Golf: Reed rallies to earn spot on US Ryder Cup team

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Patrick Reed came from behind to win The Barclays on Sunday to claim his fifth USPGA Tour title and a spot on the American Ryder Cup team. The 26-year-old Reed caught and passed 54-hole leader Rickie Fowler who stumbled to the finish by playing his final four holes in three over.Fowler failed to make the US team and will have to rely on a captains pick when Davis Love makes his final four selections in the coming weeks. It is awesome, said Reed, who earned $1.5 million for his first win of 2016. I worked hard with my coach the last couple weeks so it shows I am moving in the right direction.I am glad I was finally able to close one off.Reed finished at nine-under 275 for a one-stroke victory over Sean OHair (66) and Argentinas Emiliano Grillo (69), who tied for second.Top-ranked Jason Day of Australia (69) was two strokes back and tied for fourth with Gary Woodland (69) and world number seven Adam Scott of Australia (71) at the Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York.Fowler (74) was three strokes back and tied for seventh with Ryan Moore and Jason Kokrak, who each carded 69s.World number three Jordan Spieth (69) tied for 10th with Justin Thomas (71) at four shots behind. The Barclays marked the start of the PGA Tour playoffs but it also signalled the end of the Ryder Cup qualifying for the Americans.Dustin Johnson, Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker and Brooks Koepka already made the team. Reed, Brant Snedeker, Zach Johnson rounded out the team when the points standings closed on Sunday.World number 14 Reed bolstered his chances by being the 18-hole leader and then holding the outright lead at 36 holes. His mixed bag round on Sunday included four birdies and three bogeys.Love will announce three of his four Ryder Cup captains picks September 12 and save his fourth and final pick for September 25th.We have an extremely talented group of eight automatic qualifiers for this years US Ryder Cup team, Love said. Each has a real passion for the Ryder Cup. The European team consists of four players from a European Tour money list along with five from a list of world ranking points.Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Henrik Tenson and Chris Wood are in by virtue of the money list, while Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Andy Sullivan and Matt Fitzpatrick secured spots through the world rankings.Clarke is due in the coming days to announce his three captains picks for the tournament, which begins next month in Minnesota. The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings advance to next weekends Deutsche Bank Championship, the second playoff event at the 7,207-yard, par-71 course in Boston, Massachusetts.

Cycling: De la Cruz takes stage 9, shock Vuelta lead

Posted:

OVIEDO (AFP) - Spanish rider David de la Cruz won stage nine and claimed the overall lead of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday with a decisive attack 500 metres from the line.De la Cruz beat out Belgian Dries Devenyns and Italys Moreno Moser in a time of 3hrs 47min 56sec on the 164.5km stage from Cistierna to Oviedo. The general classification favourites including overnight leader Nairo Quintana and Tour de France winner Chris Froome finished 2min 56sec back. That gap allowed De la Cruz to jump to the top of the standings, 22 seconds clear of Quintana with his Movistar teammate Alejandro Valverde 19 seconds further back.Froome slips to fourth, eight seconds further adrift, in his quest to become the first man in 38 years to win both the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana in the same year.Despite another punishing category-two climb to the finish over the Alto de Naranco, a 12-man breakaway was never reeled in by the peloton after building up a five-minute lead. That sparked a series of attacks from the strong breakaway group, but it eventually came down to a clash between De la Cruz and Devenyns for the stage win.But when De la Cruz kicked for the line in the final kilometre, Devenyns couldnt live with him.I wasnt thinking about the lead at the end. I was so close to winning the stage, that was my main objective, said De la Cruz.It was very hard to ride with Devenyns because he was hard to beat, but I am the leader as well, I cant believe it.The 27-year-old was in tears and kissed the red jersey as he stood atop the podium. And with another gruelling summit finish up the special category Mirador de la Reina to come on Monday before the first rest day of the race on Tuesday, De la Cruz is intent on savouring his moment in red.Tomorrow is a very hard stage to Covadonga, but for the moment, we have got the stage and the leadership, so lets see what happens and enjoy ourselves.Three-time Vuelta winner Alberto Contador also finished among the general classification group to remain 2min 01sec off the lead in seventh overall.Contador suffered a difficult first week as his Tinkoff-Saxo team lost 52 seconds on the opening team time-trial stage and he suffered a huge crash on stage seven. However, he made up some time on Froome and Valverde on Saturday and is hoping with more time to heal he can launch a bid for a record-equalling fourth Vuelta win.I passed the day without problems, lets see if tomorrow I keep improving. First, I want to maintain this level and then, obviously, if theres a chance I will attack, said Contador.Yesterday was a good day for me, because the most important thing was to survive and, finally, I even took time off some favourites.Today was a quieter day, we already knew Alto del Naranco is a climb where it is difficult to make gaps. The legs have been good, now the important thing is to rest and to keep working with the physiotherapists in order to be a bit better tomorrow.

