Happy homecoming for New Zealand's Neil Wagner

Posted:

CENTURION, South Africa (AFP) - For the first time in his 23-Test career for New Zealand, Neil Wagner had his whole family and many of his childhood friends watching him during the first day of the second Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park on Saturday. It was a special moment for me, said the fast bowler, who grew up in nearby Pretoria.Wagner is part of what is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon, a born-and-bred South African who has moved to another country and represented it in sport. He was born in Pretoria and went to Afrikaans Boys High, the same school as South African stars AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.I was two years behind them. I went to the same primary school as Faf and we played a lot of backyard cricket together.Wagner, 30, started his first-class career for the Northerns amateur side before moving to New Zealand at the age of 21.I have loved every bit of it. I live in Dunedin today and that has played a big part of who I am and how I have developed as a cricketer, he said. But it was at Centurion that he developed his passion for cricket, which made playing there such a special moment.I had a lot of goosebumps when I walked out, he said. Its the first time in my life that I had my whole family and a lot of the friends I grew up with sitting next to the field and watching a Test match.I remember sitting on that bank and watching Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock and those guys, growing up and falling in love with this game.Walking out there today to represent the Black Caps in a Test match was an amazing feeling. I loved every moment of it.He said he stayed in touch with his old school and his friends from his younger days and looked forward to a day off after the Test to spend some time with them. His home language was Afrikaans and he still speaks the language when he is with his family. He took questions in Afrikaans at a press conference but answered in English. Its just respect for the place where I live now. Its an English-speaking country. Im a fully converted Kiwi now. When he lived in South Africa his surname was pronounced in the guttural Afrikaans way Vargnuh but since he started playing for New Zealand it has been pronounced phonetically, with the Wag as in a dog with its tail. Now he prefers that.Im in New Zealand now, everyone calls me that. Its my adopted country and Im very happy with that. My nickname is Wags. Im not too fussed about it.South Africas top four batsmen all made half-centuries as New Zealands decision to bowl first failed to pay off on the first day of the series-deciding second Test.South Africa were 283 for three at the end of a day when New Zealand were on the wrong end of no fewer than five leg before wicket decisions, while seam bowler Doug Bracewell limped off late in the day with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Airport in Turkey's southeast hit by rocket fire: report

Posted:

ISTANBUL, Aug 27, 2016 (AFP) - Kurdish militants on Saturday fired four rockets at the airport in the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir, without causing casualties, the Dogan news agency said. The rockets landed in an empty area close to a police control post at the airport, causing explosions that were heard throughout the city and shattering windows.Police were sent to the scene but there were no reports of either dead or wounded, the report said.Dogan news agency said the attack was carried out by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has fought the Turkish state for over three decades.Reports said that the road to the airport was closed and flights suspended after the rocket fire. The southeast of Turkey has been wreaked by violence since the summer of 2015 when a two-and-a-half-year PKK ceasefire collapsed.

