Tennis: Serena shoulders burden of history at US Open

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Serena Williams once again arrives at Flushing Meadows poised to rewrite the tennis record books -- if her own troublesome right shoulder and increasingly emboldened rivals allow. The 34-year-old US superstar matched Steffi Grafs Open Era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles with her triumph at Wimbledon in July. With a seventh US Open triumph she can break Grafs record, and continue her march toward Australian Margaret Courts all-time mark of 24 Grand Slam titles. She could also break Grafs record of 186 consecutive weeks atop the world rankings, and surpass Chris Evert for most US Open singles titles won in the Open Era.But after seeing a frustrating year go by between her 21st Grand Slam win and No. 22, Williams said shed learned to let history take care of itself.I learned not to get involved in those debates and conversations, Williams said after her straight-sets victory over Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final. I definitely had some sleepless nights ... Ive just felt a lot of pressure. When the final Grand Slam of the year gets underway on Monday, the pressure could be on again.Williamss bid to retain her Olympic singles title ended in Rio de Janeiro this month when she was sent crashing out of the third round by Elina Svitolina.Williams was clearly hindered by the shoulder injury that had forced her out of the Montreal WTA tournament as she served up eight double faults and 37 unforced errors in the straight-sets defeat.Since then she has withdrawn from her WTA title defence in Cincinnati, saying the inflammation in her shoulder continues to be a challenge. If Williams isnt at full strength, Kerber is just one of the players poised to pounce. The German defeated Williams in the Australian Open final in January. Seeded second in New York, she is one of three players with a chance to seize the number one ranking if Williams falters.Kerber, 28, boasts a title at Stuttgart, an Olympic silver medal and finals appearances at Brisbane in January and this month in Cincinnati -- where she missed her first chance to supplant Williams atop the rankings.Being viewed as a legitimate threat to Williams, Kerber said, is really special.Because Serena is one of the best players and athletes in the world, she said. Of course its really special that a lot of people are speaking about her and then speaking about me.Third-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza also has a shot at the top, although the 22-year-old who stunned Williams in the French Open final will need her best US Open ever to do so.In three main-draw appearances she has won just one match. Turning around her Flushing Meadows fortunes would further her aim of establishing herself as more than the girl that beat Serena at Roland Garros.I want to really do well there, the Spaniard said. Hopefully this is the year.Fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland also has an outside chance at the world number one ranking if she can claim her first Grand Slam title.Like Radwanska, Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep is seeking a Grand Slam breakthrough while sixth-seeded Venus Williams, who counts two US Open victories among her seven Grand Slam singles titles, is one of a handful of former champions among the seeds. That includes 2004 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Australian Samantha Stosur -- who toppled Serena in the 2011 final.Last years US Open champion Flavia Pennetta of Italy will not defend her title after retiring at the end of last year.

Football: West Ham knocked out of Europa League

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - English Premier League club West Ham suffered a shock defeat by Romanian side Astra Giurgiu on Thursday that saw them knocked out of the Europa League in a mirror image of last seasons campaign.Slaven Bilics side had left the tie in the balance after a disappointing 1-1 away draw a week ago and that result came back to haunt them as Astra took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Filipe Teixeira.West Ham were guilty of slack defending as Daniel Niculae found Teixeira free in the box with the striker rolling the ball past Darren Randolph. That was enough to hand the Romanians a 2-1 victory on aggregate, mirroring Astras 4-3 win over the Hammers at the same stage of Europes second-tier club competition last season, a hammerblow for West Ham fans hoping to see more European football at the clubs new Olympic Stadium base.In other results, French side Saint-Etienne endured a torrid final 45 minutes at stade Geoffroy-Guichard after goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier was sent off on the stroke of half time for punching Beitar Jerusalem striker Itay Shechter. The Israeli striker had collided with the French keeper with his studs showing in a seemingly genuine attempt to play the ball and Les Verts Ruffier was appropriately sent off for his reaction. Despite the red carding, Christophe Galtiers side were never really under threat and saw out a 0-0 draw to progress to the group stages of the Europa League after winning 2-1 in Israel.Italian side Sassuolo, who finished sixth in Serie A last year, qualified for the first time in their history for a European competition after a lacklustre 1-1 draw against Serbias Crvena Zvezda. The Italians had done the bulk of the work last week, winning 3-0 at home.Belgian side Anderlecht were another high profile team to progress to the next round after they despatched Salvia Prague 3-0 to complete a 6-0 aggregate win.Greek side Panathinaikos also advanced to the competitions group stage after a 1-1 draw against Danish side Brondby. The Greeks had won the 1st leg 3-0 giving them an overall win of 4-1 on aggregate.Turkish side Fenerbahce logically advanced to the group stages after outclassing Swiss outfit Grasshoppers. The Turks scored two second half goals through Fernandao and Miloslav Stoch to guarantee qualification.

