English champions Leicester break transfer record

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Premier League champions Leicester paid a reported club record fee of 29.7 million ($38 million, 34 million euros) to sign Algeria striker Islam Slimani from Sporting Portugal on Wednesday.Slimani agreed a five-year contract with Claudio Ranieris side after scoring 27 times in 33 league games for the Lisbon side last season. The 28-year-olds arrival shatters Leicesters previous transfer record of 16 million, which they paid for Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow in July.To join a team like Leicester City is a huge honour and I cant wait to get started, Slimani told Leicesters website.Ive always wanted to play my football in the Premier League and to get the opportunity to do that with the reigning champions was something I simply could not turn down.I saw the amazing success of last season and the passion of the clubs supporters. Thats something that Im so excited to be a part of.Sporting said Leicester would pay an initial 25.5 million, with the fee potentially rising by another 4.2 million.Slimani will team up with fellow Algerian Riyad Mahrez at the King Power Stadium.Mahrez was voted Player of the Year after playing a key role in Leicesters fairytale title triumph last season and he convinced Slimani he would benefit from joining Ranieris squad. My friend Riyad Mahrez spoke to me about the club and about the atmosphere the Leicester fans create at King Power Stadium, Slimani said.I will give absolutely everything I have on the pitch for them and for my team-mates and I hope that together we can achieve something special.Slimani has represented Algeria at both the 2013 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as well as in the 2014 World Cup.With the help of Mahrez and Slimani, Algeria qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Qatar prepares for 2018 and 2022 World Cups

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Qatar football officials are concerned right now with qualification for the 2018 World Cup finals, but preparations continue apace for the Gulf states controversial hosting of the 2022 tournament.Despite continued human rights and trade unions concerns over labour, a Swiss corruption investigation into the awarding of the tournament to the tiny Gulf emirate, switching the tournament from its traditional June and July to November and December because of the desert countrys fierce summer, and a drop in oil prices hitting the countrys energy-reliant economy, Qatar remains on schedule to host footballs biggest tournament. This week, a senior official from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the group overseeing the organisation of the tournament, told Arabic language daily Al Watan that all projects for 2022 will be delivered on time.Work on the Qatar 2022 projects is going full swing, said executive director, Ali Ghanim al-Kuwari.All the projects are in an advanced stage of design and implementation.FIFA is set to make a final decision on the number of stadiums to be used in 2022 by the end of this year, but it is widely expected to be eight.Earlier this summer, Jurgen Muller, FIFAs head of planning and infrastructure, told a Doha conference that Qatars infrastructure and stadium projects were well on track.Of the eight stadiums, all but one -- Al Bayt -- are located in the capital Doha or its suburbs.Building work has begun on six of the stadiums and the first stadium, Khalifa International, should be completed by the beginning of 2017, said al-Kuwari.Khalifa will also host the World Athletics Championships in 2019.And it is the stadium where earlier this year Amnesty International alleged workers suffered abuses, in some cases forced labour.Building work on all stadiums to be used in the World Cup should finish by 2020, organisers have previously stated. In May this year, Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee said the cost for the stadiums was around $10 billion (9bn euros).Spending on direct World Cup projects, such as stadiums, appears to be unaffected so far as Qatar adjusts it expenditure to cope with the global slump in oil prices. But there are potential bumps in the road as spending on other projects face cuts.Qatar is forecast to run a budget deficit in 2016, its first in 15 years.Unless there is a major shift in the oil price, that will be repeated in 2017 and 2018.Qatar is spending more than $200 billion on major infrastructure projects, such as a subway system that will transport fans to games in 2022, major roadworks and a new city, Lusail, where the 2022 World Cup final will be played. But it has already cut back on spending in some areas -- hundreds of jobs have been shed at broadcaster Al Jazeera and the state-funded Qatar Museums, while spending on healthcare facilities dropped. To emphasise the problems, this week Dohas Hamad International Airport introduced an airport tax on passengers as the country seeks fresh revenue streams. In mid-December, it is expected that Qatar will announce the end of its much-criticised kafala labour system, the source of much criticism from international human rights groups.Kafala, which places restrictions on workers ability to change jobs and travel, is to be replaced by a contract system. However, it is unlikely to placate critics and further damning reports of labour practice in Qatar are expected to be launched this autumn.

Konta goes through in US Open despite heat illness

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Johanna Konta collapsed with apparent heat illness but shook off the scare to beat Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets Wednesday to reach the third round of the US Open. The 13th seeded Briton said she was a little embarrassed by all the drama, but expected to be ready to go against Switzerlands Belinda Bencic in the third round on Friday.Im doing everything that I can to recover well and try to get myself into a state to be ready to compete again, said Konta, who said shed gone through a similar scare on court before.Basically my heart rate spiked and I couldnt really control my breathing, she said.I started hyperventilating. I started shaking. Thats why I went down on the ground, because I was quite violently shaking.Konta was serving to try to force a second-set tiebreaker when she was stricken, slumping to her knees at the baseline. She sat on the court with bags of ice on her body until medical personnel arrived and took her blood pressure.I feel like my whole body is in shock, she told the doctor. My heart rate went up. My vision became blurred. When play resumed after a medical timeout, Konta surrendered her serve and the set. She then departed for a lengthy toilet break that included a long walk from court 13 to the nearest convenience. She returned somewhat refreshed, promptly broke Pironkova and closed out a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory. After some time sitting courtside Konta apologized to fans for not signing autographs and departed.Pironkova, while crediting Konta with the better performance on the day, said she was frustrated by the lengthy comfort break, during which Konta had to be shepherded through the crowds away from the court. With that toilet break I think the match was stopped for just too long, she said. It was an unfortunate time. I had my momentum going, I was getting back in the match.Probably that break somehow maybe stopped that momentum, but then again, I dont want to make excuses for myself.- Scary moment -================Pironkova was also careful to say that Konta, the 13th seed who claimed her maiden WTA title in Stanford this year, acted within the rules.Today Im not very happy about these rules, to be able to go and change your clothes after every set, it didnt work out good for me today. But these are the rules, she said. When Konta collapsed, apparently suffering in the steamy 31-degree heat, Pironkova felt only concern. When you see the player that youre playing against look like this, that she couldnt stand, its scary, she said. And she was relieved shed never gone through anything like it herself.Oh, thank god no, she said. I havent and Im really grateful for that. Its probably horrible.Konta, however, was matter-of-fact.Im definitely not the first person to have these sort of struggles on court, she said.Im definitely not going to be the last. Its part of our sport. Its part of the conditions that we play in. All any of us can do is just deal with it the best that we can.

