Bishoo spins West Indies to win over Zimbabwe

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - Legspinner Devendra Bishoo proved Zimbabwes nemesis once more as he spun the West Indies to a 117-run victory in the first Test at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.Bishoo followed up his 5 for 79 in the first innings with figures of 4 for 105 in the second, as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 316 to lose the match inside four days. While Zimbabwe were once again guilty of some soft dismissals, which included two calamitous run-outs, Bishoo played a key role in slicing through the Zimbabwean middle order. After seeing how Zimbabwe bowled on the first day, I knew I would have a big role to play in the match, said Bishoo. But it was important to be patient on this pitch, and stick to a plan. After putting up more of a fight with the bat in their second innings, when Brendan Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza scored half-centuries, Zimbabwe were left to rue their performance on the second day when they were bowled out for 159 in reply to West Indies first innings of 219.We had a really good opportunity there to go and put some runs on the board and put them under pressure, but we had too many soft dismissals on day two, said Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer, whose legspin claimed eight wickets in the match. We couldnt quite work out how to score against their bowlers on this wicket.Once the West Indies had scored 373 in their second innings, which was wrapped up when Roston Chase fell for 95 on the fourth morning, Zimbabwes challenge was a world-record chase of 434 to win. They made a bright start, with Masakadza and Solomon Mire putting on 99 for the first wicket at a brisk rate, before both openers fell in quick succession.Masakadza was caught at short leg for 57 - his first half-century in almost three years - before Mire (47) was undone by some sharp reverse swing from fast bowler Kemar Roach.Although Taylor was able to keep out the remainder of Roachs fierce spell, Craig Ervine was trapped lbw by Bishoo, who went on to have Sean Williams stumped by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and leave Zimbabwe 155 for four.A 64-run stand for the fifth wicket between Taylor and Sikandar Raza gave Zimbabwe a glimmer of hope, only for the hosts to be derailed by a series of soft dismissals.Raza hit a Bishoo long-hop straight to cover, before Malcolm Waller and Taylor were both run out, with Taylor, who made 73, culpable for both dismissals. There was still time for a bit of fun, as final pair Chris Mpofu and Kyle Jarvis hit eight boundaries in a stand of 55 - a record for the 10th wicket at Queens Sports Club. But when Mpofu was caught on the boundary off the bowling of Chase for 33, the West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The second Test gets underway at the same venue on Sunday.

Lehmann says he may ditch limited-overs role

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia coach Darren Lehmann Tuesday said an increasingly punishing cricket calendar may leave him with no choice but to hand over responsibility for the countrys one-day and Twenty20 sides, leaving him to focus solely on Tests.Health issues and a heavy workload has seen the 47-year-old miss several one-day and Twenty20 series in recent years, including the just-ended limited-overs tour of India. He returns to lead Australia in the upcoming Ashes series against England, but sees a time when there is one coach for Tests and another for ODIs and T20s.I think it will get to a stage where Ill probably have to look at changing that set-up, he told cricket.com.au.I know speaking to (former England coach) Andy Flower for example... he didnt like it so much, but I think the way that the game is going, youve got no choice now.Under Flower, England experimented with having a separate limited-overs coach, but the roles have since been combined again under Trevor Bayliss.Lehmann, who has coached Australia since 2013, said he would favour splitting duties between Tests and limited-overs, rather than having three coaches for the games different formats. You cant split them three ways -- Tests, one-dayers and T20, Lehmann said. Some of the time theres no point another coach coming in, its just logistical nightmares, so I think youd probably go white ball, red ball.Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Jason Gillespie and David Saker are seen as potential candidates should Cricket Australia opt to divide the head coach roles. The path is already well trodden by players, with many specialising in either Tests or ODI/T20s, although plenty still excel in both.Lehmann said he could envisage the day when there were entirely separate XIs for each format.Cricket is really getting specialised. You can see a time when down the track... I dont know how many years but therell be really significant changes and the XIs will be separate for each format or in red-ball and white-ball cricket, he said. And thats happening now anyway, just because its the only way you can keep the players on the park.He acknowledged such a system could also problems, but insisted it was feasible.Youve got big tournaments which are really important to win and your best side has to be available, he said. And theres always different stories, (such as) how (can) the young guys get an opportunity at the next level if you dont give them the opportunity when you get a chance? So theres pros and cons everywhere -- its just how you balance it out.

Williams survives three-hour Ostapenko epic

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Ageless Venus Williams revived her WTA Finals campaign with an epic three-hour, three-set victory over error-prone Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday, dealing a big blow to the French Open champions hopes. The 37-year-old world number five rebounded from her opening defeat to Karolina Pliskova with a marathon 7-5, 6-7 (7/3), 7-5 win over three hours and 13 minutes -- just one minute shy of the record played at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The round robin match was strewn with no fewer than 20 breaks of serve, with Williams capturing 11 of them -- enough to edge her to a victory that ensures she stays in the season finale. It was relief for the American, who let slip a match point in the second set but summoned up all her experience to stay cool when she got another opportunity in the third.During the 69-minute third set, which included six consecutive breaks, Williams clinched the decisive break in the 11th game and then clinically held serve to outlast the Latvian. It maintained Williams perfect record over Ostapenko, having won their only encounter earlier this year at Wimbledon. The result will sting for Ostapenko who started brightly, working Williams around the court and hitting the lines with precision, notably several piercing cross-court winners. The 20-year-old delivered 12 of the first 13 winners in the match before her confidence nosedived as she struggled with her serve.Even though she had a major 48-26 advantage in winners, Ostapenko had only a 46 percent success rate with her first serve, and dished up 13 double faults.

Cyber attack hits Russia, Ukraine

Posted:

KIEV (AFP) - A cyber attack Monday hit a Ukrainian international airport and three Russian media outlets just four months after the NotPetya malware spread from two countries across the world.Ukraines Odessa International Airport said on Facebook that its information system stopped functioning in the afternoon. All airport services are working in a reinforced security regime, the airport said without elaborating. Its website showed air traffic going in and out of the Black Sea resort city according to schedule.Russias Interfax news agency -- one of the countrys biggest -- also sent its last dispatch at 2:13 pm (1113 GMT) before falling silent.A cyber security expert told AFP that the Fontanka news site in Russias second city of Saint Petersburg and a third media outlet whose name, unfortunately, we cannot reveal at this time had also gone off line.We cannot say what it is at the moment, Yevgeny Gukov of the Group-IB IT security firm said in Moscow.Gukov said the malware appeared to be using an encryption scheme that prevented analysts from deciphering the malicious code.A statement later issued by Group-IB said the attack appeared to have its origins in Russia and had also affected some corporate sites in Turkey and Germany. This ransomware infects devices through a number of hacked Russian media websites, Group-IB said.Based on our investigation, this has been a targeted attack against corporate networks, using methods similar to those used during the (NotPetya) attack. The July NotPetya attack was a modified version of the Petya ransomware that hit last year and demanded money from victims in exchange for the return of their computer data.
