SHARJAH (Dunya News/Agencies) – Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in the fourth One-Day International of the five-match series in Sharjah today (Friday), Dunya News reported.Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, wanted his team to keep its ruthless approach despite having taken an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.Pakistan thumped a sloppy Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the third match in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday on the back of a career-best 5 for 34 by Hasan Ali and a hundred on debut by opener Imam-ul-Haq, thus winning its seventh match in a row.Sri Lanka, which suffered its tenth successive defeat, was bowled out for 209 in the penultimate over before Imams hundred saw Pakistan through in the 43rd over.Sarfraz termed the ODI series win as a great fightback after losing the preceding two-match Test series 2-0.Its a matter of great happiness that we have won the series 3-0, but I hope that we will play the remaining matches with the same spirit, said Sarfraz. It is a good comeback after the Test series loss; we have done well in all departments.Pakistan won the first match by 83 runs in Dubai before clinching the second in Abu Dhabi by 32 runs.Sarfraz praised his young players, led by Hasan. “Both Hasan and Shadab Khan (the leg-spinner) are going well and improving day by day. They are learning from their mistakes and it’s a welcome sign that they are improving. Babar Azam is doing well, so it’s great to have them (the young guns) in the side.He singled out Imam as one for the future. “I am happy for Imam, it was his first match and he scored a hundred, which is great,” said Sarfraz. “I pray that he keeps doing well and wins us matches with his performances.Pakistan is likely to test its bench strength in the remaining matches with Usman Shinwari, the left-arm fast bowler, in the fray.Nic Pothas, the Sri Lanka coach, wanted his team to stem the rot. “I’d just like to see a bit more fight, said Pothas. I am not seeing that character coming out at the moment and I hope we do it sooner than later.Sri Lanka suffered its first-ever ODI series loss to Zimbabwe 2-3 in July before going down 0-5 to India in August-September. It is due to tour India next month for three Tests, and as many ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals. We can have so many meetings and that many practices, but once you cross that line, you need to show a little bit of fight,” added Pothas. “It’s a tough situation. I agree that we have been there. We have seen the same thing happening over and over again, and something needs to change soon.Sri Lanka has Seekkuge Prassana, the leg-spinning all-rounder, on the bench and may bring him in place of the struggling Milinda Siriwardana.Teams (from):Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Ahmed Shehzad, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Usman Shinwari, Rumman Raees, Junaid Khan, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq.Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga (capt), Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickwella(wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Milinda Siriwardana, Chamara Kapugedara, Thisara Perera, Seekuge Prasanna, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando, Akila Dananjaya, Jeffrey Vandersay.

Imam ready to follow uncle Inzamam's footsteps

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan crickets newest discovery Imam-ul-Haq has some very large footsteps to follow in -- those of his uncle, the great Inzamam-ul-Haq.But Imam wasted no time in getting started, smashing a match-winning century on his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, becoming only the second Pakistani and 13th batsman in the world to achieve the feat.As a child, Imam would receive guidance from Inzamam on the field, his father helping him skip school against his mothers wishes. He went on to wear Pakistani colours at junior level, impressing in the 2014 Junior World Cup.Imams run of form continued at domestic level and two centuries in the Under-23 Emerging Cup in Bangladesh this year elevated him to Pakistans one-day side.I am proud to score a hundred on debut, said Imam, now 22. When I was told that I achieved the honour of scoring a debut hundred I felt more proud to do this feat for my country.Saleem Elahi is the only other Pakistani to hit a debut century, also against Sri Lanka at Gujranwala in 1995.Its not only Imams style of play that is similar to his uncle. His stocky build and cherubic face resembles that of a young Inzamam, who once famously hit an Indian spectator after being called Aloo (potato). The obvious difference is that Imam wears glasses -- a rare sight in cricket these days -- and bats left-handed. But the similarity to Inzamam is significant.Inzi uncle has been a great influence. Whenever I need help in batting he gives me time and always tells me to be positive, play brave cricket and believe in destiny, said Imam. But having a cricket great for an uncle has its challenges, particularly as Inzamam heads the selection committee which chose the current one-day squad.Imams selection was criticised but the youngster justified his place. Its not my fault that I am his nephew, Imam said. I cant help that. The best for me is to answer my critics with my bat and I have done that.It makes no difference to me because I have grown up in a (cricketing) family. I have self-belief and I am mature and I have played in Junior World Cups and have performed well to win in domestic matches.Imams century in the third one-day international looked in doubt when he was given out caught behind on 89.He was trudging back when his batting partner Mohammad Hafeez stopped him to check the legality of the catch.Television umpire Richard Kettleborough declared that the ball had touched the ground before reaching the wicketkeepers gloves, allowing a relieved Imam to return to the crease and complete his century.Obviously it was bad feeling, Imam said. I knew that I had nicked it, so I thought its out and I have lost a chance to score a hundred. But when I knew that it was not out I felt like I was given a new life.Imam has a long way to go, but his first knock at the international level proved that he has plenty of potential to make a name for himself, just like his famous uncle.

