IOC bans four after retests of London, Beijing samples

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 10, 2016 (AFP) - The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday stripped Ukrainian javelin thrower Oleksandr Pyatnytsya of his silver medal from the 2012 Olympics as it announced the first sanctions after retests on doping samples from the London and Beijing Games. The sanctions against four athletes were the first announced after 98 competitors were found to have failed doping tests at London and Beijing in 2008 using new analysis techniques.Women weightlifters from Turkey and Armenia and Belarus hammer thrower were disqualified from the Rio Games following the new tests. The IOC ordered new tests on hundreds of samples from London and Beijing after investigations by the World Anti-Doping Agency found Russian sport was involved in mass state-sponsored doping.Pyatnytsyas silver medal throw at the London Games was only seven centimetres short of winner Keshorn Walcott. He was found to have taken the steroid turinabol. The Ukrainian did not dispute the finding nor turn up for any of the disciplinary hearings, according to the IOC.Nurcan Taylor, who competed in the 48kg weightlifting in Beijing, was found to have taken the steroid stanozolol.Hripsime Lhursjudyan of Armenia came 11th in the 75kg category in Beijing. She also took stanozolol, according to an IOC statement.Belarus hammer thrower Pavel Kryvitksi was accused of taking anabolic steroids stanozolol and turinabol. He came 28th in the London Olympics but was fourth at the European Championships in 2014.

Defending champions Leicester face tough challenge for title

Posted:

LONDON, Aug 10, 2016 (AFP) - After writing the Premier Leagues greatest fairytale with their astonishing title triumph last season, Claudio Ranieris side find themselves under siege from big-spending rivals determined to end their reign.Ranieris men made a mockery of their status as 5,000-1 outsiders as Jamie Vardy, NGolo Kante and Riyad Mahrez emerged as genuine stars and carried Leicester to the title a year after they narrowly avoided relegation.Showing a remarkable refusal to crack under pressure despite their lack of big-match experience, Leicester finished a staggering 10 points clear of second placed Arsenal.Having lost only three times in 38 league games, no-one could quibble about Leicesters right to call themselves English champions for the first time. But to some, Leicesters rise was aided by the complete lack of a sustained challenge from any of Englands traditional superpowers.Previous champions Chelsea surrendered the title with a whimper and Arsenal were consistent only in their inconsistency, while Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool all underachieved.Ranieris side are unlikely to have such an easy ride this time as City, United and Chelsea all look stronger as their new managers splash out on a host of costly signings.Leicester have tried to keep up with the elite, breaking their transfer record twice within a week as they spent 13 million on French midfielder Nampalys Mendy and 16 million on Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa.Ranieri has also signed goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, defender Luis Hernandez and winger Bartosz Kapustka. But Leicesters spending was dwarfed by Paul Pogbas world record 89 million move to United and Citys 47.5 million capture of John Stones, while Chelsea paid 30 million to sign the influential Kante. It is Ranieris ability to find a replacement for Kante that will define Leicesters title defence.Kante was a one-man wrecking ball in central midfield as his ferocious tackling and astute interceptions intimidated opponents and set the tone for Leicesters glorious campaign.- Smarter -===========With Kante moving on, Ranieri has turned to Mendy and Wales international Andy King to fill the void.Mendy is likely to be Kantes long-term replacement, but while he gets up to speed with the Premier League, it is the more experienced King who could start in Saturdays opener at Hull.If Chelsea bought Kante, its because he played as two players last season, Ranieri said. Now everybody must understand that there is no Kante, so we have to think different and close space quicker. We must be smarter.King knows it is essential to quickly prove Kante wont be missed, especially given the improved challenges from the top clubs. We know we upset the apple cart last season with what we did and we are expecting a reaction from the top teams, King said.We have got that, not just from Manchester United, but from Manchester City and Chelsea too. Arsenal as well.It isnt something we werent expecting but we are confident in our own ability, confident in our squad and team here that with hard work we can cause a few upsets again.Retaining the services of England striker Jamie Vardy, who scored 24 league goals before rejecting the chance to join Arsenal in the close-season, ensures Leicester will retain their spiky edge. But the additional demands of competing in the Champions League might force Ranieri to tinker with his team more than he would prefer. The Italians clever refusal to publicly talk up Leicesters prospects should keep the pressure off his players and he was back to his old tricks when he insisted his first target was simply to avoid relegation.I will start with the same philosophy and humility. What Leicester have achieved has been fantastic but now 40 points is the target, then we will see how many months left to the end of the season, Ranieri said.

