US, Pakistan have much to gain by working together: Khawaja Asif

Posted:

WASHINGTON (APP): Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday said Pakistan and the United States together had degraded al-Qaeda in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and need to continue work together and cooperate in defeating the newer and more toxic form of terrorism. In his opening remarks at a seminar organized by the Washington-based United States Institute of Peace, the minister also emphasized that both the United States and Pakistan had much to gain by working together, including achieving a durable peace in Afghanistan.“Pakistan considers itself a longstanding friend of the United States,” the minister said and added that friends need to revitalize and refresh their friendship from time to time.“A partnership that is anchored in mutual respect, pursuit of common interest and understanding of each other’s concerns has served us both,” he said. However, the minister said, lately, there had been a tendency to place Pakistan’s counterterrorism credentials under focus. “The truth is that Pakistan is not just fighting but also winning against terrorism,” the minister added.Kh. Asif said four years ago, Pakistan had one the highest incidence of terrorism anywhere in the world, but Pakistan responded to this tide of terrorism by building a strategic national consensus on a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy. This national consensus, he added, helped mobilized nearly 200,000 troops against the forces of terrorism which dealt a decisive blow to all terrorist networks that had taken advantage of the remote geography of the treacherous border with Afghanistan.“Our troops have bravely soldiered in terrain that has deceived visitors for centuries. What is often forgotten is that Pakistan has been conducting series of major counter-terrorism operations for over a decade and has progressively secured all territory on its side of the border,” he mentioned. He said as a result of these successful operations Pakistan had seen the most significant decline in the number of terrorist attacks anywhere in the world and the civilian deaths due to terrorism had declined considerably since 2013.Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said that while Pakistan was winning the fight against terrorism, the successes have come at a staggering human and financial cost.Pakistan has lost 62,000 lives and its economy has suffered losses to the tune of over $120 billion in the 16 years of war. This war has been Pakistan’s “longest, the deadliest and the toughest fight,” he added. The successes against terrorism, the Minister said, has transformed the landscape of Pakistan with democratic institutions continue to thrive, terrorism being vigorously combated, and economy being stabilized and is poised for rapid growth.”In Pakistan, despondency has given way to optimism. Underdevelopment is being overcome by growth.”He said, one of the key pillars of our policy is to strengthen regional integration and economic connectivity. China Pakistan Economic Corridor is the most conspicuous element of this policy. The CPEC embraces a number of infrastructure and development projects. Pakistan is also promoting other regional connectivity projects such as Central Asia South Asia (CASA) -1000 power project, he said.Clearly the dividends of achieving security and peace can be shared throughout the region, the Minister while adding that this is where both Pakistan and the United States can work together. We can together build on an improved security environment in Pakistan by expanding this arc of stability. This will strengthen regional economic connectivity, promote trade and bring prosperity to the whole region. He said since independence, the cooperation with the United States has served mutual interest and Pakistan appreciates American help in diverse areas of defence, education, agriculture and energy. But let’s not forget that Pakistan has also helped the United States fight and degrade the organization that attacked the US on 9/11. Within our limited capacity and without seeking quid pro quo, Pakistan has facilitated logistics of the United States longest war, he said.Pakistan expects a relationship based on mutual respect with recognition of each other’s sacrifices, the Minister said and assured that Islamabad will continue to work with the United States and the International Community for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Bangladesh retain injured Tamim for S. Africa ODIs

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh on Thursday retained opening batsman Tamim Iqbal in their squad for the three-match one-day international series against South Africa despite an injury concern.A hamstring injury forced Tamim out of the second Test beginning Friday at Bloemfontein but team physiotherapist Thihan Chandramohan was hopeful he would recover in time for the ODI series which starts October 15.Following the first Test match Tamim underwent an ultrasound scan which demonstrated a grade 1 hip muscle strain, Chandramohan said in a statement. These findings coupled with his worsened clinical signs mean that he will be unavailable for selection for the second Test.If his recovery goes to plan, then we are hopeful that he will be fit for the first ODI on 15 October.Tamim pulled his muscle during a three-day practice match at Benoni last month and did not appear fully fit during Bangladeshs massive 333-run defeat in the first Test at Potchefstroom.Batting at number five rather than his usual openers position, he made 39 runs in the first innings. It was the first time in his Test career that he could not open the innings. He scored a duck in the second innings.All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan also returned to the ODI side after taking a break from the Test series.Batsman Nasir Hossain and wicketkeeper Liton Das were recalled, with rookie all-rounder Saifuddin the only uncapped player in the 15-member squad.Pace bowler Shafiul Islam, batsman Mosaddek Hossain and left-arm Sanjamul Islam, who were part of the squad that played in the ICC Champions Trophy in England, have been excluded. The ODI series will start in Kimberly before Bangladesh play their next two ODIs at Paari and East London on October 18 and 22.Bangladesh will also play two Twenty20 internationals during their month long tour.Squad: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Sabbir Rhaman, Nasir Hossain, Mehidi Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, and Saifuddin.

