Brent slides under $50 as Iraq moves to boost output

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices slid Monday, slamming the brakes on last weeks rally as events in Nigeria and Iraq pointed to a possible surge in supplies.in London, trade on Brent North Sea crude for delivery in October slumped $1.72 from Friday to $49.16 a barrel. In New York trade, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery shed $1.47 to $47.05 a barrel. The fall came as Iraq signaled a likely increase in output from Kirkuks oil fields under a deal between the region and the countrys new oil minister.Bloomberg reported that shipments from three northern oil fields could rise by 150,000 barrels a day following the resolution of a payment dispute between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the central government. In addition, a rebel group in Nigeria has announced a conditional ceasefire and agreed to hold talks with the countrys government following months of attacks on key oil and gas facilities. In a weekend message posted on the Niger Delta Avengers website, the group said it would observe a cessation of hostilities, so long as the countrys ruling party stops what it called harassment of innocent civilians.Matt Smith of Clipper Data added that short covering partially behind last weeks surge had eased, taking upward pressure off prices.Oil is buffeted by US dollar gains and news that Iraq plans to boost its exports, stoking fears that the supply glut will worsen, said Bernard Aw, an analyst with IG Markets in Singapore.Fresh developments about an OPEC discussion on a possible output freeze next month could provide a base for oil prices, he told AFP.

The dollar stays weak after comments by Fed's Fischer

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar remained at the low end of its recent range Monday as foreign exchange traders remained cautious despite somewhat hawkish weekend remarks by Federal Reserve Vice Chair Stanley Fischer. At 2100 GMT, the dollar was virtually unchanged from late Friday at $1.1322 per euro and 100.32 yen, despite a surge during the day.Analysts said markets would likely move sideways ahead of the Federal Reserves Jackson Hole, Wyoming central banking symposium that will be capped by a speech from Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Friday.Markets are looking for signals on how slow or fast the Fed will move toward increasing interest rates, with Fed policymakers split in recent months over the US economys strength and the prospects for strong inflation.Fischer, whose views are usually in line with Yellens, said Sunday that the Fed was close to its policy targets on unemployment and inflation, and that he expects US growth to pick up in the coming quarters.Recent statements by Fed officials appeared to hint that the central bank was closing ranks behind a single message favoring the resumption of stimulus withdrawal, said Ilya Spivak of DailyFX.

Probe after Windies-India Test abandoned

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board have launched an investigation after the fourth and final Test between the West Indies and India lasted just 22 overs due to a waterlogged outfield. No play was possible at the Queens Park Oval on Mondays scheduled last day of the match, the fourth consecutive day on which there was no play because of saturated areas around the playing square. The farcical abandonment came despite long periods of sunshine and desperate efforts of groundstaff to make the surface playable with shovels, pitchforks and leaf blowers. With the match abandoned as a draw, India won the series 2-0, the first time they have won more than one Test in a series in the Caribbean. However the Indians surrendered the position of number one Test team in the ICC rankings to Pakistan as they had needed to complete a 3-0 series triumph to stay top.India had been number one for less than a week after displacing Australia at the top on August 17.As hosts, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and QPCC (Queens Park Cricket Club) regret that limited play was possible in the 4th Test Match between WI and India at the Queens Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath said in a statement. We have jointly launched an investigation to determine what occurred with a view to remedying the situation so that this does not occur in the future, the statement continued. Once this has been done it will be presented to the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board).Bassarath gave no indication of a time-frame for the conclusion of the investigation. It is understood that prominent officials of QPCC, who celebrated the 125th anniversary of the clubs founding over the Test match weekend, are concerned that the farcical abandonment could jeopardise the venue hosting major international matches in the futurePakistan are scheduled to tour the Caribbean in 2017.The shambolic finale will be of major concern to the WICB, given that the agreement of the Indians to play four Tests in the Caribbean was seen as a major diplomatic triumph after the abandonment of a tour of India by the West Indies in October 2014.India subsequently dropped their multi-million dollar compensation claim against the WICB after the tour was cut short amid a players pay dispute.West Indies and India will play two Twenty20 Internationals in Lauderhill, Florida, on August 27 and 28 as both teams seek to tap into the huge expatriate Indian population in the United States.

Play abandoned again in Durban

Posted:

DURBAN (AFP) - Play was called off without a ball bowled because of a wet outfield on the fourth day of the first Test between South Africa and New Zealand at Kingsmead on Monday. It was the second successive day on which no play was possible, almost certainly condemning the match to end in a draw. The series will then hinge on the second and final Test starting at Centurion on Saturday. No play had taken place since rain fell during the lunch break on the second day, when New Zealand were on 15 for two in reply to South Africas first innings total of 263.After an inspection before the scheduled resumption on Monday, the umpires said underfoot conditions remained too soft on an outfield which was re-seeded in June and suffered damage during a freak storm in July and rain on Saturday and Sunday. After two further inspections, play was abandoned. The difficulties with the weather in Durban have come at the same time that the fourth Test between the West Indies and India in Trinidad has seen three successive days called off due to a wet outfield.

Wet outfield forces draw in Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) - The fourth and final Test of the series between the West Indies and India was abandoned as a draw because of a waterlogged outfield on the scheduled fifth morning in Trinidad on Monday. No play was possible for the fourth consecutive day at the Queens Park Oval, after only 22 overs were bowled at the start of the match with the West Indies reaching 62 for two before lunch on day one. A torrential shower at the lunch interval prevented play for the remainder of the day and also left the playing area unfit for action over the remaining four days despite the desperate efforts of local authorities to have the ground dried out in continuing sunshine.India win the series 2-0 but surrender the top spot in the Test rankings to Pakistan as they needed to defeat the West Indies 3-0 to prevent their arch-rivals from supplanting them at the top, following a 2-2 series draw in England. This match goes down in the 139 years of Test cricket as the third-shortest match ever and officials of the West Indies Cricket Board, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and the Queens Park Cricket Club have faced severe criticism over their management of a situation that was always likely to unfold given that August is one of the rainiest months of the year in Trinidad. No Test match had ever been scheduled after the month of June in the 86 years that the venue has been hosting international cricket.West Indies cricket now holds the unenviable record of hosting the three shortest Test matches for reasons related to pitch and playing conditions. In 1998, the first Test of the series against England at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica lasted less than an hour before the umpires determined that the pitch was too dangerous for the English batsmen to face genuine fast bowling. And in 2009, also against England, the scheduled second Test of the series survived less than two overs when the officials determined that the heavily-sanded outfield, which included the bowlers run-ups, made proper movement without the risk of injury for the fielding team almost impossible.
