Olympics: Bolt wins third Olympic 200m title

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Usain Bolt won a third successive Olympic 200m gold on Thursday to keep alive his hopes of an unprecedented triple triple in Rio.The victory in his favoured event was Bolts 13th individual world or Olympic sprint title from a possible 14 since he took athletics by storm at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 29-year Jamaican timed 19.78 seconds for gold. Canadian Andre de Grasse took silver with 20.02sec and Frances Christophe Lemaitre winning bronze (20.12).As Guns NRoses Welcome to the Jungle blasted out, huge cheers greeted Bolt, wearing black lycra shorts and a singlet in the green, gold and black colours of Jamaica. The sell-out Olympic Stadium crowd, which has been criticised for its jeering of some athletes, were raucous in their welcome of the Jamaican star. The win means that Bolt can complete a third straight sweep of the sprint medals -- 100m, 200m and relay -- on Friday in the 4x100m contest when Jamaica start as favourites. The so-called triple triple would see him leave the Olympic stage as an undisputed great.Bolt, in his favoured lane six, had Lashawn Merritt, the American 400m specialist and sole US medal hope after Justin Gatlin failed to make the eight-man final, just inside him in Thursdays final.Immediately out of the blocks, the Jamaican was quickly up on Lemaitre, racing in seven. With the temperature around 27 degrees Celsius (84F) and the track shining after a light rain shower, Bolt delivered electrifying control around the bend, hitting the back stretch in full tilt.As the crowd roared, Bolt responded by moving into his famed drive phase, head coming slowly up as part of the process that unleashes the full power from his long legs.Eyes glued on the stadiums big screen at the end of the 100m track, Bolt blasted through the line with a glance leftwards at the giant stopwatch, beating his chest and saying number one. There had been no easing up, but Bolt looked to be left disappointed with his time, ripping the numbers off his shorts and throwing them to the floor. No, I cant grasp what Ive achieved, definitely not, said Bolt. You work so hard for years and then you just hope it pays off. It is a brilliant feeling.Bolt admitted that he hadnt felt great down the back stretch, timing what was the slowest 200m of all his individual victories.I wasnt happy with the time, he acknowledged. My body just wouldnt respond in the straight.Im getting older and my body is ageing. Personally I think this is my last 200 but my coach may beg to differ.Any disappointment was quickly forgotten on the track as Guns NRoses was switched for Bob Marleys One Love. Bolt, draped in Brazilian and Jamaican flags, did a lap of honour to chants of Usain Bolt, Usain Bolt after another amazing victory and eighth Olympic gold.

Olympics: Argentina win first men's hockey gold

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Argentina won their first Olympic mens hockey gold on Thursday with a 4-2 victory over Belgium thanks to a 10-minute goal blitz in the first half. The title also allowed the South Americans to match their best gold haul at a Games of three which was last achieved in 1948.Its like touching the sky with your hands, so I feel so happy, said Gonzalo Peillat, who scored one of the goals to take his tally for the Games to 11.We won the tournament and it was the first time in the history of Argentina. Its my dream. When I started playing hockey I always was thinking about this dream and now it came true.Belgium, also playing in their first final, had taken the lead after just three minutes through Tanguy Cosyns. But the South Americans hit back with Pedro Ibarra, Ignacio Ortiz and Peillat scoring in quick succession in the first quarter.Gauthier Boccard hit a sensational second for Belgium when he dribbled the ball past three defenders before finding the corner of the goal. But Augustin Mazzilli guaranteed the gold when he was allowed to tap into an empty net.I think maybe its going to help a lot in mens hockey in Argentina, said Mazzilli. The womens team did everything really, really good the whole time (they won four gold medals). So we need now to increase our level in hockey in mens so I hope everyone is watching this and we can play with more payers in Argentina. In an interesting twist, the Argentine squad featured the grandson of Belgian cycling legend Eddie Merckx although Luca Masso played just six minutes of the final.Belgiums New Zealander coach Shane McLeod said his team made too many errors at crucial times.I think later on well reflect a bit more and be very proud of what weve done but you always wanna win that last game and we just did too many things wrong today, he said. Its a pity. Thats sport. The result was still Belgiums best finish in mens hockey at an Olympics, with third place at the Antwerp Games in 1920 their previous best.Earlier, two-time defending champions Germany beat the Netherlands in a shootout for bronze after they finished level at 1-1 at the end of normal time. The bronze was particularly pleasing for Mats Grambusch who was playing alongside his brother Tom.To get an Olympic medal is probably one of the biggest things in the world, and getting a medal with your brother is indescribable, said Mats.