Turkish interior minister resigns in surprise move

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala, a loyalist of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday resigned in a surprise move, the prime minister announced. After a hastily-convened meeting with Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Ala had stepped down and would be replaced by Suleyman Soylu, the current labour and social security minister. There was no official explanation for why Ala had quit and Turkish media said it was unexpected.Yildirim thanked Ala for his services. The ministerial change follows a failed July 15 coup, which was blamed on supporters of US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, an arch enemy of Erdogan. The abortive putsch raised questions about intelligence failings which government officials have acknowledged.Ala had served as interior minister for nearly three years. He also previously acted as undersecretary to Erdogan, when the president was prime minister.Ala leaves the post as the insurgency between Turkish security forces and militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rages following the collapse of a two-year truce last summer.

Brazil's Rousseff stripped of presidency, Temer sworn in

Posted:

BRASILIA (AFP) - Brazils Dilma Rousseff was stripped of the countrys presidency in an impeachment vote Wednesday and replaced by her bitter rival Michel Temer, shifting Latin Americas biggest economy sharply to the right.Rousseff, 68, was convicted by 61 of the 81 senators of illegally manipulating the national budget. The vote, which exceeded the needed two-thirds majority, meant the veteran leftist leader was immediately removed from office.Three hours later, Temer -- her center-right former vice president and one time crucial coalition partner whom she now accuses of orchestrating a coup against her -- was sworn in.Cheers -- and cries of disappointment -- erupted in the blue-carpeted, circular Senate chamber as the impeachment verdict flashed up on the electronic voting screen.Pro-impeachment senators sang the national anthem, some waving Brazilian flags, while leftist allies of Rousseff stood stony faced. I will not associate my name with this infamy, read a sign held up by one senator.Coup plotters others chanted. In a surprise twist, a separate vote to bar Rousseff from holding any public office for eight years failed to pass, meaning she could in theory re-enter political life.Speaking at the Alvorada presidential palace on the outskirts of the capital Brasilia, Rousseff, from the leftist Workers Party, condemned her forced exit. They decided to interrupt the mandate of a president who had committed no crime. They have convicted an innocent person and carried out a parliamentary coup, she said, defiantly vowing that shed be back.Temer, 75, was to mark his first day as president by flying late Wednesday to China for a G20 summit. A recorded address to the nation was expected to be released later.A stalwart of the center-right PMDB party, Temer has vowed to steer Brazil away from 13 years of Workers Party rule in hopes that a more market-friendly track will resolve the countrys worst recession in decades.Rousseff is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the countrys problems as it slid into todays economic disarray. She told the Senate during a marathon 14-hour session on Monday that she is innocent and that abuse of the impeachment process put Brazils democracy, restored in 1985 after a two-decades-long military dictatorship, at risk.Recalling how she was tortured and imprisoned in the 1970s for belonging to a leftist guerrilla group, Rousseff urged senators to vote against impeachment, vote for democracy. However, huge anti-Rousseff street demonstrations over the last year have reflected nationwide anger at her management of a country suffering double-digit unemployment and inflation. The once mighty Workers Party, meanwhile, has struggled to stage more than small rallies.Temer, who was in an uncomfortable partnership with Rousseff before finally splitting from her, will be president until the next scheduled elections in late 2018.Better known as a backroom wheeler-dealer than street politician, Temer took over in an interim role after Rousseffs initial suspension in May.He immediately named a new government that turned its back on more than a decade of leftist rule in which Brazil saw 29 million people lifted from poverty, but became bogged down in corruption and the ongoing economic slump.Temer has earned plaudits from investors. It remains uncertain whether he will have voters support to push through the painful austerity reforms he promises.About 50 leftist demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace to show their support for Rousseff. We are protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy, said 61-year-old farmer Orlando Ribeiro. In the center of the capital, extra security and the closing of avenues near the Senate caused massive traffic jams. Police said they were preparing for large protests later in the day.Venezuela and Ecuador both pulled their ambassadors from Brazil in protest at Rousseffs removal. On the Senate floor, emotions crackled in the run-up to the vote, then overflowed as senators made final speeches on what both sides of the debate agreed was history in the making.Renan Calheiros, the Senate president, rejected Rousseffs claim of a coup, saying her impeachment might not have been perfect, but had the DNA of democracy, the DNA of the constitution.Senator Aecio Neves, Rousseffs narrowly defeated center-right opponent in her 2014 reelection, pronounced triumphantly: The constitution won. Brazil wonBut Senator Vanessa Grazziotin was scathing in her summing up of an illegal process that is called impeachment but is a coup.Temer does not have legitimacy to govern this country, she warned. This is a farce, a farce, a farce, shouted Another pro-Rousseff senator, Lindberg Farias.Shaking his fists at the majority backing impeachment, he cried: Theyre going in the garbage can of history.

