Pakistan eager to extend winning streak

ABU DHABI (Dunya News/Agencies) – The second One-Day International of the five-match series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi today (Monday).Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, has urged his team to maintain a ruthless approach and the winning momentum in the second day-night ODI against Sri Lanka.Pakistan went 1-0 up in the five-match series with a clinical 83-run win in the first game in Dubai on Friday. Led by Babar Azam (103) and Shoaib Malik (81), the batsmen did their job by posting 292 for 6 in their 50 overs before Hasan Ali and Rumman Raees shared six wickets to keep Sri Lanka down to 209 for 8.That result gave Pakistan a five-match winning streak, while Sri Lanka slumped to its eighth consecutive loss.Sarfraz hoped his team would live up to expectations after the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 triumph in June. “We did well in the first ODI, said Sarfraz on Sunday. We played well and the team gave an all-round performance, so the expectations are high for the second game as well. We have prepared well. It’s another important match and we will take it one match at a time. With seemingly all bases covered, it was no surprise that Sarfraz announced an unchanged XI for today’s game. But he called on his batsmen to be more proactive in the first ten overs. We missed a few things and would like to improve on that, said Sarfraz. We didnt take very many singles in the first ten overs, so we have to address that. Its important to build the team towards the 2019 World Cup,” he added. “We are giving consistent chances to youngsters, and that will be the key towards that event.Nic Pothas, the Sri Lanka coach, urged his batsmen to stand up and be counted. Obviously they ended up getting too many runs on that wicket, he said of the first ODI. From a batting point of view, the currency of your batting is runs. If you don’t keep making them, the shop is going to close down at some point. We have to ask the batters to take some responsibility. The top six batters managed 96 between them. One batter got 53 and you are not going to get too many (if that’s the case).Sri Lanka has now failed to post a 250-plus total in its last seven matches, and Pothas admitted that the team was low on confidence.Confidence is a big thing. When you lose two of the legends of your game, it is a massive thing but on the flip side, Pakistan have got very experienced players,” he pointed out. “They have won the Champions Trophy and they are flying high. We have to find answers, and find them quick.Sri Lanka might tinker with its bowling, bringing in Vishwa Fernando, the left-arm quick, for Lahiru Gamage.Teams:Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), Ahmed Shehzad, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Rumman Raees, Junaid Khan.Sri Lanka (from): Upul Tharanga (capt), Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Milinda Siriwardana, Chamara Kapugedera, Thisara Perera, Seekuge Prasanna, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando, Akila Dananjaya, Jeffrey Vandersay.

De Kock, Amla trump Mushfiqur century

Posted:

KIMBERLEY (AFP) - Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla shared a record partnership as South Africa cruised to a ruthless ten-wicket win in the first one-day international against Bangladesh at the Diamond Oval on Sunday.De Kock (168 not out) and Amla (110 not out) put on an unbeaten 282 to overhaul Bangladeshs 278 for seven with 7.1 overs to spare. The South African openers overshadowed the feat of Mushfiqur Rahim, whose 110 not out was the first century by a Bangladesh batsman against South Africa in any international match. Bangladeshs total was their highest in one-day games against South Africa.Mushfiqurs innings came with a price. He appeared to suffer a hamstring injury and he watched the De Kock-Amla partnership from the players balcony, adding to injuries which kept two other key players, Tamim Iqbal (thigh) and Mustafizur Rahman (ankle) out of the match. We have to keep fighting, said Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza about the injuries. These things happen in cricket. You cant blame anything.Mashrafe said that although Bangladesh had posted a good total, we knew we had to take wickets. If you can stop the runs at both ends the pressure will bring wickets. But we couldnt apply pressure.South African captain Faf du Plessis praised what he described as another dominating performance. As a team you want to be ruthless. Today was a very, very good example of that. When youre bossing the game and you are 150 for no wicket its easy to throw wickets away, but the guys are hungry to put in massive performances.De Kock made his runs off 145 balls with 21 fours and two sixes. Amla had less of the strike, facing 112 balls and hitting eight fours. Their partnership was the highest for any wicket for South Africa and the joint sixth highest in all one-day internationals.Mushfiqurs fifth one-day century was greeted with rapturous applause by hundreds of Bangladeshi supporters. He made his runs off 116 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. He shared successive partnerships of 59 with Shakib Al Hasan, 69 with Mahmudullah and 42 with Sabbir Rahman for the third, fourth and fifth wickets.Shakib made a quiet return after resting during a two-match Test series in which Bangladesh were heavily defeated. He made 29 and conceded 48 runs in eight overs. But he became only the fifth player to complete the one-day international double of 5000 runs and 200 wickets.Kagiso Rabada spearheaded South Africas bowling attack, taking four for 43.
