Turkey urges US to reverse visa halt, summons another staffer

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkey on Monday urged the United States to reverse a decision to halt the issuing of all regular visas at American consulates in the country, as prosecutors summoned another Istanbul mission staffer in an escalating crisis. The dispute, which analysts have described as the worst between the NATO allies in half a century, erupted when Turkey jailed a Turkish employee working at the American consulate in Istanbul.Ankara hit back at the US suspension of the issuing of non-immigrant visas -- a move described by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as very, very saddening -- with a tit-for-tat response against American citizens. The Turkish foreign ministry summoned the US embassys deputy chief of mission on Monday, urging Washington to reverse its visa decision. The US embassy in Ankara said Sunday that it would suspend issuing visas for tourism, medical treatment, business, temporary work or study, after the arrest last week.Above all, this decision is very, very saddening, Erdogan said in his first reaction to the decision, at a news conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in Kiev. For the (US) ambassador in Ankara to take a decision like this, to put it into practice, is saddening, he added. The ambassador, John Bass, insisted the suspension was not a decision we took lightly in a video released late Monday. We hope it will not last long, but at this time, we cant predict how long it will take to resolve this matter, he said.Last week an Istanbul court remanded in custody the consulate employee over accusations of links to the group of US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for the failed 2016 coup aimed at unseating Erdogan. He has been formally charged with espionage and seeking to overthrow the Turkish government, accusations the US embassy rejected as wholly without merit.Bass criticised the employees lack of sufficient access to his lawyer. On Monday, Turkish prosecutors summoned another local employee working at the American consulate in Istanbul, Anadolu said.Turkish television, including the private NTV channel, said earlier that an arrest warrant had been issued for the employee, though this was not confirmed by Anadolu. But the employees wife and child, whose age was not given, were detained in the Anatolian city of Amasya on suspicion of being key members of Gulens group, it said. The Hurriyet daily reported that the individual wanted by prosecutors had taken sanctuary at the US consulate in Istanbul. We dont know if these arrests are singular events or if we should expect other Turkish staff members to be arrested for simply talking to Turkish government officials or the wider Turkish public in the course of their duties, Bass said.Erdogans spokesman Ibrahim Kalin previously pointed to a phone call made from the Istanbul consulate to a key suspect on the night of the coup. Its definitely a historic low in ties, at least in recent memory, said Soner Cagaptay, director of the Turkish Research Program at the Washington Institute, adding that the last such dispute of this magnitude was after the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.Neither side is willing to step back, he said. The developments also came after a Turkish employee at the US consulate in the southern city of Adana was arrested in March on charges of supporting the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).Turkish officials had expressed hope of a new page in Ankara-Washington relations under President Donald Trump, and had pressed Washington for the extradition of the Pennsylvania-based Gulen, who denies any link to the coup bid.The lack of movement on the issue has further strained ties already fraying over Washingtons support for a Syrian Kurdish militia Ankara deems a terror group.Meanwhile, members of Erdogans security detail were indicted by US authorities after clashes with protesters during an official visit this year, infuriating Erdogan.American pastor Andrew Brunson, who ran a church in the western city of Izmir, has been held by authorities since October 2016 on charges of being a member of Gulens group.Erdogan suggested last month Turkey could release him in exchange for Gulen but Washington showed little interest in the proposal. It will be hard for relations to be restored any time soon to what they used to be, Cagaptay said.Turkeys influential Industrialists and Businessmans Association (TUSIAD) described the move by the US as most unfortunate, saying it risked hurting citizens who had nothing to do with the row.Flag carrier Turkish Airlines offered refunds or exchanges to passengers with Turkish passports flying to the US and vice versa. Its shares were hit heavily by the row, falling 9.26 percent to 8.43 dollars a share. The tensions put pressure on the Turkish lira, which lost 3.0 percent against the US dollar to trade at 3.72 lira while, the Borsa Istanbul 100 index was down 2.7 percent at 101,298 points.Seeking to reassure markets, the Turkish deputy central bank governor Murat Uysal said: There could be a temporary impact because of geopolitical concerns, we are watching closely.

Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties are covered by Governor Jerry Browns order. The counties are north of San Francisco Bay.An AFP correspondent in the Santa Rosa area witnessed multiple explosions from gas lines or gas tanks, in addition to charred out homes and a winery. Fire trucks were out in force in that area, he said.About 410 firefighters are working on blazes in Mendocino, a sheriffs spokesman in that county told the CBS news network, adding that multiple fatalities were expected.Another fire in Anaheim has surged to char 800 hectares and at least 200 fire fighters scrambled to try to contain it. It is anticipated that the Hotel has sustained significant damage.Pacific Gas & Electric said more than 196,000 customers had initially lost elecricity although half had had their power restored. As of 3.00 pm (2200 GMT), we have about 99,000 customers out of power throughout our service area, with the majority of them in Sonoma and Napa counties, it said.Coffey Park, a sprawling Santa Rosa neighborhood with dozens of homes, was also charred in the strong winds and low humidity fire experts said were more like fires in southern California.Cheri Sharp told Oregon-based TV news channel KOBI her home of 26 years in Santa Rosa was among those destroyed. All our pictures are gone. Everything, everything is gone. Weve got a fire pit. Its pretty awful, she said. But were all healthy and safe, and we have to try and be grateful for that. But its pretty awful.Marian Williams of Kenwood, in Sonoma County, told NBC Bay Area she joined a convoy of neighbors driving through the flames before dawn as one of the fires reached the areas vineyards. It was an inferno like youve never seen before, Williams told the station.Governor Brown in April declared the official end of the states drought that lasted more than five years. But the state is still dealing with the Santa Ana winds, a meteorological phenomenon which brings dry winds down from the high mountains east of the coastal areas -- a recipe for perfect wildfire conditions.Forest fires are common in the western United States during dry, hot summer months.Last month, a massive fire described as the biggest in the history of Los Angeles forced hundreds to evacuate their homes.Early Monday, the fires could be smelled in San Francisco, about 60 kilometers from the closest.

South Africa coach Gibson adjusts sights to World Cup

Posted:

BLOEMFONTEIN (AFP) - With a 2-0 Test series victory over Bangladesh out of the way, new South Africa head coach Ottis Gibson has started planning for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.After winning the second Test with two days to spare, the first of three one-day internationals against Bangladesh is set for Kimberley on Sunday and it will mark the first stage on a long road to the showpiece in England.Former West Indies all-rounder Gibson has been charged with ending South Africas failure to win a major global event. After South Africas innings win against Bangladesh, he said he and captain Faf du Plessis have already started working towards the tournament.Weve got about 30 to 35 one-day games between now and 2019, said Gibson. The idea between Faf and myself and the selectors is to have a look at players, to give opportunities to players who might be on the fringes, so that in a years time we narrow that pool down.At the moment we need a wide pool of players to look at so we can start to see who we might need, also bearing in mind the conditions.Well be playing in England, so well be looking at the type of players we might need for those conditions, to give them opportunities in the next year.Gibson said that in the year leading up to the World Cup, he hoped to have a good idea of which players to take. The last year is to try to nail down 15 or 16 names we can pencil in. But its still a long way between now and then, he said.Gibson has had talks with fast bowler Morne Morkel, who reportedly is thinking of accepting a county contract in England if he doesnt get assurances that he will be part of the World Cup plans.Thats not my understanding, said Gibson.I absolutely didnt tell him anything about the World Cup because it is so far away. I encouraged him to enjoy his cricket, which he was doing last week until he pulled up (with an injury).Gibson is looking forward to meeting star batsman AB de Villiers, who was not available for the Tests, but is currently playing in a first-class match for his franchise, the Titans.De Villiers will also play for a South African Invitation XI in a warm-up match for Bangladesh in Bloemfontein on Thursday, ahead of the one-day internationals. Were all looking forward to seeing AB in the next week, said Gibson. Ive had a few conversations with him, but we havent had a face-to-face yet.Gibson said he was pleased with the way the Test team had performed in a one-sided series against Bangladesh. At the start of the season everyone said easy series, but you still have to go and play cricket. Were very happy with the cricket we played. I said to the players, if you believe the opposition isnt that good, you must play to a standard and weve played to a very high standard.

