Olympics: 'Lightning' strikes thrice as Bolt completes 100m hat-trick

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Usain Bolt roared into Olympic history here Sunday, capturing an unprecedented third consecutive 100m crown to confirm his place in the pantheon of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen. The 29-year-old Jamaican legend, competing in his final Olympics, powered over the line in 9.81sec, vanquishing drug-tainted American rival Justin Gatlin who took silver with Andre De Grasse of Canada claiming bronze.Gatlin, who had been booed by the Rio crowd as he was introduced, crossed in 9.89sec with De Grasse just behind in 9.91.Bolt galloped away in celebration after a superb win, basking in the adulation of the stadium and even taking selfies with fans during his lap of honour. He then delighted the fans with his traditional lightning bolt pose as reggae blasted out of the stadium sound system. The victory left Bolt standing alone in the 120-year history of sprinting in the modern Olympic games. No other athlete -- man or woman -- has ever won three consecutive individual Olympic sprint titles. It also leaves Bolt on track to complete an incredible triple-triple of clinching 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay titles for a third consecutive Olympics. Bolt, the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion, had already earned the right to be regarded as the greatest sprinter in the history of athletics after accumulating more golds on the track than anyone else. But the Jamaicans latest triumph erases any last lingering doubts that he deserves to be ranked alongside the likes of Muhammad Ali, Pele and Michael Jordan as the kind of once-in-a-generation athlete who transcend their sports. Bolts win -- his 18th gold in Olympic and World Championships since 2008 -- averted what might have been a public relations disaster for the drug-tarnished world of track and field. A corruption scandal involving the sports former rulers, who were accused of accepting bribes to cover up positive drug tests, and an investigation which alleged an elaborate state-sponsored doping system in Russia have plunged track and field into the worst crisis in its history. A gold medal for Gatlin on Sunday would have made uncomfortable viewing for many -- world athletics chief Sebastian Coe among them -- who have advocated that serial doping offenders should be banned for life. But those fears were swept away by the smiling, laughing figure of Bolt, for so long the sports most charismatic showman.Gatlin, who has served two drug bans during his long career, made a powerful start to lead over the first 50 metres. But as soon as Bolts head came around the midpoint the American was in trouble and the defending champion surged home around a metre clear of the field.

Cook laments familiar failings after Pakistan defeat

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook said his side had still to conquer some longstanding problems after Pakistan had derailed their quest to become the worlds number one Test side.Pakistans emphatic 10-wicket win in the fourth Test at The Oval, a victory achieved with more than a day to spare, saw the tourists deservedly end the four-match series all square at 2-2.In the process they ended Englands immediate hopes of returning to the top of the world rankings for the first time since 2012 and prevented Cooks side from holding bilateral series trophies against all the other nine Test-playing nations.Opening batsman Cook and number three Joe Root continued to rack up the runs, but the rest of Englands specialist batsmen struggled against Pakistan.Cook and Root scored a combined 935 at an average of 66.78 over the four Tests, whereas the equivalent tally for the other members of the top five -- Alex Hales, James Vince and Gary Ballance -- was 498 runs at 22.63.Consistently, we havent scored enough runs at the top of the order, Cook said. Its great weve got strength in depth. But the majority of the time they should be putting the icing on the cake, not making the cake.It is frustrating. Its a big area weve got to keep working on -- and obviously, for us to take that next step, top-order first-innings runs are vital.Ever since former captain Andrew Strauss retired four years ago, England have struggled to find a reliable partner at the top of the order for Cook, with Nottinghamshires Hales the latest batsman to be given a chance to make the position his own.Its not easy, Cook said. Until you get that score, it is a very hard place to be. But there is a hell of a lot of talent in the guys who are playing.Spin remains an issue too, with Moeen Alis position as the lone specialist slow bowler in a five-man attack again under scrutiny. The off-spinners11 wickets in the Pakistan series came at an expensive average of 46.54 apiece and denied Cook the control he wanted in the field. With the spin, Mo has done a fantastic job for us since he came into the side as a batter who bowled a bit -- and hes had to share a lot of responsibility to do that as part of a five-man attack.Hes not a Yasir Shah, and probably never will be, added Cook in a reference to the Pakistan leg-spinner, who took 10 wickets in the tourists first Test win at Lords and five for 71 in Englands second innings across London at The Oval. But he continues to work incredibly hard at it - and he picks up vital wickets. Its an area of the game which well look at.Englands fallible close catching was another worry for Cook. We cant afford to drop as many catches as we have in this series if we want to bowl sides out on good wickets like this one here, he said. But Cook said the teams problems at The Oval were a fair reflection of their overall standing as a side who now remain fourth in the world rankings. At the beginning of this game it was you can become number one, could do all this, he said.Probably these four days (show) exactly where we are.A bad Test for Hales was made worse when he was fined 15 percent of his match fee for confronting third umpire Joel Wilson following his controversial first-innings dismissal off a low catch.Nottinghamshire and England team-mate Stuart Broad received a 20 percent fine for his Twitter comments on the topic. Its not ideal, he said of Haless conduct. In the heat of the moment... Im sure he wont do that again.

