TOKYO, Aug 22, 2016 (AFP) - Tokyo stocks opened higher on Monday as the yen weakened further on speculation over central bank monetary policies and lifted investor sentiment. The Japanese currency fell against the dollar for a second day after US Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer signalled in a speech on Sunday that a 2016 rate hike is still under consideration.Meanwhile, Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said in an interview published Saturday in the Sankei newspaper that there is sufficient chance the bank will add to its massive easing at next months policy meeting. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index climbed 0.52 percent, or 85.41 points, to 16,631.23 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares rose 0.54 percent, or 6.99 points, to 1,302.66.The dollar was trading at 100.59 yen in early Tokyo trade, up from 100.20 yen in New York.We expect the US dollar to consolidate this week with a modest upside bias, Elias Haddad, a senior foreign-exchange strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia said, Bloomberg News reported. There is room for US interest rate expectations to adjust a bit higher this week, Haddad said.Investors are also awaiting a series of US and Japanese economic data due this week for further clues on central bank policies, analysts said.Investors will be focused on Fed Chair Janet Yellens speech at the Jackson Hole symposium (Friday), but we dont expect her to provide any strong steer on the timing of the next rate hike, Capital Economics said in a note to clients. The annual gathering of US and foreign central bankers in the US state of Wyoming is closely watched for their comments on the state of the global economy and monetary policy.

Marin Cilic stuns Andy Murray in Cincinnati final

CINCINNATI, Aug 21, 2016 (AFP) - Andy Murray hit the wall after 22 consecutive wins, as the newly-crowned Rio Olympic champion lost the final of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters on Sunday to Marin Cilic 6-4, 7-5.The 94-minute victory marked a career breakthrough for the 12th-seeded Croatian, winner of the 2014 US Open.Cilic, 27, claimed his first trophy at a Masters 1000 on his 71st career attempt. The Croatian, who did not win his semifinal over Grigor Dimitrov until nearly 1:30 am Sunday morning due to rain delays, ended with seven aces and broke Murray three times.Cincinnati is only his second title since winning the US Open two years ago.Murray has been on a tear this season, winning grass titles at Queens and Wimbledon before triumphing a week ago over Juan Martin Del Potro at the Olympic final. But the accumulation of tennis finally proved to be too much for the Scot, who played his 14th match in 15 days dating back to the Games.Cilics win was his third against 11 losses to Murray. He is the lowest-ranked Cincinnati champion since number 17 Carlos Moya in 2002.

Obamas wrap up final summer trip as first family

Posted:

WASHINGTON, Aug 21, 2016 (AFP) - President Barack Obama wrapped up his final getaway to Marthas Vineyard Sunday, gearing up for a busy final few months at the White House. The president spent the morning getting in a final round of vacation golf under a near cloudless sky before rolling out in his motorcade with first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia. The Obamas were en route via Air Force one back to Washington late Sunday, with an anticipated arrival time at the White House of around 7:45 pm (2345 GMT).The first family spent just over two weeks at their summer vacation house at the popular Massachusetts retreat, an island located south of Cape Cod.The family dogs, Sunny and Bo, also indulged in the time off. After a relaxing holiday spent golfing, going to the beach and tucking into a stack of page-turning books, the president is returning to a to-do list that includes overseeing flood recovery, tackling Zika virus and boosting Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.Obama is slated to travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tuesday to survey the damage from devastating floods in the region. Some in the state had lamented that the president did not leave his vacation to meet with officials and flood victims earlier.Obama did speak with Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson -- who visited Louisiana last week -- from his vacation home to get an update on the situation. The president will likely also continue urging Congress to release funds for the fight against Zika.He asked Congress in February to allocate $1.9 billion to combat the spreading virus, but was met with resistance by Republican lawmakers who said the funds should instead be moved from coffers previously reserved for fighting the Ebola outbreak.Next month, Obama will visit Laos -- a first for a US president -- in a trip that begins with a G20 summit in China. The September 2-9 tour will be the presidents 11th visit to Asia since he took office in 2009.Obama is also expected to hit the campaign trail for his potential successor Clinton. The president is at his highest approval rating in years and can still rally his partys base, which could prove crucial for the Democratic candidate.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Denmark stunned two-time defending champions France 28-26 to win the Olympic Games mens handball gold medal on Sunday. It was a shock result given that in the last eight years, France have won two Games golds, three world titles and two European crowns.Denmarks previous Olympics best was a fourth place in 1984.Im super proud of everybody in this group, everyone has worked from the first minute that we showed up this summer, said Denmarks Mikkel Hansen. Before I entered these Olympics my dad still had the record in the family. He came in the fourth place in 1984, so Im happy to show him the medal. Ive broken the record in the family too, so its going to be good to see him again.French key player Nikola Karabatic admitted that the Danes had been the stronger on the day.Of course we are very disappointed but we are happy that both the female and male French teams were in the final, said Karabatic. The French womens team were defeated by Russia in their final on Saturday. The Danish were stronger than us today and we had some difficulties, physically, towards the end of the game.I think that we were tired and thats why we lost, basically. But in spite of it all we have a silver medal and this is historical too -- two French teams with silver medals.Germany won the bronze medal earlier Sunday with a 31-25 win over Poland.