Tokyo stocks rally as exporters surge on weaker Yen

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo stocks surged in early trade Monday after the yen weakened on Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellens suggestion that US interest rates could rise in the near term.Japans consumer electronic manufacturers and automakers such as Toyota and Nissan got a sharp boost from the yens slide against the greenback following Yellens remarks Friday at the Jackson Hole symposium of global central bankers. The US central bank head said the case for a rate increase had strengthened in recent months but did not give a clear signal of timing.Theres no reason to wait another few months for a US rate hike, Shoji Hirakawa, chief global strategist at Tokai Tokyo Research Center, told Bloomberg News. The US put off a rate increase in wake of Brexit, and the view seems to be that the state of the countrys economy has further improved. In forex markets, the dollar rose to 102.05 yen from 101.77 yen in New York and 100.48 yen in Tokyo earlier Friday.A weaker yen is a plus for Japans exporters as it boosts their overseas profitability.Sentiment among Japanese investors also improved on the back of a weekend speech by Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda at the annual Jackson Hole conference. In his remarks, Kuroda said there is no doubt the BoJ has ample space for taking additional easing measures.About 20 minutes after the opening bell, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index soared 2.16 percent, or 353.34 points, to 16,714.05, rebounding after ending in the red for two straight days. The broader Topix index of all first-section shares rose 2.02 percent, or 25.97 points, to 1,313.87.Japanese investors will now be keeping an eye on US and Japanese jobs data, as well as other figures from Tokyo including household spending and factory output this week.In early share trading, Toyota and Honda surged more than three percent and rival Nissan gained 2.6 percent.Factory robot maker Fanuc tacked on 3.6 percent and Panasonic gained 2.9 percent.Energy-linked shares also rose, with Inpex soaring 3.3 percent and refiner JX Holdings 1.6 percent higher.

French champions PSG beaten by Monaco

Posted:

PARIS, Aug 28, 2016 (AFP) - Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first defeat under new coach Unai Emery on Sunday, going down 3-1 to a rampant Monaco at the Stade Louis II.Joao Moutinho put Monaco ahead before a Fabinho penalty doubled their lead just before half-time to leave the visitors up against it.Edinson Cavani pulled a goal back in the second half but a Serge Aurier own-goal late on secured a deserved win for the home side that lifts them level on seven points with early league leaders Guingamp.PSG lie a point behind in fifth place after seeing their perfect start to the campaign ended in the principality. It is a defeat that will raise major questions about the capital clubs strategy after a summer in which they sacked coach Laurent Blanc and lost their talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.Spaniard Emery was brought in from Sevilla fresh from winning the Europa League but it was always going to be difficult to find a successor to Ibrahimovic.PSG went unbeaten through their first 27 league games last season before eventually being beaten at the end of February while in the two previous seasons they did not lose in Ligue 1 until December. The warning signs had been there in their opening two wins against Bastia and Metz, in which Paris failed to entirely convince despite winning.Against a Monaco side fresh from beating Villarreal to qualify for the Champions League group stage, they fell behind in the 13th minute and never recovered.Moutinho, a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, got the opener with a terrific first-time strike from a Djibril Sidibe cross and Cavani squandered a decent chance to level the scores before Monaco won a penalty right at the end of the first half.David Luiz was penalised for a foul in the area and Fabinho stepped up to beat Kevin Trapp from 12 yards for his fourth goal from a spot-kick already this season.Luiz was taken off just after the hour mark, with Belgian international Thomas Meunier coming on for his Ligue 1 debut, and Paris got a goal back moments later, Aurier heading across the box for Cavani to head in.But Paris could not find an equaliser and Monaco secured the points 10 minutes from the end when Aurier, attempting to cut out a Sidibe pass destined for Nabil Dirar, turned the ball into his own net.Earlier Saint-Etienne drew 0-0 with Toulouse at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard while Bordeaux edged a tight encounter with Nantes 1-0 thanks to a Diego Rolan goal in the first half.Guingamp, who drew 2-2 away at Monaco on the opening day of the season, are top after a 2-0 victory away at promoted Nancy on Saturday.Nice are also level on points with the leaders after a 1-1 draw at home to Lille while Lyons perfect start to the league season was ended in a 4-2 defeat at Dijon.

