Anderson waits for security advice on Bangladesh tour

Posted:

LONDON, Aug 18, 2016 (AFP) - James Anderson says he will accept the advice of Englands security experts when it comes to deciding whether he should tour Bangladesh.England are due to fly to Bangladesh on September 30 for three one-day internationals and two Test matches. But there have been concerns about the fixtures since an attack by jihadists on a cafe in the capital Dhaka last month in which 20 hostages and two police officers were killed.Britains Foreign Office currently advises there is a heightened threat of further terrorist attacks and foreigners, in particular westerners, may be directly targeted. An England and Wales Cricket Board delegation led by security adviser Reg Dickason accompanied by director of cricket operations John Carr and David Leatherdale of the Professional Cricketers Association are currently making their own security assessment in Bangladesh.Their ECB will await their report before deciding whether to proceed with the tour.Anderson, Englands all-time leading wicket-taker, said he and his colleagues would await ECB guidance.Obviously as players when youre going on tour somewhere where there have been incidents in the last few months you try to keep tabs on it and there are discussions going on among players, Anderson said Wednesday at an event staged by England sponsor Brut Sport Style.Reg is brilliant at his job and hes looked after us for the best part of 10 years and David is there with the PCA. Well get their feedback when they arrive back.If there are any doubts they will make the call and we trust their ability. These decisions arent -- or really shouldnt be -- in the hands of players.Anderson was among England players who returned to India to finish the 2008 series following the Mumbai terror attacks. The situation is different this time because of the time before the tour goes ahead. In India we were all together as a group, he said.Im sure those of us (who have experience of such trips) will try to help if necessary, but if someone is particularly uncomfortable Im sure they can raise it with the coach, the captain or a senior official within the ECB.Australia cancelled their tour of Bangladesh in October for security reasons and then withdrew their side from the Under-19 World Cup in the country at the start of this year. England dis send a team fielded a team.England are scheduled to play a Test series in India after the Bangladesh leg of the tour.

It was a very difficult first match, he played well, and very aggressive. It was difficult to play in the heat today, Im happy to take a win after not playing for two weeks, the Swiss said, after a back injury ruled him out of the Olympics.Im very happy to win this match. RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 17, 2016 (AFP) - Kaori Icho grabbed a slice of Olympic history as Japan swept all three womens wrestling gold medals on offer at Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.Icho became the first woman in any sport to win four gold medals in individual events across four Games with her victory over Russian Valeriia Koblova Zholobova in the womens freestyle 58kg final.Icho joined five men to have won gold medals in individual events at four straight Olympics.Swimmer Michael Phelps and athletes Carl Lewis and Al Oerter all claimed the same individual event at four Games in a row.Sailors Ben Ainslie and Paul Elvstrom also won four individual golds on the trot but in different classes.Icho, 32, won her previous three golds in 2004, 2008 and 2012 in the 63kg category. The 10-time world champion scored late to overcome the 23-year-old Russian. My opponent came in for a tackle (at the end) so I thought that was my last chance to score, she said. Im happy it worked. There was drama, too, in wins for Sara Dosho and Eri Tosaka.Treble world champion Tosaka got the ball rolling for Japan at the Carioca Arena, coming from behind to beat 2012 silver medallist Mariya Stadnyk of Azerbaijan with a two-point throwdown with seconds remaining.I tried to keep on concentrating on the match and I wanted to win so I just (kept going), Tosaka said.Dosho won gold in her Olympic debut, stunning Olympic and world champion Natalia Vorobeva of Russia in the 69kg final.Dosho produced a two-point takedown in the final minute of the match to level the score at 2-2, and won the match on criteria. It was not our strategy to win like that, with a comeback in the last few seconds, she said of the Japanese wins.I just did not give up and I just convinced myself of never giving up.The bronze medal matches produced exciting action on the mat. Chinas Sun Yunan won the first 48kg bronze medal match, over Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan, in just 54 seconds, and the second bronze went to Elitsa Yankova for Bulgarias first medal in Rio.Sakshi Mali claimed Indias first medal of these Games with a victory for bronze over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan in the 58kg class, with the second bronze going to Tunisias Marwa Amri.Amri is the first woman to win a medal for Tunisia in any of the current combat sports on the Olympic programme -- wrestling, boxing, judo or taekwondo.