South Africa's Wayde Van Niekerk smashes 400m world record

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 15, 2016 (AFP) - South African Wayde Van Niekerk smashed Michael Johnsons long-standing 400m record when he stormed to Olympic gold on Sunday.Van Niekerk, running in the unfavoured lane eight, blasted off the final corner to time 43.03sec, 0.15sec quicker than Johnsons previous world best set in Seville in 1999.Defending champion Kirani James of Grenada took silver in 43.76sec, with American Lashawn Merritt bronze (43.85).Despite Van Niekerk being world champion, his underwhelming heat runs had meant all eyes were on James and Merritt. The Grenadian set off fast in lane five, Merritt on his coat-tails on the inside with Van Niekerk running solo out wide. The trio had produced one of the races of the year in the 400m final at the 2015 world championships in Beijing, all going under 44 seconds as the South African won the fastest one-lap race of all time. And it was the same again in Rio, Van Niekerk exploding around the last bend and holding his form through the line in an exceptional run.I have never seen anything like that, Johnson told BBC, for whom he works as an analyst. It is amazing. That was a massacre by Van Niekerk. This young man has done something truly special. He could go under 43 seconds -- I tried and failed.Being out in lane eight helped him, he was away from James and Merritt. He was running a time-trial.That was some style he broke it in, Johnson said of Van Niekerk, who made sprint history by becoming the first athlete to dip under benchmark times in the 100, 200 and 400m.Having already clocked 19.94 seconds and 43.48sec in the 200 and 400m, Van Niekerk timed 9.98sec in the 100m in March to set an athletics first.

Basketball: Australia beats Venezuela to avoid USA in next stage

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 15, 2016 (AFP) - Australia downed Venezuela 81-56 on Sunday in Rio Games basketball to finish 4-1 in group play and avoid Team USA in the knockout rounds. The Aussies were in command throughout the game and iced it against the cold-shooting Venezuelans in the fourth quarter thanks to a 10-0 run. That run was sparked by a pair of three-pointers from shooting guard Chris Goulding, who led all scorers with 22 points.Australia finished second to the United States in Group A, which means they will be in a different bracket from the powerful Americans in the knockout phase.Australia has played well as a unit, beating a quality French side by 19.They also routed hapless China, beat Serbia and lost by 10 points to the USA in a game that was closer than the final score indicated.Their quarter-final opponent will not be decided until Monday, when Group B wraps up.The USA beat France 100-97 earlier Sunday to finish atop Group A at 5-0.The Americans have not lost a game in the Olympics since Athens 2004, or internationally for a decade, and the current crop of all-stars is heavily favoured to win a third straight gold in Rio.

