Imam hits debut ton in Pakistan series-clinching win

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Young opener Imam-ul-Haq, nephew of Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq, smashed a hundred on debut to guide his side to a seven-wicket win in the third one-day international against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.Seamer Hasan Ali became the quickest bowler to reach 50 ODI wickets for Pakistan as his 5-34 saw Sri Lanka bowled out for 208 in 48.2 overs at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.Imam, whose uncle Inzamam is now a Pakistan selector, became only the second batsman from his country and 13th overall to score a hundred on ODI debut before he finally fell for 100 off 125 balls. The 21-year-old hit two sixes and five fours as the nominal hosts wrapped up the series with two matches to spare.Saleem Elahi was the only other Pakistani to hit a debut hundred, also against Sri Lanka at Gujranwala in 1995.But Imam could have missed that milestone as he was reprieved on 89, having been given out caught behind by Niroshan Dickwella off Lahiru Gamage. As he was walking back, television umpire Richard Kettleborough found the ball had touched the ground before reaching wicketkeeper Dickwellas gloves.A relieved Imam returned to the crease and completed his hundred.Mohammad Hafeez remained not out on 34, scoring the winning single.Imam said his heart was in his mouth when he was given out.I thought I had missed a great chance of scoring a hundred, said Imam, who was also Pakistans top run-scorer when they reached the 2014 Under-19 World Cup final in the United Arab Emirates. But Hafeez told me to wait as the ball had touched the ground, so I am lucky and proud to have scored a hundred on my debut and that too with a record.Pakistan hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the first match by 83 runs in Dubai and a 32-run victory in the second in Abu Dhabi on Monday. The remaining games are in Sharjah on Friday and Monday. With a low target to chase, Imam made a solid start alongside Fakhar Zaman in an opening stand of 78.Zaman fell for 29, stumped by Dickwella off spinner Jeffrey Vandersay while Babar Zaman was bowled by Gamage for 30.Sri Lanka, who suffered their ninth straight ODI defeat, were loose with the bat.Hasan, 23, was ably assisted by leg-spinner Shadab Khan (2-37) as Sri Lanka, who won the toss and batted, lost their last nine wickets for only 106 runs.Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga (61) and Dickwella (18) put on 59 for the first wicket, but from 102-1 in the 26th over their innings was derailed by Pakistans bowlers.Shadab, man-of-the-match for his 52 not out and 3-47 in the second game on Monday, had Dinesh Chandimal (19) leg-before and Tharanga caught in the deep.Tharanga, who hit a brilliant 112 not out in the previous match, hit five boundaries during his 80-ball knock.Hasan, who had given Pakistan the early breakthrough with Dickwellas wicket, removed Chamara Kapugedera (18), Milinda Siriwardana (two) and Vandersay (nought) to complete 50 wickets in his 24th ODI.The previous record was held by legendary paceman Waqar Younis, who took 27 ODIs to reach the mark. Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis holds the overall record of 19 matches.Hasans previous best bowling figures were 5-38 against the West Indies in Guyana earlier this year.Lahiru Thirimanne (28) and Thisara Perera (38) took Sri Lanka past the 200 mark.

Brilliant De Villiers blows away Bangladesh

Posted:

PAARL (AFP) - AB de Villiers blasted a career-best 176 to set up a series-clinching 104-run win for South Africa in the second one-day international against Bangladesh at Boland Park on Wednesday.South Africa posted an imposing 353 for six after being sent in to bat, while Bangladesh made a spirited start to their response before being bowled out for 249.De Villiers raced to his 25th one-day international century off 68 balls with ten fours and a six. He added another five fours and six sixes off the next 36 deliveries in a display of dazzling footwork, precise placement and some audacious strokes, particularly after he reached his century.Even so, De Villiers said he felt quite nervous at the start of his first international innings in four months. But he said batting partner Hashim Amla was a calming influence as he embarked on a sensational 104-ball innings which included 15 fours and seven sixes.Already the holder of the records for the fastest 50, 100 and 150, De Villiers was on target to beat Chris Gayles record of 138 balls for the fastest one-day international double century before he hit a low full toss from Rubel Hossain to deep midwicket with 14 balls remaining in the innings. It did cross my mind, he said of the possible double century, but thats not something I play for. It was all about how many balls I could face at the end of the innings to get as many runs as I could for the team. If it all worked out I would have got there but Im happy with the 176.The ease with which De Villiers found the boundary was in complete contrast to his teammates, who managed to hit only five fours and a six between them, struggling to time the ball as it rose slowly off the surface, while the outfield was unusually slow after three days of rain.De Villiers dominated stands of 136 off 111 balls for the third wicket with Hashim Amla (85) and 111 off 70 balls for the fourth wicket with JP Duminy (30).I had a net in Kimberley, one of the best nets Ive ever had, so I could feel something good was coming, said De Villiers, who wasnt required to bat during South Africas ten-wicket win in the first one-day international at Kimberley on Sunday.Mashrafe Mortazas decision to bowl first was justified as there was some early movement for his seam bowlers - but he and his fellow new ball bowlers were unable to separate the in-form pair of Quinton de Kock and Amla until they had put on 90 for the first wicket. Then Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets in three balls, which brought De Villiers to the crease. Shakib bowled really well but AB came in and took the game away from us. Hes a destroyer, said Mortaza.Rubel Hossain took three wickets in his last two overs to finish with four for 62.Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes put on 44 off 46 balls for Bangladeshs first wicket, with Kayes going on to make 68 off 77 balls. Mushfiqur Rahim followed up his century in the first match with 60 off 70 balls. Kayes was third out with the total on 162 in the 29th over and the innings lost momentum.Medium-pacer Andile Phehlukwayo had career-best figures of four for 40.South African captain Faf du Plessis praised what he termed an ABD special. He said with the series won, there would definitely be some changes to give fringe players an opportunity in the third and final match in East London on Sunday.

Concrete Kuldeep cements place in Indian attack

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indias rising star, spinner Kuldeep Yadav, believes bowling on concrete has made him battle-ready for any surface that a rival cricket power can lay out for him.Kuldeep, who claimed a hat-trick in his countrys triumphant one-day series against Australia, has become a household name at 22 and with just two Tests and 11 one-day internationals to his name.He played a big part in Indias 4-1 win over Australia, but many believe the real test will come in tours of South Africa and England next year.Ahead of Indias series against New Zealand, starting Sunday, Kuldeep told AFP in an interview that his varied left-arm wrist spin will be a weapon on any track. It doesnt matter to me where I am playing because since my childhood I have bowled on cemented wickets. So if you can turn the ball on concrete then you can spin it anywhere, Kuldeep said.If you have skill, good variation and are beating the batsmen in the air then you can find success anywhere, added Kuldeep, who hails from the northern city of Kanpur.Kuldeep started as a pace bowler but at the age of nine he switched to wrist spin at his coachs insistence.I started my career in 2004 as a fast bowler. After practising for a few months my coach advised me to switch to spin.I did not like it at the start, but the first ball I bowled was wrist spin and I had no idea what it was. So, he must have thought I have a talent and he worked on it.Initially it was tough but when I got down to it, the hard work paid off.Kuldeep has made his mark in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 competition with the Kolkata Knight Riders. But his rise as a top-class spinner has been instrumental in India becoming top of the world Test and one-day rankings. The latest addition to Indias rich spin tradition made an instant impact with four wickets in his debut Test against Australia in Dharamsala this year.He impressed in Sri Lanka in September and then bamboozled Australian batsmen, including star opener David Warner, with his wrist spin, winning many more fans.Australia are a good team and compared to other sides always play dominating cricket. Their batsmen dont allow you to settle and just want to dominate a bowler, Kuldeep said.Australia are a dangerous side because they play freely and put you under pressure. I played in the West Indies and then in Sri Lanka but they dont play as attacking as the Aussies.Kuldeep grew up watching videos of spin legend Shane Warne and still calls the Aussie great his reference point in learning the rare art.Warne recently compared Kuldeep to Pakistans established Test spinner Yasir Shah, saying the Indian can become the best leg-spinner if he remains patient. Its great to be compared to a top spinner like Yasir Shah. Its heartening to see praise coming from my idol. It reassures my belief in my talent, said Kuldeep. It makes me happy that he (Warne) backs me and I feel there is some more talent in me.Kuldeep has formed a partnership with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and they are providing competition for veterans Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. You cannot replace anyone. Ashwin and Jaddu bhai are the number one and number two spinners of India and I will always look up to learn from them, Kuldeep said of his seniors. They have done extremely well in Test, ODI and T20 cricket. We are very young and have to play much more cricket to even get close to them, he added.Kuldeep insisted that individual success comes out of the teams hard work and praised skipper Virat Kohli for nurturing young talent. It has been a team effort and especially the way Virat Kohli has led the team and backed us youngsters. It has made all the difference and been the biggest factor for our success, he said.I dont plan much. I just think that every game is important and the more I keep performing, the better my chances of enjoying a long run with team India.