Football: Defending champion USA women held to a draw by Colombia

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 10, 2016 (AFP) - The USA womens football teams Olympic winning streak was ended by Catalina Usmes stoppage time equaliser and an uncharacteristic howler from controversial goalkeeper Hope Solo in a 2-2 draw with Colombia on Tuesday.Meanwhile, two-time world champions Germany, Australia and France all booked their place in Fridays quarter-finals.Solo has been taunted by chants of Zika in Brazil for extravagant social media posts showing her draping a mosquito net over her head to avoid the virus at the Games. And a big crowd in Manaus that had gathered at the Arena da Amazonia ahead of Brazils clash with South Africa later on Tuesday revelled in Solos pain when she let Usmes free-kick slip between her legs to hand Colombia a shock 26th minute lead.US coach Jill Ellis had left stars Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath on the bench with progression to the last eight already assured, but captain Carli Lloyd did start and made another telling contribution for the equaliser after scoring in the first two games against France and New Zealand.Lloyds driven effort was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Sandra Sepulveda, but Crystal Dunn followed up to tap home the rebound.Mallory Pugh drilled the USA in front, but their winning streak stretching back to a group stage defeat to Norway in Beijing eight years ago was ended when Usme grabbed her second of the game in stoppage time.Despite the point Colombia bow out at the group stage.Two-time world champions Germany sneaked into the quarter-finals despite Melissa Tancredis double maintaining Canadas perfect record in Brazil with a 2-1 win in Brasilia.Canada topped Group E as Tancredi cancelled out Melanie Behringers early penalty before striking the winner on the hour mark for the 2012 bronze medallists.Germany edged out Australia for second place by just one goal on goal difference after the Matildas smashed Zimbabwe 6-1. However, the Africans spirits werent crushed on their first ever tournament appearance as they jubilantly celebrated Emmaculate Msipas injury-time consolation.Australia progress to the last eight as one of the two best third-placed sides.France lie in wait for Canada in Sao Paulo as Eugenie Le Sommer and a brace from Louisa Cadamuro handed them a 3-0 win over New Zealand to take second spot behind the USA in Group G.Brazil, who have put their struggling male counterparts to shame with thrilling wins over China and Sweden, hope to continue their momentum with five-time World Player of the Year Marta to the fore against South Africa. In the other game in Group E, China face Sweden in Brasilia with a draw enough to see both sides take the final two quarter-final places.

Oil prices down as OPEC meeting awaited

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell slightly on world markets on Tuesday, with investors taking profits after consecutive rises in recent days.A barrel of West Texas Intermediate for September delivery fell 25 cents to $42.77 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after having risen nearly a dollar and a half the day before. In London, a barrel of North Sea Brent for October delivery fell 41 cents to $44.98 on the Intercontinental Exchange. The slight declines followed Mondays announcement of an unscheduled meeting next month by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, fueling speculation of measures to stabilize prices.Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak reportedly said his country would be willing to discuss a freeze if OPEC raises the matter. After a bearish July, prices rebounded in recent days, following stronger-than-expected US hiring figures and a general reevaluation of the likelihood of a US interest rate hike. Its quiet today. I think you may see a bit of profit taking, said John Kilduff of Again Capital. This is a short-covering rally with record short interest in crude oil, Kilduff said, adding that rumor of possible collaboration between Russia and OPEC was also influencing market decisions.

Dollar weakens after poor productivity numbers

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell against the euro and the yen on Tuesday following US government figures which showed a decline in second-quarter productivity.Towards 2100, the euro was at $1.1115, up from $1.1084 at 2100 GMT the day before. The dollar fell to 101.88 yen, down from 102.45.However, the British pound fell slightly to $1.3000 from $1.3040.The Labor Department reported Tuesday that second-quarter productivity had fallen 0.5 percent, marking a decline for the third consecutive quarter, a negative result which could lessen the likelihood of an increase in US interest rates in the near future.Surprisingly robust second-quarter job figures published Friday had helped keep the dollar strong in recent days.Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset Management told AFP that investors were taking profits made since the jobs report but that markets otherwise were without direction.