Sarah Robles first Olympics medal for US in 16 years

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 15, 2016 (AFP) - Sarah Robles, who spent a two-year doping ban working odd jobs in American department stores including Macys, won the United States first Olympic weightlifting medal in 16 years on Sunday.Robles claimed bronze in the womens 75kg, behind Chinese gold medallist Meng Suping, just over a year after returning to competitive action following her suspension for taking anabolic steroids. The 28-year-old lifted a combined total of 286kg to become the first American since the Sydney 2000 Games to step on the weightlifting podium as North Koreas Kim Kuk-Hyang took silver.Robles faced opposition from other American weightlifters who have opposed her inclusion in US weightlifting teams since she returned from her ban in August 2015.Theres been opposition here and there. I knew going into the squad that I was going to have to be like teflon, she told reporters afterwards.Sometimes you read negative comments about yourself that arent nice but I know what Im about and I know work hard and I know that Im a good an honest person.I knew that as soon as I was eligible to compete again I would have to hit the ground running, Robles added.Asked what she did during her ban she answered: I got a job like a grown up.I was basically training and working three jobs. I worked as a receiving person at Home Depot, I worked as a sign changer at Macys, I was a receptionist at a veterinary hospital.I was doing a lot of little things all over the place, explained Robles, who now receives funding and trains full-time as a weightlifter.Robles snatched 126 and lifted 160 in the clean and jerk. Tara Nott and Cheryl Haworth won Americas last Olympic weightlifting medals.Im so glad to be included in this select few, said Robles.Meng, who only got called up to the Chinese team at the last minute, lifted a combined total of 307kg, to finish just 1kg ahead of North Korean Kim.The 27-year-old Mengs first-place finish was Chinas fifth weightlifting gold medal of Rio 2016 and they are set to top the medals table for the fifth year running.I did my duty for my country and for my team, said Meng. She lifted 130kg in the snatch and 177kg with her final clean and jerk to push a devastated Kim into second place.I was sad that I couldnt make gold said, said a tearful Kim who refused to answer more than one question. The North Korean served a doping ban from November 2012 to November 2014.

The pullout came less than 24 hours after her Rio success. On Saturday, bronze medalist Petra Kvitova withdrew with an injury. The BBC reported that Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal were to share a private jet Sunday night from Rio after Murrays Olympic final, indicating that both men will soldier on to Cincinnati despite heavy Olympic exertions in multiple events.Murray owns two titles at the US midwest venue from 2008 and 2011; Nadal won it in 2013.Sunday rain made a hash of qualifying rounds, with one of two mens ATP first-round matches cancelled as play was interrupted in the afternoon by weather.Alexandr Dolgopolov, who reached the semi-final a year ago from a qualifying start, was to have faced South African Kevin Anderson in a match wiped out for the day.Officials were hoping that they could start the ATP competition later with Croatian Borna Coric facing Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Andy Murray wins second gold medal in a row

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 15, 2016 (AFP) - Andy Murray became the first player to win two Olympic tennis singles gold medals Sunday when he defeated Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in an epic final.Murray added the Rio title to his 2012 triumph and to his Grand Slam collection of the 2012 US Open and 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon crowns. It also stretched the 29-year-olds current winning streak to 18.The final will go down as one of the best in the Olympics, lasting over four hours and ending with both men embracing at the net.Murray ended with 10 aces and 46 crunching winners while del Potro smashed 39 winners but was undone by 57 unforced errors.Del Potro, a bronze medallist in London four years ago, was inconsolable at the end, weeping as he sat courtside.Murray took a 5-2 career advantage over 2012 bronze medallist del Potro into the final and he was quickly in the ascendancy, breaking for a 2-0 lead.Del Potro, who was pushed to the brink of retirement last year after undergoing three wrist surgeries, was slow out of the blocks. That was hardly a surprise for a player who had defeated two of the top three seeds to make the final -- Novak Djokovic in the first round and then winning a three-hour epic to beat Rafael Nadal in Saturdays semi-finals.But he soon found his range, breaking in the third game before handing the advantage straight back, allowing Murray to stretch out to a 4-1 lead.Backed by vociferous Argentine support, all proudly sporting the sky blue and white shirts of their national football team, the 1.98m (6ft 6ins) giant clawed his back in the seventh game. But Murray was the more assertive in the closing stages, claiming the opener in the 12th game on a second set point with a pinpoint, down-the-line backhand after 74 minutes on court.Murray saved a break point in the first game of the second set with a sweet drop shot which del Potro was unable to reach despite a desperate scramble from the back of the court. The 2009 US Open champion slumped, head down on the net for a few moments to catch his breath. It did the trick as he soon unleashed a monster backhand to secure the break at the second opportunity. The final was all level in the 10th game as del Potro converted on a fourth set point, shrugging off a time violation from umpire Pascal Maria. The big Argentine was looking increasingly weary and he lost serve in the sixth game of the third set, allowing the British world number three to move ahead again, sealing the set with a cross-court forehand.Del Potro fought valiantly on, breaking for 2-1 in the fourth set, courtesy of a close combat exchange at the net but lacking the stamina to back it up and Murray was soon on level terms at 2-2.In a dramatic passage of play, the South American was another break to the good but faltered when he served for the set in the 10th game.Murray saved two break points for a 6-5 lead.In the dramatic conclusion, two Argentine fans were escorted out of the arena before Murray took victory on a second match point when del Potro netted a backhand.