No Brexit breakthrough coming at summit: EU's Tusk

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - EU President Donald Tusk on Wednesday warned Britain not to expect any breakthrough in Brexit negotiations at a European summit this week, saying London needed to come up with more concrete proposals.Leaders of the other 27 EU members meeting in Brussels on Thursday and Friday are set to postpone until at least December a decision on whether enough progress has been made in talks to move on to discussing Britain and the EUs future relationship.Fears are growing that Britain may fail to strike a withdrawal agreement before its formal departure on March 29, 2019 and London had hoped the summit -- where Prime Minister Theresa May will plead her case at a working dinner -- might clear the logjam.I dont expect any kind of breakthrough tomorrow -- we have to work really hard in between October and December to finalise this so-called first phase and to start our negotiations on our future relations with the UK, Tusk said.Five rounds of talks have made some progress but major differences remain on the key issues of citizens rights, the future of the Irish border after Brexit and in particular how much Britain will pay in to EU budgets as it leaves the bloc.Britain wants Brussels to acknowledge the progress made in talks, particularly since Mays speech in Florence last month in which she pledged that no other country would have to pay more into the EU or receive less from it as a result of Brexit. But EU leaders and officials insist that London needs to translate the goodwill into detailed commitments.I am absolutely sure that its still possible to achieve this final first phase in December but for this we need more concrete proposals from the British side to be honest, Tusk said.PeanutsUnderlining the increasingly tense atmosphere around the talks, European Parliament president Antonio Tajani ignited a fresh row late on Tuesday when he derided Britains 20 billion euro offer on the financial settlement as peanuts.I have never seen 20 billion peanuts in my life, Tusk joked when asked about Tajanis comment.Tajanis comments came on the same day that the British and EU chief negotiators clashed over a claim by London that Brussels is deliberately stalling the divorce haggling to extract more cash.A German government official struck a more positive note, highlighting progress on the issue of citizens rights and suggesting there could be room for flexibility on the thorny question of Britains exit bill.If you look at the dimension of the European-British relations, then the financial questions may not be as important as they are made now, the official said. The major issues of the future between Great Britain and the European Union outweigh the current dispute about finances. And I believe everyone is aware of that and that is why we are optimistic that we are going to find a solution there -- along with a bit of drama.

Gunman on loose after Maryland shooting kills three

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A police manhunt was underway Wednesday for a gunman who stormed a suburban Maryland business park, killing three people and injuring two others before escaping. With the shooter at large several area schools were placed on lockdown, officials said, while the nearby set of popular Netflix show House of Cards was also reportedly locked down. The suspect, 37-year-old Radee Prince, was associated with the granite business in Edgewood, northeast of Baltimore, where the shootings took place according to Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler. This does appear to be a targeted attack, limited to that business, Gahler said as he confirmed there were three dead and two other victims who were transported to trauma centers in serious condition.Police were investigating Princes connection with the business, known as Advanced Granite Solutions. All five victims were employees of the business, Gahler said. While the sheriff told reporters that investigators do not believe anyone else was involved, theres an individual out there on the loose who committed one of the most heinous acts weve ever seen in our county. We certainly consider him armed and dangerous, he said.Variety magazine reported that the set of House of Cards, which is partly filmed in Maryland, was placed on lockdown while police searched for the shooter. The executive producer of the series, Dana Brunetti, addressed the incident in a Facebook post, and criticized cable networks for not immediately reporting it.Shooting near House of Cards set, Brunetti wrote. I turn on the news to see what is happening, and guess what theyre covering? Not the 5 dead and 3 wounded while gunman is still on the loose. Some of the school lockdowns were later lifted, according to Harford County Public Schools. The incident was the latest mass shooting in a country where such killings have become commonplace. On October 1, a gunman in an upper-floor casino hotel room opened fire on concert-goers in Las Vegas, killing 58 and wounding more than 500 in the deadliest shooting in recent US history. To date in 2017 there have been 285 mass shootings -- defined as four or more people shot or killed, not including the shooter -- in the United States, or nearly one per day.

