Broad fined for tweet over Hales dismissal

Posted:

LONDON, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - England quick Stuart Broad has been fined by the International Cricket Council after posting a tweet questioning the first-innings dismissal of team-mate Alex Hales during the ongoing fourth Test against Pakistan, the global governing body said Saturday.England opener Hales fell for six on Thursdays first day at The Oval when he clipped Mohammad Amir legside and was caught by Yasir Shah, diving forward.Hales stood his ground, believing the ball had not carried.Umpires Bruce Oxenford and Marais Erasmus called on television official Joel Wilson for assistance. But with available replays inconclusive, the West Indian felt there was not enough evidence to overturn his on-field colleagues original soft signal of out.Hales, who like Broad plays for Midlands county Nottinghamshire, walked off shaking his head and was himself fined Friday after taking the extraordinary action Thursday of going into third umpire Wilsons room and questioning the decision while making what the ICC said were inappropriate comments on his way out.At the time of Thursdays dismissal, Daily Mirror cricket correspondent Dean Wilson tweeted: THAT IS OUT - Hales (6) clips Amir to Yasir at mid-wkt who takes a low catch diving forward. Replays are unclear but umps say out. 23-1.But after Thursdays close of play, Broad -- the son of former England opener turned ICC match referee Chris Broad -- replied via Twitter saying: @CricketMirror replays are unclear? You dont believe that do you?Hales, above a screen grab of the incident that appeared to show the ball touching the grass before Shah claimed the catch, added: @StuartBroad8@CricketMirror bit blurry to be fairMatch referee Richie Richardson, who fined Hales 15 percent of his match fee on Friday for his conduct towards Wilson, hit Broad with a 20 percent fine -- a punishment equating to some 2,000 ($2,586, 2,316 euros) after stumps on Saturdays third day.- Golden rule-================Broad, 30, was found to have contravened the clause in the ICCs code of conduct relating to public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.Explaining his decision, former West Indies captain Richardson said in an ICC statement: One of the most fundamental principles of the sport is to always accept and respect an umpires decision. In this case, Stuart ignored this golden rule and made inappropriate comments in regard to the umpires decision. The charge against Broad was brought by on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Bruce Oxenford, third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth official Rob Bailey. As Broad admitted the offence and accepted the fine, there was no need for a formal hearing.Broad managed modest figures of one for 99 as Pakistan piled up 542 in their first innings on Saturday.Haless miserable match in south London then continued when he was lbw to leg-spinner Shah for 12 in Englands second innings as Pakistan closed in on a win that would see them end the four-match series all square at 2-2.At stumps, England were 88 for four, still 126 runs shy of making Pakistan bat again in the game with two days remaining.

Del Potro edges Rafael Nadal to set up final with Andy Murray

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro will tackle defending champion Andy Murray for Olympic gold Sunday, insisting that his magical Rio run tops his lone Grand Slam triumph at the 2009 US Open. The 27-year-old was on the brink of retiring last year after undergoing a third wrist operation in five years and seeing his ranking drop from four in the world to its current 141.But the 1.98m (6ft 6ins) giant has been rejuvenated in Rio beating world number one Novak Djokovic in the first round before seeing off 2008 Olympic champion Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, (7/5) in an epic three-hour semi-final on Saturday. It means a lot to me. Its very big, maybe even more special than when I won the US Open, said del Potro, who was mobbed by Argentine fans at the end of the semi-final.I didnt expect to get to the final; I didnt expect to beat Djokovic. Its just amazing for me.I am living a dream and the crowd make me cry after every match.Del Potro, a bronze medal winner at the 2012 London Olympics, trails Murray 5-2 in career meetings with his last win coming three years ago.Andy is the favourite, for sure. I am glad with my success so far. I just need to try and be in good shape for the final, he said.Second seed Murray reached his second successive Olympic final with a ruthless 6-1, 6-4 demolition of Japans Kei Nishikori. He insisted hes ready to conquer the challenge of becoming the first player to win back-to-back golds. It would mean a lot to me. Its not easy, thats why its never been done before, but I will go out there and give it my best, said the 29-year-old world number two.I am guaranteed a medal already but the goal is to win gold and Ill do all I can to do it.Saturdays victory allowed Murray to extend his mastery over Nishikori to 7-1 and stretch his current winning streak to a career-best 17 matches.Murray insisted that he will not take Del Potro lightly despite his relative freshness and head-to-head record over the Argentine.Juan Martins played great here and has lots of confidence after beating Novak and he had a great win against Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon, said Murray.Hes getting back to the level he was at before and thats good to see. While Del Potro and Murray battle for gold, Nadal and Nishikori must regroup for the bronze medal match.Victory for Nadal would give him a third Olympic medal to add to his 2008 singles title in Beijing and doubles gold in Rio on Friday alongside Marc Lopez.Injury prevented him from defending his title in London in 2012.It will be Nadals 11th match in Rio and he said he is happy to have got this far having not played a tournament since May when a left wrist injury forced an early withdrawal from the French Open.I am satisfied. I did my best. I fought and with great spirit. After two and a half months without playing, I was able to compete against some of the best players in the world, said the 14-time major winner.