Olympics: Mixed fortunes as Venus misses record fifth gold

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Venus Williams missed out on becoming the first tennis player to win five Olympic gold medals when she and partner Rajeev Ram were defeated in the Rio mixed doubles final on Sunday.Fellow Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock downed Williams and Ram 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 10-7 to grab the gold.Venus won singles gold at Sydney in 2000 and doubles titles with sister Serena in 2000, 2008 and 2012. She and 32-year-old Ram had never played together before Rio.You always go into a match trying to win it and you never know if you are going to be able to cross that line, said 36-year-old Venus who had to be content with a record-equalling fifth medal in total. So I really feel just excited that we played really well the whole tournament. Im excited that we had chances and put ourselves in a position to win that match and you cant ask for more. The silver medal made up for a disappointing Games for the Williams sisters. They lost in the first round of the doubles while Venus was also dumped out in the singles at the first hurdle.Defending singles champion Serena was defeated in the third round.Ram was a late call-up to the US squad after 2012 mens doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan pulled out for health reasons.Earlier Sunday, Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic needed just 71 minutes to claim bronze, defeating Indias Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna 6-1, 7-5.

Olympics: Britain's Rose wins first golf gold in 112 years

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Britains Justin Rose outdueled Swedens Henrik Stenson in a tension-packed final-round thriller Sunday to win the first Olympic golf gold medal in 112 years at the Rio Games mens tournament.Rose pitched the ball 18 inches from the cup on the par-5 18th hole and sank the birdie putt to win gold, completing a four-under par 67 final round to finish 72 holes on 16-under 268.Oh my God. That felt better than anything Ive ever won. It was the best tournament Ive ever done, Rose said.Coming up with that last pitch when I needed it was magical.Stenson closed with a bogey to take the silver on 270, one stroke ahead of US bronze medalist Matt Kuchar. It was always going to be tough and it came down to the last shots. Justin was the better player today, Stenson said.He started one ahead and it came down to the last shots. I didnt play my best.An event dimmed by the decisions of more than 20 players to stay away, including world number one Jason Day of Australia and the entire world top four, provided plenty of excitement and spectacular shotmaking as the gold hung on a knifes edge all day.It felt like a cross between a golf tournament and a carnival, Rose said. It was unique, incredible.Just a month after fifth-ranked Stenson won his first major title at last months British Open in a final-day battle with American Phil Mickelson, he found himself locked in a similar fight with 12th-ranked Rose, the 2013 US Open champion. At the par-5 18th, Stenson was shy of the green with his approach while Rose was left of the green with bunkers between, the gold fight down to a pitch and putt contest.Stensons ball hit the green and spun well back from the cup. Rose followed and pitched the ball 18 inches from the hole. Stenson ran his 22-foot birdie attempt eight feet past the hole, then missed his comeback putt for par and settled for bogey and a round of 68.Seconds later, Rose tapped in for the victory, raising his right fist into the air and then using it to tap the Team GB logo on his shirt over his heart.Kuchar emerged from a host of contenders to take the last podium spot by firing a 63, matching the Olympic record set in round one by Australian Marcus Fraser. The stroke-play last round felt more like a match-play showdown just as it was in 1904 when Canadian George Lyon took the prior Olympic crown.A bogey by Rose at 13 dropped him one stroke behind Stenson, the 36-year-old Englishman finding a bunker with his approach and missing a six-foot par putt.Rose found a greenside bunker at the par-3 14th and blasted out to 14 feet while Stenson made a poor pitch from off the green and missed a 20-foot par putt. When Rose sank his tense par putt, they were deadlocked again at 14 under.Rose dropped his approach six feet from the cup at 15 and made the birdie putt to reclaim a one-shot lead, then barely missed a 30-foot birdie effort at 16, only to have Stenson calmly sink a four-foot birdie putt to pull level at 15 under. Both parred 17 to set up the last-hole decider.Kuchar, ranked 20th, birdied four of the last five holes on the front nine and began the back side with a 13-foot eagle putt to reach 11 under.A 12-foot birdie putt at 15 closed Kuchars grasp around a bronze medal and a tap-in birdie at the par-3 17th left him only a shot from silver by the end.