Golf: Reed, Laird grab early lead at Barclays

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Patrick Reed and Martin Laird fired five-under-par 66s to open up a one-shot lead after the first round of The Barclays Championship on Thursday.World number 14 Reed rattled off 10 consecutive pars over the opening 10 holes before hitting three birdies and an eagle over the final eight holes at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale.Reeds impressive opening round left him sitting pretty alongside Scotlands Laird after a first round that saw Swedens Henrik Stenson limp out injured.Reed, who teed off on the back nine, grabbed the first of his three birdies on the second, before eagling the par-five fourth hole with a 16-foot putt.Further birdies on six and seven completed a flawless display for the 26-year-old from San Antonio, who is chasing a fifth PGA Tour victory. My goal today was to stay patient, stay in it, Reed said. I felt like I was hitting the ball well. I wasnt being that patient when I made 10 straight pars but I was able to get myself on a hot streak and get going. And anytime you shoot bogey-free youre going to get a low one.Laird meanwhile also produced a blemish-free round, carding a 66 after sinking five birdies and no bogeys.Laird and Reed finished ahead of a group of four players on four under, which included Rickie Fowler. Fowlers round included three birdies and an eagle and would have been good enough for a share of the lead had it not been for a bogey on the par-four ninth, when his second shot landed in the front bunker. It was a good solid start, said Fowler, who believes accuracy off the tee will be key heading into the remaining three rounds. Youve got to get the ball on the fairway. You have to be aggressive off the tee here, he said. It pays to be closer on those second shots.World number one and defending champion Jason Day of Australia meanwhile was two off the pace, after a 68.Day recovered from a bogey on the second to carve out four birdies and 12 pars for his three-under-par total. But it was a disappointing return to the day job for newly crowned Olympic champion Justin Rose of England.Rose, who won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro as golf made its return after a 112-year absence, shot a two-over-par 73 after an erratic first round.Rose appeared to be in good shape after back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth. But a bogey on the ninth was followed by four more on the back nine to leave him seven shots off the pace.Swedens Stenson -- silver medallist behind Rose in Rio -- also gave Europe a Ryder Cup scare after withdrawing with a knee injury.World number four Stenson, who carded a three-over-par 74, said he had aggravated an old problem. My right knee, which required surgery in December, 2015, has flared up again, Stenson said in a statement.Regrettably, I need to withdraw this week to allow time for an MRI and see what the next step is.

Proteas, Black Caps shootout for Test honours

Posted:

CENTURION (AFP) - South Africa and New Zealand go into a one-match shootout for series honours when they meet in the second and final Test starting at SuperSport Park in Centurion Saturday. The Proteas can nudge up one place to sixth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings if they win, while the Black Caps will remain fifth irrespective of the result. But the reputation of Test cricket is at much at stake as rankings points after a farcical first Test in Durban where less than 100 overs of cricket were played before a wet, soft outfield prevented any play on the last three days. There was even less cricket in a Test match between the West Indies and India in Port of Spain, also because of outfield conditions. It is the first time Test cricket has been played in South Africa in August, almost two months before the usual start of the season.Preparing grounds for winter conditions has been a challenge - which Durban failed to meet after re-seeding the outfield only two months before the match.Following reports from the match referees, the outfields in Durban and Port of Spain were condemned as poor by the ICC.Centurion groundsman Rudolph du Preez had the advantage of planting winter grass much earlier than Durban, with work starting in April, almost immediately after the 2015-16 season. He said it was necessary to plant winter grass because fielders struggled on dry, dormant summer grass when the same two countries met in a one-day international in August last year. The players are used to sliding in to stop the ball, which on dormant turf you cannot do. That was the major consideration when switching to winter turf. With virtually no rain falling on the South African Highveld during winter - and no rain predicted during the Test - Du Preez is confident that conditions will be suitable for Test cricket. He said more time had been necessary to prepare the pitch because cool conditions meant it took longer to dry out after watering.Du Preez said he did not expect uneven bounce to be as much of a factor as it has been in the later stages of matches in recent seasons. It might not deteriorate as we are used to. It might be a little bit slower, it might be holding back a bit more, he said.Centurion has been a fortress for South Africa in Test cricket, with the home side having won 16 of the 21 Tests at the ground.Their only two losses were against England in a contrived result in 1999-2000, engineered by the late Hansie Cronje before he was banned from cricket because of his association with bookmakers, and against Australia in 2013-14.The hosts go into the match buoyed by the form shown by opening bowlers Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, both returning from injury, although they only bowled six overs each before rain intervened on the second day in Durban.South Africas batting is a concern, however, with AB de Villiers missing because of injury and several players falling to loose shots in Durban.New Zealand have an advantage in terms of match practice after playing and winning two Tests in Zimbabwe before coming to South Africa.Probable teams:South Africa: Faf du Plessis (capt), Dean Elgar, Stephen Cook, Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock (wkt), Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Dane Piedt.New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling (wkt), Mitchell Santner, Doug Bracewell, Neil Wagner, Tim Southee, Trent Boult.Umpires: Ian Gould (ENG), Paul Reiffel (AUS).TV umpire: Richard Illingworth (ENG).Match referee: Andy Pycroft (ZIM).

Lehmann backs Smith's Sri Lanka series opt out

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia coach Darren Lehmann has backed the decision to rest skipper Steve Smith for the remaining one-day international series against Sri Lanka after criticism from ex-captain Michael Clarke, reports said Friday.Smith will miss three ODIs and two Twenty20 games to return home and prepare for next months one-day series in South Africa.Smith played in all three losing Tests against the Sri Lankans and the first two one-day internationals before it was announced he would fly home to rest up.Clarke, who retired after last years Ashes defeat in England, expressed his surprise at the decision.I would of (sic) liked to have seen the captain play until the series was won and then have a rest, World Cup-winning skipper Clarke said on social media. In the same breath if Smithy needed a break then he should have flown home after the Test matches not 2x ODIs in.Former Test opener Michael Slater echoed Clarkes sentiments, but Lehmann said he had no issue with their comments. Its obviously a burden but a great burden captaining your country, Lehmann was quoted as saying in Australian newspapers Friday. We just wanted to make sure that hes fresh and ready to go for South Africa and then the big (domestic) summer ahead. We planned that for a long time and he took some convincing. But as a coach and a selection panel were making sure hes fresh and ready to go each and every time he plays for Australia.Lehmann said he had no problems with Clarkes criticism. We respect our former captains and former greats who have an opinion, Lehmann told The Daily Telegraph. But we think its the best thing for Steven to get him right and ready to go.Its hard work captaining in all three formats. So were just making sure he gets a small break, and were only talking an extra week or two.David Warner will take over the Australia captaincy in Sri Lanka for the rest of the tour.

