Mourinho fumes as loss lets Man City pull away

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho lambasted his Manchester United players after Saturdays shock 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town enabled Manchester City to move five points clear at the Premier League summit.Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre scored at the John Smiths Stadium to give Huddersfield a first win over United since 1952 and condemn Mourinhos side to their first loss of the campaign. Its another chapter in the fairytale we started nearly two years ago, said Huddersfields German manager David Wagner.Today was our moment. It makes everyone very happy and very proud.City took full advantage of Uniteds slip by beating Burnley 3-0, with Sergio Aguero equalling Eric Brooks club scoring record of 177 goals.Defending champions Chelsea closed to within four points of second-place United by beating Watford 4-2 and Tottenham Hotspur can draw level with Mourinhos men if they beat Liverpool on Sunday.Uniteds defeat followed their 0-0 draw at Liverpool last weekend and a laboured 1-0 victory away to Benfica in the Champions League.A furious Mourinho said: When I lose matches, I like to lose because the opponent was better, had more quality. When you lose because of attitude, that is really bad.Things started to go wrong for United in the 23rd minute when Phil Jones was forced off by an apparent hip injury, with Victor Lindelof taking his place.Huddersfield went ahead five minutes later when Australian Mooy, a former City player, robbed Juan Mata and followed in to score after David de Gea had saved from Tom Ince.Lindelof was at fault as Depoitre added a second in the 33rd minute, his failure to cut out goalkeeper Jonas Lossls kick allowing Depoitre to round De Gea and score.United substitute Marcus Rashford headed in Romelu Lukakus cross with 12 minutes remaining, but Huddersfield held firm for a famous win.Pep Guardiolas City have won their last 11 games in all competitions, equalling the club record, and have scored 20 goals in their last four home matches in the league.Argentina striker Aguero netted from the spot on the half hour after Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was contentiously adjudged to have fouled Bernardo Silva.- Batshuayi lifts Chelsea -Second-half goals from Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane completed victory.Im so happy to continue our winning mentality, said Guardiola.Of course it is not easy to win 11 in a row, so its good.Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to inspire Chelsea to a 4-2 home win over Watford that lifted some of the pressure on manager Antonio Conte.Beaten in their two previous league games, Chelsea took a 12th-minute lead when Pedro curled a magnificent effort into the top-left corner.Goals either side of the interval from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Roberto Pereyra put Marco Silvas hard-working visitors in front. But Batshuayi headed in a 71st-minute equaliser and after Cesar Azpilicueta put Chelsea in front late on, Batshuayi completed victory in stoppage time. The performance was a good performance because to concede the equaliser at the end of the first half and then go down in the first part of the second half, our confidence in that moment was low, said Conte. But my players showed me that we have the attitude to fight and change the situation and get a different result. After the sacking of Craig Shakespeare, Michael Appleton begin his stint as Leicester City caretaker manager with a 2-1 win at Swansea City.A Federico Fernandez own goal and a Shinji Okazaki effort put Leicester 2-0 up before Alfie Mawson replied for Swansea.Junior Stanislas teed up Andrew Surman and scored a penalty to give Bournemouth a 2-1 victory at Stoke City, who reduced the deficit through Mame Biram Diouf.Mikel Merinos late header earned Newcastle United a 1-0 home win over bottom club Crystal Palace.A staggering 70-yard solo goal by Sofiane Boufal in the 85th minute brought Southampton a 1-0 victory at home to West Bromwich Albion.