South Africa's bowling resources will be tested: Du Plessis

Posted:

BLOEMFONTEIN (AFP) - South Africas fast bowling resources will be tested in the second Test against Bangladesh starting at the Mangaung Oval on Friday, according to South African captain Faf du Plessis.Kagiso Rabada, at 22, has become the leader of the pace attack following an injury to Morne Morkel during South Africas 333-run win in the first Test in Potchefstroom.Mornes absence added to injuries which have kept Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Chris Morris out of action. In the absence of Morkel, Du Plessis hinted strongly that South Africa might pack their pace bowling attack, possibly bringing in uncapped Dane Paterson as well as left-handed all-rounder Wayne Parnell in order to have four front-line seam bowlers. The South African captain said he expected pitch conditions to give more encouragement to bowlers than in Potchefstroom.Theres not as much grass as there was a couple of days ago and its thin grass, but it hasnt been rolled as flat as Potch. Just playing in the nets and out there in the middle there was a little more pace and bounce.Looking to the future of South Africas attack, Du Plessis, 33, said age was a factor, with Steyn, Philander and Morkel all on the wrong side of 30.He said the bowlers would have to work a little harder in order to extend their careers, admitting: I need a 40-minute stretch before I can do anything. In the meantime, there were opportunities for the fast bowlers in action in Bloemfontein to stake their claim for future selection. With big players missing, it is really important to see what our resources are, said Du Plessis, who added that he was looking for another dominating performance to complete the two-match series.Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim did not hold a formal press conference but told Bangladesh journalists that Soumya Sarkar, who missed the first Test because of a shoulder injury, was fit. He is the likely replacement for experienced opening batsman Tamim Iqbal.Rahim said there was a possibility that there might be one or more changes to Bangladeshs seam bowling line-up.This is more of a South African wicket, said Rahim. It was more like our type of wicket in the previous game but we couldnt execute well. But it doesnt necessarily mean we cant play well in tough conditions. We lost badly in the first Test because we made silly mistakes.

Football: Disputed penalty lifts Syria World Cup hopes

Posted:

MALACCA (AFP) - Omar al-Somas disputed late penalty kept Syrias World Cup dream alive on Thursday as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Australia and set up a nerve-jangling play-off second leg in Sydney.Australia were left fuming by Somas crucial spot-kick in the 85th minute, after the towering forward was nudged mid-air by Mathew Leckie and Iranian referee Alireza Faghani pointed to the spot. The Syrian striker, who has only recently returned to the war-wracked team after a long absence believed to be for political reasons, confidently swept his penalty past Mathew Ryan to leave the tie on a knife-edge.Syria, playing their home games in Malaysia for security reasons, are seeking a fairytale debut World Cup appearance, while Asian champions Australia are being made to squirm as they attempt to qualify for their fourth in a row.The eventual winners after Tuesdays second leg in Sydney will face the CONCACAF federations fourth-placed team for a spot at next years World Cup in Russia.Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said he was bemused by the late penalty decision, which cancelled out Robbie Kruses first-half opener and came after Tomi Juric hit the same post twice in quick succession. Its a bit disappointing to concede a goal the way we did from a decision, he said. When a guy gets up and wins a header Im a bit bemused, but it is what it is.Kruse was far less diplomatic when he was quoted by Fox Sports as saying: Its never a pen, but you come to expect that in this (Asian) confederation.- We took control -Both teams made a cagey start in front of a sparse but Syrian-dominated crowd in sultry conditions at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca.Mark Milligans fizzing shot with the outside of his left boot tested Mahmoud al-Youssef on 19 minutes, while Soma provided Syrias chief threat at the other end.Leckie blasted over on 29 minutes before Soma twice set up Omar Khribin for opportunities that the in-form Al Hilal striker put wide of the Australian goal.Five minutes before half-time, Leckie created Australias opener when he received a ball down the right from Milos Degenek, cut inside and arrowed a shot which went in off the boot of Kruse. After the break, Juric was unlucky to see his shot come back off the woodwork -- and even unluckier when, bizarrely, he crashed the rebound off the same post. But Syria were looking dangerous and Khribin had a shot blocked by Leckie, before Soma headed a good chance over and was then denied an almost certain goal by Degeneks last-ditch lunge. As the game headed into the final quarter, Ouday Jaffal had a close-range free kick cleared off the line and Khribins deflected set piece sailed just wide.Syria should have been level on 78 minutes but Somas point-blank header was deflected onto the post in a reflex stop by Ryan. The critical moment came with six minutes to go, when Leckie made contact with Soma as they both leapt to head a high ball and Faghani blew for the penalty. In the dying exchanges, Trent Sainsbury had a close-range header saved and Ryan clawed away a Moayad al-Ajan shot, but they shared the spoils to set up Tuesdays tense decider in Sydney. In the first half we werent as good as we should, but in the second we took control of the match until the last minute, said Soma. The match in Australia will be difficult, in front of their supporters and at their home venue... but theres no impossible in football, he added.