England football team manager announces squad for World Cup qualifiers

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Sam Allardyce marked his first squad announcement as England manager on Sunday by including uncapped West Ham United midfielder Michail Antonio in a 23-man party for next weeks World Cup qualifier in Slovakia.Antonio was included on the same day he scored for the Hammers in their 3-1 loss away to Premier League leaders Manchester City. The 26-year-old has adjusted well to life in the Premier League since joining the Hammers from Nottingham Forest a year ago.He scored nine goals in 32 appearances for the London club last season, while his two most recent Hammers games have seen Antonio head in against both Bournemouth and City.I think hes in outstanding form, Allardyce told the Football Associations website as he explained his decision to select Antonio. This is another lad with a great journey -- its a fantastic journey that hes been on, from non-league to now an international call-up. He scored nine goals in his first season and hes a terrific athlete, a good crosser and a goal-scorer.Im looking forward to him coming, and looking forward to meeting everybody. Hopefully we will have a good few days preparation and get to know each other on the basis of trying to go and win in Slovakia.Evertons Ross Barkley, an unused squad member during Englands miserable Euro 2016 campaign that concluded with the embarrassment of a defeat by Iceland, was dropped despite scoring two goals in his first four matches this season.James Milner, who has retired from international football, was omitted along with Manchester Uniteds Marcus Rashford, now in the Under-21 squad, and the injured duo of Ryan Bertrand and Jack Wilshere. As expected goalkeeper Joe Hart was retained despite losing his first-team place at City under new manager Pep Guardiola while, equally unsurprisingly, Allardyce opted against recalling John Terry, the retired former England captain, after indicating he could contact the Chelsea centre-half.However, there were recalls for Danny Drinkwater, a midfielder with English champions Leicester City, defenders Phil Jagielka (Everton) and Luke Shaw (Manchester United), as well as Arsenals Theo Walcott after they all failed to make it into former England manager Roy Hodgsons squad in France.Allardyce has yet to announce his England captain, although Manchester Uniteds Wayne Rooney, who skippered the side at Euro 2016, was included in Sundays squad as a midfielder.Rooney, Englands record goalscorer, played as a central midfielder in France but United manager Jose Mourinho has restored him to an attacking role and Allardyce is expected to do likewise.England squad to play Slovakia in a 2018 World Cup Group F qualifier in Trnava on Sunday, September 4 (1600 GMT kick-off):Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Tom Heaton (Burnley)Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Michail Antonio (West Ham United), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)Strikers: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

Pope mulls Italy quake visit as survivors dig in

Posted:

AMATRICE, Italy (AFP) - Pope Francis said Sunday he wanted to visit the quake-hit villages of central Italy, as survivors and rescue workers dug in for the long haul with colder weather approaching.Speaking to worshippers in St Peters Square in Rome, Francis said he wanted to visit those hit by Wednesdays deadly earthquake which brought devastation to a string of mountain villages in a remote area straddling the Umbria, Marche and Lazio regions. As soon as possible, I hope to come and see you, to bring you the comfort of faith, the tenderness of a father and a brother, he said.Nearly 300 people died in the quake and hundreds more were injured, and although rescue efforts were winding down, officials warned it was feasible there are still a dozen or so bodies under the rubble. With hopes of finding anyone else still alive fading fast, rescue workers and survivors were turning their attention to the future as temperatures start to fall. Were getting ready for winter. Given whats happened in other quakes, were going to spend winter here, said Emidio Chiappini from the devastated village of SantAngelo. The government has pledged to support immediate reconstruction and Chiappini said he hoped authorities would send pre-fabricated housing to stave off the frost that will soon descend on the mountainous region. The Italian government has freed up around 60 million euros ($67 million) in immediate aid, which will be bolstered by approximately 10 million euros in donations.Basically, we know were going to be here for three or four months. Thats not official, but we have got the equipment for that, said a volunteer for the civil protection agency who gave his name as Nicola. The government is reportedly poised to name a special commissioner to oversee the huge reconstruction operation, which is being hampered by aftershocks, with two more, measuring 3.7 and 4.4, hitting the region on Sunday afternoon.Since the pre-dawn quake on Wednesday, residents nerves have been rattled by more than 1,800 aftershocks. With the immediate grief fading, the focus was switching to how such damage could have been wrought in an area so close (50 kilometres/32 miles) to LAquila, which was hit by a 2009 earthquake in which more than 300 people perished.Back then, the civil protection agency had to care for some 65,000 people. Nine months later, 10,000 of them were still living in temporary accommodation.By comparison, there are only 5,000 permanent residents living in the areas affected by Wednesdays earthquake.Prosecutor Giuseppe Saieva has indicated that property owners who commissioned building work suspected of being sub-standard could be held responsible for contributing to the quakes deadly impact. If the buildings had been constructed as they are in Japan they wouldnt have collapsed, he told La Repubblica daily. If it emerges that individuals cut corners, they will be pursued and those that have made mistakes will pay a price, the prosecutor said.On Monday, experts were expected to visit all the local schools to decide if any were still safe and to draw up plans for alternatives in time for the start of the new term in mid-September.The lessons from Aquila in 2009 have not been learned, fumed Adriana Cavaglia, a member of the national council of geologists as she surveyed the ruins in SantAngelo. Not far away, property developer Sergio Evangelista is happy to be able to finally go back and sleep in his own home, which was built in line with the building regulations and was almost untouched. The village church, however, which was inaugurated on August 13 following a clumsy renovation, collapsed.Atemio Scienzo, a craftsman who survived the quake, said he was concerned that endemic corruption could hamper reconstruction efforts. After the emergency comes the period of reconstruction and thats the important bit. It has to happen quickly and the funds have to arrive, he said.If half of it gets lost en route, as often happens, there will be a problem.Meanwhile, demonstrations of solidarity continued across the country with thousands turning out in Turin to eat pasta allamatriciana, the famous dish which originated in Amatrice, with the proceeds of the meal to be sent to the survivors.

Football: Rakitic winner edges Barca past Athletic Bilbao

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Ivan Rakitics first-half header maintained Barcelonas 100 percent start to the La Liga season as the champions withstood a wave of late pressure to win 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.Rakitic finished off an excellent team move after 20 minutes, but with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez uncharacteristically wayward in front of goal, Athletic nearly grabbed a point when Benat Etxebarrias free-kick flew just wide late on.Barca join Real Madrid and top of the table Las Palmas as the only sides with two wins from their first two games. Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid are already four points off the pace after disappointing draws against newly-promoted Alaves and Leganes. The games here are always very similar, Rakitic told BeIN Sports. It is very intense, there is a lot of pressing. Both teams played well, but in the end we deserved the win.Still without Neymar due his exertions in winning Olympic gold and the injured Andres Iniesta, Barca demonstrated their greater strength in depth this season as new recruits Denis Suarez and Samuel Umtiti shone, whilst Arda Turan proved an able deputy for Neymar alongside Messi and Suarez. In terms of tempo it was a frenetic game, not usually the kind you get at this stage of the season, said Barca boss Luis Enrique. The result strengthens us. It is very difficult to play against Athletic Bilbao in San Mames. Im very happy. The return of Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal in place of the departed Claudio Bravo to Manchester City was Barca coach Luis Enriques only change from the opening day 6-2 thrashing of Real Betis.Ter Stegen was featuring in La Liga for just the eighth time in his third season with the Catalan giants as Bravo had been first choice in the league for the past two seasons. And the Germans notorious desire to play out from the back nearly cost Barca the opener on 12 minutes when he gifted the ball to Benat, but made amends by repelling the midfielders fierce effort with his face.Barca went ahead in fine style eight minutes later when Suarez fed Turan down the left and the Turks cross was met with a bullet header at the back post by Rakitic. The champions failed to take advantage of a series of chances to extend their lead either side of the break as Gorka Iraizoz turned Messis header to safety before Turan shot into the side-netting with a furious Suarez waiting for a cross in the middle.Messi and Suarez both fired inches wide when presented with the type of chances they normally convert early in the second period.Athletics attacking threat increased after the introduction of Raul Garcia as the former Atletico Madrid midfielder fired inches wide before Inaki Williamss effort moments later was placed too close to Ter Stegen.Suarez skewed another huge chance wide on the break and Barca were nearly made to pay for their rare profligacy when Benats fine free-kick curled inches wide into the side-netting five minutes from time. And only a sensational goal line clearance from Eneko Boveda denied Suarez his goal with the last kick of the game.Despite their perfect starts to the campaign, Madrid and Barca trail Las Palmas at the top of the table after the Canary Islanders smashed Granada 5-1 with new signing Kevin-Prince Boateng again on target.Boateng also netted in a 4-2 win at Valencia on Monday and displayed a t-shirt honouring the nearly 300 victims of an earthquake in central Italy this week after scoring having spent three years at AC Milan.Former Liverpool winger Nabil El Zhar scored twice, whilst Momo and Sergio Araujo were also on target for Las Palmas.Alaves remain unbeaten after a 0-0 draw with Sporting Gijon.