Obama returns to political arena for key governor races

Posted:

RICHMOND, United States (AFP) - Barack Obama is returning to the political arena for the first time in months after keeping a low profile and avoiding direct confrontation with his White House successor. The 56-year-old former president is scheduled to attend campaign rallies in New Jersey and Virginia on Thursday to support Democratic party candidates for governor.Voters in both states will decide the gubernatorial contests on November 7, one year after Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton and stormed into the White House on a wave of anti-establishment fury. The races are a potential indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, which will be a major test for Trump and his Republican party.Political science professor Larry Sabato said the New Jersey and Virginia governor races are the only big elections for 2017.Whats at stake is bragging rights headed into the 2018 midterm elections, Sabato told AFP.It is unclear what Obamas message will be. The former US leader has remained largely detached from the political debate since leaving office on January 20, in keeping with presidential tradition.Trump has meanwhile used his first nine months in the White House to methodically demolish key Obama administration policies. After three months of vacation Obama began writing his memoirs. He has said little in public and granted almost no interviews. The few times Obama broke his silence was to comment on issues of national importance, such as immigration, health care and climate change. But the 44th president may be tempted on Thursday to take aim at Trump, who has frequently and publicly excoriated his predecessor.- Test for Trump -In New Jersey, the post of governor will almost certainly go to Democrat Philip Murphy, who would succeed Chris Christie, a Trump ally whose popularity has plummeted to record lows.New Jersey is a runaway win for the Democrats, so Virginia is the only competitive contest. Obama is needed much more in Richmond than Trenton, said Sabato, referring to the capitals of the two states.Virginia is a pivotal state and the only southern US state that Clinton won in 2016. Its importance is amplified by its proximity to the US capital. If the GOP loses in Virginia, Trump will be widely blamed since he is so unpopular in a state carried by Hillary Clinton, Sabato said.Should the Republicans win Virginias governorship, then Trump will not be viewed as such a liability for the GOP in 2018.In Richmond, Obama will back Ralph Northam, a former military doctor who was credited Wednesday with a slight lead over Republican Ed Gillespie in a Quinnipiac poll.Obamas impending arrival in the city of over 220,000 people sparked long lines of people seeking tickets.More than six hours ahead of the event, Washington student Lucas Anderton was in the queue. Its important for me, hes my hero and so its nice to see him out in the battle again, Anderton said. The Hillary Clinton era lost a lot of the Democratic base that Obama had built up, so hopefully having Obama campaigning for him will help build that base back up.Well aware of the votes importance, Trump has backed Gillespie and accused Northam of fighting for the violent MS-13 Hispanic gang, as well as sanctuary cities that offer shelter to illegal immigrants.Gillespie, a former advisor to president George W. Bush who has become a millionaire lobbyist, has so far kept a cautious distance from the mercurial Trump, whose backing recently failed to ensure the election of his pick in a Republican Senate race in Alabama.

Dutch family sells everything to bet on bitcoins

Posted:

THE HAGUE (AFP) - A Dutch family has sold virtually all they own, including a business, their home, two cars and a motorbike and invested the takings in bitcoin just as the virtual currency is soaring to new heights. We are putting everything into bitcoin, weve sold everything to invest in this currency, Didi Taihuttu told AFP.The 39-year-old is currently living in a camping ground with his family, aiming to put as much money as possible to one side and transform it into bitcoin.Having turned his back on a materialistic life three months ago, Taihuttu and his wife and three daughters, aged 12, 10 and seven, are living in a small holiday chalet in a camping ground in eastern Venlo and are watching their savings grow every minute somewhere on the cloud.Bitcoin, a crypto currency created from computer code, was worth only a few US cents when it was launched in February 2009 by someone using the Japanese-sounding name Satoshi Nakamoto.Unlike a real-world unit such as the US dollar or euro, bitcoin has no central bank and is not backed by any government and is not generally recognised as a currency. But bitcoins can be exchanged for goods and services -- or for other currencies -- provided the other party is willing to accept them.Last week, it surged through the $5,000 level for the first time since its launch -- representing a rise of more than 400 percent just this year. Its the currency of the future, said Taihuttu, who is an IT specialist and until recently ran a company employing 16 people. We are taking part in a revolution, or an evolution of the monetary system, he added, predicting that by 2020 the bitcoin will probably be worth 25,000 euros.Bitcoin is traded through blockchain technology, which publicly records transaction details including the unique alphanumeric strings that identify buyers and sellers -- technology which is gaining increasing currency among banks and companies.Taihuttu and his family have already invested tens of thousands of euros and the money from the sale of their house will be added to it.Should things go wrong however, he and his family will just go back to square one.But if he wins his bet, Taihuttu wants to show the world to (his) daughters and help people poorer than us with the earned money.