Sri Lanka aim landmark Test series win over Pakistan in UAE

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Dinesh Chandimals Sri Lanka will look to become the first team to win a Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, when the second and final match starts in Dubai on Friday.Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, 39, was the catalyst for a 21-run victory in the first Test in Abu Dhabi on Monday, as he took 6-43 to foil Pakistans modest chase of 136.The narrow win gives Sri Lanka a unique chance for a series win over Pakistan at their neutral venues of the UAE, where they have never lost a series in nine attempts. They have won five and drawn four in the UAE since the 2009 terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus forced them to play home matches outside of Pakistan.Herath exposed the nominal hosts new batting line-up, shorn of batting greats Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq for the time since they retired in May.Sri Lankan skipper Chandimal said Pakistani batsmen struggle against Herath.Normally the Pakistan batters really struggle against the left-arm spinners. We all know Rangana is a legend so I am sure he will be a really good asset for this game as well, said Chandimal of his match-winner, who took his 400th Test wicket in Abu Dhabi.Herath also reached 100 wickets against Pakistan during the first Test, but Chandimal warned that the Sri Lankans opponents should not be taken lightly. We never underestimate Pakistan, they are a really good side, especially in the last couple of series they have played really good cricket, said Chandimal, whose team will replace Pakistan at sixth in the world rankings with a series win.Chandimal anchored the batting with a polished 155 not out in Sri Lankas first-innings total of 419, ably filling in for the more experienced Angelo Mathews, who didnt travel with the squad due to a calf injury. They are also likely to be without senior batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, who is suffering from a back problem and might be replaced by the uncapped Sadeera Samarawickrama.Pakistan will also be without seamer Hasan Ali, who has a side strain, with he will be replaced by left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz.Captain Sarfraz Ahmed hopes Pakistan move on from the defeat in his first Test as captain.Credit must be given to Herath the way he bowled, said Ahmed. We have never lost in UAE so its also important to keep that record intact, so for that we need to attack Herath and play with a positive mindset.Pakistan will also hope spearhead Mohammad Amir returns to form with the pink ball after going wicketless in the first Test.Debutant Haris Sohail provided a positive in the batting after scores of 76 and 34, while Azhar Ali hit 85.The match will be the sixth day-night Test after the first between Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide in 2015.Pakistan beat the West Indies in their first day-night Test at the same venue last year, but this will be Sri Lankas maiden pink-ball Test.Squads:Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Sami Aslam, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Asghar, Bilal Asif, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Wahab RiazSri Lanka: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Rangana Herath, Lakshan Sandakan, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru GamageUmpires: Nigel Llong (ENG) and Richard Kettleborough (ENG)Tv umpire: Sundaram Ravi (IND)ICC match referee: Andy Pycoft (ZIM)

CJ hints at ordering probe against Jahangir Tareen 'like Panama case'