Olympics: Jamaican quartet keep Bolt's 'triple triple' quest on track

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Jamaica kept Usain Bolts quest for his triple triple gold medal haul on track Thursday by qualifying for the final of the 4x100m relay. The quartet of Jevaughn Minzie, Asafa Powell, Nickel Ashmeade and Kemar Bailey-Cole timed 37.94 seconds in finishing second behind Japan, who won in an Asian record of 37.68sec.I love this sport and I love to run and compete and run fast, said 33-year-old veteran Powell, a member of the Jamaica team that won relay golds in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 and 2015 world championships.I was lot more concerned about the start and getting the baton around. These guys are pretty excited, they wanted it so thats what gave me a bit of comfort. But there was some pressure on making it to the finals, the first time running with these two young guys, he said in reference to Minzie and Bailey-Cole.Japans anchor leg Aska Cambridge told AFP: The guys brought me the baton in a great position and I just took us home really. It felt great to be clear at the front on a stage like the Olympics. Its always been a dream to race against Bolt so well go in and try to hit as hard as we can.Bolt, rested for the qualifier, can join American Frank Wykoff (1928, 1932, 1936) as the only athlete to win three gold medals in the mens 4x100m relay.Bolt, who won the 100m on Sunday for an unprecedented third successive time, will run in the 200m final later Thursday. Should he win that, the relay would hand the Jamaican the chance to join Finlands Paavo Nurmi and American Carl Lewis on a record nine Olympic gold medals.Jamaica will face a stiff challenge from the Americans.Just minutes after watching their womens team drop the baton in their race, the pressure was on the US mens team to safely get the stick around the Olympic Stadium track. We got to be positive when things like that happen, said Tyson Gay.Youve got to keep your composure and get the stick around. With Justin Gatlin rested, Mike Rodgers, Christian Coleman, Gay and long jumper Jarrion Lawson did just that, winning in 37.65sec.The United States have recently been dogged by a raft of changeover fiascos, their failure at last years World Championships in Beijing the most recent bungled effort. The Americans have not won a major championship since the 2007 worlds in Osaka. In seven out of the last 13 world championships the US men have either been disqualified or failed to finish.Despite winning 15 of the previous 23 Olympic gold medals in the relay, the Americans have not claimed anything since 2000.USA failed to finish in 2008 and was stripped of its 2012 silver after Gays positive drugs test.

Olympics: Clement powers to 400m hurdles title

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Kerron Clement of the United States stormed to victory in the mens 400m hurdles on Thursday, holding off a furious late challenge from Kenyas Boniface Tumuti to take gold.Clement powered over in a world leading time of 47.73sec, just ahead of Tumuti in 47.78.Turkeys Cuban-born Yasmani Copello claimed bronze in 47.92sec.Irelands Thomas Barr narrowly missed out on a podium finish, just behind Copello in 47.97sec.The win comes eight years after the Trinidad-born Clement won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Games and a gold medal in the 4x400 relay.Injuries disrupted his career in the intervening period and he finished outside the medals at the London Olympics four years ago as he struggled to regain his peak. However he had signalled his readiness to take advantage of a wide open field in Rio, qualifying for the final with the fastest semi-final time on Tuesday. On Thursday Clement set off at a quick pace and built up a healthy lead heading into the home straight, digging deep to hold off the fast-approaching Tumuti over the closing metres before being congratulated by US decathlon star Ashton Eaton as he crossed the line.Clement said he had been determined to make the podium in Rio, targeting 2016 as a redemption year after his problems in 2012.I had one goal in mind and my mindset was to come here and get a medal, Clement told reporters. In 2008 I fell short and got a silver. In 2012 I was battling injuries and surgeries. I was just happy to make the finals in 2012, added Clement, who underwent hernia and adductor muscle operations before the London Games.Coming out here in 2016 for me was a redemption year. Im just honored to get a gold medal.Clement is also an outspoken anti-doping advocate, wearing a wrist bracelet which reads Test Me, Im Clean when he competes. He reiterated his call for life bans for dopers on Thursday following his win.Anyone who tests positive should be banned for life. It has no place in track and field, Clement said.My bracelet says Test me Im clean, and I hope everyone I run against is clean as well, he said.Clement has achieved a measure of fame off the track, featuring in a music video for pop diva Beyonces hit Run the World after being invited to attend the filming in Los Angeles by a dancer friend.