Trump loses a key ally as Republican senator bites back

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Donald Trump has often lambasted potential allies from his own party but now a Republican has punched back, alleging that the presidents reckless behavior poses a danger to America.Senator Bob Corkers extraordinary weekend rebuke, in which he tweeted his dismay that the White House has become an adult day care center, was a shot heard round the Washington world. Was Corker patriotically sounding the alarm about a president who could put the country on the path to World War III, as he told Sundays edition of The New York Times?Or, having announced that he will not seek re-election next year, is he merely a lame duck lawmaker relishing the opportunity to throw off the shackles of party unity?Either way, one of the most respected establishment senators -- one from Trump country in Tennessee, no less -- has gone public with grievances many are sharing in private.Like Trump, Corker is a businessman turned elected official. He is also the chairman of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a powerful voice on foreign policy.Corker fired the first shots last week when he said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos.A furious Trump took to Twitter to demean Corker, alleging the senator had begged him for a 2018 endorsement and that he didnt have the guts to run for re-election.Corker hit back, telling the Times that he felt Trump posed a sharp risk to US national security, particularly over his comments about North Korea.I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, its a situation of trying to contain him, the 65-year-old said.He concerns me, the senator added. He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.- Wrong fight? -================In his nine months in office, Trump has openly criticized several in his party, including senators like John McCain who refused to back his Obamacare repeal effort. He has also feuded with congressional leaders such as top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell for failing to get the health bill over the line. The president branded Senator Lindsey Graham publicity seeking for criticizing him over his response to racially-charged violence this summer in Charlottesville. He attacked Senator Jeff Flake as weak on crime and border protection. And Trump chided House Speaker Paul Ryan for failing to reach a deal on raising the debt ceiling, forcing the president negotiate with Democrats. But few have spoken out so bluntly against the president as has Corker -- and the presidents response has confounded some experts. With Trump poised to decertify the Iran nuclear pact and leave it up to Congress whether to reimpose punitive sanctions, Corker will play a crucial role in what happens next.Corker may be the most important partner in that dance. This is so dumb, tweeted Ilan Goldenberg, a former senior State Department official.Trump also needs Corker, who has served as an ally behind the scenes, if he does not want his legislative agenda derailed in the Senate, where Republicans hold a slim majority. The party has a tax reform plan that provides substantial tax breaks for the wealthy, but Corker has signalled he will oppose the legislation if it adds to the US deficit.Corker has 15 months left in his term, and his remarks imply he is prepared to assume the role of Trumps chief critic within the Republican Party during that period. He also made it clear Sunday that most Senate Republicans share his view about the volatility of the president.Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what were dealing with here, Corker told the Times.

Pakistan fightback sets up intriguing finish

DUBAI (AFP) - Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed hit fighting half-centuries on Monday to thwart Sri Lanka and set up an enthralling finish to the second and final day-night Test in Dubai.Shafiq scored an unbeaten 86 while skipper Ahmed was 57 not out as they lifted Pakistan from a perilous position at 52-5 to 198-5 at close after being set a daunting target of 317.The pair added 146 for the unbroken sixth-wicket stand to leave Pakistan needing another 119 runs with five wickets in hand to level the series.Sri Lanka won a nail-biting first Test in Abu Dhabi by 21 runs. Both Shafiq and Ahmed batted confidently to raise hopes of Pakistan maintaining their unbeaten record in nine Test series in the United Arab Emirates, their adopted home since 2009.Pakistan have been forced to play at a neutral venue since a 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team prompted authorities to suspend international cricket in the country.Earlier, paceman Wahab Riaz grabbed four for 41 and left-arm spinner Haris Sohail took three wickets in a single over to dismiss Sri Lanka for 96 in their second innings, after they resumed on 34-5.Shafiq brought up his 19th Test fifty with a well-timed cover drive off fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, his first 50-plus score in 12 innings.Ahmed smashed part-timer Kusal Mendis for his fourth boundary to complete his 14th Test half-century.It was off-spinner Dilruwan Perera who ripped apart Pakistan with a triple strike in the second session. He dismissed Haris Sohail (10), Shan Masood (21) and Babar Azam (nought) to leave Pakistan in tatters at 52-5.He could have claimed the wickets of both Shafiq, on 26, and Ahmed, on 22, but both were dropped by Mendis at short leg off successive balls, leaving Sri Lanka to rue the missed chances.Pakistan made a disastrous start when opener Sami Aslam fell for one, caught in the slips off Lahiru Gamage.Masood and Azhar Ali (17) added 31 for the second wicket before the batting collapse began with Ali caught off fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep for 17.Pakistan had needed to make early inroads in the morning and Riaz provided them with the important wicket of Niroshan Dickwella in the fifth over of the day for 21.Leg-spinner Yasir Shah dismissed Perera for nought to leave Sri Lanka in danger of being all out for their lowest ever total of 71 against Pakistan. But Mendis (29) and Rangana Herath (17) added 35 for the eighth wicket to frustrate Pakistan before Sohail struck thrice in his only over to give his team hope of an upset win.