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said on Thursday that Jahangir Tareen showed low income to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) while the income is listed high in documents of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), asking whether black money was converted white this way.Hearing the Jahangir Tareen disqualification case, CJ said they are in no compulsion of tax officials and can order investigation against Tareen as in Panama case. Justice Faisal Arab remarked that concerns of black money arise as Tareen showed high agricultural income. The court may order probe against the listed agricultural income of Tareen. His lawyer Sikandar Bashir responded that tax documents were attached with nomination papers for 2013 general elections.Justice Umar Ata Bandial also commented on the case saying Jahangir Tareen showed agricultural income of Rs 1.5 billion and he should provide record of lease in connection to the thousands of acres of land. Tareen’s lawyer reacted that his client paid the most amount of tax as compared to other parliamentarians. The tax matters are pending under relevant forum and no declaration can be issued against Tareen as of now, he added.Later on, Justice Faisal Arab opined that showing more agricultural income is a way of converting black money into white. He added that income earned through illegal sources is later shown legal by taking such measures. It was highlighted that Tareen remained federal minister for three years. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled on October 10.

British author Kazuo Ishiguro wins Nobel Literature Prize

Posted:

(AFP) - British author Kazuo Ishiguro, best known for his novel The Remains of the Day and whose emotional uprooting from his native Japan has left an indelible stamp on his work, won the 2017 Nobel Literature Prize on Thursday. The 62-year-old, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world, the Academy wrote in its citation.Contacted by the BBC, Ishiguro said he was flabbergastingly flattered by the award. Its a magnificent honour, mainly because it means that Im in the footsteps of the greatest authors that have lived. So thats a terrific commendation, he said.Ishiguro has written eight books as well as scripts for film and television. In 1989, he won the Man Booker Prize for The Remains of the Day, which was published the same year, and in 1995, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to literature. An exquisite novelistThis years laureate is a brilliant and even exquisite novelist, Sara Danius, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, told the TT news agency after the announcement. She called The Remains of the Day a masterpiece. It was huge already when it was released. The movie is good too. But it has grown with time, its a reflection of a class society that has disappeared, she added.Born in Nagasaki in 1954, nine years after the US dropped a nuclear bomb on the city, Ishiguro moved to Britain with his family when he was five years old. He only returned to visit Japan as an adult some three decades later. Both his first novel A Pale View of Hills from 1982 and the subsequent one, An Artist of the Floating World from 1986, take place in Nagasaki a few years after World War II.The themes Ishiguro is most associated with are already present here: memory, time, and self-delusion, the Academy said. This is particularly notable in his most renowned novel, The Remains of the Day, which was turned into a 1993 film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Charting the life of a painfully shy, duty-obsessed English butler, the film was nominated for eight Oscars.Ishiguros writings are marked by a carefully restrained mode of expression, independent of whatever events are taking place, the Academy said.I was taken awayIn a 1989 interview with Bomb Magazine, Ishiguro said: I tend to be attracted to pre-war and post-war settings because Im interested in this business of values and ideals being tested, and people having to face up to the notion that their ideals werent quite what they thought they were before the test came.In a 1991 interview with former Nobel laureate Kenzaburo Oe of Japan, he said the Japan he wrote about in An Artist In the Floating World was very much my own personal, imaginary Japan. This may have a lot to do with my own personal history. As a small child, I was taken away from the people I knew, like my grandparents and my friends.I couldnt forget Japan because I had to prepare myself for returning to it. So I grew up with a very strong image in my head of this other country, a very important other country to which I had a strong emotional tie, he said.Im beginning to see as I get older that my leaving Japan at the point when I did was, in complicated ways, a key defining thing, he said in a 1995 interview with the Financial Times.Emulating DylanHis more recent fiction contains elements of fantasy. With the critically-acclaimed dystopian work Never Let Me Go from 2005, Ishiguro introduced a cold undercurrent of science fiction into his work.Inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Marcel Proust, Ishiguros characters often painfully come to terms with who they are without closure. His latest novel, The Buried Giant from 2015 explores in a moving manner, how memory relates to oblivion, history to the present, and fantasy to reality, the Academy noted. In the book, an elderly couple go on a road trip through an archaic English landscape, hoping to reunite with their adult son, whom they have not seen for years. His publisher Faber & Faber wrote on Twitter after the announcement, Were THRILLED Kazuo Ishiguro has won the Nobel PrizeIshiguro, who early in his life wanted to be a rock star, a new Dylan or something, was not among those tipped as a favourite for this years Nobel. Now, he and Bob Dylan have something in common.Last year, the 18 members of the Swedish Academy stunned the world by awarding the prestigious honour to the American rock legend and counter-culture icon. The Nobel comes with a prize of nine million kronor ($1.1 million, 945,000 euros).Ishiguro will receive his prize at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10.

