Pakistan eye more dominance in ODI series

Posted:

ABU DHABI (Dunya News/Agencies) – The third One-Day International of the five-match series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi today (Wednesday).Pakistans head coach Mickey Arthur has urged his players to keep their winning momentum intact. Pakistan has a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with a convincing 83-run win in the first ODI in Dubai followed by a scrappy, hard-fought 32-run triumph in the second ODI, a result that took the teams winning sequence to six games.Arthur, however, felt Pakistan could still do better in its overall performance.I was a bit disappointed with the overall performance in the second game, he said. I think the partnership between Babar (Azam) and Shadab (Khan) was good, but we lacked a little bit in the intensity in our overall performance. We were still good enough to win which was great.Reeling at 101 for 6, Pakistan recovered through a seventh-wicket stand of 109 between Azam and Shadab. Azam hit his second successive hundred, while Shadab hit a career-best 52 not out to lift Pakistan to 219 for 9.Sri Lankan too recovered from a struggling 93 for 7 with a stand of 76 between Upul Tharanga (112 not out) and Jeffrey Vandersay (22), but in the end it was not enough to avoid a ninth consecutive defeat - the teams worst losing streak since 1987.We bowled well to defend that low total, said Arthur of his teams bowling, led by Shadabs 3 for 47. I think our bowling was great. However, the coach called for no let-up in intensity on the field. It seemed that we have just taken the foot off the pedal. But the real positive was that the guys fought really well and fought for each other,” held Arthur. “The attitudes have been good and I cannot find fault the commitment and the work ethic of the team.I am hoping that we turn it around and put in a really good performance. It’s six in a row for us, which is great and we want to keep building on that and keep this winning record going for as long as we possibly can because this provides stability and provides us the confidence we need going forward.”Arthur said Pakistans standards in the first game were excellent. Our standards were good and we continued on the road that we wanted to continue on. We batted well, put runs on the board and then attacked with the ball and put them under pressure in the first game. The home team is likely to persist with Ahmed Shehzad, the out-of-form opener, for one more game before giving the uncapped Imam-ul-Haq a go -- perhaps after the lead gets unassailable. On the other side, Sri Lanka needs to overturn the losing habit before the series goes out of its hands.Tharanga lamented Mondays loss.We were disappointed to lose on Monday, said he captain, who became the first Sri Lankan and the 11th batsman in ODI history to carry his bat through an innings. Vandersay batted well too, but when youre 90 for 7, its a tough task. It was good to carry the bat, but I’m disappointed with the result. We need a quick turnaround.Sri Lanka may replace Milinda Siriwardana with Chamara Kapugedara in an attempt to bolster the batting, which has not crossed 250 in the teams last seven games.

Amir back in Pakistan's Twenty20 squad

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistan recalled pace spearhead Mohammad Amir in the 16-man squad for the three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka starting next week. The 25-year-old suffered a shin injury during the second Test in Dubai but is included in the squad after rehab in the hope that he will recover in time. The first two matches will be played in Abu Dhabi on October 26 and 27 before teams fly to Lahore for the final game on October 29.Sarfraz Ahmed will lead the Pakistan side.Sri Lanka Cricket Monday confirmed their team will tour Lahore in a fly in, fly out arrangement for just one day -- eight years after their team bus was attacked by gunmen in the same city. The attacks, which left eight people killed and seven visiting players and their staff injured, forced international teams to stay away from Pakistan over security fears.Pakistan successfully hosted the final of the Pakistan Super League in Lahore earlier this year and last months three-match Twenty20 series against a World XI revived international cricket in the country. Also staging a comeback in the squad is spinning allrounder Mohammad Hafeez who was dropped for the World XI series, while pace allrounder Amir Yamin has also been recalled after his performance in domestic matches.Yamin played his last international match, against England in the UAE, in 2015.Squad: Sarfraz Ahmed (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Ahmed Shahzad, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Amir Yamin, Mohammad Amir (subject to fitness clearance), Rumman Raees, Usman Shinwari, Umar Amin.

