Attack on Kabul's American University ends as attackers killed

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - An attack at the American University in Kabul ended after two attackers were killed, police said early Thursday, nearly 10 hours after militants stormed the complex, prompting desperate pleas for help from trapped students. The attack triggered explosions and gunfire, killing at least one person and wounding 26 others in an assault which comes just weeks after two university professors -- an American and an Australian -- were kidnapped at gunpoint near the school. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but it comes as Taliban insurgents step up their summer fighting season against the Western-backed Kabul government. We have ended our clean-up operation. Two attackers were gunned down, Fraidoon Obaidi, chief of Kabul polices Criminal Investigation Department, told AFP without offering any details.Local media reported that hundreds of students had been rescued during the overnight operation, many of whom tweeted desperate messages for help, with some using classroom furniture to barricade the doors.Among them was Associated Press photojournalist Massoud Hossaini, who was said to be wounded and later managed to escape with some fellow students. The attack started on Wednesday evening, when the private university is usually packed with students, many of them working professionals doing part-time courses.I heard explosions and gunfire is going on close by... our classroom is filled with smoke and dust, an anxious student told AFP by telephone, before managing to escape.Authorities refused to confirm whether any hostages had been taken.NATO military advisers were helping Afghan forces to respond to the attack, a US official said, without specifying how many troops were involved. Many of the wounded were rushed into waiting ambulances outside the university on stretchers, as erratic gunshots rang out from inside the campus.Obaidi declined to confirm details on casualties but the health ministry said late Wednesday that at least one person had been killed and 26 others wounded, many of them critically. The American University of Afghanistan, which opened in 2006 and enrolls more than 1,700 students, is seen as a high-profile target for militants partly because it attracts foreign faculty members. The two foreign professors at the university were seized from their vehicle on August 7, as the kidnappers smashed the passenger window and hauled them away at gunpoint. It appeared to be the first reported abduction related to a private university in Afghanistan. Their whereabouts are still unknown and no group so far has publicly claimed responsibility for the abductions, the latest in a series of kidnappings in the conflict-torn country. The Afghan capital is infested with organised criminal gangs who stage kidnappings for ransom, often targeting foreigners and wealthy Afghans, and sometimes handing them over to insurgent groups. The uptick in violence comes as the Taliban escalate nationwide attacks, underscoring the worsening security situation in Afghanistan. Afghan forces backed by US troops are seeking to head off a potential Taliban takeover of Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern opium-rich province of Helmand. The turmoil convulsing Helmand, blighted by a huge opium harvest that helps fund the insurgency, has left thousands of people displaced, sparking a humanitarian crisis as officials report food and water shortages. The Taliban have also closed in on Kunduz -- the northern city they briefly seized last year in their biggest military victory so far -- leaving Afghan forces stretched on multiple fronts. But coalition forces have insisted that neither Kunduz nor Lashkar Gah are at risk of falling to the insurgents.

Oil slides on surprise jump in US crude stockpiles

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slumped Wednesday as a surprise jump in US crude stockpiles added to lingering concerns over a global supply glut. The US Department of Energy said commercial inventories of crude grew by 2.5 million barrels last week, in contrast to analyst expectations for a drop of around 850,000.That helped reverse gains of Tuesday driven by a report that Iran might support an OPEC output freeze. In New York, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in October lost $1.33 at $46.77 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for October delivery slid 91 cents to $49.05 a barrel in London trade.News of an increase in US inventories has just reminded investors once again about the ongoing oversupply in the markets, FXTM analyst Jameel Ahmad told AFP.He added that recent downgrades to global economic growth have meanwhile raised a few concerns over the possibility of reduced demand for the commodity.Crude prices had jumped Tuesday on a report that Iran could support an effort by OPEC and Russia to freeze production and firm prices.Members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries led by Saudi Arabia are planning to meet next month with major non-cartel producer Russia in Algeria, where they are expected to discuss ways to stabilize the market. But an Iranian oil ministry source told AFP on Wednesday that the key OPEC member had yet to take any decision on setting an output ceiling or even on taking part in the meeting. It is too early to talk of a decision from Iran concerning a freeze in the level of production, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. When Iraq and Saudi Arabia are producing at record levels, it is difficult to see Iran being happy to produce well below their potential, said IG Markets analyst Angus Nicholson.