Messi and Turan help Barcelona outplay Sevilla in Super Cup

Posted:

BARCELONA, Aug 17, 2016 (AFP) - Arda Turan and Lionel Messi blew away Sevilla as Barcelona lifted their 12th Spanish Super Cup with a 3-0 victory at the Camp Nou Wednesday. With the hosts already leading by two goals from the first leg, Sevilla -- bar an early flurry of chances -- were on the receiving end of a Barcelona football master class.Turan put in his best display yet for the Catalans after a disappointing debut season, scoring once in each half. But it was Messi who masterminded a relentless slew of assaults on Sevillas goal. The visitors Ben Yedder did force a smart early save by Claudio Bravo, firing a low strike towards the goalkeepers far post.Barcelona withstood the early pressure and it took just 10 minutes for them to open the scoring.A good move between Andre Gomes and Messi led to the Argentine putting Turan through and the Turk fired home to break the deadlock. It could have been two shortly afterwards, with Messi drilling a strike inches wide after a good cut-back from Aleix Vidal.Vidal was selected ahead of Sergi Roberto as Luis Enrique shuffled his pack, allowing the Camp Nou a first glimpse of all four new signings in competitive action - Gomes, Samuel Umtiti, Denis Suarez and Lucas Digne.French centre-back Umtiti was having a good game until shortly after the half-hour mark, when he blocked Mariano Ferreiras shot with his arm and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. However, Bravo dived low to his right to deny Sevilla captain Vicente Iborra.Reports in Spanish media suggest Bravo could be moving to Manchester City and he put in a flawless display.Sevilla should have equalised on the stroke of half-time when Vidal allowed Gabriel Mercado space, but his header clipped the top of the crossbar and flew over.It proved a costly miss five minutes after the break when Turan whipped a superb strike from distance over the goalkeeper for Barcas second. He should have had his hat-trick a couple of minutes later when Messi played him in, but his lob cleared both the keeper and the crossbar. It didnt matter as Messi soon made it 3-0, heading home after a superb cross from Digne, who in turn had been fed neatly by Gomes.

Pogba poised for second Manchester United debut

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Aug 17, 2016 (AFP) - Four years after he left through the back door, Manchester United will roll out the red carpet for Paul Pogbas second debut in Fridays Premier League home game with Southampton.Pogba first donned a United first-team shirt when he came on as a half-time substitute for Ryan Giggs in a 3-0 League Cup win over Leeds United in front of 31,031 people at Elland Road in September 2011.His return to action for the club will not be so inauspicious, after United paid Juventus a world-record 89 million pounds (105 million euros, $116 million) to bring the French midfielder back to Old Trafford.Pogba has not played since Frances 1-0 loss to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final, but he told the Manchester Evening News: You have to ask the manager, but I feel very good and have been training for 10 days.I am quite used to this. I played the World Cup two years ago when at Juve and three years ago I was at the Under-20s World Cup as well.So I am OK. It is about your body and I have been training on my holidays.Pogba, 23, missed Uniteds 3-1 win at Bournemouth last Sunday due to a suspension carried over from last seasons Coppa Italia, but his lack of match fitness meant he was unlikely to have featured anyway.Should he play from the start, United manager Jose Mourinho must decide where he is going to play.Mourinho has started the season with a 4-2-3-1 formation and Pogba is expected to take up one of the midfield berths in front of the back four.Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera occupied those roles at Bournemouth.Much has changed since Pogbas last United appearance, in a 5-0 league win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2012.Alex Ferguson retired as manager the following year and Mourinho is the third man to have succeeded him, while former stalwarts such as Giggs, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are no longer around.- Puel warning -================But Mourinhos new-look team made an assured start to their league campaign at Bournemouth, with new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly impressing, the former scoring his first Premier League goal.Victory over Southampton, in the first of 10 Friday night games in the Premier League this season, will enable United to provisionally go three points clear at the top of the table.Southampton won 1-0 on both their most recent visits to Old Trafford, with Charlie Austins 87th-minute header securing victory last January, but they are also a team in transition.Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama have left and Claude Puel has succeeded Ronald Koeman as manager. The south-coast club, who finished one place below United in sixth last season, unveiled a new diamond midfield in last weekends 1-1 draw at home to Watford.Dusan Tadic took up the number 10 role and winger Nathan Redmond, signed from Norwich City for a reported 10 million pounds, played up front, crowning his debut with a volleyed second-half equaliser.Puel has warned that Southamptons last two results at Old Trafford will count for nothing on Friday and he has warned his players not to repeat the sluggish start they produced against Watford.Their (Uniteds) players have changed, their manager has changed and Southamptons view of this team has changed, said the former Monaco, Lyon and Nice coach.Against Watford I didnt like the first half because we didnt play our game, but the second half you can see another team and we improved and played our game.Puel will again be without left-back Ryan Bertrand due to a knee problem.Centre-back Jose Fonte, who played against Pogba in the Euro 2016 final and has been strongly linked with a move to United, remains short of match fitness, but could feature.Central defender Chris Smalling returns for United after sitting out the trip to Bournemouth through suspension.