'If only I had wings': Trip to the Fairy Meadows

Posted:

By Annam LodhiJust 10 more minutes, said the local guide, as we stepped towards our destination. It was becoming darker now, not much moonlight either; we switch on our flashlights.I don’t even know what time it is, but it seems like we have been walking forever. Why didn’t I wear a watch? My cell is dead too.The local guide we hired looks scary under the starlight. His name is Ashraf; he has a squint eye, wearing a leather jacket over shalwar kameez, and rough loafers. He is carrying a lot of things, my bag pack which I had for the first couple of hours, some other shoppers and a small torch light. We hadn’t even stopped for a break. This wasn’t a stroll in the park; this was a steep rocky mountain, which had curves and thin passes that we had to cross, just to watch the land of the fairies. But right now that seemed like an eternity away. But let’s rewind a bit and restart my road trip from the land of the brave-hearted, Lahore to the Fairy Meadows.Off to the MeadowsOur journey began in Lahore at 10 pm on the night of March 4. We started from GT road. First stop was Mian Jee, located between Lala Musa and Kahria, where we had their finest desi ghee Dhal.We moved on to Abbottabad, about 6 hours drive and another 4 hours to Besham in Kybher Pakhtunkhwa. At Basham, we had lunch: fried fish with naan. Besham is the last town before the check post of Kohistan. The road towards Chilas, that highway is only accessible from 4am to 4pm each day.In Chilas or last stop was Raikoot, a small village about 2 hours away from the main city.Jeep track towards the fairy meadows track point. Photo: Annam LodhiAt Raikoot, we unloaded our bus on the Raikoot Bridge and sat on jeeps. These jeeps will take us to the Tato village which is about 16 to 18 km away. The track onwards was dangerous; it is one of the most dangerous commercial jeep tracks in the world, pursued only by these professional self-taught drivers. The road is as wide as the 4x4 jeeps. These jeeps are old, renovated and maintained by the local drivers to make the trip possible for tourists, the uneven track has been constructed by the natives; they also maintain it at their expense. The 16 km drive is covered in 2 hours. The ride is bumpy, there are no rails or stones at its edges; the road cuts through barren soaring mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Indus River flows beside it, these mountains are fascinating as well as life threatening. There are points where the jeep is in mid-air with only two wheels on the ground. After 2 hours on the gravel road and a couple of head injuries, we reached Tato. Here we hired 4 porters/guides. Each potter can carry up to 10 kg of weight; you can also get ponies here.TrekkingWe started at 5 pm, it wasn’t very cold. Even though we would be constantly walking it will become colder at night, the temperature can drop below zero at night. The trek is an adventure on its own, it is about 7 km long and steep. The locals take about an hour and a half to get to the meadows. For commoners with zero stamina, it will take about 4 to 6 hours. Ashraf told us that a couple once took 12 hours. We had our backpacks on and the guides had taken our luggage to the huts, they started with us but after a while had taken ahead.Wooden hut surrounded by a thick alpine forest. Photo: Annam LodhiWhen I asked Ashraf how much time would it take us he said, “It takes us 2 hours when it is snowy and an hour when the path is clear. You might take three hours if you do not stop.”So with Ashraf’s guidance, we started walking through the thick and thin of the path, through the forest and the snow, we jumped, flew and crossed frozen waterfalls to get there. And every time I asked how much further he would say, “Madam 5 minutes aur”.You have to take measured steps and keep walking, one can only stop and breathe for a minute or two but can never sit down; because if you sit down the already worked up muscles start cooling and it becomes harder. We are again in a rural area and it is important to understand the mindset of people here. The men of Gilgit respect women immensely, they also give them equity, which is an amazing find for a brown girl. Through my journey, I conversed with Ashraf who told me stories of his village where women did all the labour as men left for the cities. For our guides, we weren’t a cultural shock and my comfort level with them increased through the journey.Trekking in thick layers of snow. Photo: Annam LodhiWe hadn’t bought trekking sticks so we used branches. The sticks are used to check if the ground is soft, can be broken easily or if the snow has iced completely or not. Most of the path was clear, but at some narrow pathways, we had to check if the stone was strong enough to hold us. Because it was March, we faced hurdles, around the