Turkey denies truce with Syrian Kurdish militia

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkey said Wednesday a truce with Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria was out of the question, denying a US claim the two sides had agreed to hold fire a week into Turkeys cross-border offensive. In an unprecedented operation, Turkey has been deploying tanks and troops in Syria to clear the border area of Islamic State (IS) jihadists and halt the westward advance of a US-backed Kurdish militia, which Ankara sees as a terrorist group. The assault on the Kurdish-led forces has sparked international concern and Washington had said on Tuesday that the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire. But Ankara dismissed this claim.Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said a truce was out of the question. They will remain our target unless they retreat east of the Euphrates, he said, repeating Turkeys demand that the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) retreat to the northeast.Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Wednesday the operation would continue until terror elements are completely neutralised and threats to our border, soil and citizens are over. For their part, the Kurdish-backed militias said they had agreed to what US Central Command spokesman Colonel John Thomas called a loose agreement to stop fighting.Ankaras bombardments of their positions appeared to have eased, with no reports of any such strikes since Monday.Turkish forces and their Syrian rebel allies have kept up their fight against IS, whose strategist Abu Mohamed al-Adnani was killed in an air strike Tuesday claimed both by the US-led anti-IS coalition and Russia. After driving Kurdish-backed fighters south away from the border town of Jarabulus wrested from IS last week, the Turkish forces and their Syrian rebel allies on Tuesday engaged IS fighters west of the town, Turkish media said.Turkish warplanes later conducted air strikes against terrorist targets nearby, the state-run Anadolu agency said, referring to IS.Meanwhile, with IS apparently on the back foot, Russias military said Wednesday one of its air strikes had killed propaganda chief Adnani.A day earlier, the Pentagon said he was targeted by US-led coalition forces.Turkey sees the YPG as an offshoot of the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is waging a bloody insurgency against security forces in Turkeys southeast. In the past few months, Turkey has watched in alarm as the PKKs Syrian Kurdish allies advance on the other side of the border, fearing their territorial expansion will strengthen the PKK.However, the US-led anti-IS coalition has been backing the YPG with training and equipment.Washington described weekend clashes between Turkey and the Kurdish-led forces as unacceptable and urged the warring parties to stop fighting each other and concentrate on combatting IS. Turkish media reported that Ankara summoned the US ambassador to protest the US criticism.A spokesman for the Turkish foreign ministry, however, told AFP that there was only a phone call to the ambassador, John Bass.Turkeys offensive has also raised concerns that Ankara could be drawn even deeper into the Syrian conflict.Iran, a key backer of President Bashar al-Assads regime, urged Turkey to quickly wrap up its campaign, calling it a violation of Syrian sovereignty.Turkey has said Syria was informed in advance of the operation by Russia.Meanwhile, the Turkish army, which lost a soldier last week to anti-tank fire, suffered further casualties.Three Turkish soldiers were injured in a rocket attack on a tank near Jarabulus, according to Turkish television. On Tuesday, Turkish troops and their rebel allies came under attack in IS-held territory to the west of Jarabulus, with the jihadists claiming to have destroyed two Turkish tanks in a missile attack. The group also claimed to have carried out a suicide car bombing against Turkish-backed rebels in the same area and said it had killed dozens of Turkish soldiers and Turkish-backed rebels.Kalin said the Jarabulus operation had killed a myth that the Kurdish militia was the only effective force on the ground in the fight against IS, adding: The moderate Syrian opposition, if supported, could put up an effective fight.

US 'deeply concerned' by Israeli settlement decision

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States rebuked Israel on Wednesday over what it said was its accelerated building of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank in the face of mounting international concern. This significant expansion of the settlement activity poses a serious and growing threat to the viability of a two state solution, President Barack Obamas spokesman Josh Earnest said.We are particularly troubled by the policy of retroactively approving illegal outposts and unauthorized settlements, he added, briefing reporters aboard Air Force One en route for China.Washington has long been concerned that Israels building on occupied Palestinian land is undermining hopes for a Middle East peace deal, but Wednesdays warning was unusually strongly worded. An official said Israels actions ran counter to the advice laid out by the Middle East Quartet, a contact group comprising the United Nations, European Union, Russia and the United States. We are deeply concerned by the government of Israels announcement today to advance plans for over 500 new settlement units in the West Bank, a senior official told AFP on condition of anonymity. This significant expansion of the settlement enterprise poses a very serious and growing threat to the viability of the two-state solution, he added, warning Israel could torpedo peace hopes. The United States has urged Israel and the Palestinians to take meaningful steps to build trust, but Israel has instead promoted the building of thousands of new settlement homes. These policies have effectively given the governments green light for the pervasive advancement of settlement activity in a new and potentially unlimited way, the senior official warned. As the Quartet report highlights, we are concerned about a systematic process of land seizures, settlement expansions and legalizations, he said. This, the official warned, fundamentally undermines the prospects for a two-state solution and risks entrenching a one-state reality of perpetual occupation and conflict.Israel has defended its settlement building, arguing that Jews have lived in the West Bank and Jerusalem -- the divided city claimed by both Israel and Palestinians as a capital -- for thousands of years. But the US official warned the Israeli government risks undermining its own case with its aggressive settlement program and a dramatic acceleration in the demolition of Palestinian buildings.