Uber lost at least $1.27 billion in the first half of this year

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 25, 2016 (AFP) - The on-demand car ride service Uber lost at least $1.27 billion in the first half of this year, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources close to the matter. As a private company, San Francisco-based Uber is not obliged to disclose details of its financial performance, however, it recently conducted a conference call with investors.Uber chief financial officer Gautam Gupta led the call, during which it was revealed that the company lost $520 million in the first three months of this year and another $750 million in the following quarter, according to Bloomberg.Uber did not reply to an AFP request for comment.Uber has invested heavily as the ride-sharing service seeks to make inroads at home and abroad. The company is seen as a star of the sharing economy, enabling people with smartphones to summon low-cost rides from motorists.Uber has been valued at more than $60 billion, but has racked up losses at it expands and takes on competitors such as Lyft. The prime cause of this years red ink at Uber was believed to be a costly campaign in China with local rival Didi Chuxing.Early this month, Uber announced that Didi Chuxing will take over its operations in China, ending a ferocious battle for market share. In exchange for the Uber China assets, Uber and its Chinese partners will receive shares equivalent to 20 percent of Didi Chuxing, a statement said.Since Uber launched its China operations little more than two years ago, both companies have spent billions of dollars and traded vitriolic accusations as they fought for dominance in the potentially lucrative market. As part of the merger, Didi Chuxing also took a stake in Uber, with reports saying it will invest $1 billion, valuing the US firm at $68 billion.Uber has become one of the worlds most valuable startups -- with operations in more than 50 countries -- but the company has faced regulatory hurdles and protests from established taxi operators in most locations where it has launched.

Ryan Lochte charged over false robbery claim

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - US swimming star Ryan Lochte has been charged with making a false statement about being robbed at gunpoint during the Olympics, Brazilian police said Thursday. One police official quoted by Brazilian media said the 32-year-old gold medal-winner risks a jail sentence, though judicial authorities had yet to confirm that.Ryan Lochte was charged with the crime of falsely reporting a crime, police said in a statement, adding that the case had been referred to the courts. The police statement said they had recommended that the courts issue a summons for the 32-year-old gold medal-winner to be questioned.Once he is summoned, whether he turns up or not, the penalty is the same: one to six months prison, Rio police official Clemente Braune was quoted as saying by news website G1.If he is summoned and does not turn up to the hearing, the trial will go ahead in the accuseds absence until the final sentence is given.Lochte apologized last week for saying that he and three team mates had been mugged on their way back from an all-night party by robbers pretending to be police.Rio police chief Fernando Veloso later told a press conference that the swimmers were not robbed but were detained when they tried to flee after vandalizing a gas station bathroom. The tale humiliated first the Brazilian hosts of the Games and later Lochtes own Team USA when police contested his story.Top sponsors such as Speedo and Ralph Lauren this week abandoned Lochte.Im taking full responsibility for it, Lochte said in an interview broadcast in part late Saturday.I over-exaggerated that story and if I had never done that, we wouldnt be in this mess.

Blatter fights FIFA ban in marathon final appeal

Posted:

LAUSANNE (AFP) - Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter fought to overturn his ban from football in a marathon, 14-hour appeal hearing on Thursday, in a long-shot bid at redemption after his career ended in disgrace.Blatter mounted his defence against the six-year FIFA suspension imposed over ethics violations at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which typically has the final word in major sport disputes.Engulfed by corruption scandals since May of last year and the target of a criminal investigation in his native Switzerland, the 80-year-old Blatter appeared upbeat after emerging from the courthouse well into the night. Its a long day, Blatter said at 10:35 pm (2035 GMT). I cannot give any prognosis how it will be decided. He entered CAS shortly before 8:00 am wearing a dark navy suit and sporting some light stubble, telling reporters he remained optimistic and had confidence in the arbitrators. The case that triggered Blatters downfall first emerged in September of last year, when Swiss prosecutors said they were investigating him over a suspect two million Swiss franc payment ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) he authorised in 2011 to his one-time heir apparent, Michel Platini.Blatter has insisted the payment was part of a legitimate oral contract, a claim that has been rejected in multiple hearings at FIFAs in-house courts.World footballs former most powerful man said he would respect the CAS decision, which should be delivered within weeks.I will accept the verdict, Blatter said before the hearing.I do hope it will be positive for me, but we are footballers. We learn to win but also we learn to lose, he added.Platini, the former head of European football, was also sanctioned by FIFA over the funds. The Frenchman lost his CAS appeal in a May verdict that likely diminishes Blatters hopes of victory.Speaking to reporters before giving evidence at Thursdays closed-door hearing, Platini said Blatters fate may already be sealed.Im not sure if a decision hasnt already been made, he said, vowing to tell the truth about the infamous payment for the umpteenth time.Platini left CAS after testifying at around 4:30 pm, but made time for some mild mocking of Blatters stubble.Mr. Blatter is a little tired. He has a beard, so Ill send him a razor, the ex-UEFA boss said.Blatter restated his claim that he authorised the payment because FIFA owed Platini money.Platini had been hired by FIFA as a consultant from 1999 to 2002 and had apparently not received his full compensation.I am sure, at the end... that the panel will understand that the payment made to Platini was really a debt that we had with him, Blatter said Thursday. This is a principle: if you have debts you pay them.FIFAs ethics committee was not convinced by the explanation, banning both Blatter and Platini for eight years in December. Those suspensions were however cut to six years on appeal in February.CAS however judged FIFAs sanctions against Platini too severe and trimmed his suspension to four years. That outcome would likely offer little comfort to the ageing Blatter, whose four-decade career as a football broker is likely over.Separate from the Platini case, Swiss prosecutors are also investigating Blatter over alleged mismanagement during his 17-year tenure as FIFA president. He was replaced in that job by fellow Swiss national and former UEFA number two Gianni Infantino in February. An investigation commissioned by Infantinos administration also accused Blatter and two top deputies -- Jerome Valcke and Markus Kattner -- of awarding themselves nearly $80 million worth of improper salary increases and bonuses during their final five years in office. Both Valcke and Kattner have been sacked by FIFA. Valcke is also the subject of a Swiss criminal probe.Blatter and Platini were the most prominent casualties during more than a year of unprecedented scandal that upended world football, but many others have fallen.Prosecutors in New York have indicted 40 football and sports marketing executives over allegedly receiving tens of millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.

