Oil prices continue rise on world markets

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices continued to rise on Monday, with benchmark crude moving up more than a dollar per barrel in both New York and London.A barrel of West Texas Intermediate for September delivery gained $1.22, rising to $43.02 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, a barrel of North Sea Brent for October delivery also rose $1.12 to $45.39 on the Intercontinental Exchange.Oil prices had a very bearish July, given recurring worries on the state of supply and inventories but have been rising for several trading days. The market continues to bounce, said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy. We fell all the way to the $40 levels and the correction seemed to be a little extreme. The market is refocusing on the expectations well have a drop in North American production levels and the expected increase in global fuel demand, said McGillian.Right now you see a covering rally, he added, and this triggers more buyers jumping in the market.According to Mike Lynch of Energy and Economic Research, oil markets may be reacting to rumors that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries may freeze output levels. The rumors OPEC is considering a freeze are giving a little bit of impetus to the bulls, he told AFP. Not sure it will last very long but for now, thats the only news thats really up there.

Dollar remains buoyant following US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar rose marginally against the euro, yen and British pound on Monday in largely tranquil currency markets. The movements followed last weeks encouraging employment numbers from the US Labor Department, likely to feed speculation of a US interest rate hike this year.By 1800 GMT, the euro was down slightly at $1.1081 versus $1.1087 at 2100 GMT on Friday. The dollar also gained on the yen, rising to 102.49 yen from 101.79 on Friday, while the pound fell to $1.3040 from $1.3072.The Labor Department reported Friday that the US economy had added 255,000 jobs in July, far outstripping analyst expectations.Signs the US economy is on track for stronger growth over the latter half of the year gave a shot in the arm to chances of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates by year-end, Western Union said in a currency market analysis.Americas higher rate outlook is a boon for the dollar, particularly against peers in Japan and Europe whose borrowing rates are below zero.

Taliban, IS claim Quetta hospital suicide bombing

Posted:

QUETTA (AFP) - At least 70 people died when a suicide bomb tore through a crowd of mourners gathered at a Pakistani hospital Monday, in an attack claimed by both the Taliban and Islamic State group. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for security forces to decimate terrorists after the blast at the Civil Hospital in the Balochistan provincial capital Quetta, which also wounded more than 100 people.Video footage showed bodies strewn on the ground among pools of blood and shattered glass as shocked survivors cried and tried to comfort one another. The bomber struck a crowd of some 200 people that had gathered to mourn the death of a senior local lawyer who had been assassinated earlier in the day. Many of the victims were clad in the black suits and ties traditionally worn by Pakistani lawyers. An AFP journalist was about 20 metres (70 feet) away when the bomb went off. There were huge black clouds and dirt, he said. I ran back to the place and saw dead bodies scattered everywhere and many injured people crying. There were pools and pools of blood around and pieces of human bodies and flesh.Nurses and lawyers wept as medics from inside the hospital rushed out to help dozens of injured, he said. Pervez Masi, who was injured by pieces of flying glass, said the blast was so powerful that we didnt know what had happened. So many friends were martyred, he said. Whoever is doing this is not human, he is a beast and has no humanity.Bomb disposal unit chief Abdul Razzaq told AFP it was a suicide attack. The bomber had strapped some eight kilograms (18 pounds) of explosives packed with ball bearings and shrapnel on his body, he said. The head of the provincial health department, doctor Masood Nausherwani, gave a death toll of 70, with 112 injured.A faction of the Pakistani Taliban, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, claimed responsibility for both the assassination of the lawyer and the blast at the hospital. A spokesman vowed it would carry out more attacks until the imposition of an Islamic system in Pakistan.Hours later, the Islamic State group also said it was behind the blast, which it claimed killed 200 people, the SITE monitoring agency reported. Middle Eastern jihadist group IS has been scrabbling for purchase in Pakistan, largely due to competition from well established extremist groups such as the Taliban. Sharif, who flew to Quetta just after the attack, said all state security institutions must respond with full might to decimate these terrorists. The bombing targeted a crowd made up mainly of lawyers and journalists who had gone to the hospital to mourn the president of the Balochistan Bar Association, who was shot dead on Monday.Bilal Anwar Kasi was attacked by two unidentified gunmen as he left his home for work.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack, saying it was particularly appalling that it targeted mourners at a hospital.Frances President Francois Hollande denounced the abominable act, while the European Union said there was no justification for such acts of terrorism. The US joined the chorus of condemnation, which the State Department said had targeted two of the most important pillars of every democracy -- the judiciary and the media. Pakistan is grimly accustomed to atrocities after a nearly decade-long insurgency. A military operation targeting insurgents was stepped up last year and saw the death toll from militant attacks fall to its lowest since the formation in 2007 of the umbrella Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).But analysts have warned the group is still able to carry out major attacks.Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, part of the TTP, also said it was behind the deadliest attack in Pakistan so far this year, a bombing in a crowded Lahore park that killed 75 people on Easter Sunday. The group has claimed responsibility for other suicide blasts, attacks on teams carrying out polio vaccinations and called for jihad in Myanmar.Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has major oil and gas resources, but is afflicted by Islamist militancy, sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and a separatist insurgency.Pakistani hospitals have been targeted by militants before, with a bomb killing 13 at a Karachi hospital in 2010.