Olympics: Third gold for Biles as Whitlock outshines Uchimura

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - US gymnastics dynamo Simone Biles remained on course for a record haul of five womens titles in Rio on Sunday but Britains Max Whitlock outshone Japans Kohei Uchimura with his double gold.Biles became the first American woman to win the Olympic vault title and the first to win three gold at the same Games after her team and all-around successes. The 19-year-old Texan can claim two more on the beam and floor, which would see her become the most titled woman in Olympic gymnastics history. But she had to share the limelight in the Rio Olympic Arena as Whitlock outshone Uchimura, who had been looking to add to his team and all-around gold, but finished fifth on the floor.Whitlocks floor gold was a first for Britain in Olympic gymnastics. But he came back an hour later to add a second in the pommel horse. Its just an incredible feeling, said the 23-year-old, who had been favourite in the pommel horse as the reigning world champion.I couldnt really take it in on floor. I had my job to do on pommel horse. I had to get back to the training gym and refocus.King Kohei was clearly off form as he hopped off the mat early in his routine.A dejected Uchimura left his chair to watch as Whitlock stole the show, and was told to return to his place by an official.Uchimura succeeded in his bid to win the team gold with Japan and defended his all-around title. He leaves Rio on a low point but with his eyes focussed on Tokyo 2020.There were wild celebrations as Brazilian duo Diego Hypolito and Arthur Mariano won silver and bronze on the floor. For me this is a gold, said an emotional Hypolito, a two-time world champion who fell in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.Winning a medal today was the most important thing in my life, the 30-year-old added.Two-time world floor champion Kenzo Shirai of Japan dropped to fourth after an error-strewn performance. This felt very different to when I was doing the team event, said Shirai. Then I felt that we were pushing each others backs, propelling each other along. This one I felt like I was very much alone.Whitlock led a British 1-2 on pommel horse ahead of Louis Smith with Alexander Naddour giving the US men their first Games medal with bronze. It was Whitlocks fifth Olympic medal and third in Rio after also winning bronze in the team event. Propelled by her lightening fast run Biles led the way on both her vaults including the difficult Amanar despite a slight hop back on the landing. She scored a combined 15.966 -- 15.900 and 16.033 -- to take gold ahead of world champion Maria Paseka of Russia (15.253).Its something I wanted so badly, so I just tried to keep a good mind going into vault, said Biles, who has three world medals but never gold on the apparatus. It means a lot to me. The only apparatus final that Biles has failed to qualify for was uneven bars where Russias Aliya successfully reigning supreme defending her title ahead of American world champion Madison Kocian. Now I can say that uneven bars are my best apparatus, said Mustafina, after taking her seventh Olympic medal and second in gold.It was the first gymnastics gold in Rio for Russia who were only cleared to compete the day before the Olympics got underway amid the fallout of accusations of state-run doping against their country.