Serena Williams shocked by Elina Svitolina in straight sets

Posted:

Top seed and defending champion Williams was clearly struggling with a right shoulder injury as she was stunned 6-4, 6-3 by Svitolina, 13 years her junior. The better player won, said Williams, who served up eight double faults, including five in one game in the second set. She also hit 37 unforced errors. It was a great opportunity. It didnt work out the way I wanted it to, but at least I was able to make it to Rio. That was one of my goals. Defeat for the 34-year-old means that the Rio tournament has lost both its number one players before the quarter-finals after Novak Djokovic went out in the first round. Only three of the top 10 seeds have made it to the last-eight of the womens draw. The Rio Games -- and possibly her Olympic career -- are now over for Serena after she and sister Venus were deposed as doubles champions in the first round. Williams was joined at the exit on Tuesday by third seed and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza who lost to Puerto Ricos Monica Puig. However, there were no such problems for defending mens champion Andy Murray and 2008 winner Rafael Nadal who coasted into the third round in straight sets. Svitolina, 21, will face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova for a place in the semi-finals. Wimbledon champion Williams was clearly hampered by the shoulder injury which forced her to skip the Montreal event. At one point, she screamed in pain, shoulder, shoulder. She even served up five double faults in the seventh game of the second set as she suffered her earliest ever loss at an Olympic singles event. I didnt expect that I could win. I stayed in the moment, relaxed and went for my shots especially in second set because it was really tight, said Svitolina, the world number 20. Muguruzas post-French Open slump continued when she slipped to a worrying 6-1, 6-1 loss to Puig, the world number 34. Puig, 22, closed in on what would be only Puerto Ricos ninth Olympic medal and will face Germanys Laura Siegemund for a semi-final spot. - Puig has goosebumps - ======================= Muguruza refused to admit that she has found it tough to adjust to being a Grand Slam champion for the first time. Her results since the French Open in June tell a different story. Before arriving in Rio, she lost in the first round at Mallorca and Montreal and made just the second round at Wimbledon. I didnt find a way to beat her but I am over it. I have doubles and mixed (with Nadal) so I want to make sure I am not left with this bad taste, said the Spaniard. Puig has had a breakout season, starting the year at 92 and now standing on the cusp of the top 30. I still have goosebumps, said Puig. Second seed Murray raced into the last 16, blitzing Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 6-1. Nadal, the third seed, was equally ruthless, claiming a seventh win in eight clashes against Italys Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3. Murray will face Fabio Fognini of Italy for a quarter-final spot. Fognini saved two match points to defeat Benoit Paire 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5). Minutes later, French team officials said that Paire was being expelled from the Games for flouting rules. Nadal, like Murray looking to become the first player to win two singles golds, faces Frances Gilles Simon. The 30-year-old Nadal is still in the mens doubles with Marc Lopez and will for the first time in his career play mixed starting Wednesday. Second seed Angelique Kerber eased past Australias 2011 US Open winner Samantha Stosur 6-0, 7-5. She next faces British 10th seed Johanna Konta who downed Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. American seventh seed Madison Keys enjoyed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over gritty Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro and will meet promising Russian Daria Kasatkina for a place in the last four. Two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova needed three sets to beat Russias Ekaterina Makarova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Late double strike keeps New Zealand on course