Olympics: US women into relay final after solo run

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - The United States 4x100m womens relay team won their solo race against the clock to book their place in the Olympic final Thursday. The American quartet of Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner and Morolake Akinosun clocked 41.77 to eliminate China from Fridays final. Before we came out our coach said it was just like a practice with the whole world watching, a relieved Gardner said after the one-off. We just had to go out there and trust each other. It was different, it was really weird, Felix added. Running without competition is just strange.I think when we walked out and people were cheering for us, it encouraged us. Were just grateful. It completed a surreal day for the reigning Olympic champions, who had earlier been left facing disqualification after a dropped baton exchange between Felix and Gardner in the morning heats. The American women were thrown a lifeline however when replays showed that Felix had been knocked off-balance by Brazilian runner Kauiza Venancio as she prepared to hand off to Gardner. The US team filed a protest and race officials duly disqualified Brazil -- but ruled that the Americans must run again, in a highly unusual solo flying lap -- to beat Chinas eighth fastest qualifying time of 42.70sec.The decision angered Chinese officials but their protest was later dismissed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).Felix meanwhile said she was still digesting a crazy day on the track.I was stunned and shocked when it happened. Ive never been involved in anything like that, Felix said, adding she had no qualms about the decision which ultimately led to Chinas relay squad being knocked out of the final.I think the process was fair, Felix said. I was impressed with the plan they came up with. It was just kind of an unfortunate situation. I wouldnt want to bump anyone out of a slot, but at the same time we were impeded. I think its not ideal.

Olympics: Lewis, critic of male no-shows, surges in golf

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - American golfer Stacy Lewis, a critic of male Olympic no-shows, announced her presence Thursday with 11 birdies to surge into contention halfway through the Rio Games womens competition.Lewis shot an 8-under-par 63 to end her second round at nine-under for the tournament -- the first womens Olympic event in 116 years. She was just a shot back of former world number one Park In-Bee, who posted a 66 for the second straight day in Rio de Janeiro to go to 10-under.Britains Charley Hull and Canadas Brooke Henderson were a further shot behind Lewis at eight-under overall.Lewis said last month it was really disappointing that the worlds top male golfers skipped the Games.Unlike the womens tournament, more than 20 mens stars including the four highest-ranked players stayed home. They cited reasons ranging from the Zika virus to scheduling issues but the no-shows fuelled questions over golfs Olympic staying power. There are a lot of reasons maybe why we shouldnt have come, whether it was Zika or other issues... but I did my homework and nobody gave me a reason I should not come, Lewis said after Thursdays round. There would have to be something seriously wrong for me to not come and play in the Olympics.Lewis struggled to a one-under 70 in the first round, but found a groove Thursday, closing with four straight birdies to take the clubhouse lead before Park ended with a three-birdie run of her own.The tournament is the first since American Margaret Abbott won a nine-hole event at the Paris Games in 1900.Mens golf returned earlier during the Rio Games, with Britains Justin Rose on Sunday winning the first mens gold in 112 years in a thrilling duel with Swedens Henrik Stenson.South Koreas Park continued to look steady despite missing time on the pro tour lately due to a nagging thumb injury, with just one bogey so far.She leads a team of four South Koreans who qualified for the Olympics -- more than any other nation and underlining the countrys dominance of the womens game. All four are in the top ten. They include Chun In-Gee, who was four strokes back of Park. Her compatriots Kim Sei-Young and Amy Yang also remained in contention.Park became the first woman to sink a hole-in-one on the par-71 Olympic course, coming in a practice round this week.Ive just got to try and stay as calm as I can and try to play like I did the last two days, Park said.Lewis, the world number seven, has suggested that the greater winnings available to male pros compared to women may have caused their top stars to undervalue playing for ones country. She added that their absences could hurt women Olympians by endangering golfs place in the Games. But Lewis insisted she started Thursdays round thinking less about that than about how angry she was with the day before, when she couldnt find a rhythm.(It was) frustrating that the golf swing wasnt there and hadnt been for a few days, she said.Sometimes when I get made I get more focussed. She carded one bogey and a double on Thursday, but also rolled in six putts of 10 feet or more including a near-30-footer on the par-four 11th hole.Anytime you see putts going in, it kind of frees up the swing a little bit more, Lewis said.

