied: At no point did we say they would be. That would be a negative way to go about touring a great country. Its really important to enjoy the downtime we do get and enjoy the whole nature of touring Australia -- the atmosphere of the grounds, the nature of the people around the grounds and when you go out for food the banter that might be flying around and embrace it.You dont get many opportunities to go and play in an Ashes series in Australia, and it is something you want to look back on and say you approached it in the right way and gave yourself the best chance to be successful and hopefully come away with some fantastic memories.Root said England had to work on the assumption Stokes would miss the entire tour. That would be a huge blow to Englands chances given Stokess three-in-one role of aggressive middle-order batsman, lively fourth seamer and superb close-catcher.I think weve got to plan as if hes not going to be there for the whole series, Root said.Root and Stokes have been mates since they played representative youth cricket, with the England skipper attending his deputys recent wedding. But Root was tight-lipped when he felt let down by the disruption his old friend had caused to Englands Ashes plans.Thats between me and Ben, being brutally honest, he added. It is disappointing that hes not going to be on the trip, but you have to move on and move forward as a team.Ben offers a lot to the team, but its an opportunity for other guys to stand up in a difficult situation.A lot of the time people do surprise themselves and surprise you, and are capable of more than what they might even think themselves. This is one of those occasions.

Kremlin condemns hostility as Trump heads toward new Russia sanctions

Posted:

(Web Desk)–The Russian government accused the U.S. of displaying “hostility” on Friday as the Trump administration took the first step towards imposing new sanctions for Russia’s interference in the 2016 US election. In early August, Trump signed into law, a measure which would target individuals and firms with links to Russian defence and intelligence agencies.Under the law, companies that “knowingly engage in a significant transaction” with people or firms on the list could be subject to U.S. sanctions after Jan. 28.The law gave the administration until Oct. 1 to produce a list, and the administration has been under mounting pressure from Congress after missing that deadline. Late Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson authorized officials to release the list to key members of Congress. On Friday, Dimitry Peskov, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, told reporters on a conference call that the new sanctions had “echoes of hostility” in them. “These are echoes of unfriendly signs, to be precise, even hostility against our country,” Peskov said. The exchange provided further evidence of the deteriorated state of relations between Russia and the U.S. Despite initial celebrations in Russian political circles after President Trump’s election, the Kremlin has been disappointed by the lack of improvement in Moscow-Washington relations.Peskov pointed the finger at Washington for not doing its part, saying that while Russia was ready for better ties, Washington seemed “not steady.” “However, we will be patient and continue to be committed to a constructive approach,” he added. The sanctions list, which has not been made public, covers more than two dozen Russian defense industry companies, including the Kalashnikov Group, the maker of the AK-47 automatic rifle.Igor Pshenichnikov, an expert at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, told the Russian news agency TASS that the inclusion of so many defense industry companies indicated that the U.S. was “making every possible effort to take over the global arms market.”Implementing the new sanctions could present complicated issues. Turkey, a NATO ally, plans to buy an anti-aircraft defense system from Russia. Saudi Arabia has been negotiating a similar purchase. Such purchases could potentially put both countries at risk of violating the new rules.

FIFA fails to take decision in Israel-Palestinian dispute

Posted:

KOLKATA (AFP) - FIFAs leadership refused Friday to intervene in a dispute between Israel and the Palestinians over football in the occupied territories, opening up a likely confrontation at the international sports tribunal. The world bodys ruling council declined to adopt any of three possible actions recommended by an international commission which spent more than two years looking at the long-running battle. The FIFA Council said it must remain neutral with regard to political matters in line with the world bodys statutes. The Palestinian football association had demanded FIFA sanctions over six teams playing in the Israeli league which are based in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.FIFA president Gianni Infantino called the dispute exceptionally complex because of the political situation in the Middle East.It involved issues which are there since 10,000 years and have not been solved yet and football is not going to solve them either I am afraid, he told a press conference. He added that any interference in the status quo in these territories, in the whole area, with regard to football, would have or could have an aggravating effect. The Palestinians complain that their players face harassment and even arrest by Israel when trying to move between the occupied West Bank and Gaza and that some have been prevented from travelling to international tournaments. The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said Israel had breached FIFA statutes which state that a member countrys teams cannot play matches on the territory of another association without permission.Israel said FIFA should stay out as there are no recognised frontiers for a Palestinian state.FIFA in 2015 appointed a commission led by Tokyo Sexwale, a South African businessman and politician, to look into the complaints.Sexwale told AFP there has been marked progress in conditions in the past two years but that Palestinian football has been left in limbo.I have an opinion on whether the council took the right decision but for the moment it is irrelevant, he said. The FIFA Council in an extraordinary move refused to let the world bodys annual congress in May take a decision on Sexwales report and said it would choose the action. Its final decision rejected all the options put forward by Sexwale however. However the Palestinian association has already gone to the Court of Arbitration for Sport which is expected to give a ruling in January.Palestinian Football Association chief Jibril Rajoub said that the FIFA Councils decision is taken in violation of its own statutes, it is a violation of international law and international humanitarian law.Israels Minister of Interior Security Gilad Erdan called the FIFA decision a great victory. The attempt of the instigator of terrorism Jibril Rajoub to use sports as a political weapon against Israel has failed and we will continue to work to thwart the boycott initiatives of the Palestinians. The CAS could force FIFA to hold a vote at its next congress on the Palestinian demands.Infantino said that FIFA would follow any CAS decision.

iPhone X pre-orders are 'off the charts', says Apple

Posted:

(Reuters) - Apple Inc quashed any concern of muted demand for its iPhone X on Friday, saying pre-orders for the 10th anniversary phone were “off the charts”.The company’s shares, which have fallen steadily since it announced in early September it would launch two iPhones within two months, rose nearly 3 percent in response.Pre-orders for the much-anticipated 10th anniversary phone started from 12.01 am PT (0701 GMT) on Friday.“We can see from the initial response, customer demand is off the charts,” an Apple spokeswoman told Reuters.“We’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into the hands of every customer who wants one, as quickly as possible.”The company’s website showed delivery times pushed out to five to six weeks for the phone, compared to an initial plan of Nov. 3.IPhone X’s launch follows weeks of concerns among analysts about the production of the new phone, which for the first time includes new facial identification software to replace the fingerprint used on previous phones.Analysts have cautioned that production of the phone was below target, due to difficulties in producing the TrueDepth camera system, which houses sophisticated cameras and sensors making it possible to unlock the phone using Face ID.Wireless carriers in the United States and Canada have reported slow third-quarter customer upgrades. While some expect a pickup after the iPhone X goes on sale in November, others cautioned that phone’s $999 price tag could weigh on demand.Major promotions on the iPhone X from U.S. carriers have yet to materialize, and in some cases, the offers have been even less generous than what was available for the iPhone 8, said Walter Piecyk, an analyst at BTIG in a research note on Thursday. He noted that Sprint Corp’s iPhone X promotion of $350 in savings for trading in an eligible device was the most aggressive but still lower than what it offered for last year’s launch of the iPhone 7.Shares of Apple were up 2.9 percent at $161.96 in morning trading in New York.