Trump in Mexico: US has right to build border wall

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump on Wednesday stood alongside Mexicos President Enrique Pena Nieto and declared that the United States has the right to erect a border wall to stem illegal immigration. We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders, Trump said at the presidential residence in Mexico City after the two men held closed-door talks. He acknowledged, however, that they did not discuss who will pay for the wall, despite Trump persistently stating throughout his campaign that Mexico will foot the bill for the highly controversial project. We didnt discuss that. We didnt discuss who pays for the wall, Trump said. After a year of lobbing insults at Mexico, the provocative billionaire candidate was making a surprise visit to the neighboring country in the heat of the US presidential campaign, seeking to seize control of the narrative and portray himself as a capable statesman on the international stage. It was a day of high drama for both men, who found themselves face to face after having exchanged criticisms from afar over the past year. After Trump launched his presidential campaign last year by declaring that Mexico was sending rapists and other criminals across the border, Pena Nieto likened the New York businessmans isolationist positions to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and fascist Benito Mussolini. On Wednesday Pena Nieto was far more diplomatic, saying it was crucial to transform the countries shared border from a controversy into an asset for our region. But he did not hide the fact that many in his country have felt the sting of Trumps harsh rhetoric.Mexican people felt hurt by the comments made, Pena Nieto said, with Trump at his side. But Im sure that the genuine interest is to build a relationship that will give both of our societies better welfare.Trump said the two allied nations could improve ties by addressing five points: ending illegal immigration, securing the border, dismantling drug cartels, improving NAFTA -- the 22-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement that Trump argues has been a disaster for the United States -- and maintaining manufacturing wealth in the region.Trump was to immediately fly to Phoenix, Arizona where he will give a highly anticipated speech on his immigration policies.

MOGADISHU (Agencies) - A suicide bomber has detonated an explosives-laden truck near the gate of Somalias presidential palace in the capital on Tuesday, killing at least 22 people, police say.The bomb exploded during a morning traffic jam, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein, a senior police officer. Some Cabinet ministers at the SYL hotel were among the 31 injured, said Hussein. The blast damaged nearby hotels often frequented by government officials and business executives, he said. The explosion was heard across Mogadishu, and smoke was seen billowing over the area of the presidential compound.Somalias Islamic extremist group al-Shabab has claimed the responsibility for the blast, according to the rebels Andalus radio station. The injured were taken to Mogadishus Madina Hospital, said Dr. Mohamed Yusuf, the hospitals director. The massive blast left a trail of destruction across the hilltop presidential complex and to nearby hotels. The bombing tore into blast walls protecting hotels and blew off the roofs of nearby houses.Security forces tried to stop the bomber who used back roads before he sped through checkpoints near the presidential palace and detonated the bomb, said Col. Ali Nur, a police officer. He reached near the gate of the state house with flat tires. While al-Shabab has been ousted from most of Somalias cities, it continues to carry out bombings and suicide attacks, notably in the capital. In late July, two al-Shabab suicide bombers detonated explosives-laden cars outside the office of the U.N.s mine-clearing agency and an army checkpoint near the African Unions main base in Mogadishu, killing 13.Other attacks have targeted hotels. North American couple appears in new Taliban hostage video

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - An American-Canadian couple held hostage by the Taliban for four years have urged their governments to pressure Kabul to change its policy on executions of captured insurgents, according to a new video which surfaced Tuesday.Canadian Joshua Boyle and his American wife Caitlan Coleman, who has given birth to two sons while in captivity, were kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2012 during a backpacking trip.In the two minute, 31 second video, shared by SITE Intelligence group, the couple were shown saying their captors were terrified and frightened of the Afghan government executing their fellow fighters. In early May, Kabul hanged six Taliban-linked inmates, in the first set of executions carried out as part of President Ashraf Ghanis new hardline policy against the insurgents who are stepping up their nationwide offensive. It was not clear when the video was shot, but it comes amid swirling rumours in Kabul that the government plans to execute Anas Haqqani, son of the Taliban-allied Haqqani networks founder, who has been held since 2014.The government has declined to comment on those rumours. In Washington, State Department spokesman John Kirby said US officials were aware of the video and were examining it for its validity. We remain concerned obviously about the welfare of Caitlan and her family and we continue to urge... their immediate release on humanitarian grounds, Kirby told reporters. He added that Washington had spoken to the governments of both Afghanistan and Pakistan to insist on the need to ensure that captured US citizens are returned home safely.Earlier this year, Caitlans parents James and Lyn Coleman, who live in Pennsylvania, appealed to the Taliban to release the couple and their two young children. The Colemans last saw their daughter in July 2012, when she set off for Russia on a hiking trip with Boyle that took them through Central Asia and ultimately into war-torn Afghanistan. The couple told Circa News that they got a letter from Caitlan last November proving that she and Boyle were still alive, and announcing that she had given birth to a second son.The couple were last seen in a video emailed to her parents in 2013 in which they asked the US government and their families to secure their release. The Colemans made the video public after Bowe Bergdahl, a US Army sergeant held captive for five years in Afghanistan, was freed in a prisoner swap.