Windies, India enter new world in United States

FORT LAUDERDALE (AFP) - West Indies face India in two Twenty20 internationals in Florida at the weekend in a litmus test for both crickets future in the US and Carlos Brathwaites credentials as Caribbean skipper. After India cruised to victory in the Test series and in the aftermath of the Caribbean squads latest round of blood-letting, the sides head for the sports newest outpost, the Central Broward Regional Park, the only purpose-built cricket stadium in the US.Six matches in the recent franchise-based Caribbean Premier League were played at the $10 million arena while the first full international matches, two Twenty20 games between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, were staged there in 2010.Saturday and Sundays back-to-back fixtures come at a crucial time for the West Indies. They may be the reigning world champions in the format having triumphed in India earlier this year, but that didnt save Darren Sammys job as skipper. He was sacked in what he claimed was a 30-second phone call and replaced by Brathwaite who etched his name into West Indies cricket folklore by smashing four sixes in the final over against England to win this years World T20 final in Mumbai.I think a team like this will be pretty easy to lead, from the point of view that the dressing room is a fun place to be, said Brathwaite.I dont think its a case where I have to negotiate too many egos. His first job will be to introduce stability into the engaging but often frustrating nature of West Indies short-form cricket -- before they won their second World T20 in four years, they lost to Afghanistan in the qualifying round.Despite his heroics in Mumbai, 28-year-old Brathwaite is a lightweight when it comes to international experience, having played just three Tests, 14 ODIs and eight Twenty 20s.In contrast, the teams superstar Chris Gayle has 103 Tests, 269 ODIs and 50 T20s to his name as well as a host of batting records.India, meanwhile, have no worries over their confidence levels heading into the weekend. They have enjoyed a solid run in T20 series in recent times, winning in Australia, Sri Lanka and claiming the Asia Cup before recovering to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in June.Twelve of the 14-man Test squad will be in Florida with skipper Virat Kohli handing over leadership duties to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. They will have revenge on their minds having lost to the West Indies in the semi-finals of this years World Twenty20.A crowd of 15,000 is expected in Florida over each of the two days including vast numbers of expatriates.India is a like the rock star of cricket, Rizwan Mohammed told the Sun Sentinel newspaper whose reporter went to great lengths to demystify the sport for his American readership.Instead of four bases there are two wickets bracketing a rectangular 22-yard-long dirt pitch at the centre of an oval ground, wrote the papers correspondent. The 11 fielders have various ways of getting the batter out, including striking the wicket behind the batsman with a bowled ball or catching a batted ball on the fly.West Indies squad: Carlos Brathwaite (capt), Andre Fletcher, Andre Russell, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Johnson Charles, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Samuel Badree, Sunil NarineIndia squad: MS Dhoni (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Stuart Binny, Umesh Yadav, Virat Kohli