Germany reaches semifinals of Football event in Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 14, 2016 (AFP) - Arsenals Serge Gnabry became the Olympics top scorer as Germany ended Portugals hopes of adding gold to a glorious 2016 with a 4-0 thrashing to reach the Rio 2016 semi-finals on Saturday.Victory takes Germany one step closer to a mouthwatering rematch with hosts Brazil in next Saturdays final two years on from smashing the five-time world champions 7-1 on home soil at the 2014 World Cup.Brazil resume their quest for a maiden football gold medal in a South American grudge match with Colombia in Sao Paulo later on Saturday.Honduras await the winners in the semi-final after stunning South Korea 1-0 thanks to Alberth Eliss brilliantly taken solitary goal decided their clash in Belo Horizonte.Next up for Germany is a semi-final with Nigeria in Salvador on Wednesday after the Africans overcame off-field squabbles over unpaid allowances to beat Denmark 2-0 thanks to goals from Chelseas John Obi Mikel and Aminu Umar.Im not surprised. I have said from the beginning with more games the better we will get as a team, said Gnabry.Horst (Hrubesch) is a super coach. He has prepared us very well. His tactics are very good and you can see he believes in us.The world champions greater experience told with the Portuguese squad ravaged by clubs not releasing players for the Games and a number of their stars from the under-21s having gone onto win Euro 2016 with the senior side in France last month.Germany also exacted revenge for a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Portugal in last years under-21 European championships. After losing 4-0, it is absurd to mention that we fulfilled the task, but in several days, when we see what we did, perhaps we (will) see that we have done good work, said Portugal boss Rui Jorge.Gnabry has been a player reborn in Brazil after a couple of years blighted by injury and lack of first-team opportunities at Arsenal. The 21-year-old scored his sixth goal in four games when he coolly slotted home Julian Brandts inch-perfect pass to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time.Mathias Ginter is the only member of the Germany team who was also part of the World Cup winning squad two years ago and powered home a corner to put the game beyond Portugal just before the hour mark for his second goal of the tournament.Brandt, though, was the Germans standout performer as he teed up Davie Selke and finally Philipp Max to fire into the top corner.Gold medallists in 1996, Nigeria have reached the last four despite organisational chaos off the field. The players had threatened to boycott the quarter-final in Salvador over unpaid allowances, whilst coach Samson Siasia has threatened to quit, claiming he hasnt been paid his salary for the past five months. We have been disrespected from all angles - by the sports ministry, the Nigeria Football Federation. Is that how you will treat your own children? We are not street kids, said Siasia.Nigeria arrived in Brazil just hours before their opening 5-4 win over Japan last week after being stranded for several days at their training base in Atlanta because the Federation hadnt booked flight tickets in advance.Honduras have also upset the odds to reach the last four as after dumping Argentina out at the group stages, they shocked 2012 bronze medallists South Korea when Elis slotted home Romell Quiotos pass to round off a lightening quick counter-attack that started on the edge of the Honduras box.