Oil prices higher as US stockpiles drop

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices edged higher Wednesday as the weekly US inventories report showed significant declines in stockpiles of both crude and gasoline. But the gains were mitigated somewhat as the US Energy Department data also showed a pickup in US crude production by 152,000 barrels a day, reversing a steady decline that had helped put a floor under world crude prices.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in September finished up 21 cents at $46.79 a barrel. In London trade Brent North Sea crude for October delivery rose 62 cents to $49.85 a barrel compared with the close on Tuesday.US crude stockpiles fell by 2.5 million barrels in the week to August 12, and gasoline stocks fell 2.7 million barrels, pointing to a modest strengthening of US demand. A solid draw to crude stocks, helped in large part by another large draw to the West Coast, has been a supportive element, as has a solid draw to gasoline. Refinery runs hit their highest level for the year to boot, said Matt Smith of ClipperData.Crude prices have been rising since the beginning of the week after comments from both Saudi Arabia and Russia that Moscow could soon join in with the OPEC cartel in discussing production limits.OPEC producers will meet in Algeria in September as the global oversupply continues to hit the budgets of most exporters.Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih last week suggested that discussions could include actions to stabilize prices -- widely seen as a suggestion that OPEC could revive talks on trimming high output levels.Analysts have voiced doubts, however, about a deal being struck. These oil summits have usually ended without an agreement, as was the case at an OPEC meeting earlier this year, said OANDA market analyst Kenny Fisher.Iran, which has returned as a major producer after years of sanctions, scuttled that meeting and is unlikely to be agreeable to any cuts in production, he added.

Dollar weakens as Fed minutes leave markets guessing

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell slightly against the euro and the yen on Wednesday as meeting minutes from the US Federal Reserves July meeting did little to elucidate the future of US monetary policy.Toward 2100 GMT on Wednesday, the euro was at $1.1287, up from $1.1276 the day before, while the dollar had slightly weakened to 100.28 yen, down from 100.30.The pound fell slightly against the dollar to $1.3038, down from $1.3044.An account of deliberations from last month showed Federal Reserve policy makers were keeping their options open but remained divided on the threat of inflation. Joe Manimbo, a currency market analyst at Western Union, said the Fed minutes had left much to the imagination. The minutes from bankers late July meeting offered a mix of hawkish and dovish signals which largely offset, keeping the bar elevated to an imminent rate hike, Manimbo wrote in a note to clients.

Pakistan begin World Cup bid against Ireland

Posted:

MALAHIDE (AFP) - Pakistan launch their quest to make sure of an automatic qualifying spot at the 2019 World Cup in England when they face Ireland in two one-day internationals at Malahide, near Dublin, on Thursday and Saturday. The fixtures, Pakistans lead in to a five-match ODI series against England, come with the 1992 world champions languishing in ninth place in the International Cricket Councils team rankings for the 50-over format.Hosts England and the seven highest-ranked sides in the table come September 30 next year will qualify directly for the World Cup.Meanwhile the bottom four teams in the standings will be joined by six sides from below crickets international elite for a 10-team qualifying competition in 2018.The top two sides from that tournament will complete the 10-strong line-up at the 2019 World Cup.Pakistan are currently seven points behind eighth-placed West Indies. In order to go ahead of the West Indies in the next month, Pakistan will have to win all their matches against non-Test nation Ireland and England, but good results in both series will help them close the gap.For Ireland, currently ranked 12th, a 2-0 series win over Pakistan would see them leapfrog Zimbabwe and Afghanistan into 10th place. Only six of the Pakistan players who took part in the exciting Test series in England -- which they drew 2-2 with a four-day victory at The Oval on Sunday -- stay on for the ODIs, in a 15-man squad captained by Azhar Ali.Ireland are always a tough team, more so in their own conditions, Azhar told AFP. If you look at their recent performances in World Cup matches they have done very well. But we have new players who are very confident, the 31-year-old batsman added. The performance of the Test team is an encouragement for the ODI team so we will carry that same momentum and passion. It was a big challenge for the Test team because a lot of people used to say that we are only good in our own conditions. But the Test team has done well (in England) and the ODI team will take their lead from that.Sami Aslam, Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar are the only specialist batsmen who keep their places from the Test squad along with bowlers Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz and Yasir Shah.We have two very good young spinners in Imad Waseem and Mohammad Nawaz, then we have Yasir and Shoaib Malik so they can be handy, said Azhar.Pakistans one-day squad also features the return of experienced pace bowler Umar Gul.Gul, 32, who played against Ireland in Pakistans shock World Cup defeat back in 2007, has not appeared in 50-over international cricket for 16 months but his experience of English conditions has seen him replace the giant Mohammad Irfan.Ireland were dealt a huge blow on Tuesday with the news that former England pace bowler Boyd Rankin has not only been ruled out of the series but the rest of the season, including the ODIs in Benoni at the end of next month against South Africa and Australia.Rankin suffered a fracture of his left leg when training for Warwickshires ongoing English County Championship game against Surrey.Ireland have decided not to replace Rankin in their 14-man squad, happy with the return of Craig Young following elbow surgery and the impressive ODI debut of Durhams Barry McCarthy in the recent series against Sri Lanka.Thursdays game will be the seventh ODI between the teams. Pakistan have won four, most recently in the final World Cup group game at Adelaide last year by seven wickets when both Ireland captain William Porterfield and Pakistans Sarfraz Ahmed scored centuries.