Brazil senators inch toward Rousseff impeachment vote

BRASILIA (AFP) - Brazilian senators engaged in marathon debate Tuesday on the eve of voting on whether to strip Dilma Rousseff of the presidency and end 13 years of leftist rule in Latin Americas biggest country.Lawyers on both sides of the impeachment trial dividing Brazil made impassioned closing arguments, followed by final speeches from senators. The vote on Rousseffs fate, originally set for Tuesday, was put off to Wednesday.Brazils first woman president, 68, is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the countrys problems as it slid into its deepest recession in decades.Latest estimates from independent analysts and pro-impeachment senators are that the upper chamber will easily reach the two-thirds majority -- 54 out of 81 senators -- to convict Rousseff. Loyalists say they havent yet lost hope of saving the Workers Party president. The chances of impeachment not passing and the president being made to step down are virtually nill, said political analyst Adriano Codato at Parana University. If Rousseff is forced from office, her former vice president turned bitter foe Michel Temer will be immediately sworn in as president until the next scheduled elections in late 2018.Temer, 75, took over in an interim role after Rousseffs initial suspension in May and at once named a new government with an agenda shifting Brazil to the right.Rousseff, in a 14-hour appearance Monday, defiantly challenged senators to acquit her, branding impeachment as a coup.Lawyers presenting closing arguments on Tuesday could not hold back their emotions as the clock wound down on a crisis that has paralyzed Brazilian politics for months and helped deepen national gloom over recession and runaway corruption.A lead lawyer for the case against Rousseff, Janaina Paschoal, wept as she asked forgiveness for causing the president suffering, but insisted it was the right thing to do.Impeachment is a constitutional remedy that we need to resort to when the situation gets particularly serious, and that is what has happened, Paschoal said, rejecting Rousseffs coup claim. The Brazilian people must be aware that nothing illegal and illegitimate is being done here.Rousseffs veteran lawyer Jose Eduardo Cardozo retorted that Rousseff was innocent and was being made to pay for her support of a huge corruption investigation that has snared many of Brazils elite. This is a farce, he said in an impassioned speech during which his voice alternated from shouts to near whispers. We should ask her forgiveness if she is convicted. History will treat her fairly. History will absolve Dilma Rousseff if you convict her, he said.Recalling how she was tortured under Brazils military dictatorship in the 1970s, Rousseff on Monday had urged senators during her testimony to vote against impeachment, vote for democracy... Do not accept a coup. However, momentum to push her out of office appears unstoppable, fueled by deep anger over Brazils devastating recession, dysfunctional politics and the vast corruption probe centered on state oil giant Petrobras.Public reaction to Rousseffs impeachment trial has been characterized by widespread indifference, as Brazilians struggle with rising inflation and unemployment. The Workers Party under Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is credited with raising around 29 million Brazilians out of poverty. But many now blame the party for the countrys multiple ills, accusing Rousseff of mismanagement in particular.Temer, of the center-right PMDB party, has earned plaudits from investors since taking the interim post. However, it remains uncertain whether he will have voters support to push through the painful austerity reforms he promises.Rousseff has barely double digit approval ratings. But Temer is hardly more popular, according to opinion polls.

Tennis: Serena sails into US Open second round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Serena Williams started strong in her latest bid to rewrite the record books, storming past Ekaterina Makarova and into the second round of the US Open on Tuesday. The US world number one, slowed since her Wimbledon triumph by a right shoulder injury, needed just 63 minutes to dispatch 29th-ranked Makarova 6-3, 6-3.I got off to a fast start because I knew she was a tough opponent, said Williams, who delivered a dozen aces and 27 winners.Although she appeared untroubled by her shoulder, Williams said the proof of full fitness would come later.Im going to have to wait until tomorrow to see, she said. I wasnt able to play much since Wimbledon. Every day, Ill just see how it goes.A record seventh title on the hardcourts of Flushing Meadows, where she first triumphed in 1999, would see Williams break the Open Era record of 22 Grand Slam titles she now shares with German Steffi Graf and close in on Margaret Courts all-time mark of 24 major titles. Her victory was the first act in a blockbuster night on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where second-seeded Andy Murray opened his account against Czech Lukas Rosol.Since capturing his second Wimbledon title in July, Murray has gone on to defend his Olympic gold in Rio.He is vying to become the fourth man in the Open Era to reach all four major finals in a calendar year. Before the floodlights came up, Serenas elder sister Venus claimed a Grand Slam record of her own as her 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Ukraines Kateryna Kozlova marked her 72nd appearance in the main draw of a major. The 36-year-old Venus, enjoying a resurgence in a 2016 season that includes a WTA title in Taiwan, survived 63 unforced errors against the rising 22-year-old, although she was pleased that her aggressive approach also yielded 46 winners. The first round is hard, Venus said. I havent played a single match in, like, three weeks. Just getting out there and trying to play perfectly. The good part is Im playing the game I want to play, Im playing aggressively and moving forward. Its just about making a few less errors and its a completely different story. In other early matches, third-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka, a two-time semi-finalist, reached the second round with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-4 win over Spains Fernando Verdasco.Im really happy, Wawrinka said after evening his career record against Verdasco at three wins apiece. Fernando is a tough player to play. He can be really aggressive. He doesnt give you so much rhythm, so its not easy.Kei Nishikori, who became Asias first mens Grand Slam finalist in New York in 2014, when he fell to Marin Cilic in the final, also advanced, downing German Benjamin Becker 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.It was a great feeling of course, said Nishikori, whose breakthrough run in 2014 was followed by an abrupt first-round exit last year. Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over fellow Argentine Diego Schwartzman. The 27-year-old del Potro, almost pushed into retirement by three wrist surgeries, is back at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2013, earning a wild card invitation with a stirring run to an Olympic silver medal.Womens fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, trying to make it to the quarter-finals in New York for the first time, breezed past US qualifier Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-1.Fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep also advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.Halep admitted nerves prevented her from closing out the match on her first opportunity at 6-0, 5-0.The late wobble, in front of a crowd that included compatriot Nadia Comeneci -- the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 -- had Halep rating her own performance less than nine.