Sri Lanka approaching Pakistan visit cautiously

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Sri Lankan team manager Asanka Gurusinha is confident his board will find the best way to handle a 24-hour fly-in, fly-out tour of Pakistan for a single Twenty20 match later this month.Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Monday it will go ahead with its trip to Pakistan for the third and final Twenty20 match despite security concerns expressed by several players.Th first two matches will be played in Abu Dhabi on October 26 and 27.The visit would be Sri Lankas first to Pakistan since 2009 when masked gunmen ambushed the tourists team bus on its way to the ground during the second Test in Lahore. The attacks killed eight people and left seven Sri Lanka players and a staff member injured, forcing international teams to stay away from Pakistan over security fears.Gurusinha, who is with Sri Lanka on their tour of the United Arab Emirates, hoped players with concerns over the trip will look into it.SLC will be speaking to most of the players to find the best way to handle it, said Gurusinha, who played 41 Tests and 147 one-day internationals as a middle-order batsman in the 1980s and 1990s.It seems like we will be there in Lahore only for 24 hours. We are flying in and flying out. We are hoping that some of the players who had concerns will seriously look at it (the tour).SolidarityGurusinha, a member of Sri Lankas World Cup-winning team in 1996, said it was time to reciprocate Pakistans support prior to that tournament which came in the wake of a Colombo bomb blast that left 91 people dead and hundreds more injured. They (Pakistan team) came down to help us two weeks after the Central Bank bombing. Had they not come down, I am not too sure whether Kenya and Zimbabwe would have honoured World Cup fixtures in 1996, said Gurusinha.Australia and West Indies forfeited matches at the tournament over security fears due to the civil war in Sri Lanka against the Tamils, but a joint India-Pakistan team visited Sri Lanka to show solidarity.India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka co-hosted the 1996 tournament. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has promised stringent security arrangements will be in place, at levels normally reserved for state heads.Since the 2009 attacks, Pakistan has only hosted Zimbabwe for a short limited-overs series in 2015 and the final of the Pakistan Super League in March this year. They also welcomed a World XI comprised of players from seven countries for a three-match Twenty20 series in Lahore last month. The security has been cleared. The team will seriously look at it and I am hopeful players will look at it favourably, said Gurusinha.Asked which players were willing to go ahead with the tour, Gurusinha replied: There are a lot of positives taking place. It is not nice to name the players.Thats what SLC is very interested in. There was positive feedback from most players. But Sri lankan media reported limited-overs captain Upul Tharanga and fast bowler Lasith Malinga have shown reservations over travelling to Lahore.

Sri Lanka eases ban on Gunathilaka before Pakistan tour

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lankas cricket board Tuesday halved a six-match ban imposed on all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka for misconduct, amid speculation several players may drop out of an upcoming Twenty20 series final in Pakistan. The boards decision clears Gunathilaka to play in the three-match series starting October 26 in the United Arab Emirates, though the final squad of 15 will not be announced until Friday. The final will be played on October 29 in Lahore, where the Sri Lankan team bus came under attack from militants in 2009.No top international cricket side has returned to Pakistan since then. The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket decided to revise the suspension imposed on Gunathilaka upon consideration of the appeal, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.Gunathilaka was suspended for unspecified misconduct during Sri Lankas humiliating home series thrashing by India in which the islanders lost 9-0.His fine -- 20 percent of his annual match fees -- remains unchanged.Gunathilaka was dropped from the squad for the ongoing five-match one-day international series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).His reprieve comes as players express private concerns about the boards decision to play the Twenty20 series final in Lahore.A source close to the board said skipper Upul Tharanga and Lasith Malinga were likely to pull out of the entire series due to security concerns about the final. The board announced Monday that it would go ahead with the tour and confirmed its commitment to play the third T20 in Lahore after assessments by government agencies, independent security experts and the International Cricket Council.Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala would accompany the team, the board added. In August he called for an end to Pakistans isolation from world cricket.Pakistan shifted their home matches to the UAE after the 2009 militant attack.Since then, only low-ranked Zimbabwe has toured Pakistan, playing five limited-overs games in Lahore in 2015.But a World XI squad comprising 13 players from seven top cricket-playing nations played in Lahore last month, with Pakistan hoping the visit would help end years of international isolation.