Mathews hails Herath, Lanka's one-legged hero

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Skipper Angelo Mathews hailed Rangana Herath as Sri Lankas one-legged hero Wednesday after the veteran spinner played through the pain barrier to once again demolish Australias batting line-up.The 38-year-old Herath took seven for 64 in Australias second innings of the third and final Test, finishing with 13 wickets in the match, to confirm his status as the outstanding player of the series. But it was an even more remarkable feat given that he had to retire hurt while batting in Sri Lankas first innings after being struck in the groin while putting on a gritty 33 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC).Herath visibly struggled at times in both the Australian innings in Colombo but such was his value that he remained skipper Angelo Mathews go-to man throughout as he sent down 56 overs. He was fantastic. He was bowling off one leg, Mathews told reporters as he singled out Herath while assessing the reasons behind Sri Lankas first ever clean sweep in a series against a major Test team.He couldnt run and he couldnt jump. He was just landing the ball on one leg and he is unbelievable. The batsmen are having a nightmare facing him no matter how well they play spin. Credit should go to this man. He has been a great team man as well.Herath took a total of 28 wickets in the three Tests, including a match-winning five for 54 in the first match in Pallekele and a hat-trick in the second in Galle. The left-arm spinner has already called it quits in ODI and T20 cricket and has hinted that retirement from Tests is not far away but indicated on Wednesday that he wanted to add to his tally of 332 wickets.Experience counts a lot, every day we learn, Herath said as he accepted his man of the match award.I havent decided anything on Tests, we will go series by series. Hopefully I wish to play next series.Australian skipper Steve Smith, who was dismissed by Herath in both innings in Colombo, acknowledged that he was a class act.Hes a very tough character to face, Smith told reporters.Hes always at you, hes always at your stumps, he changes his pace beautifully and bowls from different parts of the crease, changes his angles up, Smith said. You never really get a freebie off him or an easy boundary....He is a terrific bowler in these conditions and he has had a magnificent series.Smith admitted that Australia, who have now lost their status as number one Test side to India, were comprehensively beaten by the Sri Lankans. We have been outplayed in every facet of the game, said Smith who had been unbeaten as captain before the series. Our plans havent worked as individuals or as a collective group, we havent been able to put Sri Lanka under as much pressure as we would have liked, he added.

US coach terms boxing judging worst since 1988 Olympics

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 17, 2016 (AFP) - Highly respected boxing coach Billy Walsh said Wednesday that the standard of judging at the Rio Olympics was the worst he had seen since the notorious Roy Jones Jr scandal in 1988.Amateur boxings world governing body, the AIBA, says it has dropped an undisclosed number of officials after at least two highly controversial judging decisions in as many days put Olympic boxing in the dock. The Irishman Walsh is a coach for the United States and saw American lightweight Mikaela Mayer suffer defeat on points to a Russian in front of a mostly anti-American crowd on Monday, a decision he branded crazy. The same day a Russian heavyweight was adjudged to have won the gold-medal showdown with a Kazakh when most in the crowd thought otherwise, then on Tuesday an Irish world champion lost to a third Russian boxer.Walsh was pleased to see reigning Olympic middleweight champion Claressa Shields not suffer the same fate to Russias Iaroslava Iakushina: There have been a couple of favourites beaten here already and you can never know with the way things have been going. You can never be sure (of a decision) and that became very evident early on (in Rio).Asked by AFP where the standard of judging in Rio ranked compared to what he had seen at past Olympics, Walsh said: To me its back to where we were in 1988, when Roy Jones got robbed in the final. The final at Seoul 1988 has gone down as the most notorious decision in Olympic boxing history, when judges awarded victory to home fighter Park Si-Hun despite him taking a beating. The scoring system was later changed.Walsh added that he was glad to hear that the AIBA had moved to address the Rio controversy in removing some officials for what the world body called less than a handful of decisions not at the level expected.Shields, the London 2012 middleweight champion, defeated Iakushina in their quarter-final to guarantee at least bronze. She appeared to win comfortably and the judges agreed, giving her a unanimous points win, but the 21-year-old admitted she had been nervous about the verdict given the hullaballoo in the last few days.I saw some pretty bad judging yesterday, especially when people are facing Russia, so it did give me a little scare, but overall the judges cant be God, she said.