Trump victory could cause global recession: Citigroup

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - If New York developer Donald Trump wins the White House in November, the global economy could slip into recession, according to a forecast from Citigroup Thursday. In a research note a team led by the US banks chief economist Willem Buiter said the election was a major source of uncertainty in the global economy. Our base case is for a (Hillary) Clinton victory and mostly continuity in policies, the note said, adding that a Clinton administration could result in a major fiscal expansion.A victory by Republican candidate Trump could foretell of darker times, however, they said.Presuming increases in global uncertainty and tightening of US financial conditions, a Trump victory could lower global GDP growth by around 0.7-0.8 percentage points, the note said, pushing GDP growth easily below our benchmark for a global recession. The note defined recession at world GDP expansion of 2.0 percent or less, at market exchange rates.Trump, who has lent his name to a broad array of commercial ventures with of varying degrees of success, has campaigned on his business acumen as antidote to the perceived failures of conventional wisdom in Washington. The New York Times on Thursday put the odds of a Trump victory over democratic rival Clinton at 12 percent. The Trump campaign could not be reached immediately for comment on the Citigroup report.

LONDON (AFP) - England are to go ahead with their tour of Bangladesh, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed Thursday. We can confirm that @englandcrickets tour of Bangladesh will continue as planned, said a statement on the ECBs official Twitter feed. The future of the tour was thrown into doubt when an attack in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, saw 20 hostages killed, including nine Italian citizens, with the Islamic State group claiming responsibility. An ECB delegation led by led by security adviser Reg Dickason, accompanied by director of cricket operations John Carr and David Leatherdale of the Professional Cricketers Association recently visited Bangladesh to make their own security assessment.Following their return, the ECB said Thursday that the three one-day internationals and two Tests which England are due to play in Bangladesh in October and November before heading to India were set to go ahead as scheduled.England players -- including Test captain Alastair Cook and One-Day captain Eoin Morgan -- received a briefing Thursday from longstanding security chief Dickason, accompanied by ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss, Leatherdale and Carr, as well as Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive.Following the meeting Strauss, a former England captain, said: Englands tour of Bangladesh will continue as planned.Safety and security of players and management are always paramount. England are due to arrive in Bangladesh on September 30, with their schedule also including three warm-up matches. one before the ODIs and two ahead of the Tests. They are set to leave Bangladesh on November 2 ahead of a five-Test series in India starting the following week.Australia cancelled their tour of Bangladesh in October for security reasons and then withdrew their side from the Under-19 World Cup in the country at the start of this year.