Indian court reinstates Sreesanth fixing ban

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - A life ban on Indian fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth for match-fixing was reinstated by a court on Tuesday following an appeal by the countrys cricket board. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had moved the Kerala High Court in August to review an order that acquitted Sreesanth due to lack of proof. The court in a fresh verdict overturned its previous judgement. But Sreesanth, 34, vowed to keep fighting against what he called injustice against him.All I have is my family and lots of dear ones who still believes in me... I will keep fighting and make sure I dont give up, he said in a Tweet. This is the worst decision ever..special rule for me?what about real culprits? What about chennai super kings ? And what about Rajasthan ?, Sreesanth wrote on Twitter. He and two other Rajasthan Royals players were banned for life over alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing following a 2013 scandal in the Indian Premier League.Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested along with scores of bookies as part of a probe into allegations that players had under-performed in return for cash.Criminal charges were later dropped, but the players remained banned for breaching the BCCIs code of conduct.Sreesanth, who is 13 short of 100 Test wickets, has played 27 Tests and 53 one-day internationals since making his debut in 2005.

Middlesex relegation confirmed as appeal dismissed

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Middlesex failed on Tuesday in their appeal against a two-point penalty for slow over rates, which means they will be relegated just a year after winning the county championship. The club, who play at Lords, were docked the points during their match against Surrey in August -- a game that was abandoned when a crossbow bolt was fired into The Oval. They were subsequently relegated by a single point after losing their final match of the season to Somerset. The Cricket Discipline Commission, which operates at arms length from the England and Wales Cricket Board, said it had upheld the points deduction, with chairman Tim OGorman adding that the rules are clear.I do not accept that Middlesex only agreed to the abandonment of the match on condition that their slow over rate in the first innings would be overlooked, he said.It is not within the power or gift of either the umpires or the players to make deals like that. The match was abandoned for safety reasons. Play ended accordingly and the points earned or deducted should stand with effect from that time.Middlesex grudgingly accepted the decision.Whilst we still believe the imposition of the penalty was unjust, we accept the decision of the Chairman of the CDC and will move on, said their chief executive Richard Goatley in a statement. We do not believe that any further action is in the interests of Middlesex or the wider game. We will now focus on regaining a place in the 1st Division at the earliest opportunity.

No progress on aid, refugee return in UN-Myanmar talks

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - A senior UN official on Tuesday returned empty-handed from five days of talks in Myanmar where he appealed for the safe return of Muslim Rohingyas sheltering in Bangladesh and access for aid workers.Jeffrey Feltman, the UN under-secretary-general for political affairs, discussed the plight of the 582,000 Rohingyas who have fled an army campaign in Myanmars Rakhine state since late August.Feltman met with Myanmars de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and military commander-in-chief General Min Aung Hlaing, and was taken on a plane to fly over Rakhine where he saw torched villages, a UN spokesman said.He reiterated Secretary-General Antonio Guterres call that humanitarian actors be given full and unhindered access to northern Rakhine State and that refugees be allowed voluntary, safe and dignified return to their place of origin, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. The United Nations has for weeks demanded that UN aid workers be allowed in Rakhine state and that Rohingyas be given permission to safely return to their homes.I dont think in announcing the trip we had expected any quick wins. This is an ongoing discussion with the government of Myanmar, Dujarric said.Asked why Myanmar was still blocking aid deliveries to Rakhine, he said: Thats a valid question to ask to the authorities of Myanmar. We would like to see that access as soon as possible.Earlier, the UN refugee agency said in Geneva that some 10,000-15,000 Rohingyas were stranded near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said many of them had chosen to remain in their homes in Rakhine despite repeated threats to leave or be killed. They finally fled when their villages were set on fire, he said. The United Nations has denounced the army campaign against the Rohingya as ethnic cleansing but Myanmar authorities argue the military operations are to root out militants following attacks on police posts in late August. In his talks with Myanmar officials, Feltman stressed that successful counter-terrorism efforts do not rely exclusively on security measures, said Dujarric. The UN Security Council is weighing action, possibly a resolution laying out demands, but diplomats have said China, a supporter of Myanmars former ruling junta, and Russia are opposed to such a measure.