Olympics: Kenyan Kipchoge romps to Rio marathon gold

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Red-hot favourite Eliud Kipchoge stormed to a runaway gold medal in a wet mens marathon on Sunday, the final day of competition at the Rio Olympics. The Kenyan broke away at the 35km mark and romped home to win in a time of two hours, eight minutes, 44 seconds -- well over a minute quicker than Ethiopias Feyisa Lilesa, who took silver. American Galen Rupp claimed bronze in 2:10:05.In the shadow of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, poking through the rain clouds from high above the city, Kipchoge produced a virtuoso performance as he added gold to the 5,000m silver he won in Beijing in 2008 and his bronze from Athens 2004.It feels great, he told AFP after winning Kenyas sixth gold medal of the Games, all of them in athletics.I felt I had a little bit in the tank and it was comfortable, it was very comfortable. This is the best win of my life.It was a seventh victory in eight marathons for the 31-year-old phenomenon, who won the London Marathon for the second year running in April, coming within eight seconds of Dennis Kimettos world record of 2:02:57.A morning downpour put paid to any thoughts of a world record as 155 runners representing 80 countries splashed around the course snaking through the heart of Rios historic centre in conditions miles removed from the holiday brochures of sun-kissed Rio.Tokyo champion Lilesa had looked in the mood to push Kipchoge while Rupp kept pace after the trio dropped Ethiopian Lemi Berhanu just after the halfway point. But Kipchoge simply proved too strong, sprinting home along the home straight of the Sambadrome, home of Rios famed carnival, to loud cheers from Brazilian fans before dropping to his knees and crossing himself in celebration.

Olympics: France's Yoka follows fiancee to boxing gold

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Frances Tony Yoka completed a romantic Olympic double on Sunday, winning the super-heavyweight title just days after his fiancee had secured her own boxing gold medal. The 24-year-old from Paris -- the first Frenchman ever to win the Olympic super-heavyweight division -- outfoxed Britains Joe Joyce to claim a split-points decision. After the victory Yoka sought out his fiancee Estelle Mossely, who won Frances first womens Olympic boxing crown on Friday. The couple embraced ringside after he got the narrow win before wrapping themselves in a French Tricolor. Its incredible, this story, Yoka said. We dreamed about competing in the Olympics as a couple. And we dreamed about winning medals, or even gold medals. And now weve done it. Incredible.Yoka revealed hed received a simple instruction before the bout from Mossely.Estelle just said: Ive done my job, you do yours. It was my turn. I couldnt fail, Yoka said.Yoka meanwhile said he was surprised that Joyce had not sought to vary his approach.Hes not intelligent. Look at my face, Yoka said. He hit me a lot on the arms, in my gloves. And every time I struck him I hit him in the head. Look at the guys on the podium -- they are black and blue everywhere. Look at my face, Im pretty good.Yoka said he now plans to follow 2012 Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua -- the International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion -- into the pro ranks.Ive won everything there is to win as an amateur. Four years ago Anthony Joshua was standing in my shoes, he said. I can go as far as him, maybe even further.Joyce meanwhile believed he had done enough to claim the decision.I thought the gold was mine, Ill just have to watch it again. I was landing shots on him and getting through his guard. He nicked it, Joyce, 30, a fine arts graduate, told the BBC.I gave it my all, got the training right, just disappointed. Silver isnt that bad but I expected the gold -- it just wasnt to be. Joshua, who watched the bout from ringside, said Joyce deserved the win.The sky is the limit for him. He is a credit inside and outside the ring.I was just praying he would catch him with one punch. The power Joe possesses... he is a phenomenal fighter.Joyce made the better start, landing some clumping punches to rock the Frenchman.Yoka was more mobile but Joyce was packing the greater power in the final bout of the boxing tournament in Brazil.Joyce was working the body frequently as Yoka seemed sluggish and unable to get his punches away. The pair were gasping by the third and final round, with Mossely watching anxiously on from the stands. However, a confident Yoka stuck his tongue out at the Briton seconds from the final bell -- confident he had the decision.