15 Afghan army cadets killed in terrorist attack on minibus

KABUL (AFP) - A suicide bomber killed 15 Afghan army trainees as they travelled home from their base in Kabul on Saturday, officials said, as militants intensify a deadly rampage that has claimed more than 200 lives this week.It was the second suicide bombing in the Afghan capital in 24 hours and the seventh major assault in Afghanistan since Tuesday, capping one of the bloodiest weeks in the war-weary country in recent memory. The latest attack comes after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a Shiite mosque during evening prayers in Kabul on Friday, killing 56 people and wounding 55 others in an assault claimed by the Islamic State group. In an email to journalists the Taliban said it was responsible for the ambush on the army cadets, taking to five the number of attacks on police and military bases this week that involved the insurgents. This afternoon when a minibus carrying army cadets was coming out of the military academy, a suicide bomber on foot targeted them, martyring 15 and wounding four, defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told AFP.Kabul Crime Branch chief General Mohammad Salim Almas said police have launched an investigation into the attack which happened in the west of the city. The minibus was carrying army trainees to their homes from Marshal Fahim military academy, Almas told AFP.Security forces blocked the road leading to the scene of the attack as firefighters hosed down the asphalt. The spate of deadly attacks underscores deteriorating security across Afghanistan as the resurgent Taliban step up their assaults on security installations to devastating effect and the Islamic State group targets Shiite mosques.NATOs Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan tweeted that the assault on the army trainees was an attack on the future of the country and its security forces. This attack in Kabul shows the insurgents are desperate and cannot win against Afghanistans security and defence forces, it said.It was the fifth time since Tuesday that the Taliban have launched a major attack against Afghanistans beleaguered security forces, which are already badly demoralised by high casualties and desertions. In the deadliest of the recent attacks, around 50 Afghan soldiers were killed in an assault on a military base in the southern province of Kandahar on Thursday.Insurgents blasted their way into the compound using at least one explosives-laden Humvee -- a tactic used in three separate attacks this week -- officials said. The militants then razed the base in the Chashmo area of Maiwand district to the ground, according to the defence ministry. On the same day Taliban militants besieged a police headquarters in the southeastern province of Ghazni, attacking it for the second time this week.Afghan security forces have faced soaring casualties in their attempts to hold back the insurgents since NATO combat forces pulled out of the country at the end of 2014.Casualties leapt by 35 percent in 2016, with 6,800 soldiers and police killed, according to US watchdog SIGAR.The insurgents have carried out more complex attacks against security forces in 2017, with SIGAR describing troop casualties in the early part of the year as shockingly high. The attacks included assaults on a military hospital in Kabul in March which may have killed up to 100 people, and on a base in Mazar-i-Sharif in April which left 144 people dead.

Bitcoin soars to record high above $6,000

Posted:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bitcoin surged to a record high of more than $6,000 on Friday, pushing its market capitalization to $100 billion at one point, as investors continued to bet on an asset that has a limited supply and has paved the way for a whole slew of crypto-currencies.The original virtual currency has gained over 500 percent this year, more than any other tradable asset class. Bitcoin though is very volatile - posting gains and losses as high as 26 percent and 16 percent respectively on any given day.On Friday, bitcoin hit a record peak $6,000.10 BTC=BTSP on the BitStamp platform, and was last at $5,964.24, up 4.7 percent on the day.Bitcoin is a digital currency that can either be held as an investment, or used as a foundation for future applications through the blockchain, its underlying technology. The blockchain is a digital ledger of transactions. It is more scarce though than most people realize. The number of bitcoins in existence is not expected to exceed 21 million.Analysts said it was a combination of factors that drove Friday’s surge in price.Charles Hayter, co-founder of data analysis website Cryptocompare in London said hopes that China will soften its regulatory stance on crypto-currencies helped bitcoin’s cause.“As China ... fears fade, the price is unlocked and driven by demand and buyers entering the markets,” said Hayter.Over the summer, China has banned the practice of raising capital through the sale of tokens to the public in what is known as initial coin offerings. It has also ordered the shutdown of digital currency exchanges. But many in the market believe the Chinese ban is temporary.“China would not want to be left out of the digital currency market nor the development of blockchain applications in general,” said Jason English, vice president of Protocol Marketing, at Sweetbridge, a global alliance in Zug, Switzerland that aims to use blockchain to create a liquid supply chain.“As much as 60 percent of the world’s bitcoin mining is happening in China, and therefore, many of the large ... investments in ICO projects have also been coming from crypto-currency holders in China, whether directly or indirectly,” English added.Sean Walsh, a partner at venture capital firm Redwood City, Ventures in Redwood City, California, also believes investors have been going back into bitcoin given the still uncertain global regulatory environment on crypto-currencies.A big part of bitcoin’s recent surge was the ICO craze, which exploded this year. Bitcoins and ether, another digital currency, are used to purchase tokens for ICOs.
