In Las Vegas, shooting tragedy met with goodwill from strangers

Posted:

LAS VEGAS (AFP) - Curtis Leoni and Robin Davis had a prime spot at Las Vegass Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival, standing just 100 feet from the stage, the Mandalay Bay Hotel towering over them. But not long after the final act began, the pair heard a volley of shots and, as Davis puts it, our lives changed forever. But we are some of the fortunate ones, she says. Theres a lot of people that didnt get to go home.Leoni, a policeman from Colorado, was hit in the thigh and now hopes to one day walk normally, while Davis will now live with shrapnel embedded in her leg. When shots first rang out Leoni immediately recognized it as a real gunshot and warned Davis to stay standing for risk of being trampled to death. After the second round of fire the band stopped and the couple fled, seeking shelter.Following the third discharge, Leoni fell, struck by a bullet in the right thigh. Upon touching his leg the policemans hand was covered in blood. He feared for his femoral artery; had it been hit, I was gonna die in about two minutes, he says.People got up and started running, Leoni told AFP. The shots started back up and we were stuck in the middle of nowhere and I couldnt get up, and I could hear the shots flying all around us, and there was nothing we could do.We just sat there, hoping that we werent going to get killed, that we werent going to die.The shooting finally stopped and Davis called for help, wrapping the wound with a tourniquet crafted with the strap of her bag.Several people ultimately carried Leoni to a red pick-up, and he was transported to the hospital along with 10 others.- Good Samaritans -The cop hailing from Denver escaped the grisly scene thanks to that good Samaritan driver, who made three trips evacuating the wounded that night.Since that harrowing night Leoni -- who after 23 years in the force is no stranger to compartmentalizing his feelings -- says his most marked emotion remains anger.Im mad at that guy. Why would you do something like that? he says from his hospital room. We were there to have a good time and something like this happens. And our lives are changed forever, for no reason and that really makes me angry.Im not used to being the victim, he continues. My job is to help people in these situations, and I could do nothing. Absolutely nothing.Leoni is still suffering from nerve damage and is unable to move his right foot. Doctors say feeling may come back, but nothing is certain.Despite the horrors of Sundays massacre in Las Vegas -- which left 58 dead and some 500 wounded to become the worst mass shooting in recent US history -- profound friendships rose from the ashes. The driver of the pick-up checked in to see if Leoni had been released, and he met the couple whose lives he touched mid-week.We have a new friend for life, Davis said. That kind of was a summary of what the night turned out to be. Were not going to talk about the person who did this horrific thing. Were going to talk about the people that stood up for each other.Leoni, who is due to leave the hospital Friday, insists that he adores Vegas despite having narrowly escaped a tragic end there.I mustve come 100 times, he says of the city famous for gambling and vice, where he had been planning to visit again with some buddies come February.Well see if theres a 101st.

Terrorists receiving funds from across the border: Maleeha Lodhi

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (APP): A top Pakistani diplomat has told the United Nations that Pakistan has “turned the tide” against terrorism through a series of determined actions that led to the destruction of terrorist infrastructures and bases in its tribal areas and along the Pak-Afghan border region.“Terrorism in Pakistan is an unfortunate by product of the political and geo-strategic developments and foreign interventions in our neighborhood over the past 40 years,” Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the U.N., told the UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, which deals with legal matters.Speaking in a debate on terrorism, Ambassador Lodhi highlighted measures such as a dedicated counter “terrorism force, reform of the criminal justice system, and an across the-board military campaign” the largest anti-terrorism operation anywhere in the world, to destroy terrorist infrastructures and bases in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region and Pakistani tribal areas.Pakistan, she said, had lost over 27,000 citizens and law enforcement personnel to this scourge, with many more injured and maimed for life as well as economic losses of over US$120 billion. “But neither the human nor financial losses have diminished my country’s commitment to fight this menace. It has only reinforced our will to fight until the last terrorist is eliminated from our soil.” Success of its counter-terrorism operations had resulted in the sharpreduction of terrorist activities across Pakistan over the past two years, she said. Still terrorism continues to posed a challenge, but its nature has changed.“The threat that we face today is primarily supported and financed from outside our borders,” the Pakistani envoy pointed out. “We are confident that we will be able to defeat these forces too.” Ambassador Lodhi reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the OIC position on aconsensus-based comprehensive convention on international terrorism. The proposed convention must be consistent with international humanitarian law and must clearly differentiate between acts of terrorism and the legitimate struggles for self determination of people living under foreign occupation.“The malicious attempts by those who seek to manipulate theinternational consensus against terrorism to justify the suppression of people struggling for their right to self-determination must never be permitted to succeed,” she said in an obvious reference to continuing persecution of people in Kashmir and Palestine. At the same time, she called for urgent and focused attention to addressing the festering disputes and unresolved conflicts, unlawful use of force, aggression, foreign occupation and denial of the right to self-determination. “Political and economic injustice fuels animosities, breeds hostility and often also leads to violent reactions.“Without a holistic approach, we will be fighting only the symptoms and not the underlying causes of this deadly phenomenon.”Emphasizing that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, faith, race, ethnicity, value system or culture, the Pakistani envoy also called for addressing defamation of religions and demonization of communities that provoke violent reactions.