Match winner Steyn hungry for more

Posted:

CENTURION, South Africa (AFP) - Fast bowler Dale Steyn set up a series-clinching 204-run win for South Africa on the fourth day of the second and final Test against New Zealand at SuperSport Park on Tuesday, then said he was still not quite at his best after a lengthy injury lay-off.Playing in his first Test in eight months after recovering from groin and shoulder injuries, Steyn took three wickets with his first 11 balls of the innings and finished with five for 33 as New Zealand were bowled out for 195 despite a defiant innings of 76 by Henry Nicholls.Im still a long way from where I want to be, said Steyn, 33.There was a lot of assistance in this wicket and I put the ball in the right spots enough times to ask questions. But I want to get the pace up a bit more.Overs under the belt and a little more strength work and Ill eventually get there.Steyn took his total of wickets to 416 in 84 Tests, going past Pakistans Wasim Akram into 11th place on the world all-time list, only five behind ninth-placed Shaun Pollock, South Africas leading wicket-taker.But he said going past Pollock and setting records did not motivate him.It really doesnt bother me, he said. Im not going to sit on my couch when Im 70 and go, I was the leading wicket-taker.Ill remember tonight, I will remember beating Australia in Australia, I will remember winning in England and hopefully I will remember winning a World Cup. I just love this game.Stand-in captain Faf du Plessis said it had been an almost perfect Test for South Africa. If I had written a script it would have been almost like this.He said South Africas plunge from top of the Test rankings to number seven - they climbed two places after Tuesdays win - had prompted some soul searching. We had some real good discussions and the guys took it on board, he said. Weve found our passion again. It looked as though it would be easy for the hosts when Steyn and Vernon Philander ripped through New Zealands top four batsmen for seven runs inside the first four overs of the innings. But the left-handed Nicholls, playing in his sixth Test match, displayed courage and concentration in making his second Test half-century and highest score to delay South Africas celebrations. He found a similarly determined partner in BJ Watling, who made 32 in a two-hour, 68-run fifth wicket partnership, while Mitchell Santner, Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee all provided varying degrees of resistance.Nicholls was last man out for 76, scored off 140 balls with 12 fours.Williamson said that sending South Africa in after winning the toss had been based on their expectations of a well-grassed pitch. They played very well to get 450-plus but there was enough in the wicket to perhaps bowl them out for a below-par total, he said.It was a good toss to lose and unfortunately I won it. Credit does go to the way they applied themselves with the bat. Their first innings was the winning of the match.Batting on a pitch which deteriorated more quickly than expected had been difficult.Steyn and Philander are world-class bowlers. Throw Rabada into the mix, who is young and extremely talented and it makes an extremely tough challenge but one that all the batters were excited to come up against. In terms of experiences theres nothing better for you as a player to move your game forward. He singled out Nicholls. For a young cricketer starting his career to come up against an attack like that on a tough surface is a great experience to have. He showed a lot of character.

Tennis: Record-setting Venus into US Open second round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Venus Williams battled into the second round of the US Open on Tuesday, grabbing a slice of Grand Slam history along the way with her 72nd main draw appearance in a major. On the same day that younger sister Serena was due to launch her bid for a record seventh US Open title -- and a record-setting 23rd Grand Slam crown -- the elder Williams broke the Open Era mark she had shared with Amy Frazier for most Grand Slams contested. The 36-year-old Venus, enjoying something of a resurgence in a 2016 season that includes a WTA title in Taiwan, survived 63 unforced errors in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over 22-year-old Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova, who has risen more than 80 spots in the world rankings since February to her current number 93.The errors told the story today, said Williams, whose aggressive game also produced 46 winners. Im going to try to change that for the second round. The match closed out the afternoon action on the Arthur Ashe stadium court, setting the stage for a blockbuster night that included Serenas first-round clash with Russian veteran Ekaterina Makarova and second-seeded Andy Murray taking on Czech Lukas Rosol.Serenas Wimbledon triumph in July saw her equal Steffi Grafs Open Era record of 22 major titles. She has won four of five encounters with Makarova, including two US Open matches against the Russian left-hander.Murray is bidding to become the fourth man in the Open Era to reach all four major finals in a calendar year. Since capturing his second Wimbledon title Murray has gone on to defend his Olympic gold in Rio.Murray has downplayed any grudge match aspect to his clash with Rosol, who provoked an angry outburst from the Briton when they met in the quarter-finals at Munich last year.In other early matches, third-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka, a two-time semi-finalist, reached the second round with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-4 win over Spains Fernando Verdasco.Im really happy, Wawrinka said after evening his career record against Verdasco at three wins apiece. I have great memories here and I always love coming back to New York.Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over fellow Argentine Diego Schwartzman. The 27-year-old del Potro, almost pushed into retirement by three wrist surgeries, is back at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2013, earning a wild card invitation with a stirring run to an Olympic silver medal.Womens fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, trying to make it to the quarter-finals in New York for the first time, takes on American qualifier Jessica Pegula.Fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep survived late jitters to make it safely into the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.Halep needed less than an hour, but admitted she was too nervous to finish the match after failing to take advantage of her first chance to close it out when leading 6-0, 5-0.The late wobble, in front of a crowd that included compatriot Nadia Comeneci -- the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 -- had Halep rating her own performance less than nine.