'Best yet' Murray poised to pounce at US Open

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Andy Murray admits hes playing his best ever tennis as he looks to capitalise on the growing frailties of his rivals and capture a second US Open title.Ahead of Mondays start to the seasons final Grand Slam, the 29-year-old is the sports man of the moment.Since losing the French Open final to Novak Djokovic in June, Murray has won Queens Club, a second Wimbledon title and successfully defended his Olympic crown in Rio.His career-best 22-match win streak came to a halt at the hands of Marin Cilic in the Cincinnati final last weekend when he simply ran out of gas.But that hasnt dented his confidence that he can claim a second US Open, four years after his breakthrough in New York saw him become the first British man in 76 years to win a Grand Slam title. At 29, three-time major winner Murray admits he is taking positives from being in the twilight of his career. You have to make the most of every opportunity. Its a slightly different mentality to maybe when youre younger and you feel like you have a bit more time on your side, said Murray.Murray has played in all of the first three finals of the majors in 2016, losing to world number one Djokovic in Melbourne and Paris before defeating Milos Raonic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final. The only worry for Murray is his relatively mediocre recent record in New York -- runs to the quarter-finals in 2013 and 2014 were followed by a fourth-round exit to Kevin Anderson 12 months ago.Murray starts his campaign against fiery Lukas Rosol. The last time they met in Munich in 2015, the Scot described the Czech as the most-hated man in the sport.Murrays consistency on the tour in recent weeks is in stark contrast to the rollercoaster fortunes of Djokovic, the defending champion in New York. After he won a maiden French Open to complete the career Grand Slam, all talk was of the Serb going on to defend his Wimbledon and US Open titles and clinch a calendar Grand Slam.Thats a feat so rare that only two men have ever achieved it with Rod Laver the most recent in 1969.The expectations proved too heavy a burden when the 12-time major winner was dumped out of Wimbledon in the third round for his earliest loss at a major in seven years.Although he then won a record 30th Masters trophy in Toronto, a shock first-round defeat at the Olympics to Juan Martin del Potro and a withdrawal from Cincinnati with a wrist injury suggested all is not well with the 2011 and 2015 US Open winner.I am not 100 percent. Hopefully on Monday, when it all starts, I will be there, said Djokovic who faces big-serving Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in his opener. The wrist has not been ideal for three weeks. There are different methods of healing. One involved electricity treatment to enhance the recovery process.Outside of the top two, five-time champion Roger Federer, who has played every US Open since 2000, called time on his season after a five-set semi-final defeat to Raonic at Wimbledon. The 35-year-old aggravated a knee injury in that loss.Fellow old-stager Rafael Nadal, the 2010 and 2013 US Open champion, won gold in doubles at the Rio Olympics but lost the singles bronze medal play-off to Kei Nishikori. The Games were his first outing since an injury-enforced early withdrawal from the French Open and the punishing schedule of 13 matches in 12 days in Brazil and then Cincinnati caught up with him when he lost in the third round in the American city.Nadal tackles Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan first up.Other contenders are likely to be world number three Stan Wawrinka, a two-time semi-finalist, sixth-ranked Raonic, who has yet to get past the last 16, and world number seven Kei Nishikori, the 2014 runner-up.Cilic, the surprise 2014 champion and 2009 winner Del Potro, the runner-up at the Olympics, should also not be discounted.

Mourinho delighted with contribution of goal hero Rashford

Posted:

KINGSTON UPON HULL, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes that Marcus Rashford is proving his value to the side after the young striker scored the late goal that defeated Hull City on Saturday.Rashford hit eight goals in 18 matches for United last season, having broken into the first team in February, and went on to win a place in Englands Euro 2016 squad. However, the 18-year-old has been named as a substitute for all three of his clubs Premier League matches so far this season and had not come on at all until Saturdays game, with Mourinho preferring new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.Rashford has also dropped down to the England Under-21 squad, for whom he has been selected for a Euro 2017 qualifier against Norway on September 6.In his pre-match news conference on Friday, Mourinho was quick to state that the teenager will get chances to play across all competitions this season. The manager was full of praise of Rashford once more after he converted Wayne Rooneys cross two minutes into stoppage time to give United a 1-0 victory in torrential rain at the KCOM Stadium.Marcus Rashford has a lot of chances waiting for him, Mourinho said after the youngster came on for Juan Mata in the 71st minute to make the difference. When the team was chasing the ball against Leicester in the Community Shield and again tonight, he made a difference for us.He gives new problems to the opposition so I am really happy with him and the team. Even defensively, we controlled their counter-attack.Mourinho believed his side were excellent value for their victory, but felt that they took too long to get going.I was telling them at half-time that they were more intensive and aggressive in training on Wednesday than they were in the first half, he said. The boys were very strong and the second half was like going to fight against a wall. We had an amazing mentality. We were very strong and tried to create problems for the opposition. We tried and tried and got it.We deserved it and in a more comfortable way. It is a great feeling when you win the points in the last minute.I tell the boys every day we have to go into every match to win. We must not be happy with less than a win. We know we will draw or lose matches but the mentality has to be go to win. Today they showed that. One setback for United was a back injury to midfielder Marouane Fellaini, which makes him a doubt for Belgiums World Cup qualifier in Cyprus in September 6.Hull caretaker-manager Mike Phelan praised the efforts of his players, and called for a quick conclusion to the clubs takeover saga.Ehab Allam, one of Hulls owners, indicated in the match programme that a deal has been agreed to sell the club, without confirming the buyers, believed to be a Chinese consortium led by commercial property investors Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li.Phelans future remains uncertain, as the new owners may well want to appoint someone else as a permanent replacement for Steve Bruce, who resigned as manager in July. Its important now that some decisions are made, Phelan said. There seems to be not just one group, but two groups interested. My future will be decided after the transfer deadline. Theres a lot of effort to get this takeover over the line.Credit to my players tonight, they performed heroically. I feel for them. This United team is on a roll and there are some teams you take on and some teams you need to be careful with. We tried to get at them a bit and we just ran out of steam.Phelan added that midfielder Robert Snodgrass, who went off injured early in the second half, had suffered a calf problem.