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AFP) - New Zealands seamers struck three vital blows on the fourth evening to keep the tourists on track for victory in the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday. After Neil Wagner had removed Chamu Chibhabha 40 minutes before the close of play, Trent Boult and Tim Southee grabbed two wickets in the final three balls of the day to send Zimbabwe to stumps on 58 for three in pursuit of an improbable 387 for victory. After bowling Zimbabwe out for 362 in their first innings to a earn a 220-run lead, New Zealand opted against enforcing the follow-on and instead spent the afternoon building a formidable target. With Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor putting on an unbroken stand of 140 in the space of 30 overs, Williamson was able to declare on 166 for two and allow his bowlers 26 overs at the Zimbabwean batsmen during the evening session.Although openers Chibhabha and Tino Mawoyo made a promising start in reaching 45 without loss, three dismissals before the close left Zimbabwe facing a long final day to avoid defeat. We are pretty confident that we can bat for the day, Zimbabwes batting coach Lance Klusener said. Theyve been in the field for a long time. From a team growth point of view, I am looking forward to it.The hosts will draw strength from the performance of Craig Ervine in the first innings, when his 146 allowed them to put up their sternest resistance of the series.Having gone to his maiden Test hundred and reached 115 on day three, Ervine extended his knock on the fourth morning before finally holing out at the end of Zimbabwes innings.Craig was really organised. He had a good plan and he knew what he wanted to do, said Klusener.Thats where we need to get to with the other batsmen. Its one thing having a plan, but its important to be comfortable with the plan. It was nice to see the reward that he got from a lot of hard work.Having decided to bat again, Williamson went on to notch up another milestone as his unbeaten 68 made him just the fourth player to score fifty or more in his first three Test innings as captain.West Indian Rohan Kanhai, South African Kepler Wessels and Indias Virat Kohli were the other three.Meanwhile Taylor continued his remarkable series with the bat, making 67 not out to take his series tally to 364 runs without being dismissed.New Zealand declared shortly after tea to begin their push for victory, and will go into the final day confident of clinching a 2-0 series victory. We know it is a very slow and unresponsive pitch, so it will be nice to come back here and only have to grab seven more wickets, said Boult. There are a couple of deliveries going over the top and a few staying quite low. Hopefully it deteriorates a little more on day five.

India's Ashwin and Saha dig in to halt Windies

Posted:

GROS-ISLET (AFP) - Dour defiance from Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha through a long final session inched India towards a measure of respectability at 234 for five when stumps were drawn on the opening day of the third Test at the Darren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia on Tuesday.Their unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership of 108 occupied almost 41 overs and rescued the tourists from the considerable discomfort of 126 for five just before tea with West Indies second Test hero Roston Chase and debutant fast bowler Alzarri Joseph taking two wickets each to vindicate their captains decision to bowl first on winning the toss. Both Ashwin and Saha had their moments of good fortune after tea, the off-spinning all-rounder being caught off a Shannon Gabriel no-ball while the wicketkeeper-batsman was missed off Chase at short-leg.They will resume on the second morning with Ashwin on 75, in pursuit of his second century of the series, and Saha on 46.West Indies grew increasingly frustrated as the partnership extended deep into final session with the taking of the second new ball backfiring on them as 46 runs were taken off nine overs before the close.Joseph, the star performer for the West Indies Under-19s in their World Cup triumph in Bangladesh last February, proved to be a sensible inclusion as he and Shannon Gabriel exploited the helpful bowling conditions in the first hour of the match.Gabriel made the first breakthrough and Joseph celebrated his first Test match with the prized wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli. Opening batsman Lokesh Rahul counter-attacked with an even 50 before falling to Chases off-spin just before lunch to break a 58-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane.Challenged by the extra pace and bounce, Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan struggled to cope with the early hostility of the fast bowlers. Dhawan gloved a lifting delivery from Gabriel to be caught down the leg-side by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and then Joseph made the vital breakthrough in just his third over in Test cricket, steepling bounce proving too difficult for Kohli to negotiate as he fended a catch to Darren Bravo at first slip.Rahul and Rahane opted to play positively in seeking to steady the Indian innings and their tactics proved successful as the runs flowed at better than four runs per over. However it was Chase who separated the third-wicket pair. Having just reached the half-century mark with six fours off 65 balls, Rahul attempted to turn a delivery to the leg-side where Kraigg Brathwaite dived forward from short fine-leg to come up with the catch.Joseph snared his second wicket early into the afternoon session when Rohit Sharma edged a full-lnegth delivery through to the wicketkeeper. Ashwin then joined Rahane in a partnership defined by stoic defence with only 43 runs coming in the two hours of the afternoon session. However Rahane fell five minutes the tea, missing a Chase full toss to depart for 35 and ushering in Saha to continue in similar vein, although for much longer, with the determined Ashwin.Leading 1-0 and needing to win the series 3-0 to displace Australia at the top of the international rankings, India dropped Cheteshwar Pujara to give Sharma his first match of the campaign and also omitted leg-spinner Amit Mishra and fast bowler Umesh Yadav in preference for left-arm orthodox slow bowler Ravindra Jadeja and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.Apart from introducing Joseph to Test cricket, the West Indies drafted in Leon Johnson at the top of the order for his first match in 19 months in place of the out-of-form Rajendra Chandrika.