Tennis: Nadal, Djokovic miss Federer at US Open

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic admitted that they miss old sparring partner Roger Federer who was forced to skip the US Open for the first time since 1999.Federer, the winner of a record 17 majors and a five-time champion in New York, shut down his season to rest a knee injury which was aggravated in a semi-final loss at Wimbledon.Roger today is having the same injury issues, so I wish him a fast recovery, Nadal said after beating Denis Istomin to make the second round.Nadal had come into the tournament under an injury cloud after a serious wrist problem had forced an early withdrawal from the French Open as well as an absence from Wimbledon. It is very tough to see the players outside of the tour. The fans miss the players, the tour needs the players, added the Spaniard.World number one Djokovic, who beat Federer to win a second US Open last year, also felt sympathy for the 35-year-old Swiss. Its not the same when you dont have Roger for the tournament, for the fans. Hes been one of the most popular players of all time, one of the most successful players of all time, said the Serb, a first round winner over Jerzy Janowicz on Monday. There is no doubt that every tournament is missing him. But on the other hand, we have got to focus on the players that we have at the moment. So I think even without him, its a very strong field. Im sure its going to be a good tournament.

NFL: NBA, NFL icons back Kaepernick over anthem furore

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and NFL legend Jim Brown sprang to the defence of Colin Kaepernick as the furore over the San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks national anthem boycott raged on Tuesday.Kaepernick ignited a firestorm of controversy over his refusal to stand up for the playing of The Star Spangled Banner before a pre-season game against Green Bay last Friday. The 49ers star said he had sat down during the anthem as a protest aimed at drawing attention to the plight of blacks in America.Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was among the latest to join in criticism of Kaepernick on Monday, describing the players protest as a terrible thing.Maybe he should find a country that works better for him, let him try, its not gonna happen, Trump said in a radio interview. But Kaepernick won support from two of the most respected elder statesmen of American sport, Abdul-Jabbar and Brown, longtime civil rights advocates.Hes doing just what Thomas Jefferson said should be done -- to speak out, Abdul-Jabbar told CNN.Maybe people dont like his style or his timing, but he is trying to call attention to issues that are important to him, and I think he has the right to do that.In a separate opinion piece in The Washington Post, Abdul-Jabbar placed Kaepernicks anthem boycott in the historical context of sporting protests dating back to Muhammad Alis refusal to fight in the Vietnam War and the clenched fist salutes of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympic Games. What should horrify Americans is not Kaepernicks choice to remain seated during the national anthem, but that nearly 50 years after Ali was banned from boxing for his stance and Tommie Smith and John Carloss raised fists caused public ostracization and numerous death threats, we still need to call attention to the same racial inequities, Abdul-Jabbar wrote.Failure to fix this problem is whats really un-American here.Meanwhile, NFL great Brown said he was with Kaepernick 100 percent.I listened to him and he makes all the sense in the world. Hes within his rights and hes telling the truth as he sees it, Brown said on the NFL Network. I am with him 100 percent. The 49ers and NFL have said that while they encourage standing for the anthem, there are no rules against it. Kaepernick is not expected to be disciplined. The 49ers quarterback on Sunday said he would continue his protest, with San Franciscos next game coming at San Diego on Thursday in a pre-season match against the Chargers.San Diego is home to a large population of US military personnel and the Chargers pre-season game will feature a Salute to the Military.Kaepernick however has said he will not be deterred from sitting out the anthem once again while insisting he retained great respect for service personnel.I have family, I have friends that have gone and fought for this country, Kaepernick told the San Francisco Chronicle. And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone. Thats not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isnt holding their end of the bargain up, as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everybody.

Pakistan to face England in third ODI today

Posted:

LONDON (Dunya News) - The third one-day international of the five-match series between Pakistan and England will be played today (Tuesday) at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The match will start at 6:00pm (PST).Following an impressive show in the recently concluded four-match Test series against England, the visitors Pakistan lag behind 0-2 in the One-Day International (ODI) series, as they get set to take on the in-form hosts in the third match of the series.Pakistan have failed to come up with the same fighting spirit in the ODIs as they did in the Tests, while England have bounced back well enough, maintaining their tough composure in the limited-overs format, as they aim to seal the series with a win on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim insists his side are determined to show their one-day international credentials after a pair of lacklustre efforts against England.Imad and his team-mates are ninth in the International Cricket Council one-day rankings after defeats in Southampton and at Lord’s left them 2-0 down with three to play against England. Nevertheless Imad says Azhar Ali’s team have it in them to battle back in the third match at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.“With the talent we’ve got, I don’t think it’s a number nine team,” he said. “We have to show that in big matches like tomorrow. I believe we can come back. We have to work hard, trust ourselves and show our skills in front of the cameras.”

Oil falls on bullish Fed talk and rising dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell on Monday as the dollar rose following relatively bullish talk from the US Federal Reserve. In an address on Friday, US Fed Chair Janet Yellen said there was growing justification for a near-term interest rate hike. Hopes of an agreement to curtail production when producing countries meet in Algeria next month meanwhile seemed have to faded. In New York, a barrel of West Texas Intermediate for October delivery fell 66 cents to close at $46.98.North Sea Brent also fell 66 cents to settle at $49.26 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange in London.Prices had rallied earlier in August on hopes that the Russia and Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries could agree next to limit production in a bid to balance supply and demand and stabilize pricesRussia, which is not an OPEC member, is due to join next months informal meeting in Algeria at which participants are expected to discuss production.Market talk seems to have shifted to stances that could spoil an agreement to cap output, with some focusing on Iraqs recent request for oil companies to boost production, Timothy Evans of Citigroup said in a client note. Investors are also aware that Iran hopes to raise output to 4 million barrels per day by the end of next month, he added.