Olympics: From Cuban gun-shot victim to Rio boxing gold

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Just over two years ago Cuban light-heavyweight Julio Cesar La Cruz was shot in a botched robbery and his boxing career thrown into jeopardy. On Thursday he added Rio Olympic gold to his three amateur world titles and paid tribute to the people of Cuba and his family for nursing him back to full health.La Cruz, 27, who grabbed a slice of history in becoming the first Cuban to win Games gold at 81kg, said: I was able to recover thanks to my family and especially to my mum. Shes the main person who has always supported me and the one who gave me hope. After that I was able to start again and carry on my career. This medal is repayment for all the sacrifices I made and the support I got from everyone. The Cuban, who bamboozled Kazakhstans Adilbek Niyazymbetov to earn a deserved unanimous points decision in their gold-medal showdown, was shot in his left hip in January 2014 during an attempted robbery. He keeps the bullet in a jar as a reminder. This was a first boxing gold for Cuba in Rio -- cementing the countrys place as the second-most successful in Games boxing history, after the United States, with the prospect of two more golds to come.Niyazymbetov was outfoxed as La Cruz put on a masterclass of Cuban amateur boxing -- all fast feet, body swerves and clever feints. The 27-year-old Kazakh fell at the final hurdle for a second successive Games, after also claiming silver in London in 2012.He was unable to hide his disappointment.I cant say Im really happy because I came to win gold. I have mixed feelings -- sad and disappointed but happy at the same time, he mumbled, his eyes red from tears. When you win the silver the second time it can be emotional. I have been training for four years and preparing myself for a gold medal, and I got a silver.La Cruz was an awkward customer to lay a punch on, Niyazymbetov admitted, and the Cubans face looked barely touched after the bout. The stylish La Cruz had the crowd with him in the close-to-capacity 9,000-seat arena early on, but they were booing him by the end, feeling he did not attack enough. The Kazakh was doing the pursuing with La Cruz -- light on his feet and his long arms often dangling at his sides -- content to dip in and out with the odd flick of a jab. La Cruz was the smoother operator, Niyazymbetov the greater aggressor, but he was having trouble getting near the Cuban.A few boos started to ring out when the crowd felt the duo needed to put on more of a show, especially the Cuban. But that is not La Cruzs style and jeers turned to a few cheers when Niyazymbetov missed with two big shots -- the Cuban arching his neck back and his head away to avoid a flailing blue glove. The Kazakh instead hit the ropes and La Cruz was cruising to victory -- offering his face to be hit and then darting out of the way again, all the while lashing out a rapid-fire jab to keep his foe at bay.Britains Joshua Buatsi and Mathieu Bauderlique of France take home bronze.

Olympics: Indian wrestler Yadav out of Games with doping ban

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav is out of the Olympic Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) banned him for four years on Thursday for a doping violation.Yadav was due to compete in Fridays mens freestyle under-74kg division wrestling competition in Rio.But CAS upheld an appeal by the World Anti-doping Agency against the National Anti-doping Agency of India (NADA) which had decided to exonerate him of blame despite failing two doping tests earlier this year for an anabolic steroid.WADA filed an urgent application before the CAS ad hoc Division to challenge the decision of NADA India to exonerate Narsingh Yadav following two positive anti-doping tests with methandienone on 25 June and 5 July 2016, said CAS in a statement. The CAS Panel did not accept the argument of the athlete that he was the victim of sabotage and noted that there was no evidence that he bore no fault, nor that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional.Yavdav was the fourth athlete to be kicked out of the Games on Thursday for failing a dope test.Brazilian cyclist Kleber Ramos and Chinese swimmer Chen Xinyi were disqualified for the banned blood booster EPO Cera and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide respectively.Kyrgyzstani weightlifter Izzat Artykov, who won bronze in the mens under-69kg category, was banned after testing positive for strychnine, a stimulant.

Carl Larry, consultant at Frost & Sullivan, said lower US jobless claims suggested an improving economy. We are continuing the bullish trend this week, Larry said. Traders are targeting higher prices.Analysts also cited weakness in the dollar as a boost for petroleum prices following Federal Reserve meeting minutes released Wednesday that suggested central bankers would remain cautious on raising interest rates.Oil is traded internationally in the US currency. A weaker dollar boosts demand for crude outside the US. Brent has climbed... to $50 per barrel for the first time since early July, finding support from a weaker US dollar and an unexpectedly marked decline in US crude oil and gasoline stocks, said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch.

Dollar weaken further on ambivalent Fed stance

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar again weakened against the euro, the yen and the British pound on Thursday as markets continued to absorb ambivalent signals from the US central bank.Towards 2100 GMT, the euro was at $1.1354, up from $1.1287, levels not seen since the fears created by Britains June vote to exit the European Union. The dollar sank below the 100 yen mark, falling to 99.94 yen from 100.28.