14 dead as Rohingya refugee boat sinks off Bangladesh

Posted:

SHAH PORIR DWIP (AFP) - At least 14 Rohingya refugees, most of them children, drowned and scores more were missing Monday after their overloaded boat capsized, the latest tragedy to strike those fleeing violence in Myanmar.Authorities in Bangladesh said the boat was carrying 60 to 100 people when it overturned and sank in rough seas on Sunday night. The bodies of 11 children, two women and a man were washed up on Shah Porir Dwip island in Bangladesh and border guards pulled 13 survivors from the sea, but the fate of the others remains unknown.Alif Jukhar, a Rohingya refugee who has long lived in Bangladesh, lost nine relatives in the disaster including his mother and father.Yesterday I spoke to my parents on the phone and they told me they would arrive in Shah Porir Dwip tomorrow, he told AFP as he used his bare hands to bury their bodies.Shortly afterwards, overcome with grief, he collapsed screaming in the middle of the cemetery.More than half a million Rohingya have left Myanmar since militant raids on police posts on August 25 prompted a brutal military backlash against the Muslim minority, which the United Nations has said could amount to ethnic cleansing.Around 150 have drowned trying to make the journey in small and rickety fishing boats that coastguards say are woefully inadequate for the rough seas.A survivor, Sayed Hossain, wept as he watched the body of his two-year-old son being taken away to the local cemetery. We set off at around 6 pm. We did not have any choice but to leave our village, he said, telling how the overloaded boat overturned when it hit a shoal and sank in rough water. They (security forces) have restricted our movements. Many are starving as we could not even go to shop or market to buy food, said the 30-year-old Rohingya farmhand, who lived in a village east of Myanmars Buthidaung township.Hossains mother, his pregnant wife and two children were all still missing. The International Organization for Migration said some children on board had lost their entire families in the disaster and were now alone in a strange country.- Dangerous journey -Jashim Uddin, a teacher at the local Islamic religious school, or madrassa, said he received a call from the coastguards at 5:00 am to tell him that bodies had been found on the beach. As tracking down their relatives is often impossible, the victims are routinely taken to the madrassa to perform their last rites.Late last month more than 60 refugees are feared to have died when the boat carrying them from Myanmar capsized in rough weather in the Bay of Bengal.Villagers at Shah Porir Dwip, where most of the boats land, told AFP the Rohingya were increasingly travelling at night to avoid strict border patrols in Bangladesh, making the journey even more dangerous.Last week the guards destroyed at least 30 wooden fishing vessels amid increased concern they were being used to bring the popular methamphetamine drug known locally as Yaba into the country, using the refugee crisis as cover.Gangs of boat owners, crew and fishermen have also been charging the fleeing Rohingya upwards of $250 for the two-hour journey that normally costs no more than $5.The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar refuses to recognise the Rohingya as a distinct ethnic group and considers them illegal migrants from Bangladesh. While the worst of the violence appears to have abated, insecurity, food shortages and tensions with Buddhist neighbours are still driving thousands of Rohingya to make the arduous journey to Bangladesh.Several thousand new arrivals surged into Bangladesh on Monday after the influx had slowed recently to around 2,000 a day.Lieutenant Commander Manzurul Hassan Khan, a local border guard commander, estimated that 6,000 had arrived during the day after crossing the Naf river at the border village of Anjumanpara. An AFP correspondent at the scene saw at least 10,000 arrive throughout the day and into the evening.Among the latest influx were two young boys, aged two-and-a-half and three years old, who died due to hunger and exhaustion as they entered Bangladesh.Their parents told us that they died due to starvation ... They were buried in our village graveyard, Khan said.