Antonio Conte wants more from Chelsea's revitalised winger Eden Hazard

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelseas revitalised winger Eden Hazard has been challenged to step up his performances even further after making an impressive start under new Blues boss Antonio Conte.Hazard, Englands Footballer of the Year in 2015, endured a difficult campaign last season when Chelsea finished 10th in the table, Jose Mourinho was sacked and the Belgian international failed to score a Premier League goal until May.However, the former Lille player appears to have rediscovered his mojo. There were glimpses of a revival at the end of last season under caretaker manager Guus Hiddink and again at Euro 2016 despite Belgiums quarter-final exit. Now, with Conte in charge and stability restored at Stamford Bridge, the 25-year-old, who captained his country in France, has started the new season in sparkling form.He scored a superb goal after only nine minutes as Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 on Saturday to make it four successive victories in all competitions and leave the Blues flying high in the Premier League table.Further goals from Willian and Victor Moses completed a hugely encouraging victory for Chelsea, but there was no doubt that Hazard was the inspiration.Eden is a fantastic player, working very well with a great attitude. After the first day, I saw this. I saw his will to work and improve and find a good shape very quickly, Conte said.I can also say that his performance can still improve. But Im pleased with his commitment and work-rate - and the same goes for all the players. The attitude is good and I like this.Hazards performance in Chelseas latest win hints at good things to come for the Blues, who are hoping to challenge for the title this season despite the huge amounts of money spent by rivals such as Manchester United and Manchester City.Conte, who came straight to Stamford Bridge after guiding Italy to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, has totally transformed that atmosphere in west London - and getting the best out of Hazard could be the key to future success.Im pleased for him, but also for Pedro as a winger too, said Conte, who brought the former Barcelona wide man on against Burnley and saw him set up the third goal a minute from time. These are players with great talent, fantastic in one versus one. When you have these players with great talent, its good for me to put them in the best condition to excite with this talent. We are working on these aspects, to put the players in the best condition to show their talent. The only frustration for Conte is that after such a quick start to his new career in England he has to face an international break as most of his players head off to play for their countries in World Cup qualifying matches. Its a pity that now there is this international break. After three wins, I wanted to continue playing games. But we have to stop, said Conte.Starting the season with three league wins and one in the cup is good for the confidence of the players, the fans, for the club, for me.Meanwhile, Burnley manager Sean Dyche knows he needs to move quickly in a very difficult transfer market to prevent his side losing heavily at places like Stamford Bridge in future. Its tough, he said. Thats the reality of where were at as a club. Its a tough market.Im hearing that from managers across the board. But well keep on trying. One player who does look on his way to Burnley is Chelsea reserve striker Patrick Bamford, who has been lined up for a season-long loan. Its looking that way. Its not done, but its looking that way, Dyche said.

Zidane says James Rodriguez will stay in Madrid

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane closed the exit door on Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez despite leaving the 2014 World Cups top scorer on the bench once more for Reals 2-1 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday.Rodriguez has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu since Zidane took charge in January with Madrids latest sensation Marco Asensio joining the likes of Isco, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric ahead of him for a place in Reals congested midfield. However, Zidane insisted Rodriguez will remain in the Spanish capital beyond the transfer deadline on Wednesday with even the Premier Leagues cash-rich clubs unlikely to match the reported 80 million euros ($90 million, 68 million) Real paid for him after the World Cup two years ago.Rodriguez only came on for the final 21 minutes as Krooss fine long-range effort 10 minutes from time salvaged all three points for the hosts despite the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema from Zidanes starting line-up through injury.I thought James played well. It is not easy to come and have to make the difference, said Zidane. He is going to stay here.Krooss strike maintained Madrids 14-match winning run in La Liga, but victory disguised a sub-standard Real display.Without Ronaldo and Benzema, Gareth Bale failed to build on his fine start to the campaign with two goals in a 3-0 win at Real Sociedad to start the season. However, Zidane highlighted the need to win even without shining, particularly with a two-week international break to come.It is true that we didnt shine. In some game we cant play as we want, said Zidane. We can improve, but I feel calm with how we have started the season. Two league games won and another official game (UEFA Super Cup) won.Now there are the international games and many players will leave, but that is something we cant change. And Zidane hailed his players belief to keep going until the end despite being far from their best.I am left with the fact the players believed until the end and we achieved what we wanted.Spanish international Lucas Vazquez started alongside Rodriguez on the bench and was introduced before his teammate in search of a winner. And Vazquez was less comprehensive than his coach when questioned whether Rodriguez had played his last game in the white shirt.I dont think it was his last game, but we have to wait and see what happens.