Olympics: Kenya's Sumgong wins women's marathon

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Jemima Sumgong made the most of a kick with 6km to run to win Kenyas first ever Olympic womens marathon gold on Sunday.Sumgong, winner of this years London marathon, timed 2hr 24min 04sec for Kenyas first-ever womens marathon gold over the 42km-long course that finished at Rios Sambodromo with temperatures hitting 28 degrees Celsius. It was very hot but everybody had to get through the heat. I had to control my body and listen to my body very carefully, said Sumgong.I had prepared that I would move out at kilometre 35 and my body was responding very well, as well as my movement. I am very grateful. This is the first gold medal for Kenya (at Rio 2016).Just before the finish, a group of protesters carrying banners climbed over barriers and ran onto the course before being intercepted by police on motorbikes.Bahrain claimed only their second medal in any sport when Kenyan-born Eunice Kirwa took silver, 9sec adrift of Sumgong, while defending world champion Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia claimed bronze, at 26sec.Sumgong admitted, however, that she knew victory was hers with 2km to run, saying it made up for her disappointing showing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.I was in Beijing but I was pretty disappointed that I wasnt able to win a medal or make it on the podium, but I knew one time, one day, Id be somewhere, she said.I was never worried that Id lose this. At the 40km I knew the gold was mine. At 35km I noticed that my other two teammates had dropped off and that gave me the motivation to carry on.At 40km I saw there were three of us but I knew whatever happened I couldnt lose the gold and then I knew I was on the way to history.Dibaba, in her first race since finishing sixth at the London Marathon, had led a lead pack of seven runners through the 35km mark in 2:00.31. But then with 6km to go, Kirwa surged, only Dibaba and Sumgang managing the pace.Ethiopian Tirfi Tsegaye, who timed a world-leading 2:19:41 to win the Dubai Marathon at the start of the year and then finished second at the Boston Marathon, and Belarus Volha Mazuronak became the new chase pack as Bahrains Kenyan-born Rose Chelimo and American Shalane Flanagan were dropped.Clocking 16:31 as their fastest 5km segment of the race, between 35km and 40km, the leaders approach to the turning course in the final run-in to the Sambodromo put paid to Dibabas efforts, the Ethiopian falling behind Sumgong and Kirwa.Sumgong then turned the screw on former compatriot Kirwa down the home stretch to claim a historic gold for Kenyas women marathon runners. For a large part of the race, there was a lead pack of 15.Hitting the halfway mark in 1:12:56, it still consisted of 13, including the North Korean Kim twins, Hye-Song in the pink shoes, Hye-Gyong in the blue, who went on to finish 10th and 11th respectively.Mazuronak, wearing a tight bandana, surged briefly before she was reeled in, but American Amy Cragg and Kenyas Helah Kiprop fell off the pace as the field began to split with the lead pack at seven. Then came Kirwas burst before Sumgong showed all her experience to power past the Bahraini for gold.