Italy quake toll climbs to at least 159: official

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck a remote area of central Italy climbed to at least 159 late Wednesday, said the head of the countrys civil protection agency, Fabrizio Curcio.Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had earlier given a toll of 120 dead and 368 injured. Rescuers were working through the night to pull survivors from the rubble and wont slow down, Curcio told public broadcaster Rai.With 368 people injured, some critically, and an unknown number trapped under rubble, the death toll from the pre-dawn quake was expected to rise, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi told reporters after visiting the badly-hit village of Amatrice. This is not a final toll, he warned as hundreds of emergency services staff and volunteers prepared to work through the night in the hope of plucking more survivors from the ruins.Renzi said it was too early to begin a debate on what might have been done to prevent the disaster.Today is the time for tears and emotion, he said, vowing that his government would start reconstruction work first thing on Thursday.Hundreds of people were to spend a chilly night in hastily-assembled tents with the risk of aftershocks making it too risky for them to return home.Scores of buildings were reduced to dusty piles of masonry in communities close to the epicentre of the quake, which had a magnitude of between 6.0 and 6.2.It hit a remote area straddling Umbria, Marche and Lazio at a time of year when second-home owners and other visitors swell the numbers staying there. Many of the victims were from Rome. The devastated area is just north of LAquila, the city where some 300 people died in another quake in 2009.Most of the deaths occurred in and around the villages of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto.Guido Bordo, 69, lost his sister and her husband after they were trapped inside their holiday house in the hamlet of Illica, near Accumoli.Theres no sound from them, we only heard their cats, he told AFP before the deaths were confirmed.I wasnt here. As soon as the quake happened, I rushed here. They managed to pull my sisters children out, theyre in hospital now, he added, wringing his hands in anguish.Among the victims was a nine-month-old baby girl whose parents survived, an 18-month-old toddler and two other young children who died with their parents in Accumoli. Two boys aged four and seven were saved by their quick-thinking grandmother, who ushered them under a bed as soon as the shaking began, according to reports. She also survived but lost her husband. It was Italys most powerful earthquake since the 2009 disaster in LAquila.Half the village has disappeared, said Amatrice mayor Sergio Pirozzi, surveying a town centre that looked as if had been subjected to a bombing raid.Pope Francis expressed his shock. To hear the mayor of Amatrice say his village no longer exists and knowing that there are children among the victims, is very upsetting for me, he said. The tremors were strong enough to be felt 150 kilometres (90 miles) away in Rome, where authorities ordered structural tests on the Colosseum. Some of the worst damage was in Pescara del Tronto, a hamlet near Arquata in the Marche region where the bodies of the dead were laid out in a childrens play park. With residents advised not to go back into their homes, temporary campsites were being set up in Amatrice and Accumoli as authorities looked to find emergency accommodation for more than 2,000 people.Amatrice is a hilltop beauty spot famed as the home of amatriciana, one of Italys favourite pasta sauces. It is popular with Romans seeking cool mountain air at the height of the summer. It was packed with visitors when the quake struck at 3:36am (0136 GMT).Three minutes later the clock on the villages 13th-century tower stopped. The first quake measured 6.2, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which said it occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (six miles). It measured 6.0 according to Italian monitors, who put the depth at only four km. A 5.4-magnitude aftershock followed an hour later.Italy is vulnerable to earthquakes. The 2009 tragedy in LAquila led to lengthy recriminations over lax building controls and the failure of authorities to warn residents that a quake could be imminent.David Rothery, Professor of Planetary Geosciences at Britains Open University, said the shallow depth of Wednesdays quake had made it more destructive. But he added: Unlike the LAquila quake, which was preceded by swarms of smaller quakes and led to claims -- unjustified in my view -- that the eventual big quake should have been predicted, this one appears to have struck out of the blue.

