Ton-up Babar helps Pakistan ease past Sri Lanka

DUBAI (AFP) - Babar Azam scored an impressive hundred while Shoaib Malik smashed a quickfire half century to help Pakistan thump Sri Lanka by 83 runs in the first one-day international in Dubai on Friday.Azam compiled a well-made 103 from 131 deliveries, while Maliks 81 came off only 61 balls in Pakistans total of 292-6, before pacemen Hasan Ali (3-36) and Rumman Raees (3-49) restricted Sri Lanka to 209-8 from their 50 overs. The victory was a good response by Pakistan after losing the preceding two-match Test series 2-0, in their first ODI since winning the Champions Trophy in England four months ago.Lahiru Thirimanne was the only Sri Lankan top-order batsman who played with any authority for his 53 as Pakistan took regular wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.Akila Dananjaya (50 not out) and Jeffrey Vandersay (25) delayed the result as they took Sri Lanka from 132-7 to 200-8 during their 68-run eighth-wicket stand but it was too little, too late.Left-armer Raees broke a quick 30-run opening partnership as he removed Niroshan Dickwella (19) and Dinesh Chandimal in successive overs, while Mohammad Hafeez dismissed captain Upul Tharanga for 18.Medium pacer Ali had two wickets off two balls as he dislodged Kusal Mendis and Milinda Siriwardana to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 67-5.Raees returned for his second spell to trap Thirimanne leg before to end Sri Lankas hopes of a successful chase.Thirimanne hit three boundaries in his 74-ball stay.Pakistan, sent into bat, owed their total to Azam and Malik, who added 139 for the fourth wicket.Malik holed out in the 47th over after smashing five fours and two sixes.Malik, declared man of the match, said he was happy to do the job.I always try to bat as per the requirement of the team and I am happy I did that today as well, said Malik. Babar played well and Hafeez played a little cameo which set us well.Azams hundred came off 128 balls in the next over with a single, but three runs later he miscued a drive off paceman Suranga Lakmal, who finished with 2-47 from his ten overs.Azam, who hit only five boundaries, had managed a poor 38 runs in the preceding 2-0 Test-series defeat but batted with guts to prove his credentials as a limited-overs batsman.Pakistan plundered 89 in the last ten overs. The nominal hosts got off to a poor start when opener Ahmed Shehzad fell for a 12-ball duck, caught off Lahiru Gamage in the fourth over of the innings.Fakhar Zaman and Azam took the total to 75 before Akila Dananjaya bowled the opener with a googly. The left-handed Zaman played well during his 45-ball 42 though, hitting four fours and a six.The remaining matches will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 16 and 18) and Sharjah (October 20 and 23).

Refugees take northern French town to cricket glory

Posted:

SAINT-OMER (AFP) - On a rugby field overlooked by a towering cathedral, a group of young refugees has introduced a small northern French town to the beautiful game of... cricket.Saint-Omer lies 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the Channel port of Calais, the main launchpad for attempts by migrants to smuggle themselves into England. As in many western European towns and cities, the integration of migrants is creating new challenges. But thanks to its new arrivals, Saint-Omer has become a rare centre of cricketing excellence in a country where football and rugby dominate. The town broke new ground in September when a group of Afghan and Pakistani refugees wearing the colours of the Saint-Omer Cricket Club Stars (Soccs) brought home the regional Hauts-de-France cricket title.I didnt know people played cricket in France said Ataullah Otmankhil, a devotee of the sport from northern Afghanistan with short, gelled hair and a trim beard. When the athletic 21-year-old set out from his war-torn country for Europe on foot, by train, truck, car, you name it, his heart was set on reaching England. But his dreams of starting a new life in the home of Lords Cricket Ground came crashing down on the shores of the Channel.Day after day for six months he tried to clamber aboard a truck heading across the sea from Calais -- to no avail. When the squalid and sprawling, informal Jungle migrant camp was dismantled in Calais last year, and its occupants relocated around the country, Otmankhil was placed with a host family and began studying to become an electrician.Picking up a bat again brings back memories of home, he said -- a sentiment echoed by his 16-year-old Afghan teammate Oriakhil Shahid.About 30 refugees, all from either Afghanistan or Pakistan whose ages range from 15 to 32, have joined the club, which has yet to attract any locals among its members. For Oriakhil, one of the youngest, the club is like family. Its for everybody, French, Afghan and others. But the sight of foreigners dashing around the rugby field, bats in hand, has not gladdened the hearts of all in this town of 16,000 souls, situated in the northern heartland of the anti-immigration National Front.Sometimes I get insults, aimed at me personally or the club, said Nicolas Rochas, one of a handful of volunteers who is trying to help the migrants integrate. The pressure to ensure the players are above reproach at all times is acute. As a club with young refugees we have an even greater duty to be exemplary on and off the pitch, he admitted. So far the efforts of both volunteers and players appear to be bearing fruit. All the team members have a roof over their heads, are either working or in school and wear their clubs navy jersey with its crest of crossed bats with pride.Less than a year after being created, the club managed to win the regional title giving the players a pass into Frances third division.Despite the opportunity however, the Soccs have decided to stay out of the big league for now. They want to up their game first, starting by having a proper cricket ground slated for early 2018.Taking their adopted town to regional glory has already given the players a confidence boost.Rochas, who had to learn cricket on the fly, hopes it will endure. The challenge for every sporting association is to last over the years. Our players are young, which is an advantage. The disadvantage is that cricket is a relatively unknown sport (in France), he said.Oriakhil is hopeful that further glory lies ahead. We will play well, God willing, he said.