Britain's Big Ben to bang again but not on time

LONDON: (AFP) - Big Ben, the bell inside Londons iconic clock tower which has been silent since August, will chime again on key upcoming dates but the timing might be a bit off kilter, Britains parliament said on Wednesday. The bell, housed in the Elizabeth Tower, has been off since a four-year renovation of the building began. It will be reconnected to sound for Armistice Day, on November 11, and Remembrance Sunday the following day, and throughout the Christmas holiday season. It has always been the intention throughout the Elizabeth Tower conservation works for Big Ben to ring out for important national events, and whenever we safely can without disruption to the refurbishment project, a statement said. The bell in the famous 315-foot (96-metre) tower which looms over Britains Houses of Parliament in Westminster will be reconnected in advance of the occasions. It will start chiming on the hour from 9am on November 9 until 1pm on November 12, and from 9am on December 23 until 1pm on January 1, 2018.But parliamentary authorities said they expected slight inaccuracies after an 11-week break. The structure is undergoing much-needed renovations, which started on August 21 and could end up costing as much as £61 million ($80 million, EUR68 million). The work is repairing the clock faces and mechanism, cracks in the towers masonry and corrosion in the roof, as well as restoring the edging around the clock faces to its original 19th-century colour.A lift will also be installed as an alternative to the steps up the tower, and the lights illuminating the clock will be replaced by low-energy LEDs.Completed in neo-Gothic style in 1856 by parliament architect Augustus Pugin, the tower has suffered from considerable degradation over time, and now even leans 46 centimetres (18 inches) off the vertical. However, silencing Big Ben -- whose chimes feature on British television and radio news bulletins -- has proved contentious, sparking protests including from Prime Minister Theresa May.

Ex-Uruguay defender Lopez named Cagliari coach

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Uruguayan Diego Lopez has been appointed coach of Serie A strugglers Cagliari in place of the sacked Massimo Rastelli, the club said on Wednesday. The 43-year-old Lopez played for the club for 12 seasons from 1998 to 2010, and previously coached the Sardinian outfit from 2013 to 2014, with a spell also in charge of the youth teams.Lopez -- who also briefly coached Palermo in Serie A last season and Bologna when they were in the second division -- signed a contract until June 2019, the club said.Cagliari are currently 14th in Serie A after four straight defeats, most recently losing 3-2 at home against Genoa.Rastelli, 48, took over in the 2015-2016 season, guiding Cagliari into the Italian top flight after winning Serie B in 2016.Last season the club finished 11th but this term are struggling with just two wins in eight games, against relegation rivals Crotone and SPAL.Rastelli was the first Serie A coach sacked this season with coaching assistants Nicola Legrottaglie and Dario Rossi also dismissed in the clearout.

US wages fail to rise despite 'widespread' labour scarcity: Fed

Posted:

WASHINGTON: (AFP) - Wages for American workers remain stubbornly low despite widespread labour shortages, according to a US Federal Reserve survey published Wednesday.Growth in the worlds largest economy also continued between September and early October at a pace split between modest and moderate while temporary disruptions from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma persisted, according to the periodic Fed survey known as the Beige Book. The Fed survey, which summarized anecdotal reports from business contacts on nationwide economic conditions, showed a continuing conundrum for central bankers as steadfast economic growth and job creation fail to stir pay raises and inflation -- circumstances which call the pace of interest rate hikes into question. Many districts noted that employers were having difficulty finding qualified workers, the report said. Despite widespread labour tightness, the majority of districts noted only modest to moderate wage pressures.Fed members are sharply divided over the dangers of inflation and a vocal minority argue the central bank should hold off raising interest rates until signs of inflation occur. The Feds preferred inflation measure, the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, fell to 1.3 percent in August, when volatile food and fuel prices are excluded, and has remained below the Feds two percent target for more than five years.Bonuses, over-timeOther advanced economies report similar conditions, with Japanese and European central bank chiefs portraying a more-or-less inflation-free recovery since the Great Recession of 2008.Still, the Fed members as a group have said they expect price pressures to kick in soon and have forecast a final hike in 2013 and three more in 2018. Those favoring rate hikes worry that raising rates too slowly could force the Fed to jack them up suddenly in the future, harming the economy -- or too much cheap money could favor excessive risk-taking on financial markets, with Wall Street already at dizzying heights.Acute labour shortages have cropped up in construction, which restrains home building, transportation and skilled manufacturing as well as health care and services industries, according to the report. These shortages were also restraining business growth, the survey said. Firms in several districts reported that scarcity of labour, particularly related to construction, would be exacerbated by hurricane recovery efforts. While pay checks grew in some sectors, such as transportation and construction, employers were resorting to other means of attracting scarce workers.Growing use of sign-on bonuses, over-time and other non-wage efforts to attract and retain workers were also reported.Despite employer demand in the Minneapolis region, according to the report, job growth suffered from a lack of available workers. In the Richmond Fed area, business contacts said jobs markets strengthened and wage pressures broadened, while price rose moderately, in part due to the supply chain disruptions from the hurricanes.