Dizzy Roy sets up England win over Pakistan

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - Jason Roy overcame a dizzy spell to lead Englands charge to a 44-run win under the Duckworth/Lewis method in a rain-marred first one-day international against Pakistan in Southampton on Wednesday.Surrey opener Roys quickfire 65 fired England towards an initial victory target of 261 after Pakistan had made 260 for six, captain Azhar Ali top-scoring with 82.But following a third and final rain interruption of this day/night fixture at 9:37 pm local time (2037 GMT), the umpires eventually called the game off with England 194 for three.Eoin Morgan, the England captain, was 33 not out and Ben Stokes 15 not out. Roy and Joe Root (61) took England to the brink of victory with a second-wicket stand of 89 in 14 overs. The 26-year-old Roy sparked Englands chase with three fours in four balls off Umar Gul.But there was a worrying moment when Roy, on 20, needed several minutes on-field treatment for a dizzy spell. It was a case of not having enough sugar on me apparently, thats it plain and simple, Roy told reporters.I had a headache, felt a bit dizzy, they got the physio and the doctor on, they told me to get some sugar on board.I was able to get my bearings, settle and re-set myself and just go again, he added.Meanwhile opening partner Alex Hales, who managed just 145 runs during the preceding 2-2 drawn Test series against Pakistan, again fell cheaply. Hales was out for seven when he guided Gul straight to Mohammad Hafeez at slip.Mohammad Amir had five catches dropped off his bowling during the Test series and the Pakistan pacemans bad luck continued Wednesday.Roy, on 24, skied left-arm quick Amir high on the legside. The ball appeared to be heading straight to Gul at square leg. However, wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed called for the catch, only to make insufficient ground and drop the chance despite getting both gloves to the ball.Pakistan may have recently climbed to the top of the Test rankings, but this was the kind of fielding error which had helped leave them languishing in ninth place in the equivalent ODI standings.Roy swept left-arm spinner Imad Wasim for the first six of the match before completing a 43-ball fifty also featuring five fours. But his innings ended when a lofted drive off spinner Mohammad Nawaz was brilliantly caught just inside the boundary by Babar, running round from long-off.Root, Englands star batsman in all three formats, was untroubled while hitting six fours in 72 balls. But when Morgan dropped the ball into the offside and set off, Root failed to beat Azhars direct hit.Earlier, Azhar won the toss and led from the front in an innings where Ahmed made 55 and Azam was unluckily lbw for 40.Pakistan were going well at 173 for three after 35 overs but then lost Azhar and the skipper felt his side had fallen short with the bat.300 obviously, we always look to score 300, but definitely 280-290.One of your top order has to score and bat long, triple figures would be nice and you always build a total when the top order perform, said the opener. Azhar, however, was twice dropped on nine. Hales floored a relatively routine chance in the gully before wicket-keeper Jos Buttler could not hold a more difficult left-handed catch down the legside. Babar was given out lbw to leg-spinner Adil Rashid by Australian umpire Simon Fry, even though replays clearly showed an inside edge. But by that stage Pakistan had used up their lone review of the innings.Azhar pressed on to a relatively sedate 84-ball fifty before upping his tempo. But he fell when top-edging a slog-sweep off Rashid (two for 51) to Moeen Ali at short third man.The five-match series continues at Lords on Saturday.Brief scores:Pakistan: 260-6, 50 overs (Azhar Ali 82, Sarfraz Ahmed 55).England: 194-3, 34.3 overs (J Roy 65, J Root 61).Result: England won by 44 runs (D/L method).Man-of-the-match: Jason Roy (ENG).Series: England lead five-match series 1-0.

Smith rested, Warner to lead Aussies in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (AFP) - Australias Steve Smith was on Wednesday given a break to focus on the upcoming South Africa tour as his deputy David Warner will lead the side in the remainder of the Sri Lanka tour.Smith, whose team suffered an 82-run loss in the second one-day international with the series now tied at 1-1, was set to return home before the remaining three ODIs and two Twenty20s.I hate missing cricket, but in the long run it will do me a world of good, Smith was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia on Twitter. The schedule is very busy. I still want to take on the role in all three formats and do it to the best of my ability, he added.Cricket Australias national selector Rod Marsh said in a statement: Steve has a large amount of cricket coming up in the next 12 months and we wanted to find a time for him to freshen up and these last five matches provide a good opportunity to do so.Regardless of the results of the first two matches our plan was always for Steve to take a break and refresh ahead of the ODI Series against South Africa next month. This is a great leadership opportunity for David, he has really embraced his role as vice-captain and we are confident he will do a great job in Steves place.Australias tour of South Africa begins on September 27 with an ODI against Ireland in Benoni after which they play five ODIs against the Proteas.