Formula One: Nico Rosberg wins Belgian Grand Prix

Posted:

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS (AFP) - Nico Rosberg rekindled his world championship ambitions with victory in Sundays chaotic crash-hit Belgian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton staged an astonishing fightback to finish third.Rosbergs delight was reduced by his Mercedes team-mate Hamiltons damage-limiting and thrilling drive to finish behind Daniel Ricciardo, second in a Red Bull, after starting from the back row of the grid.I would definitely have taken that before the race, said Hamilton.I am so happy and proud of everyone. I was not expecting it and I had no idea what we were capable of, but I had a positive mental attitude today and it worked.Rosberg, 31, who started from his third successive pole position, led from start to finish in a 44-laps race fractured by accidents and incidents to secure his first victory in Belgium and his sixth of the season.Hamilton, who started 21st after being handed 60 grid position penalties for taking three new power-units through the weekend, remains ahead of Rosberg in the title race with 232 points to 223, a lead of nine. Its been great to get the win today, but Lewis starting at the back made it easier for me, said Rosberg. Hell be back at Monza, as usual, and it will be a great battle and another good weekend.German Nico Hulkenberg finished fourth ahead of his Force India team-mate Sergio Perez, as the Silverstone-based team overhauled rivals Williams in the constructors championship.Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari recovered from a first-corner collision with his own team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to take sixth ahead of Fernando Alonso, who had started 22nd on the grid.Valtteri Bottas was eighth for Williams ahead of Raikkonen and Brazilian Felipe Massa.Hamiltons podium finish from 21st on the grid was a record for the circuit on a day of serial incidents, accidents and collisions. The race was red-flagged after nine laps in the worst incident when Dane Kevin Magnussen crashed heavily but limped away from his wrecked Renault car with only a damaged ankle.Trouble started right from the outset, however, with Vettel and Ferrari teammate Raikkonen colliding on the first corner. On lap two Spaniard Carlos Sainzs Toro Rosso suffered a spectacular right rear tyre explosion, which triggered a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period.Another, more alarming, accident brought out the Safety Car itself on lap nine -- Magnussen losing control of his Renault as he exited Eau Rouge and smashed into the barriers at around 300 kph on the high-speed rise to Raidillon. As the debris settled, the severity of the damage to the barriers required repair and the red flag came out to halt the racing with, remarkably, back row starters Hamilton and Alonso -- with a combined total of 120 grid-place penalties -- in fifth and fourth respectively. The pause allowed the teams to pit their cars for a rolling re-start behind the Safety Car, Rosberg taking medium tyres and most others, including Alonso and Hamilton, taking softs.By the end of lap 11, Rosberg led by 1.4 seconds and Hamilton was sizing up a pass on Alonso which he completed on lap 12, sweeping by for fourth.Further back, a bruising battle between Raikkonen and Verstappen saw them bang wheels in a series of scraps, the young Dutchmans aggression upsetting the Finn whose radio comments required constant bleeps to remove profanities directed at a rival half his age.By lap 18, Rosberg remained in control, but was aware that Hamilton had risen from 21st to third, the Englishman passing Hulkenberg on the outside on Kemmel Straight.Rosbergs lead was 5.5 seconds at half-distance, when Hamilton pitted for a new set of softs. He rejoined ninth, his stop slowed slightly by a rear jack problem.Rosberg remained in serene control, 12 seconds ahead of Ricciardo, with eight laps to go after Hamilton had made a third stop, rejoined and passed Hulkenberg again in his chase after the leader.