Manchester City win the opening match of Premier League season

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - Sunderland debutant Paddy McNair scored an 87th-minute own goal to earn Pep Guardiola a 2-1 victory in his first Premier League game as Manchester City manager on Saturday.City took an early lead courtesy of Sergio Agueros penalty, but they failed to make their territorial dominance count and Jermain Defoe looked to have earned Sunderland a point with a second-half equaliser. But with three minutes to play, Jesus Navass right-wing cross was helped on by fellow substitute Kelechi Iheanacho and McNair, who had only come on four minutes earlier, headed the ball into his own net from close range. The Northern Ireland international signed from Citys cross-town rivals Manchester United earlier this week and his unwitting intervention denied David Moyes a creditable point on his bow as Sunderland manager.City finished the opening day joint-top of the table with Hull City -- surprise conquerors of champions Leicester City -- but Guardiola will have been concerned by his players struggles to break Sunderland down. The former Barcelona coach, who started with Willy Caballero in goal in place of Joe Hart, must now prepare his troops for Tuesdays Champions League play-off first leg away to Romanian side Steaua Bucharest.Guardiola awarded full debuts to centre-back John Stones, his 47.5 million pounds ($61 million, 55 million euros) signing from Everton, and Spanish winger Nolito, who lined up on the left.He set his team out in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with full-backs Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy stepping into central midfield and holding player Fernandinho dropping between the centre-backs when City had the ball. But the most eye-catching element of his first competitive team selection was the inclusion of Caballero, usually Citys reserve goalkeeper, instead of Hart.Guardiola cast doubt on Harts City future on Friday, amid reports he wants to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen from his former club Barcelona.- Sucker-punch -================Caballeros distribution was careless, but he made an important early intervention by boxing away a free-kick from Patrick van Aanholt.Van Aanholt was in the spotlight again two minutes later, but at the other end of the pitch, as his rash sliding challenge on Raheem Sterling gave Aguero the opportunity to put City in front from 12 yards.Kevin De Bruyne saw a free-kick fisted clear by Vito Mannone, but despite pinning Sunderland back in their own half, the hosts created few chances from open play.Indeed, had Caballero not produced a smart reaction save to thwart Defoe, Sunderland might have levelled before half-time.With City continuing to toil in the second half, Guardiola made two changes, sending on Navas and Fabian Delph for Nolito and David Silva.Wahbi Khazri and Adnan Januzaj came on for Sunderland, the latter roundly booed as he made his debut following a loan move from Manchester United.Aguero hit a snapshot wide and De Bruyne saw another free-kick repelled by Mannone, before City were hit with a sucker-punch that Guardiola must have feared.Former City midfielder Jack Rodwell was the architect, releasing Defoe with an incisive pass that afforded the one-time England striker time to drill a shot beneath Caballero.Guardiola sent for Iheanacho and within seven minutes of coming on he had a hand in the winning goal as his touch from Navass cross sent the ball cannoning off the hapless McNairs forehead and into the net.

Monica Puig wins Puerto Rico's first ever gold medal in Tennis

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - Monica Puig won Puerto Ricos first ever Olympic gold medal on Saturday when she defeated Germanys Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the womens tennis singles final. The 22-year-old Florida-based Puig defied her ranking of 34 to get the better of the world number two and Australian Open champion on the back of a sizzling 54 winners.Puig, who also knocked out French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the quarter-finals, is the first woman from the Caribbean island to win a medal of any sort. Before her golden breakthrough, Puerto Rico had won just eight Olympic medals, two silver and six bronze. Six of that total had come in boxing.Victory for Puig came in a dramatic seventh game of the final set when she saved six break points before taking gold on a fourth match point when a Kerber forehand sailed wide.Oh my God, she screamed before breaking down in floods of tears and parading her national flag around centre court.Kerber had cruised into the final without dropping a set as the second seed aimed to emulate Steffi Graf who was Germanys last champion at the 1988.However, her perfect record in Rio ended when Puig grabbed the first set against a suddenly lacklustre looking German who required treatment on a back injury between sets. Her medical timeout worked wonders as she broke in the first game of the second set.Puig retrieved the damage in the eighth game but she faltered when she had the chance to serve for a 5-4 lead.Kerber, 28, levelled the final in the 10th game but needed four set points to get the job done. That set the foundation for the thrilling decider where Puig raced into a 5-0 lead before having to suffer for her place in history during a marathon seventh game. She deserved to win, said Kerber, a Wimbledon finalist last month. Its not the medal I wanted but its still a silver. She was hitting everything, she played a great match. Its still a special feeling. I am having the best year of my career. On Friday, after beating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals, Puig had vowed to win gold and bring some light relief to Puerto Rico. The US territory is buried under some $70 billion in debt. There is also a growing concern over the Zika virus, which has spread quickly through the island. In July, US health officials reported that as many as 50 pregnant women per day have been infected, raising the risk of birth defects. Before London in 2012, all of the islands Olympic medals had come in boxing.Four years ago, Jaime Espinal won a wrestling silver while 400m hurdler Javier Culson took home a bronze.Meanwhile, Kvitova won the bronze medal play-off by defeating American seventh seed Madison Keys 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.In an untidy clash, the two women hit a combined 87 unforced errors while Keyss challenge was undone by only converting two of her 10 break points.