Umar Khalid Khorasani killed in US drone strike, confirms JuA

Posted:

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - The chief of an offshoot of the Pakistani Taliban has been killed in a US drone strike, a spokesman for the group told AFP Thursday.Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA), a faction of the Pakistani Taliban, had claimed responsibility for many deadly attacks in the country, including a suicide bombing in a park in Lahore on Easter Sunday last year that killed 75 people including many children.Chief of our Jamaat-ul-Ahrar Umar Khalid Khorasani, who sustained serious injuries in a recent US drone strike in Afghanistans Paktia province, succumbed to his injuries Wednesday evening, JuA spokesman Asad Mansoor told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location. At least nine close associates of Khorasani were also killed in the strike, he added. Two US drone strikes on Monday along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan killed at least 26 people including fighters from the Haqqani network which is allied to the Afghan Taliban. The US has increased pressure on Pakistan in recent months to crack down on the Haqqanis, who are one of the strongest factions in the Afghan Taliban insurgency and have earned a fearsome reputation for their attacks on NATO troops and Afghan installations over the years. The use of US drones has dwindled dramatically in recent years in Pakistan, where the strikes have proven extremely controversial with the public and rights groups.Mondays strikes came days after Canadian hostage Joshua Boyle and his American wife and three children were freed in Pakistan after five years of captivity at the hands of the Haqqani network.Mansoor, the spokesman, said a high-level meeting of JuAs consultative council will be convened soon to appoint the outfits new chief. However, an important Taliban commander said on condition of anonymity that one of JuAs senior commanders, Asad Afridi, has already been appointed new JuA chief.JuA pledged allegiance to IS in 2014, but a year later said it had rejoined the Pakistani Taliban -- which in turn is allied to Al-Qaeda, a foe of IS.However since 2016 JuA and IS have both laid claim to several attacks, notably a suicide bombing at a hospital in the southwestern city of Quetta last year that killed 73 people.Pakistans deadliest ever attack occurred in Peshawar in December 2014, when Taliban militants stormed a school killing more than 150 people, mostly children. The joint claims raised the possibility the outfits were colluding -- or that JuA, which has foot soldiers on the ground, was allowing IS also to take credit to achieve propaganda goals.Analysts said Khorasanis death suggested resumption of intelligence sharing and coordination between Pakistan and the US.The resumption of drone strikes on anti-Pakistan elements following hard stance on Trumps Afghan policy signals moderation of positions by Islamabad and Washington, leading Pakistan security analyst Imtiaz Gul told AFP.He said it shows Americas willingness to redress Pakistans complaints about presence of militant safe havens on Afghan soil. Both countries now seem to be back to their business.

Lyft ready to challenge Uber with new investment

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - US ridesharing giant Lyft announced Thursday it has received a $1 billion investment led by the venture arm of Google parent Alphabet, to help ramp up its challenge to market leader Uber.Lyft said the new funding gives it a valuation of $11 billion as it steps up competition against Uber, reeling from a series of missteps and scandals which have forced out its founder and chief executive.A Lyft blog post said the new funding round was led by CapitalG, formerly known as Google Capital, which invests in emerging tech firms.Lyft has been expanding in the US market as Ubers image has taken a hit in recent months. It has also been expanding its partnerships including with General Motors and the former Google Car unit now called Waymo.2017 has been an important year for the Lyft community. Earlier this month, we completed our 500 millionth ride and our service is now available to 95 percent of the US population -- up from 54 percent at the beginning of the year, the statement said. While weve made progress towards our vision, were most excited about what lies ahead. The fact remains that less than 0.5 percent of miles traveled in the US happen on rideshare networks. This creates a huge opportunity to best serve our cities economic, environmental, and social futures. The new investment creates a potential conflict for Alphabet, which was one of the early investors in Uber.Uber, which has a valuation of nearly $70 billion, is widely expected to seal a deal for a major investment from Japans Softbank, which could allow some stakeholders to cash out.Uber board member Ariana Huffington said this week she expects a Softbank announcement soon.