India-Australia final T20 abandoned

HYDERABAD (AFP) - The third and deciding Twenty20 international between India and Australia was abandoned without a ball being bowled after officials called off play due to a wet outfield in Hyderabad Friday.India skipper Virat Kohli and Australias stand-in captain David Warner shared the honours with the series ending drawn 1-1.Intermittent rain over the past few days in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad caused wet patches on the ground that refused to dry despite the best efforts of the groundstaff. The umpires waited for over two hours for conditions to improve, but had to finally call off the game without the near-capacity crowd at the Uppal Stadium even witnessing a toss. The visitors had levelled the T20 series in Guwahati on Tuesday after a largely disappointing Indian tour that saw them lose the preceding one-day internationals 4-1.India won the rain-hit T20 opener by nine wickets in Ranchi before the visitors made a remarkable comeback with their eight-wicket win in what turned out to be the final game.Australia also suffered a major blow ahead of the T20 matches after regular skipper Steve Smith pulled out with an injured shoulder and flew back home. The Aussies, who lost the Test series in India 2-1 in March, now head into the Ashes, with the first Test against England starting November 23.Meanwhile India are set to host New Zealand for three ODIs and three T20 matches starting October 22 in Mumbai.

UN chief hopes Iran nuclear deal with survive

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres very much hopes the nuclear deal with Iran can be salvaged, a spokesman said Friday, as President Donald Trump was set to de-certify the 2015 agreement.UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres considers the deal to be a very important breakthrough to consolidate nuclear non-proliferation and advance global peace and security. The secretary-general very much hopes that it will remain in place, Dujarric added.Trump is to unveil a more aggressive US strategy toward Iran that would stop short of withdrawing from the landmark accord but would declare that the deal is no longer in the US national interest. The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by Iran and six powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- under the previous administration of Barack Obama.Trumps move could open the door to renewing US sanctions on Iran, a measure that diplomats say would lead to the collapse of the deal.UN inspectors have said that Iran is complying with the agreement including its restrictions on uranium enrichment.Guterres has repeatedly praised the JCPOA as a major diplomatic achievement and called for the agreement to be fully implemented. The deal was enshrined in a Security Council resolution that was unanimously adopted in July 2015.

UK couple jailed in latest holiday sickness scam

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - A British couple were jailed Friday for making fake holiday sickness claims in a case that authorities hope will the end the explosion of fake food poisoning cases.Deborah Briton, 53, and partner Paul Roberts, 43, claimed they and their two children had fallen ill during holidays to Spains Majorca in 2015 and 2016.Judge David Aubrey at Liverpool Crown Court ruled that the claims were a complete and utter sham as he sentenced Briton to nine months in jail, and Roberts to 15 months. You were both asserting on your behalfs and on behalf of your two children that on two separate holidays you had suffered illness. They were totally and utterly fake, said the judge. The couple, who tried to tried to claim nearly 20,000 ($26,600, 22,500 euros) in compensation, admitted four counts of fraud in the private prosecution brought by holiday firm Thomas Cook.Judge Aubrey said he hoped the ruling would bring to an end the explosion in similar cases. Those who may be tempted in the future to make a dishonest claim in relation to fake holiday sickness, if they are investigated and brought to justice, whatever the circumstances of an individual, he or she must expect to receive an immediate custodial sentence, he said.A Thomas Cook spokesperson said the ruling demonstrates how serious the issue of fraudulent illness claims has become. We had to take a stand to protect our holidays and our customers from the minority who cheat the system. We hope it sends a clear message to holidaymakers across the UK that the consequences for lying about their experience abroad could be very serious.Britains Ministry of Justice earlier this month launched a Call for Evidence on holiday sickness claims, which it said had risen seven-fold in three years.Tour operators traditionally settled such claims out of court to avoid becoming embroiled in foreign legal systems, where legal costs can escalate.