Sohrab Moradi wins Iran's second gold medal at Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - Iranian Sohrab Moradi topped the podium in the mens 94kg category on Saturday to claim Irans second weightlifting gold medal of the Rio Games.Moradi, who previously served a two-year ban after testing positive for methadone, dominated the event with a combined total of 403kg.Vadzim Straltsou of Belarus claimed silver on 395 while Lithuanias Aurimas Didzbalis took bronze with 392.The run-up to the competition had been overshadowed by a doping scandal after Polish brothers Adrian and Tomasz Zielinski were both withdrawn for failing drugs tests.Adrian Zielinski, a 2012 Olympic champion, tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone just three days after his brother Tomasz suffered the same fate, Polands anti-doping committee said Friday. The drug was detected as the 27-year-old was gearing up for the 94kg competition in Rio.His brother Tomasz, 25, was also registered for the contest before he also tested positive.Adrian Zielinski, gold medal winner in the 85kg category at the London Olympics, and European champion Tomasz, have denied any wrongdoing. The Zielinskis trained for the Olympics individually, outside the framework established by the Polish federation.Kazakhstans double Olympic champion Ilya Ilyin, who won 94kg gold at London and Beijing, had also been due to bid for a third consecutive title before receiving a ban in June.Disgraced Ilyin, one of weightliftings biggest stars, was caught after samples from London and Beijing were retested.

India thrash West Indies to secure series win

GROS-ISLET, Saint Lucia, Aug 13, 2016 (AFP) - India routed the West Indies to complete a series-clinching victory by the comprehensive margin of 237 runs just before tea on the final day of the third Test in St Lucia on Saturday.West Indies were set the improbable target of 346 to win at the Darren Sammy National Stadium after the Indians declared their second innings at 217 for seven 40 minutes into the days play.Only Darren Bravo with 59 displayed any form of meaningful resistance with the visitors potent mix of pace and spin proving too much for Caribbean batsmen technically and temperamentally ill-equipped to cope with the challenge. And in the end they gave yet another inept batting display, being bowled out for 108, their second-lowest total ever in a Test against India.Seamer Mohammed Shami spearheaded the assault in taking three for 11 but all the bowlers made key contributions in consigning the West Indies to defeat. It not only gave India a 2-0 series lead with one match left in Port of Spain next week, but also represented the first time ever that they had won more than a single Test match in 11 series in the Caribbean dating back to their first visit to the region in 1952.Weve done quite a few firsts in the last year as a Test team, said Indian captain Virat Kohli in acknowledging his teams historic achievement.Credit goes to the entire squad because we recognised where we went wrong in Jamaica and corrected those things here.- Lone bright spot -====================In the lone bright spot for the West Indies on the day, fast-medium bowler Miguel Cummins reaped a bountiful harvest in the morning, taking all four wickets as India pushed for quick runs to facilitate a declaration.Cummins finished with innings figures of six for 48 for a nine-wicket match haul.Ajinkya Rahane kept the runs flowing as the wickets tumbled around him in reaching an unbeaten 78.Frustrated by rain and West Indian defiance in settling for a draw in the second Test, the Indian strike bowlers put the home side immediately on the back foot at the start of their second innings with both openers prised out by the fifth over.Leon Johnson departed without scoring, fending a lifting delivery from Shami into the hands of Rohit Sharma at forward short-leg.His opening partner, Kraigg Brathwaite, fell in the very next over as an inswinger from first-innings destroyer Bhuvneshwar Kumar trapped him leg-before.Ishant Sharma then took two important wickets either side of the lunch interval, uprooting Marlon Samuels off-stump and also comprehensively bowling Roston Chase, the man whose maiden Test hundred on the last day in Kingston was fundamental to the West Indies saving that fixture.Jermaine Blackwoods impetuosity got the better of him when he was stumped off Ravindra Jadeja and the ignominious slide to another embarrassing defeat continued when Shane Dowrich edged Shami to Kohli at second slip.Jason Holders misery as West Indies captain was only magnified when he was run out seeking a non-existent single. Then when Bravo, who battled for almost three hours to hold the innings together, gave a bat-pad catch to Rohit Sharma off Shami to be eighth out, any lingering hope of a miraculous escape for the home side disappeared. Its a tough question. We just need to show a lot more fight, said Holder when queried after the match about the repeated batting failures.Theres no easy way to fix it. The batsmen have to put a higher price on their wickets.Ravichandran Ashwin, named man of the match for his hundred with the bat and contribution with the ball, consigned Alzarri Joseph to the indignity of a pair on debut before Jadeja claimed the final wicket of Shannon Gabriel to trigger the Indian celebrations.