Ben Stokes eager to bowl against Pakistan

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ben Stokes is looking forward to giving England an extra bowling option as they go in search of a one-day international series-clinching win against Pakistan at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.England will head to Nottingham 2-0 up with three to play after convincing wins at Southampton and Lords.All-rounder Stokes has been involved in both those victories but as a batsman only after a calf problem prevented England one-day captain Eoin Morgan deploying him as a member of the hosts pace attack. But the Durham star hopes to be firing on all cylinders come Tuesdays day/night clash in the English Midlands. The plan from the start was to be fit and ready to bowl by the third ODI and by the way things are going it is looking likely I will be an option for Eoin in Nottingham if needed, he said after Saturdays four-wicket win at Lords.I have done all the prep to get myself fit and put my hand up to say I am ready to bowl.Ive bowled for about 15 minutes flat out and all the build-up stuff I needed to do has been done, so if I am needed hopefully Eoin will ask.An outstanding fielder, the 25-year-old Stokes said not been able to bowl had proved a frustrating experience. Its so boring. Honestly, it makes the fielding innings seem a lot longer because if you bowl 10 overs it kind of takes 20 overs out of the game for you, he said. But I pride myself on my fielding as well and one thing that keeps me switched on the whole time is that I dont want to give away any runs.I want to try and stop as many as possible -- and applying myself to that has got me through the fact I am not bowling. But its nice to get that confidence from your captain and coach saying we want you to play as a specialist batsman -- so I have wanted to make sure I make some runs in these first two matches.I think that knowing I wasnt going to bowl in these first two games I have worked longer on my batting in the build up days in training. Its been quite nice to solely concentrate on the batting side in these first two.England, whose 50-over cricket has improved markedly since their dismal first-round exit from last years World Cup, have so far dominated a Pakistan side who are a lowly ninth in the one-day international rankings. But Stokes played down talk of a 5-0 whitewash by saying: We could spill into dangerous territory if we start to think too far ahead. We have gone 2-0 up in the series because we have been playing the better cricket. If we were to think we have won it already and slip up on what we have been doing that could be the worst thing we could do.We havent won the series yet so. Weve got the next one to do that, so well still be trying to improve on these performances.

Germany, France, Poland call for closer ties post Brexit

Posted:

WEIMAR, Germany (AFP) - The German, French and Polish foreign ministers vowed Sunday to increase ties between their countries when Britain leaves the EU to secure a safer and more effective union.Confronted by unparallelled challenges in Europe... (we must) intensify cooperation and create a new drive, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Witold Waszczykowski said in a joint statement. They were gathered in the eastern German town of Weimar to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Weimar Triangle political forum. They vowed to reinforce the foundations of European integration... aspiring to a more flexible EU that reflects the different ambitions of member states regarding increased integration once Britain had left the bloc.Talks between the 27 EU nations remaining in the bloc are likely to be challenging, as Berlins preferred vision of a centralised, federal Europe clashes with proposals for a confederation of nation states popular among leaders of eastern EU members. The three foreign ministers gathered in Weimar also called for the blocs combined foreign and security policies to be strengthened with the creation of an annual European Security Council meeting of EU heads of government.Their comments came as German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday that the refusal of some EU countries to accept Muslim refugees is unacceptable and called for quotas to divide the influx throughout the bloc.We know that there is no simple answer to these challenges, but we are determined to confront them together in a spirit of renewed mutual confidence, said the ministers statement. The Weimar Triangle, created in 1991, is a consultative body that promotes cooperation and common interests between the three EU states.