Olympics: Shields is first two-time American boxing champ

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Claressa Shields retained her middleweight title with a deserved unanimous points decision on Sunday in Rio to become Americas first two-time Olympic boxing champion. The 21-year-old comfortably defeated Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands to add to the gold she won at London 2012, with Chinas Li Qian and Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan taking home bronze each.Shields paraded round the ring afterwards screaming with an American flag fluttering behind her.Shields, who has never looked in trouble at any point in Brazil, stalked her unfancied opponent in the first round, swinging wildly but missing on a couple of occasions until she made contact with a heavy right near the end of the round. The Dutchwoman, 28, had most of the crowd in the 9,000-seat arena on her side -- it is a case of supporting anyone but an American or an Argentine for many Brazilians in Rio -- and they roared their approval when Fontijn enjoyed some success in the second. She landed several times on Shields, but the American was starting to turn the screw and came out with real intent at the start of the third round. The American was building a lead and had her hands down in a sign the confidence was flowing through her, as the pair went at one another at the end of the round with a flurry of wild punches.Shields only had to avoid trouble in the fourth and final round -- and did that comfortably to retain her title.

Olympics: Uzbek upsets dominate Olympic boxing

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Fazliddin Gaibnazarov stunned skilful Cuban-born opponent Lorenzo Sotomayor as Uzbekistan scored two upset gold medals on the final day of Olympic boxing here Sunday. The unfancied Gaibnazarov shrugged off significant height and reach disadvantages to defeat Sotomayor by split decision at the RioCentro Arena in Rio.Sotomayor, who moved to Azerbaijan in 2013 to further his international career, had been the favourite to land a gold. But the gangly 31-year-old never managed to get to grips with his awkward, shorter opponent who burrowed in relentlessly and wobbled Sotomayor with the punch of the fight in the second round.Sotomayor, a relative of Cubas 1992 Olympic high jump champion Javier, was inconsolable after the decision, led away from the ring in shock as a member of his entourage remonstrated angrily with the scorers table. It was the second upset involving an Uzbeki fighter of the afternoon. In the first bout of the day, Shakhobidin Zoirov shocked two-time Russian world champion Misha Aloian to win the flyweight gold.Zoirov, 23, fought in flurries to frustrate his skilful opponent and win by unanimous decision, with the judges scoring it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 in his favour. The Uzbek fighter celebrated deliriously after the decision, hoisted onto the shoulders of one of his cornermen who then carried the fighter around the stadium, milking the applause.I had a dream, to win the Olympics. That was my goal and I was doing everything to reach that goal, Zoirov said. The win completed a 13-year-old ring odyssey for Zoirov, who began fighting at the age of 10.I come from a middle class family, hard working people and I was also working very hard, he said. There were many fights that I lost early in my career and I was very disappointed by this and I cried a lot. They were losses in regional championships, national competitions. There were losses and there were wins but the goal was to win Olympic gold eventually.Aloian, the 2012 Olympics bronze medallist and world champion in 2011 and 2013, was left distraught by the loss. The 27-year-old Armenian-born fighter appeared to be sobbing into his towel as he left the arena with his coaches. I was expecting to get a gold and I was fighting to get a gold medal, he said later.Any boxer wants to be the winner, but its gone already and there is nothing I can do. I dont know what to say, he added.