Olympics: Muguruza crashes as Murray, Nadal breeze in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Garbine Muguruzas post-French Open slump continued Tuesday when she crashed out of the Olympics while Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal made the third round, happy to avoid Novak Djokovics fate.Third seed Muguruza slipped to a worrying 6-1, 6-1 loss to Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, the world number 34.Puig, 22, closed in on what would be only Puerto Ricos ninth Olympic medal. The world number 34 will face Germanys Laura Siegemund for a semi-final spot.Muguruza refused to admit that she has found it tough to adjust to being a Grand Slam champion for the first time. Her results since the French Open in June tell a different story. Before arrving in Rio, she lost in the first round at Mallorca and Montreal and made just the second round at Wimbledon.I didnt find a way to beat her but I am over it. I have to go on the court for doubles. I hope to keep going in that and the mixed (with Nadal) so I am not left with this bad taste, said the Spaniard.Puig has had a breakout season, starting the year at 92 and now standing on the cusp of the top 30.I still have goosebumps, said Puig who collapsed to the ground in celebration after sealing victory. You keep it all bottled up. Its like a Coca-Cola bottle. If you shake it and shake it and shake it, its going to explode. So I tried not to let it explode until the right moment.Murray raced into the last 16, blitzing Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 6-1.Nadal was equally ruthless, claiming a seventh win in eight clashes against Italys Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3.Both men insisted they were happy not to have joined world number one Djokovic at the Rio exit door after the top seed was toppled by Juan Martin del Potro.Del Potro is a great player when hes fit, but he hasnt been fit very often in the last few years, said Murray, bidding to become the first man to win two Olympic singles gold medals.Juan Martin was playing really well. It was tough on Novak.Murray will face Frances Benoit Paire, the 16th seed, or newly-wed Fabio Fognini of Italy for a quarter-final spot. Nadal faces Frances Gilles Simon. When the best player in the world loses, its always a surprise, said Nadal as he reflected on Djokovics exit. His success is diffcult to repeat. Its normal to lose some matches but he had a very negative draw against Juan Martin. The 30-year-old Nadal is still in the mens doubles with Marc Lopez and will for the first time in his career play mixed starting Wednesday.American seventh seed Madison Keys hailed Serena Williams for inspiring her to reach the quarter-finals.Keys, 21, was the first woman into the last eight thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over gritty Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro. But she gave credit to 22-time Slam winner Williams, the top seed in Rio and defending Olympic champion.Hey, Im happy to be on the same team as Serena Williams, its thanks to her that I was able to get my ranking up and qualify, said Keys.Keys will face promising Russian Daria Kasatkina for a place in the last four.Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova needed three sets to beat Russias Ekaterina Makarova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.Britains Johanna Konta required more than three hours to down former French and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.Later Tuesday, Williams will continue her assault on a fifth career gold when she faces Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. The 34-year-old American has won all four meetings against Svitolina, including at this years French Open where she gave up just two games.Second seed Angelique Kerber faces Australias 2011 US Open winner Samantha Stosur.

Olympics: China wins 10m synchro dive, Chen ties medal mark

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia won the womens 10m synchronised Olympic diving competition Tuesday, taking the impressive Chinese squad to three-for-three in their bid to sweep all eight gold-medals. The victory was a record fifth career Olympic gold medal for Chen, tying the mark set just two days earlier by team-mate Wu Minxia. The Chinese triumphed despite a spirited challenge from Malaysias Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong, who took silver.Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion of Canada, the bronze medallists in London, matched that finish in Rio.The Chinese took a slim early lead and managed to hold on, finishing at 354.00 points, just 9.44 points clear of the Malaysians. The victory by the reigning world champions extended what has so far been a dominating performance by the Chinese in Rio.No team has yet swept all eight medal events in the diving well since the number of Olympic events was doubled at Sydney 2000 with the addition of 10m and 3m synchronised diving.China has come close though, falling just one gold shy as hosts in 2008, and winning six of them in London four years ago.It was a three-peat gold in the event for Chen, 23, who won with different partners in Beijing and London. She also won the individual 10m platform in both of those Games but is not entered for Rio.
