Pakistan deports Turkish teacher and family

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - A Turkish teacher and his family who were abducted in Pakistan last month have been deported from the country in defiance of a court ruling, a source and a lawyer said Monday, sparking fears for human rights.Kacmaz Mesut, his wife and two young daughters were picked up in September by plain-clothed officers, blindfolded and bound before being loaded into trucks and taken away, eyewitnesses have said.Lawyers petitioned the courts on behalf of the missing as fears swirled they were targeted for allegedly having ties to an exiled preacher Ankara blames for last years coup attempt. The father of the family, Kacmaz Mesut, was a former director of PakTurk International Schools and Colleges, private schools popular in Pakistan allegedly backed by US-based Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulens Hizmet group.Ankara accuses Gulen of masterminding a coup attempt against Erdogans government in 2016 -- an allegation the cleric strongly denies -- and is seeking his extradition from the US.Pakistani officials refused to comment in the wake of the familys disappearance. But a friend of the family who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity Monday -- as he feared for his own security -- said Turkish police had flown to Pakistan to take custody of them.Kacmaz Mesut, his wife and two young daughters were handed over to Turkish police at Islamabad airport on Friday night, he said.I spoke on phone with Kacmaz Mesuts daughters who confirmed that they have reached Istanbul, but their parents were still in custody while they have been handed over to relatives, he continued. The daughters, aged 14 and 10, also said that Turkish police manhandled their father during the flight, he added.Usama Malik, a lawyer for the family, confirmed the deportation and told AFP it had gone ahead despite a ruling by the Lahore High Court directing authorities not to take any action while the petition was still pending.Malik said that the judge reprimanded authorities Monday and ordered them to submit an explanation by Tuesday. He also said that Mesut family had been granted asylum in Pakistan as refugees until November 2018.There was no immediate comment by Pakistani officials.Last November Pakistan deported dozens of Turkish teachers tied to PakTurk schools after a visit from Turkeys President Tayyip Erdogan, sparking small demonstrations in major cities.Pakistan has had a history of enforced disappearances over the past decade, but they had mainly been confined to conflict zones near the countrys border with Afghanistan, or to restive southwestern Balochistan province. The apparent abductions of five leftist bloggers earlier this year also sparked fears that such crackdowns are being extended to activists on social media.

Babar, Shadab steer Pakistan to win in second ODI

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Babar Azam scored a second successive hundred while Shadab Khan gave his career best bowling and batting to help Pakistan thump Sri Lanka by 32 runs in the second day-night international in Abu Dhabi on Monday.One-drop batsman Babar knocked a fighting 133-ball 103 while Shadab scored a career best 52 not out to lift Pakistan from a struggling 79-5.That was before Shadab the bowler returned with his best figures of 3-47 to dismiss Sri Lanka for 187 all out in 48 overs. The 23-year-old Babar and Shadab, who turned 19 earlier this month, were engaged in a match-turning 109-run seventh wicket stand which helped Pakistan reach 219-9 on a sluggish Sheikh Zayed Stadium. The victory gives Pakistan a 2-0 lead in the five-match series while this becomes Sri Lankas ninth defeat in a row.Skipper Upul Tharanga became the first Sri Lankan and 11th batsmen in the one-day history to carry his bat through a complete innings with a fighting 144-ball 112 not out with 14 boundaries -- his 15th ODI century. It were bowlers who helped Pakistan defend a low total despite Tharanga and Jeffrey Vandarsay (22) put up a fighting 76-run eighth wicket stand, but it wasnt enough.Dropped twice on 13 and then on 20, Tharana stood alone as Sri Lanka needed 51 off the last five overs but the last two batsmen were run out and he was left stranded. It were bowlers who helped Pakistan defend a low target.Once paceman Junaid Khan removed Niroshan Dickwella for three in the third over, spinners Shadab, Shoaib Malik (1-17) and Mohammad Hafeez (1-24) rocked the Sri Lankan batting with regular wickets.Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed praised his bowlers.I cant praise the bowlers enough for defending this 220, said Ahmed. Babar and Shadab are very young and it was nice to see them bat so well.Tharanga admitted his batting let the team down. Its disappointing to lose, said Tharanga. When youre 90 for 7, its a tough task. It was good to carry the bat, but Im disappointed with the result.Earlier, Azam followed up his 103 which anchored Pakistans 83-run win in the first game in Dubai on Friday, once again anchoring the innings.Pakistan, who won the toss and batted, found the going tough as they lost half the side at the end of 20 overs for just 79, but Azam and Shadab led the fightback.Azam brought up his seventh one-day hundred off 130 balls -- his fourth this year -- with a sharp double in the 49th over.Shadab, who scored 14 not out in his only previous innings, played a support role during which he hit just one boundary off 68 balls.Sri Lankan new-ball bowlers Lahiru Gamage (4-57) and Suranga Lakmal (1-42) made early inroads with three wickets inside first power-play of ten overs.Gamage had Fakhar Zaman dismissed for 11 and Mohammad Hafeez for eight while Lakmal dismissed out-of-form Ahmed Shehzad for eight.Medium pacer Thisara Perera (2-34) then struck twice, removing Shoaib Malik (11) and Sarfraz Ahmed (five) to leave Pakistan in a spot of bother.Azam added 22 for the sixth wicket with Imad Wasim (ten) before his stand with Shadab gave Pakistans total some respectability. The remaining matches will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 18) and Sharjah (October 20 and 23). The two teams will also play three Twenty20 internationals, the first two in Abu Dhabi (October 26 and 27) and the last in Lahore (October 29).