Dollar rises following uptick in US consumer spending

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar rose against the euro, the yen and the pound on Monday as US Commerce Department data showed consumer spending had risen in July. The rise in the dollar also followed a comparatively bullish outlook from US Fed chief Janet Yellen, who said Friday that justification for an interest rate hike was mounting. Toward 2100 GMT, the euro was at $1.1187, down from $1.1195 Friday, while the dollar stood at 101.88 yen, up from 101.77.The pound fell to $1.3105 from $1.3135 on Monday, a British bank holiday. The Commerce Department reported Monday that US consumer spending in July had risen 0.3 percent over June while core inflation had risen only 0.1 percent. Personal incomes were up 0.4 percent for the month.Yellens remarks on Friday at the annual Jackson Hole symposium on monetary policy were seen as raising the likelihood of interest rate action this year, which can increase demand for US currency.Markets have repriced rate expectations accordingly, with the implied probability of a rate increase by the end of this year now firmly above 50 percent, Erik Nelson of Wells Fargo wrote in a client note. The major currencies are broadly weaker in what is an otherwise light day for economic data and events.

I believe we can come back.We have to work hard, trust ourselves and show our skills in front of the cameras.Imad concedes England will be even more formidable with Ben Stokes able to bowl again, after figuring as a specialist batsman only in the first two matches, but he is convinced Pakistan will still measure up.Hes a great cricketer, a genuine all-rounder and one of the best (in the world), Imad said on Monday. When Ben Stokes is fit to bowl, England are definitely even stronger. But if we get ourselves right, were going to give them a tough time.Former World Cup winners Pakistan have slumped below all other Test-playing nations in the ICCs ODI table and Imad knows it is time to make amends for that embarrassment. Its the first time weve ever been number nine in the world, Imad said. But if we stay united - which we are - were going to show the cricketing world what were capable of, just like we did in the Test matches. Were number one in them, and were really looking forward to putting our rankings up in the one-dayers.Imads career-best 63 not out helped Pakistan recover from two for three at Lords, where they were then unable to defend 251 all out.The Swansea-born all-rounder is looking forward already to a weekend return to his native country, for the final match of the series in Cardiff. He knows much hard work will be needed for a happy homecoming, and believes Pakistan must simply cast aside their struggles to date. Its just cricket, and it can happen to any team, he said. Were ready, up for it. Whatever is gone is gone - its done.We have to get some runs on the board, and give our bowlers a chance.

South Africa hold aces despite collapse

CENTURION (AFP) - South Africa held on to a strong position despite a top-order batting collapse in their second innings on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand on Monday.South Africa were 105 for six at the close, an overall lead of 372 runs on a pitch at Centurions SuperSport Park offering assistance to bowlers, with swing, seam and uneven bounce.South African fast bowler Dale Steyn said his team would continue batting on Tuesday. The longer we bat, the longer the sun will bake on this wicket and the cracks will open wider. When you hit the deck theres always something happening here, he said.New Zealand hit back after conceding a first innings lead of 267, with Tim Southee and Trent Boult taking two wickets each to reduce South Africa to 47 for four. Doug Bracewell and Neil Wagner also picked up wickets, with only Quinton de Kock shining for the South Africans, with his second half-century of the match. It was a very pleasing last session for us, said Bracewell. We spoke about giving it everything and we came out with plenty of energy. But he acknowledged that New Zealand would have a difficult time batting last. Its a tough wicket to bat on, going up and down a bit, he said.South Africas three-pronged pace attack was mainly responsible for New Zealand being bowled out for 214 in their first innings. Steyn and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each and Vernon Philander claimed two. With star bowlers Steyn and Philander both returning from long-term injuries, it was the first time they had played in the same Test match as Rabada, South Africas 21-year-old cricketer of the year.It made a good combination, said Steyn.Vernon is a phenomenal bowler. He keeps it so tight so you feel free to run in (and attack) from the other end. And KG (Rabada) is bowling at 150 kmh and getting wickets. The combination proved relentless, although it took South Africa more than an hour to take the first wicket of the day, when Rabada trapped Henry Nicholls leg before wicket for 36.Only captain Kane Williamson was able to provide sustained resistance for New Zealand. He was last man out for 77. While his team-mates struggled, Williamson remained calm and well-organised, seemingly with time to spare as he combatted the pace threat. He batted for 286 minutes and faced 133 balls in an innings which included eight fours and a six.New Zealands resistance crumbled after the breakthrough, although South Africa lost control briefly when Rabada and Steyn peppered number ten batsman Neil Wagner with bouncers, probably in retaliation for Wagners short-pitched assault during South Africas first innings of 481 for eight declared.Wagner was struck on the helmet by Rabada but responded by slogging four fours and a six in an innings of 31 before he was caught behind off Steyn.Off-spinner Dane Piedt picked up the wicket of Tim Southee, while Ross Taylor was run out duringNew Zealands collapse on the second evening.Three of the first five wickets came through successful reviews by South Africa after their initial appeals had been turned down. After a maiden over from Southee to Stephen Cook to start the second innings, De Kock hit the first four balls of the next over from Boult for fours before hitting Southee for four and six off successive deliveries in the third over.New Zealand hit back, however, with three wickets in 10 balls. Cook was trapped in front by Boult for four before Southee dismissed Hashim Amla, caught at first slip, and JP Duminy, leg before wicket, in the next over.Captain Faf du Plessis and De Kock tried to rebuild the innings but first innings centurion Du Plessis made only six before he was caught at first slip off Boult.De Kock seemed untroubled by the struggles of his team-mates, going to his second half-century of the match off 42 balls, with eight fours and a six. But one ball later he received a vicious bouncer from Doug Bracewell which he gloved to gully.