England consider Rashid for Pakistan finale

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - England are giving serious thought to playing two spinners in the fourth Test against Pakistan at The Oval by handing a home debut to leg-break bowler Adil Rashid. The hosts went 2-1 up with one to play in the series after coming from behind to win the third Test by 141 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday.Rashid has been in and around the England squad all season, but is still waiting to play on home soil after making all his three career Test appearances against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates last year. But, with England set to tour Bangladesh and India -- where pitches often provide plenty of turn for slow bowlers -- later this year, Rashid could be called up at The Oval in south London as a second spinner alongside Moeen Ali. During last years Ashes, Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon took four wickets in his sides consolation win at The Oval.Asked if England were tempted to pick Rashid for the fourth Test, which starts on Thursday, Bayliss replied: Very. We saw last year at The Oval, the wicket had a bit in it for everyone.Lyon bowled very well there, got some spin and bounce.Rashid took seven for 61 in champions Yorkshires County Championship win over Warwickshire last week, after being released from Englands squad.Bayliss added: Ive thought Rashids been a chance for the last two or three Tests that weve played. At some stage, he will get an opportunity.Ali made his name as a top-order batsman before being handed the position of England frontline off-spinner following the retirement of Graeme Swann. It is not always a role that has suited Ali, but at Edgbaston -- where he was named man-of-the-match after scoring two fifties -- he played his part with the ball as Pakistan were dismissed for 201 on Sunday.Quite simply, the difference with his bowling in that spell was his discipline of length, said Bayliss.Weve all seen him before probably falling a little bit short, but I thought that spell he got it pretty much spot on, bowled a little bit wider of the off stump into the rough, coming into the stumps and putting the pressure on the batter. Its a bit harder (then) to run down the wicket and hit over the top and play reverse-sweeps and sweeps.I thought he put the pressure on very well there, the Australian added. The match alo saw James Anderson, Englands all-time leading wicket-taker, return to the top of the International Cricket Councils Test bowler rankings. But the Lancashire paceman fell foul of the umpires in Pakistans first innings when he was taken out of the attack for running on the pitch -- the second time this has happened to Anderson in 2016.Before that, he had lost his temper with both Joel Wilson and Bruce Oxenford, the two on-field umpires, when he was initially warned about straying into the danger area and Anderson later apologised for what he admitted was unacceptable behaviour.Anderson escaped any punishment from match referee Richie Richardson, the former West Indies captain, and Bayliss was happy with the way Anderson dealt with the fall-out.I think he did sort it out himself, Bayliss said.In the heat of the moment... he is a competitor, and I think you need guys in your team like that.If he slightly touched the line or went over the line, we fixed it up pretty quickly - and everything was sweet with the umpires.Hes been around enough now to know when he has maybe transgressed a little too far, and to pull his head in pretty quick.

South Africa bans four over match fixing

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Cricket South Africa said Monday they had banned four players following a match fixing probe of the 2015 domestic Twenty20 competition. The banned players were named as Jean Symes, Pumelela Matshikwe, Ethy Mbhalati and Thami Tsolekile, the former South African Test wicketkeeper. The banning of these four players follows a lengthy investigation, said the organisation in a statement. The players have been banned from the sport for between seven to 12 years following the probe of the domestic Twenty20 competition.Whilst there has been no evidence to suggest that an actual fix in any match was carried out, these players all participated in material discussions about match fixing, said Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat.Tsolekile, who received a 12-year-ban, is said to have failed to disclose to the authorities details of an approach to engage in corrupt conduct in the 2015 competition.Tsolekile, 35, toured England as South Africas back-up wicketkeeper in 2003 and played in three Test matches, two against India and one against England, in 2004. He remained on the fringes of the team and toured England and Australia in 2012 and the United Arab Emirates for a series against Pakistan in 2013 without winning further caps.Matshikwe, a bowler formerly contracted to the Lions, is said to have received a payment or incentive to fix a match. He was given a 10-year ban, and so was Mbhalati, a bowler formerly contracted to the Titans.Symes was handed a seven-year ban for failing to disclose to the authorities a payment given to him.Our attitude towards any form of corruption is clear and hence why we have imposed the firm sanctions, said Lorgat.Lorgat said investigations were still ongoing and declined to comment on the possibility of other players being involved. All the banned players have expressed regret for their offences.I deeply regret that at the end of my career, a career that I have devoted to the sport of cricket...I have conducted myself in a manner that amounts to a contravention of the ethical code of conduct of Cricket South Africa, said Symes. The bans came into effect on August 1.The International Cricket Council (ICC) praised the sanctions as rightly strong, adding that the players wont be allowed to compete in any league anywhere in the world. What is particularly satisfying to note is that it appears that any intended wrongdoing was disrupted before it happened, meaning the domestic games in question went ahead without any act of corruption being committed, said Richardson in a statement. The bans came more than six months after Gulam Bodi, another former international player, was banned for 20 years after admitting charges of contriving or attempting to fix matches in South Africas domestic Twenty20 competition.Bodi acted as an intermediary for international betting syndicates in approaching players involved in the tournament.Tony Irish, chief executive of both the South African Cricketers Association and the international players representative body, said it was a sad day for cricket but took heart from the fact that there had been a thorough investigation. Cricket has got these problems worldwide, said Irish. The positive is that our system has detected them and there has been a successful prosecution as a result of clean players coming forward, he added.