Olympics: Boxer fulfils dream for first Uzbek Rio gold

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - A diminutive boxer who as a little boy dreamed of emulating his hero did just that when he won Uzbekistans first gold medal at the Rio Olympics on Sunday.Light-flyweight Hasanboy Dusmatov stands only 1.56 metres tall (just over five feet) but he became an Uzbekistan boxing titan by winning only the countrys second Olympic boxing title.Dusmatov, 23, out-foxed on unanimous points Colombias Yurberjen Martinez, for whom this was also a historic moment -- his countrys first boxing silver ever.Bronze medals went to Cubas Joahnys Argilagos of Cuba -- the reigning world champion beaten by Martinez in the semi-finals -- and the American Nico Hernandez. But it was all about Dusmatov, who paraded around the 9,000-seat arena afterwards on the back of one of his trainers, a flag of Uzbekistan slung around his shoulders, after the judges deservedly made him the winner in a cagey contest. This was an immensely proud moment for Uzbekistan, he said, and dedicated the medal to President Islam Karimov.Dusmatovs gold adds to the three bronze in Rio for Uzbekistan.I am very happy to be the first from Uzbekistan to get a gold medal for the country in Rio, said Dusmatov, whose previous best appearance was the Asian Championships title in 2015.I will be back for the Olympics in Tokyo in four years, added Dusmatov, who said he had always wanted to copy Mahammatkodir Abdullaevs gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.When I was a kid I saw Abdullaev getting the gold medal and at the time it was my dream to repeat that and get another one for the country, he said.Wearing blue, Dusmatov was slightly the busier boxer in the first round, trying to get inside Martinez at every opportunity. The Colombian -- roared on by the Brazilians in the crowd and a strong contingent from his home country -- looked a little stiff as the two men probed one another without really ever letting fly.Martinez, 24, was more aggressive in the even second round, but it was Dusmatov who was landing the telling shots on the counterattack. The referee twice had to warn Dusmatov to keep his punches above the belt, but he had the momentum and was dictating the tempo. And in the third round Dusmatov was light on his feet to avoid any trouble, with Martinez appearing to acknowledge that he needed a big round. He never got it or got to grips with his foe.The American Hernandez, who surprised in claiming the first Games boxing medal for the US men since Beijing 2008, said he took satisfaction in knowing he had lost out to the eventual Olympic champion. The United States were under pressure to deliver after the flop of London four years ago.Its a great feeling to bring a medal back home, he said, adding that the failure of 2012 made us want to work harder and turn a negative into a positive. And now here I am taking a medal home to the USA.

Violent protests erupt in Milwaukee after police kill armed suspect

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Protesters in a poor, predominantly black neighbourhood of the US midwestern city of Milwaukee fired gunshots, hurled bricks and set a gas station on fire on Saturday night after a patrol officer shot dead an armed suspect there, authorities said.Police did not disclose the race of the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting, which occurred on Saturday afternoon in Sherman Park. The violence comes as anger over police killings of black men and women in the United States remains unabated.A statement by the Milwaukee Police Department did not name the suspect but said he was 23 years old, had a lengthy arrest record and was carrying a stolen handgun loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition when police pulled over the vehicle for unspecified suspicious activity. The statement did not say whether he fired any shots or pointed the weapon at officers. A second suspect who fled from the vehicle was quickly taken into custody. The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, police said.Police said that after the shooting, some residents of Sherman Park came out onto the streets and that by evening, initially peaceful gatherings had turned violent. The crowd fired gunshots, smashed the windows of at least two squad cars and set another one ablaze, police said. One officer was hit in the head with a brick.Fires broke out at gas station, an auto parts store and at least three other businesses, officials and local media reported. This is a warning cry, Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey said. Black people of Milwaukee are tired. They are tired of living under this oppression.Police violence against black men and women has sparked intermittent, sometimes violent protests in U.S. cities from Ferguson, Baltimore and New York in the past two years. The outrage has given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement and touched off a national debate over race and policing in the United States. In 2014, Dontre Hamilton, an unarmed black man was shot dead in a park by a Milwaukee police officer, an incident that sparked largely peaceful protests.Sherman Park was the scene of some unrelated rioting a month ago. Coalition 4 Justice, which was formed after Hamilton was killed, called on supporters to clean up city streets and hold prayer vigils.Riot is the language of the unheard, the group wrote on Twitter. As of 1 a.m. Central time (0600 GMT), police said three arrests had been made in connection with the unrest.Shortly after 2 a.m. police said they were restoring order to Sherman Park and reducing deployments, but local news footage showed a liquor store in flames just minutes before the release of the statement.By daylight, videos posted to social media by local news outlets showed resident sweeping streets and picking up debris left by the rioting. Burned out vehicles and a torched building could be seen in the background.