Serena shoulders burden of history at US Open

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Serena Williams once again arrives at Flushing Meadows poised to rewrite the tennis record books -- if her own troublesome right shoulder and increasingly emboldened rivals allow. The 34-year-old US superstar matched Steffi Grafs Open Era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles with her triumph at Wimbledon in July. With a seventh US Open triumph she can break Grafs record, and continue her march toward Australian Margaret Courts all-time mark of 24 Grand Slam titles. She could also break Grafs record of 186 consecutive weeks atop the world rankings, and surpass Chris Evert for most US Open singles titles won in the Open Era.But after seeing a frustrating year go by between her 21st Grand Slam win and No. 22, Williams said shed learned to let history take care of itself. At this point, Im taking it a day at a time, Williams said. I just am more relaxed, for sure.A straight-sets win over Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final may have eased some of the pressure Williams was feeling, but its been far from smooth sailing since. Her bid to retain her Olympic singles title ended in Rio de Janeiro when she was sent crashing out of the third round by Elina Svitolina.Williams was clearly hindered by the shoulder injury that had forced her out of the Montreal WTA tournament as she served up eight double faults and 37 unforced errors in the straight-sets defeat. She then withdrew from her WTA title defence in Cincinnati, still struggling with painful shoulder inflammation.I think usually I prefer to play more coming into the final Grand Slam of the year, Williams acknowledged. But there is nothing we can do about it. You just have to make the best of every single opportunity. Thats all I can do now.Williams faces a tricky opening encounter against experienced Russian Ekaterina Makarova. She could find fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep waiting in the quarters and elder sister Venus, the sixth seed, in the semis.Germanys Kerber, who defeated Williams in the Australian Open final in January, is just one of the players with a chance to seize the number one ranking if Williams falters.Kerber, 28, also boasts a title at Stuttgart, an Olympic silver medal and finals appearances at Brisbane in January and this month in Cincinnati -- where she missed her first chance to supplant Williams atop the rankings.Being viewed as a legitimate threat to Williams, Kerber said, is really special.Because Serena is one of the best players and athletes in the world, she said.Far from feeling stressed by the chance to topple Williams, Kerber said she is thriving on the race for number one.I love this question, I love it, Kerber said. The pressure for sure is maybe a little bit higher, but if Im not doing the pressure on myself, everything is fine.Third-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza also has a shot at the top, although the 22-year-old who stunned Williams in the French Open final will need her best US Open ever to do so.In three main-draw appearances she has won just one match. Turning around her Flushing Meadows fortunes would further her aim of establishing herself as more than the girl that beat Serena at Roland Garros.Fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland also has an outside chance at the world number one ranking if she can claim her first Grand Slam title.Notable absentees include 2015 champion Flavia Pennetta, who retired at the end of last year, Victoria Azarenka who is pregnant and former champion Maria Sharapova who is serving a doping suspension.Venus Williams, whose seven Grand Slam titles include two US Opens, is among a handful of former champions among the seeds including 2004 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and 2011 champ Samantha Stosur of Australia. There are a lot of good players right now, Kerber said. Lets see how Serena will play here. Lets see how the others will play. Its a new day, new tournament, new matches -- so lets see.