Police renew Stokes incident witness appeal

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - English police have called again for two men who they believe are key witnesses to the incident that has placed talismanic England all-rounder Ben Stokess place on the Ashes tour in jeopardy to come forward. The police had already appealed a fortnight ago for the duo to assist them with their investigation into the disturbance outside a nightclub in Bristol late last month which resulted in England vice-captain Stokes being arrested. Were renewing our appeal to trace two men we believe could be key witnesses to a disorder in Bristol in the early hours of Monday, 25 September.A 27-year-old man suffered minor facial injuries in the incident. The men we hope to talk to left Mbargo nightclub on Triangle West at 2.19am and walked in the direction of Queens Road with two other men.The police added that alongside one arrest three other men had attended voluntary interviews, one of those being 26-year-old Stokes England team-mate Alex Hales, who was out with him on the night in question.Last week, representatives of Stokes said he would offer a full explanation of the incident when the time is right.Stokes -- who got married last week -- will not travel to Australia with the rest of the England squad for the Ashes as he waits to learn whether he will face criminal charges but has not been ruled out of the five-Test series, which starts on November 23.The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will not consider him for selection until further notice as it awaits developments in the ongoing police investigation. The players financial fortunes have also suffered with sports equipment manufacturer New Balance terminating their contract with him last week. The companys decision was announced hours after Stokes apologised to British celebrity Katie Price and her disabled son Harvey after a video emerged of Stokes impersonating the pair.Stokes, who is also subject to internal disciplinary action, has had his central contract renewed by the ECB since his arrest.

Porter ruled out of England Lions tour with injury

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Essex seamer Jamie Porter has withdrawn from the England Lions tour of Australia after suffering a stress fracture of the lower back.Porter propelled Essex to an unexpected county championship title with 75 wickets at 16.82, netting twin awards from the Cricket Writers Club and the Professional Cricketers Association.A trip to Australia, where the Lions will effectively shadow the Ashes squad during November and December, was seen as the next step in the 24-year-olds development. The stress fracture was spotted during tests by the Lions and Porter will instead link up with the England and Wales Cricket Boards pace programme to build fitness.Worcestershires Josh Tongue will step up to the Lions tour. While it was initially surprising and disappointing for Jamie and for us to discover he has a stress fracture, we have agreed with him and with Essex that this new approach is the best option, said national selector James Whitaker.Spending the first half of the winter on the pace programme will allow him to take a break from competitive cricket after two excellent and demanding seasons for Essex, allowing the injury to recover, and for a focus on his rehabilitation.

