Vaughan calls for culture change after Stokes incident

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for a change in the culture of the national team after Ben Stokes arrest on a night out.Stokes was arrested in Bristol on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after getting into a fight in the early hours of last Monday.Video footage allegedly shows the England all-rounder throwing punches and knocking a man to the floor.Stokes, who has not been charged, and other England team-mates were out celebrating a one-day international win over West Indies less than 72 hours before their next game.Vaughan believes that was a poor decision and says Englands management need to address how their players behave.Yes, hes 26 years of age, he should be more mature, he has made a massive mistake and I have no sympathy for Ben Stokes whatsoever, Vaughan told the BBC on Tuesday. But the management of the England team have to look at themselves in the mirror and say, Hang on a minute, could we have done a bit more, could we have been a bit stricter?.I am not saying I want a headmaster and have a curfew and say, You have got to be in your room by 11:00 pm and you can never drink, but there is a time and a place and I just think now, with what has gone on this week, the culture of cricket has to change quickly.Stokes has been involved in drink-related stories before, having been sent home from a 2013 Lions tour, while it has been reported he was out partying during a Test match at Old Trafford this summer.A story came out this week that Ben Stokes was out until 3:00 am during a Test match in Manchester, Vaughan added. If I knew it and the media knew it, how come anything wasnt done to Ben Stokes in the England team. When we go on tour, we go to Australia, to India, to Bangladesh, there is a huge amount of security, there is no way in a million years an England player is allowed out, theyre allowed to go and party, but there is no way they are allowed out on their own at that time of night.

Imran Khan answered every question unlike Nawaz Sharif who couldnt provide money trail, he told.Today, a tax defaulter has been elected as party president. He will remain ineligible for premiership even if he backs hundreds of amendments.PTI leaders opined that the amendment has only been approved to stop Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif from gaining power. Afridi, Morgan spearhead T10 revolution

DUBAI: (AFP) - The United Arab Emirates will introduce a new cricket format when big hitters Shahid Afridi of Pakistan, Indias Virender Singh, Sri Lankas Kumar Sangakkar and Englands Eoin Morgan feature in a T-10 league in December. The ten-over-a-side matches will spread over 90 minutes (45 minute each side) in Sharjah, the details of which were announced here on Tuesday.Twenty20 cricket was introduced in England in 2003 while the first international Twenty20 match was held between Australia and New Zealand at Auckland in February 2005.Since then the shortest format -- the other two are five-day Tests and 50-over internationals -- has become the most popular amongst the fans around the world. The leagues president Salman Iqbal hoped the idea will kick off.Everyone has played T-10 cricket on the streets and this will give more fire to cricket and will be a big step forward and people will definitely enjoy it, said Iqbal. The tournament will be as swift as the format, lasting just four days from 21-24 December with former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Bangladeshs Shakib Al Hasan also featuring.Afridi, who retired from international cricket last year said he was thrilled at the idea. When I was told of the idea I was thrilled and requested that I want to play, said Afridi, famous as Boom Boom for his big hitting.Englands current one-day and Twenty20 captain Morgan was confident that T-10 cricket will have an impact. The whole concept is exciting, said Morgan. We all remember when the first time Twenty20 cricket was played and since then it (twenty20) has impacted the other formats. If this new idea takes off then I am sure it will also impact the other forms of the game. The four teams will be selected through a draft later this month.Misbah said the new formats will be easy for ageing players as well. Its an exciting idea and a good thing for players like me, said 43-year-old Misbah who retired in May this year. It will need just ten overs of batting and then fielding and at this age I can afford that.

FIFA punish Africans for World Cup offences

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG: (AFP) - FIFA have punished numerous African nations for offences during 2018 World Cup qualifiers last month, the world football body said Tuesday.Gabon forfeited by a mandatory 3-0 scoreline a match against Ivory Coast in Libreville for fielding suspended midfielder Merlin Tandjigora. However, the Gabonese lost the match 3-0 so the punishment effectively amounted to a $6,200 (5,300 euros) fine.Fielding ineligible players was a major problem in Africa during 2014 World Cup qualifying, but Portugal-based Tandjigora is the first culprit since.Nigeria were fined $30,000 after spectators invaded the pitch in Uyo during a 4-0 triumph over Cameroon. The Democratic Republic of Congo must pay FIFA $20,000 after the crowd hurled bottles and let off incendiary devices during a 2-2 draw with Tunisia in Kinshasa.Mali were fined $15,000 because fans flung bottles and chairs on the pitch in a 0-0 stalemate with Morocco in Bamako. The earlier qualifier between the same countries in Rabat led to a $3,000 fine for Morocco over whistling while the Malian national anthem was being played.Zambia received a $7,000 fine after the crowd hurled various unspecified objects on the pitch during a 3-1 victory over Algeria in Lusaka.Senegal and Burkina Faso were warned for late kick-offs in the qualifiers between them in Dakar and Ouagadougou. The fines are a serious blow as most African national football associations struggle financially with many relying on government bailouts for survival.

Central Indian floods have tripled: study

Posted:

PARIS: (AFP) - Violent floods in central India have tripled since 1950, according to researchers who warned Tuesday of worse to come while offering hope for predicting them better in future. The region of about half-a-billion people is regularly stricken by flash floods, landslides and torrential rains that kill thousands and displace millions of people, as well as drowning crops and livestock.Floods cost India about $3 billion (2.6 billion euros) in losses every year -- about 10 percent of the world total, according to the study in the journal Nature Communications. We find that there is a threefold increase in widespread extreme precipitation events over central India during 1950-2015, the authors wrote. The team also succeeded in tracking down the main culprit: moisture from the Arabian Sea in the north of the Indian Ocean. As climate change continues to warm the ocean, the frequency and severity of killer storms in India are likely to increase, the team said. But the ocean is also where the hope lies, in the form of a natural early-warning system. The fact that the extremes are linked to the warm ocean temperatures means that they are more predictable, Roxy Koll of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, a co-author of the study, told AFP.The warmest ocean temperatures appear two to three weeks before the extreme events, he said in an email. Also, these ocean temperatures stay for a week or more, giving a good opportunity for prediction.Further research must be done and forecasting methods refined, the team said. But once accurate predictions are possible, schools and offices can be given holidays for those days when a red alert is given, and people living in low-lying areas can be moved to high-rise areas, Koll said.Warnings can be given for driving on those roads which are susceptible to flooding, he added.According to the study, there were 268 floods in India between 1950 and 2015, killing almost 70,000 people and leaving about 17 million homeless.Central India was one of the hardest-hit areas, even as it also struggles with dwindling regular rainfall, also blamed in part on the warming Indian Ocean.