end of April the path is easier to trek.We kept taking small, steady and slow steps, even when crossing crucial and narrow paths we didn’t haste. Always look for footsteps on the ground, someone might have crossed the path before you and that’s how you figure if the path is safe. Take a step, stabilise it then take the next. The iced paths were harder; our guides helped us through them. It is vital to listen to what they say, place your foot exactly where he says and dont be scared of him, this practice is life-saving.At a point, I had to cross an icy wood plank, under which water from a melted glacier was flowing. The iced plank was straight beside which was a fallen tree. My guide asked me to cross through the tree which I thought was foolish; I tried crossing through the plank and fell in the water wetting myself. My journey onwards harder; my feet were numb due to the icy water and the cold weather.Surrounded by mountains covered in snow. Photo: Annam LodhiAnother moment was when we had to cross a glacier, which was iced. When in the snow, always walk on the soft snow and if you have to walk on the iced portion look for footprints. I asked him to hold my hand firmly or else I would fall. I would suggest if you want to see the majestic mountains give the man your hand and hold it tightly. At the 5th hour, I was on the verge of crying; I had fallen three times, was drenched knee below and felt very cold. When I saw the light of the hut, I was still a good 15 minutes away, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The air was icy; the stars bright, the moon right above us and the mountains, just a shadow. We rushed into our hut which was as warm as my mother’s hug, they had fired the furnace for us and the beds were ready. As soon as we were settled, they served us soup and tea inside our hut. There was enough wood in the furnace for the night and we slept like a baby.Waking up facing the Killer Mountain of the North ignites a sense of accomplishment, a dream which you haven’t dreamt materialises. I do not feel as cold as I had imaged, the snow is white, so white I can’t believe my eyes; as I stood there mesmerised by the beauty a brush of cold breeze shocks me giving me instant goose-bumps, I looked at my hands, my nails had turned blue. I rushed into the hut to wear a pair of gloves, beanie, and coat. Was it the cold or the realisation that I have witnessed that majestic killer mountain, called Nanga Parbat?A breathtaking view of the mountains. Photo: Annam LodhiThere aren’t enough adjectives to describe its beauty. The Parbat is frightening, it stands tall and firm; its peaks are covered in the whitest of snow, with clean hues of blues, silver and some purple. The sun touched its topmost peaks making it shine like gold. The ninth highest mountain in the world showed no signs of humanity, it was above it.The meadows, called Joot by the locals, are a blanket of lush green in summers, but in March its mostly covered in snow, some mud puddles and paths of grass. It is basically a small patch of even ground surrounded by towering trees. This is the first base camp towards Nanga Parbat. The area was noiseless; our laughter echoed through the forest and mountains. The washrooms are a mess because of the low temperatures everything freezes; the guides melted ice on the stove every time we wanted to use the washroom. The meadows during the day. Photo: Annam LodhiAt 26,000 ft everything is done using wood, there is also zilch contact with the outside world. It is easier for the men who can relieve themselves anywhere. Girls can do that too but well, it’s scary. So I always travel will my sanitary items, which include napkins, wet wipes, sanitizers, tissues, antiseptic creams, cranberry juice and antiseptic spray. But with the nature that surrounds you, the washroom will be the last of your issues. As the sun turned the path muddy, we had to adhere to the meadows and couldn’t stroll around much.Having a warm, freshly prepared breakfast by our local guides. Photo: Annam LodhiAfter two nights, on the morning of the second day, we headed back down. It was one of the hardest goodbyes, the beautiful Parbat gleamed; the most beautiful things are the ones untouched I thought. The journey back was easier, we were somewhat familiar with what was to come, still, some sheer drops of the cliff made us gasp. The snow had reached our knees; we had to stride through it but stopped to snow fight for a while. We reached back in about 3 hours. As we sat in our jeeps and headed back, I pondered that the most beautiful memories in life are the one that you worked the hardest for. I believe inaccessibility is what makes things desirable and I hope people who do visit keep in mind that its part of their country and heritage; it is up to them keep it clean and raw for the generations to come. The entire group.