Football: Bale fires Real Madrid to opening win

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - A Gareth Bale brace and a Marco Asensio lob helped Real Madrid make light work of Real Sociedad, running out 3-0 winners at Anoeta in their opening game of the season in La Liga.Bale was the only member of the renowned BBC forward line who was fit enough to play in Sundays game, as Zinedine Zidanes team travelled to San Sebastian in the midst of an injury crisis, with five regular starters unable to make the squad. As well as star forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Keylor Navas and Pepe were also ruled out, but it didnt stop Madrid earning a convincing win at a notoriously tricky venue.Bale was picked despite having appeared in just one friendly in pre-season, but the Welshman got Madrid off to a flying start, leaping into the air to powerfully nod home Dani Carvajals tempting cross in only the second minute.Kiko Casilla had to be quick off his line at the other end after a short back-pass by Raphael Varane, hacking the ball to safety under pressure.Alvaro Morata nearly scored his first goal since returning to Real Madrid but, after a clever dribble, his strike was deflected behind for a corner. A Toni Kroos effort met the same fate, with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli quick to get down to tip the Germans drilled strike behind.Real Sociedad had a good opportunity to level on the half-hour mark, but former Madrid man Asier Illarramendi opted to pass to Juanmi instead of shooting when well placed and the ball didnt reach his team-mate. It was an end-to-end affair, with Morata denied again by Rulli, while youngster Asensio, picked ahead of James Rodriguez and Isco, continued to bewilder defenders with his quick feet on his first start in La Liga for the European champions. The forward scored Madrids second goal in the 40th minute with an effortless lob after he was sent through on Rullis goal by Varanes pass, scooping the ball over the stopper with ease.Morata was seeing a lot of the ball in the second half but was foiled at every turn, being booked for diving in the area before his shot was saved and Kroos cracked the rebound against Rullis crossbar. The goalkeeper was called into action to tip a Mateo Kovacic piledriver wide as Madrid continued to turn the screw, although despite their dominance they could not stretch their lead until Bale ran through, rounded Rulli and squeezed the ball home with the last kick of the game.Atletico Madrid entertain promoted Alaves in the late game on Sunday, while Sporting Gijon earlier beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1.Champions Barcelona opened their campaign in style on Saturday by beating Betis 6-2 with Luis Suarez scoring a hat-trick and Lionel Messi netting twice.Sevilla beat Espanyol 6-4 in an incredible game with Luciano Vietto scoring twice for the hosts and fellow summer signings Pablo Sarabia, Franco Vazquez, Wissam Ben Yedder and Hiroshi Kiyotake also on target.

Motorcycling: Briton Crutchlow wins Czech MotoGP

Posted:

BRNO (AFP) - Britains Cal Crutchlow on a Honda took his maiden MotoGP win as he dominated a rain-hit race at Brno in the Czech Republic on Sunday.Italian legend Valentino Rossi claimed second on his Yamaha after finishing more than seven seconds behind the Briton, ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez on a Honda. With seven races to go, the result leaves Marquez at the top of the overall standings on 197 points, 53 ahead of Rossi.Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo dropped to third overall, on 138 points, after finishing 17th at Brno and a lap behind as the victim of a poor strategy. We did the best job we could today and Im really, really pleased for my team, said the 30-year-old Crutchlow, of the independent LCR Honda team.I smashed the bike yesterday and honestly they didnt leave the circuit till midnight last night. That was the best way to repay them today. But, kissing his phone after calling his wife who had given birth to their first child on August 2, he confessed a MotoGP win was not everything.I expected probably a different feeling but with Lucy giving birth the other week that was the best feeling in the world, said Crutchlow.Dont get me wrong, winning a race is fantastic but I got the best present a couple of weeks ago.In wet conditions following several hours of steady rain, pole-sitter Marquez took an early lead but was soon replaced by Ducatis Andrea Iannone, the winner from Austria a week ago.Capitalising on his choice of hard-option front and rear tyres, Crutchlow worked his way through the pack patiently from 10th on the grid to take the lead from the Italian whose soft-option front tyre visibly started to wear off.I took the gamble, nobody else did, said Crutchlow, marvelling at the combined-compound strategies used by his rivals. As far as Im concerned, theyre all wimps, if you choose one you dont choose the other. The 37-year-old Rossi, who has won five top-class Grands Prix at Brno, battled back from as low as 12th early in the race.At the beginning I was desperate because I thought wed made a mistake, said the nine-time world champion. But lap by lap, the rear was coming better. It was a great race, Im very happy for these 20 points also because I am second in the championship and I think today we did a good job and we made the right choice.Marquez said he was happy with his ninth podium finish in 11 races this season, although he admitted he had to manage his soft tyres. In the end we lose only four points with Valentino (but) we increased the advantage with Jorge, said the 2013 and 2014 world champion.Crutchlow is the first Briton to win an elite-class Grand Prix since Barry Sheene in 1981.Frances Loris Baz took fourth, his best ever MotoGP result, ahead of Spains Hector Barbera and Irelands Eugene Laverty. In heavy rain earlier on Sunday, Germanys Jonas Folger took his first win of the season in the Moto2 category while Briton John McPhee earned his maiden Moto3 win.