All-round Mathews helps Sri Lanka level ODI series

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Skipper Angelo Mathews Wednesday led from the front with his allround showing to help Sri Lanka register a comprehensive 82-run win against Australia in the second one-day international to level the series at 1-1 in Colombo.Australia, who were chasing a record 289 for victory at R Premadasa Stadium, were bowled out for 206 in 47.2 overs with Matthew Wade top-scoring with 76 runs.Left-arm spinner Amila Aponso claimed four wickets while medium-pacer Thisara Perera took three wickets to choke the Australian run chase. It was a good cricketing wicket, even though it spun. We needed that win and Aponso was brilliant, just amazing and he bowled with a lot of effort, said Mathews. But it was man of the match Mathews two wickets and a 57 with the bat that made Sri Lanka register their biggest win against Australia in terms of runs.Sri Lankas previous best was a 79-run triumph at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 2003.Australias James Faulkner recorded his first ODI hat-trick but Sri Lanka, who chose to bat first, still managed to post 288 in 48.5 overs. In reply Australia, who won the first of the five ODIs by three wickets, were dealt early blows after losing their openers to Thisara Perera.David Warner was caught behind for 1 while Aaron Finch, who scored a half-century in the first ODI, was bowled for four with Australia left struggling at 16 for two.Skipper Steve Smith tried to fight back with his 33-ball 30, his innings laced with five boundaries, but his wicket off Aponso spelt more trouble for the visitors.George Bailey and Wade put together a 61-run fourth wicket partnership to keep Australia in the hunt but the required run-rate just kept mounting.Bailey, who scored 27 off 46 balls, finally succumbed to the pressure of scoring quick runs after being bowled by Aponso, who registered impressive figures of 4-18 in just his second ODI.Leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna soon joined forces with Aponso to get Moises Henriques, who scored four runs, stumped as Sri Lanka gained control of the match.Wade then staged a gritty fightback with support from Travis Head as the duo managed 64 runs between them to keep Australias hopes alive.Wades 88-ball knock was studded with three boundaries but the wicketkeeper-batsman finally became Thisara Pereras third victim and the Australian resistence wilted.Head, who scored 31, soon got out to Mathews as the visitors lost their way into the chase, losing their final five wickets for 24 runs. The hosts rode on half-centuries from Mathews, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera to put up a respectable score against a persistent Australian bowling attack led by Faulkner (3-45).In-form batsmen Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal put together a 125-run third wicket partnership to build a solid platform.Mendis, who followed up his 67 in the first ODI with a run-a-ball 69, hit nine boundaries and forced Australian Smith to use seven bowlers until the 21st over. The pair put quick runs on the board before a triple strike by leg-spinner Adam Zampa checked the hosts surge.Chandimal, who top-scored with an unbeaten 80 in the previous game, was denied his sixth consecutive ODI fifty after Zampa trapped him lbw for 48.The 24-year-old Zampa accounted for dangerman Mendis and then got Dhananjaya de Silva to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 158 for five. The hosts were rescued by another crucial 103-run sixth-wicket partnership between Mathews and Kusal Perera who made 54.But Faulkner hit Sri Lanka hard after getting Kusal Perera with the last delivery of his eighth over. He came back to dismiss Mathews and Thisara Perera to complete his hat-trick.The left-arm pacer, who registered match-winning figures of 4-38 in the first match at the same venue, became the sixth Australian bowler to take an ODI hat-trick.Faulkner bowled nice today, got a few wickets in the end when they were going (briskly). The damage was probably already done at that point of time, said Smith.Starc (3-53) claimed two wickets in the final over to stop Sri Lanka from reaching the 300-run mark, with the hosts losing their last five wickets for 27 runs. The action now shifts to Dambulla for the third ODI on August 28.

ICC to probe Tests washout

DUBAI (AFP) - The International Cricket Council said Wednesday it will launch a review after two Tests in the West Indies and South South Africa were abandoned due to poor ground conditions. The outcome of the West Indies Test against India was branded farcical after only 20 overs of play was possible. In Durban, both South Africa and New Zealand were left ruing the fact that four days were lost and play was impossible even though rain had stopped. The ICC released a statement saying that the outfields at Kingsmead, Durban, and Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain, have been rated as poor by the match referees.Andy Pycroft and Ranjan Madugalle, both from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC match referees, filed a report stating that they were concerned about the quality of the outfields for the first Test between South Africa and New Zealand, and the fourth Test between the West Indies and India, respectively. The reports have been forwarded to Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), who now have 14 days to provide their responses, the ICC said.It said the ICC will launch a review of the respective responses.South Africa-New Zealand and West Indies-India Tests were both interrupted by rain. But once the rain had stopped, the umpires abandoned the Tests because the grounds were unfit for further play.Former West Indies captain Viv Richards called for an inquiry, describing the situation as unacceptable. As hosts of the Test the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board announced that they had also launched an investigation. In Durvan, Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat said the pitch had only recently been relaid and blamed unseasonal rain and earlier flooding.South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said that both teams had been left disappointed. We were dying to get out there, said Du Plessis. But he added: The message was clear from the umpires that the players safety was their main concern.