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in 2nd ODI by 33 runs

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs in the second day-night international in Abu Dhabi on Monday, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.Babar Azam smashed a second hundred in as many games with 101 in Pakistans 219-9 in 50 overs before the Sri Lankan skipper Upal Tharanga scored an unbeaten 112 in his teams 186 all out in 48 overs. The third match is also in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.Sri Lanka in for Pakistan planSri Lankas cricket authority said Monday it will go ahead with its tour of Pakistan later this month for the third and final Twenty20 match despite security concerns expressed by several players.Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said its executive committee agreed unanimously that the October 29 match in Lahore should go ahead as scheduled following reassurances of the best possible security. The board said it confirmed its commitment to play the third T20 in Lahore following assessments made by both Sri Lankan and Pakistan government authorities, independent security experts and the International Cricket Council.Accordingly, the selection committee of the SLC will finalise a squad of 22 by Tuesday and announce the final 15 on Friday, the SLC said in a statement.SLC chief Thilanga Sumathipala will accompany the team to Lahore, the statement added. The October 29 match will be the first played in Pakistan by Sri Lanka -- or any other top international team -- since militants ambushed its team bus en route to the Lahore stadium in 2009, wounding at least seven players.Doubts over whether the match would take place were raised over the weekend when some players expressed concerns for their safety and the board said it would review security reports, making a final determination on Monday.Lahore will host the T20 series finale following several matches played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Pakistan have played their home internationals since the ambush.Since 2009, the only international team to visit Pakistan is Zimbabwe, who played five limited-overs games in Lahore in 2015.But after Pakistan successfully staged the final of its domestic Pakistan Super League tournament in Lahore under heavy security this March, the country hoped international games could once again resume.A successful series against a World XI team featuring top foreign players in Lahore last month further boosted calls for cricket to return to the militancy-racked nation.Sri Lanka Cricket chief Sumathipala in August appealed for an end to Pakistans isolation -- a statement welcomed by Pakistani cricket officials -- and urged countries to come to play.He recalled that several Test nations did not want to visit Sri Lanka at the height of the Tamil separatist conflict, when bombs were exploding in the capital in the mid-1990s, but Pakistan and India had toured Sri Lanka at the time.

Ashley puts Newcastle up for sale

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is ready to end his controversial reign after putting the Premier League club up for sale on Monday.Ashley has been a polarising figure at Newcastle since taking over at St James Park in 2007 and the sports retail tycoon has decided now is the time to step down.Newcastle have been relegated from the Premier League twice in the Ashley era, with the 53-year-old angering Magpies fans with his failed managerial appointments and his decision to sell naming rights to the clubs historic stadium.Ashley has frustrated current Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez by failing to back the Spaniard in the transfer market.Benitez has publicly complained about Newcastles spending on several occasions since leading them to promotion from the Championship last season, with Ashley responding that he doesnt have the cash to compete with superpowers like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United. Now Ashley, who paid 134 million ($178 million, 150 million euros) for Newcastle, reportedly hopes to find a new owner by the end of the year following the formal announcement of his sale plan.As one of the Premier Leagues oldest and best supported football clubs - and for the benefit of its many fans and supporters in the UK and across the world - Newcastle United requires a clear direction and a path to a bright and successful future, a Newcastle statement read.To give the club the best possible opportunity of securing the positioning and investment necessary to take it to the next level, at what is an important time in its history, its present ownership has determined that it is in the best interests of Newcastle United and its fans for the club to be put up for sale.Sour atmosphereSpeculation over Newcastles future was ramped up after the appearance of financier Amanda Staveley at their match against Liverpool earlier this month. After initially trying to win over Newcastle fans by sitting with them at away matches -- the Londoner was often pictured in a Newcastle shirt drinking beer with supporters -- he spent far less time at the north-east club once the atmosphere soured in recent years.Ashley unsuccessfully cycled through a host of managers in a bid to transform Newcastles fortunes, with Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear, Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren among his hires.Newcastle are currently ninth in the Premier League after Sundays 2-2 draw at Southampton, but Ashley looks to have realised more investment is needed and he is willing to let a new buyer defer part of the payments to allow funds to be used on improving Benitezs squad. To give an incoming owner the maximum possible flexibility to make meaningful investment in the club, including in its playing squad, the sale process will give interested parties the opportunity of deferring substantial payments, the statement added.A process will now commence of identifying new ownership for the club that will be capable of delivering the sustained investment in and dedication to the club that is necessary for it to achieve its ambitions.