US drone strike in Afghanistan kills six, three wounded

Posted:

KABUL (Dunya News/AFP) - The United States (US) carried out another drone attack in Afghanistan tribal areas near Paktia where six persons were killed and three wounded. The drone strike is fourth consecutive in last three days and occured near Paktia. Sources confirmed that the explosions of drone attacks occured near Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Two commanders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) were killed in the attack. Both commanders were identified as Zandani and Abdur Rehman Gatozai.According to AFP,Militants launched two separate attacks on Afghan security installations killing dozens of soldiers Thursday, the latest in a series of devastating assaults this week that have left more than 120 people dead and underscored spiralling insecurity. At least 43 Afghan soldiers were killed and nine wounded in a Taliban-claimed assault on a military base in southern Afghanistan which saw the insurgents blast their way into the compound with at least one explosives-laden Humvee -- a tactic used in three separate attacks this week -- the defence ministry said.A security source in Kandahar put the toll at 50 dead and 20 wounded. But the real figure is likely to be higher because Afghan officials habitually understate the actual number of casualties. The militants razed the base in the Chashmo area of Maiwand district in Kandahar province to the ground, according to the ministry.Unfortunately there is nothing left inside the camp. They have burned down everything they found inside, defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.Just two soldiers were known to have survived unscathed, with six unaccounted for, the ministry said, underscoring the shocking casualties that Afghan security forces have faced in their struggle to beat back the insurgents. More than 10 militants were killed, it added.US aircraft carried out an airstrike during a counter-terror operation in Maiwand on Thursday, a spokesman for US Forces in Kabul said, though he did not specify whether the target was insurgents at the base.Provincial officials said two Humvees were used in the attack which was condemned by President Ashraf Ghani. They said the assault may have been carried out with the help of insiders. The Taliban claimed the ambush in a message to journalists that said all 60 security personnel on the base were killed.Separately Thursday, militants besieged a police headquarters in the southeastern province of Ghazni, attacking it for the second time this week.Airstrikes were called in to support embattled police in the ongoing assault, which has killed two security forces so far, Ghazni provincial police chief Mohammad Zaman told AFP. The strikes were not immediately confirmed by US Forces.Officials said the earlier assault on the headquarters, which took place on Tuesday, left 20 people dead and 46 wounded.Thursdays attacks take the number of major assaults on security installations this week to four, with the total death toll climbing past 120, including soldiers, police and civilians. The Taliban used a Humvee as a bomb to blast their way into their targets in three out of the four assaults this week. The insurgents have been able to steal dozens of Humvees from security forces after taking over districts and raiding military bases across the country.- Security forces under siege -US President Donald Trump vowed earlier this year to stay the course in Afghanistan, Americas longest war.But the Taliban said the recent assaults were a clear message to the Americans and the Kabul government, that they cannot scare us with their new so-called strategy. We are fighting back and winning on every front, Inshallah (God willing), spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi told AFP.Beleaguered Afghan security forces have faced soaring casualties in their attempts to hold back the insurgents since NATO combat forces pulled out of the country at the end of 2014.Casualties leapt by 35 percent in 2016, with 6,800 soldiers and police killed, according to US watchdog SIGAR.The insurgents have carried out more complex attacks against security forces in 2017, with SIGAR describing troop casualties in the early part of the year as shockingly high. The attacks included assaults on a military hospital in Kabul in March which may have killed up to 100 people, and on a base in Mazar-i-Sharif in April which left 144 people dead.- Eroded morale -The assaults, along with high rates of desertion and corruption, have eroded morale. This weeks attacks come near the end of the summer fighting season, when militants traditionally intensify their offensives across the country. They began hours after US drone strikes in the tribal region along the border with Pakistan killed more than two dozen militants, according to sources and local officials.Tuesdays attacks alone killed 80 people in total and wounded nearly 300 in the bloodiest day in the war-torn country in almost five months. The deadliest of Tuesdays assaults was on a police compound in the city of Gardez in Paktia province where Taliban militants disguised as police detonated three explosive-packed vehicles -- including a truck and a Humvee -- that cleared the way for 11 gunmen to enter. At least 60 people were killed in the blasts and ensuing battle that lasted around five hours, health officials said, with more than 230 wounded.Afghan forces now control 59.7 percent of the country, up from 57.2 percent the previous quarter, according to SIGARs assessment earlier this year. But the Taliban and other insurgent groups have also seen their areas of control or influence increase slightly from about 10 percent to 11.1 percent.