Hafeez ruled of the series, Pakistan call-up Irfan

Posted:

LONDON, Aug 27, 2016 (AFP) - Pakistans Mohammad Hafeez has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour of England, with giant paceman Mohammad Irfan being summoned into the squad as a replacement, the Pakistan Cricket Board said Saturday.Top-order batsman Hafeez was ruled out of Pakistans four-wicket defeat in the second one-day international by England at Lords on Saturday with what team management said was a left calf injury. The 35-year-old had a difficult tour, managing just 102 runs in six innings before being dropped during Pakistans 2-2 draw in a four-match Test series.Off-spinner Hafeez, currently suspended from bowling because of an illegal action and with a knee injury that threated his tour participation preventing him from undergoing a re-test, was then dismissed for 11 in Englands 44-run rain-affected win in the first ODI at Southampton on Wednesday. Now, with Pakistan 2-0 down in the five-match one-day series, 7ft 1in (2.1 metre) paceman Irfan has been called up in Hafeezs place. The 34-year-old left-armer is expected to join Pakistans squad ahead of Tuesdays third ODI at Nottinghams Trent Bridge ground in the English Midlands.Hafeez, however, will remain in England for treatment. The PCB statement said: Hafeez complained about the pain in his left calf. He had a minor strain in his left calf which ruled him out of the (rest of the) limited-overs part of the series against England. The team management has decided that there was no point in retaining him with the team, though he will be staying in England for intensive rehabilitation to regain his physical form. The team management requested the selection committee to replace Mohammad Hafeez with Mohammad Irfan and the selection committee has approved this replacement, the statement added.Irfan has taken 81 wickets in 59 ODIs at an average of 31.14, with a best of four for 30 against Zimbabwe at Brisbane during the 2015 World Cup.His last appearance at this level was against New Zealand at Auckland in January when Irfan took one for 60 in eight overs during a three-wicket defeat on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Manchester United score injury time goal to beat Hull City

Posted:

KINGSTON UPON HULL, United Kingdom (AFP) - Marcus Rashford extended Manchester Uniteds 100 percent start to the Premier League season with a dramatic strike two minutes into stoppage time to seal a 1-0 win at Hull City on Saturday.Teenage forward Rashford, left out of the starting line-up for each of Uniteds opening three matches, made his case for greater involvement as he came on as a substitute to convert Wayne Rooneys low cross from close range.Up to that point, it looked like being an evening of frustration for Jose Mourinhos team, but they leave the KCOM Stadium in second place in the table behind leaders Chelsea only on goals scored.Zlatan Ibrahimovic went close twice in the first half for United, while Rooney was denied by a brilliant first-half block from Hull captain Curtis Davies.Hull, themselves looking to maintain a perfect league record, spent most of the match on the defensive but did have threatening moments of their own.Robert Snodgrass free-kick flew just wide in the opening half, while Tom Huddlestones shot was deflected just wide off Eric Bailly inside the final 15 minutes.Indeed, David Meyler lifted a shot over the bar from a promising position just seconds before Rashford struck, leaving the home side wondering what might have been.Aside from the agonising manner of the defeat, a major concern for their caretaker manager Mike Phelan, though, will be an injury to Scotland international Snodgrass, who had to come off early in the second half.Phelan, who is hoping to sign goalkeeper David Marshall from Cardiff City, is desperately short of senior players, despite the return of defender Harry Maguire from injury.Hulls stand-in manager is continuing to have to field players out of position, with midfielder Jake Livermore once again filling in as a centre-back, and winger Sam Clucas figuring in a holding midfield role. The clubs lack of signings has been a sore point with supporters, who have called for owners Assem and Ehab Allam to leave the club.Ehab, writing in the match programme, indicated that a deal has been agreed to sell the club, with a Chinese consortium led by commercial property investors Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li believed to be taking over, having been in negotiations for several weeks.Despite chaos off the pitch, Hulls players have shown remarkable strength in adversity on it, withstanding Uniteds pressure until the final seconds in torrential rain in east Yorkshire. The visitors almost took the lead in the eighth minute, when Ibrahimovic glanced a header onto the roof of the net from Anthony Martials clever cross. They found it difficult to create clear chances after that and Hull did cause problems at the other end.Marouane Fellaini conceded a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area which Snodgrass, a regular threat from set-pieces, curled just wide.United should have gone in front eight minutes before the interval when Juan Mata raced past Andrew Robertson and crossed for Rooney six yards out, but the England captains effort was blocked by Davies, and the visitors appeals for handball went unheeded.Ibrahimovic then backheeled into the side-netting just before half-time, and Uniteds search for a goal continued with little success for much of the second period.Paul Pogba and substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan both had long-range efforts that missed the target, and the match looked set for a draw until Rashfords late intervention.