Lyon admits Aussies outclassed by Sri Lanka

GALLE (AFP) - Underfire Australia spinner Nathan Lyon admits his side have been totally outplayed in their series defeat to Sri Lanka and must learn fast to secure a consolation win.Despite the worlds top-ranked side hiring the legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan as a consultant for the tour, Australias spinners have struggled to adapt as their side lost the first two Tests of the three-match series. The 28-year-old Lyon has managed just nine wickets in four innings and faced criticism from his coach Darren Lehmann and skipper Steve Smith.Sri Lankas spinners took 18 of the 20 Australian wickets to fall in the second Test in Galle. By contrast Australias leading bowler was pace spearhead Mitchell Starc with 11 wickets.Lyon admitted he and fellow slow bowler Jon Holland had not asked enough questions of the Sri Lankan batsmen and had to improve in the final Test which starts on Saturday in Colombo.Youve got to give credit where credits due. Theyve totally outplayed us, said Lyon.Theres a lot of room for improvement, especially from myself I dare say, Lyon told reporters Sunday. Its now up to us to say no excuses, full stop, and go out there and get better and put in a good performance come the third Test, added Lyon, who is the only Australian offspinner to have taken 200 Test wickets.Australias cause was undermined when Lyons spin-bowling partner Steve OKeefe had to return home after the first Test defeat in Pallekele with a pulled hamstring, paving the way for Hollands debut in Galle. As spinners, we need to keep hitting the stumps ... I dont think Dutch (Holland) and myself probably did that to the best of our ability, said Lyon as he reflected on the 229-run defeat in Galle.I think your mindset needs to change over here. Its a hard place to play cricket. But I am learning to bowl better in the sub-continent.If we can keep improving, keep learning from our mistakes in the first two Test matches then were going the right way. While Australias spinners looked ordinary in Galle, their Sri Lankan counterparts were the standout performers with Dilruwan Perera taking 10 wickets in the match.

Australia's Head gets ODI call-up in Sri Lanka

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Left-handed batsman Travis Head was Monday added to the Australia one-day squad for the five-match series in Sri Lanka starting August 21.The 22-year-old, who is currently playing for Yorkshire in Englands county championship, will join the Test team in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Tuesday ahead of the third and final game.Having already lost the Test series after defeat in the first two matches, Australia will be looking to salvage some pride in the ODIs and two subsequent Twenty20 internationals.Travis is a long-term prospect for Australian cricket in all formats and we think he will benefit greatly from working in the conditions we have here in Sri Lanka, said Australias chairman of selectors Rod Marsh. He will arrive here a few days earlier than the other ODI players so he can take the opportunity to work with the Test team as they prepare for the third Test, Marsh added in a statement. The South Australia batsman, who made his ODI debut against West Indies in June, has some sub-continent experience after stints playing in the Indian Premier League.

Aussie spinner O'Keefe fined for hotel incident

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian Test spinner Stephen OKeefe has been fined under Cricket Australias code of behaviour after he was involved in an incident at a Sydney hotel over the weekend, CA said Monday.OKeefe, who returned early from Australias ill-fated tour of Sri Lanka with a hamstring injury, allegedly abused police, security staff and managers at The Steyne Hotel while intoxicated, reports said.OKeefe was charged with a breach of CAs Code of Behaviour -- conduct unbecoming of a player -- and accepted a fine of A$10,000 ($7,630).He was also told to undergo counselling and education as part of the sanctions, CA said.Police also issued OKeefe with an infringement notice for offensive behaviour at the hotel, meaning he must pay a separate fine. We take a zero-tolerance approach to this type of behaviour from players at any level in Australian cricket, Cricket Australia executive general manager Pat Howard said in a statement.Steve understands our expectations and that were extremely disappointed this situation occurred, particularly as he is recovering from an injury.OKeefe apologised for his actions and said: I know I failed to uphold the high standards expected of a NSW (New South Wales state) and Australian cricketer and apologise to all concerned.I take full responsibility for my actions and accept the sanction handed to me by Cricket Australia.