PM Nawaz's lips sealed over country's humiliation: Qadri

Posted:

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader Dr Tahirul Qadri stated on Saturday that Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s lips were sealed over the country’s humiliation, adding that the government did not have the courage to file a case against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief over his anti-Pakistan statements, reported Dunya News. While addressing to PAT’s retribution movement rally in Multan via video link, Qadri lambasted the country’s leaders and stated that the country was abused but PM Nawaz’s lips were yet sealed over the issue.Qadri stated that 14 PAT members were killed when the party challenged the system being run by corrupt leaders. He also hinted towards a decisive showdown with the government.PAT leader stated that intelligence agencies reports stated that areas in south Punjab and Faisalabad have become strongholds of terrorism, further adding that Punjab government had no other option other than carrying out an operation against such elements.

The game between Tottenham and Liverpool ends as 1-1 draw

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Left-back Danny Roses 72nd-minute equaliser earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in a hard-fought Premier League encounter at White Hart Lane on Saturday.James Milner gave Liverpool a deserved lead with a penalty shortly before half-time, but Spurs got their reward for a spell of sustained second-half pressure when Rose drilled home the equaliser. The England full-backs strike means he has already matched his tally from last season and it preserved Spurs unbeaten record following their draw at Everton and victory over Crystal Palace.Im very pleased, said Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino. It was a very competitive game. Both teams played with passion, which is very important. It was a fantastic game for the neutral. The effort and the character we showed today were fantastic. Its not easy when you play a team that are perfect on the counter-attack and you need to take risks. The draw is a fair result. It was a frustrating outcome for visiting manager Jurgen Klopp on his return to the scene of his first game at the Liverpool helm last October, which ended in a 0-0 draw. His side showed a much sharper cutting edge than in last weekends 2-0 defeat at Burnley, but their inability to close the game out enabled Spurs to rescue a point. When you take a point at Tottenham, for 99 percent of teams it would be a good thing, Klopp told the BBC.We played a very good away game against a very strong side. It was our first real mistake and it was a goal, so that is not really fair.We showed we can be good. We played football and defended really good. It doesnt feel too brilliant at the moment. It was a contest between two teams who like to press high up the pitch and in the first half it was Tottenham who had the greatest difficulty playing the ball out from the back.Deputising in goal for Spurs again in place of the injured Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm was frequently called into action. The Dutchman produced a stunning fourth-minute stop to thwart Philippe Coutinho from Roberto Firminos square pass and twice raced from his line to expertly tackle Sadio Mane.Coutinho had overcome a stiff hamstring to start and he continually found space in threatening positions, with one shot deflected over and another comfortably parried by Vorm at his near post.Aside from a Christian Eriksen free-kick that Simon Mignolet fisted away, Spurs posed little threat at the other end, although Vincent Janssen could have won a penalty after being blocked by Joel Matip.Mane, meanwhile, was fortunate to avoid a red card after clattering Rose two minutes after being booked for a late one on Dele Alli.Janssen had replaced Kyle Walker after the Spurs full-back succumbed to illness, prompting a reshuffle that saw Eric Dier move to right-back and Alli drop into central midfield. It left the hosts with an unfamiliar configuration on the right flank and Liverpool exploited their uncertainty when Firmino was clipped by Erik Lamela after darting in behind him.Milner, Liverpools left-back again, confidently steered the penalty into the bottom-left corner. The team in red continued to enjoy the upper hand in the second half, with Matip heading over, Nathaniel Clyne working Vorm and Mane seeing a volley chalked off for offside against Adam Lallana. But as the intensity of the visitors pressing began to fade, so Spurs started to assert themselves.Eriksen side-footed over from Diers cut-back and Mignolet produced smart saves to thwart Lamela and Toby Alderweireld before Spurs drew level with 18 minutes to go.Released by Alderweireld on the right, Dier cut inside onto his left foot and crossed, Lamela flicked the ball on and Rose brought it down at the back post before skewering a shot past Mignolet.Liverpool procured one last sight of goal, but Georginio Wijnaldums effort was fielded by Vorm.
