China power station explosion kills at least 21: state media

BEIJING (AFP) - A pipeline explosion at a power station in China killed at least 21 people and injured five more on Thursday, the official Xinhua news service reported. The blast, which Xinhua said happened in a high-pressure steam pipeline, came a day before the first anniversary of giant explosions that killed at least 165 people in the northern port city of Tianjin. The latest incident occurred at a coal-fired power plant in Dangyang, in the central province of Hubei, and rescue efforts were underway, reports said.A photograph purportedly from the scene showed a bare concrete shell and metal scaffolding standing by a smokestack. The local government said it was investigating the cause.Three people were seriously injured and were being treated in hospital, reports said. Newspapers said the company operating the coal-fired plant was registered for power generation and sales of slag ash and petroleum products. Industrial accidents are common in China, where safety standards are often lax.Earlier this summer more than 130 people were taken to hospital after chemicals leaked from a plant in eastern China. In April a chemical fire burned for 16 hours in the coastal province of Jiangsu after an explosion at a facility storing chemicals and fuel, requiring 400 firefighters to quell the flames. The massive blasts in Tianjin, which caused over $1 billion in damages and killed at least 165, sparked widespread anger over a perceived lack of transparency by officials about the accidents causes and environmental impact.A government inquiry into the Tianjin accident released in February recommended 123 people be punished.

Olympics: Nadal eyes double gold after giving up on mixed

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Rafael Nadal gave up his ambitious dream of an Olympic golden treble Thursday after spending an exhausting four hours on court to reach the singles quarter-finals and mens doubles final. The 30-year-old Spaniard was set to partner French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the mixed but withdrew just moments before they were to face Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek in a first round tie.The effort of downing Gilles Simon in the singles followed just a couple of hours later by teaming with lifelong friend Marc Lopez to beat Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil to make the gold medal doubles match proved too much.Nadal, playing for the first time in two and a half months after a wrist injury forced him out of the French Open, started Thursday staring at a gruelling 10-match schedule in just four days if he was to win three golds. But having already spent eight hours on court this week, followed by four more on Thursday, the 14-time major winner ran out of gas, his plans not helped by all of Wednesdays schedule being washed out.Nadal had hinted that he was unlikely to fullfil his mixed doubles commitments just after seeing off Nestor and Pospisil 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/4) to set-up Fridays gold medal clash against Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau of Romania. When asked if it was possible to win three golds, he replied: No, no, thats impossible. He added: My only priority is that I have a silver medal for sure. For us, its a dream come true. Its time to enjoy it. Im also in the quarter-finals in singles, which is also very important, but I came here not expecting anything, having practised almost zero for the last two months.Nadal, the 2008 Olympic singles champion, defeated French 15th seed Simon 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 and on Friday faces Brazilian number one Thomaz Bellucci who beat Belgian eighth seed David Goffin 7-6 (12/10), 6-4.Andy Murray, the second seed and bidding to be the first player to defend an Olympic singles title, came back from 3-0 down in the deciding set to defeat Italys Fabio Fognini. The Wimbledon champion won 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and will next face American 12th seed Steve Johnson who brushed aside Russias Evgeny Donskoy 6-1, 6-1.But it was an uncomfortable day for the world number two.Murray raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set and was sitting comfortably with a 2-1 advantage in the second. But Fognini then captured eight successive games to lead 3-0 in the third before Murray reclaimed the momentum, reeling off the next six.You have to totally change your technique and your strokes and it throws off your rhythm, your timing, said Murray who hit 48 unforced errors in the swirling conditions.Murray was soon back on court partnering Heather Watson in the mixed doubles after Monica Niculescu and Mergea withdrew. The British pair, silver medallists in London four years ago, made the most of their late call-up, beating David Ferrer and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-3, 6-3.Elsewhere in the mens singles, Japans fourth seed Kei Nishikori eased past Andrej Martin of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2.He next faces flamboyant French shotmaker Gael Monfils who beat 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 6-4.Juan Martin del Potro, who put out world number one Novak Djokovic in the first round, made the last-eight with a 6-7 (4/7), 6-1, 6-2 win over Taro Daniel of Japan to set up a quarter-final with Spains Roberto Bautista Agut.Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova made Fridays womens semi-finals by defeating Elina Svitolina, the conqueror of defending champion and world number one Serena Williams, 6-2, 6-0 in just 48 minutes.Kvitova now faces Monica Puig who beat Germanys Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-1 as she continues her push to be Puerto Ricos first gold medallist.American seventh seed Madison Keys saw off Russias Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-1.She will face second seed and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber who beat Britains Johanna Konta 6-1, 6-2.

Oil prices surge on Saudi minister's talk of 'possible action'

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday after Saudi Arabias energy minister said producers may take action to help rebalance global oil markets. The remarks helped send prices up more than 4 percent in New York, where a barrel of West Texas Intermediate for September delivery closed up $1.78 at $43.49, after having lost more than a dollar the day before. In London, North Sea Brent for October delivery rose $1.99 to $46.04 a barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange.Matt Smith of ClipperData said the whipsawing of prices was crazy.Smith said oil prices had dropped Wednesday after Saudi oil production figures showed the countrys output had risen last month to nearly 11 million barrels per day.But in remarks reported Thursday, Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih said an informal meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) scheduled for next month would be the occasion for producers to discuss any possible action.Saudi Arabias offer to take action was completely at odds with this production data, Smith told AFP.James Williams of WTRG Economics said markets were in an ongoing battle. Its between reality and possibilities, if you will, he told AFP. The reality is the market continues to be oversupplied, with (a) really big increase in Saudi output last month.

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar strengthened against the euro, the yen and the British pound on Thursday as the greenback regained momentum on currency markets.Markets reacted with excitement on Thursday as a Saudi Arabian officials remarks sent oil prices upwards and Wall Street stocks jumped to fresh records.Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih reportedly suggested OPEC producers could agree to cut output next month.Shortly after 1800 GMT, the euro stood at $1.1114, down from $1.1183 at 2100 GMT the day before. The dollar rose to 102.02 yen, up from 101.26, while the pound fell to $1.2959, versus $1.3014 on Wednesday.US economic indicators, which help drive appetite for US currency, have seesawed in recent days, as investors gauge the likelihood of a US interest rate hike.July job creation far surpassed expectations at 255,000 but second quarter productivity was down 0.5 percent.David Song of DailyFX said most US monetary policy makers were likely to hold off on a rate hike.(Federal Reserve) Chair Janet Yellen appears to be in no rush to implement higher borrowing costs, and the data print may largely fail to move the needle for interest rate expectations, said Song.

US stocks surge to records as retail, oil shares gain

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - US stocks scored a hat-trick Thursday, with all three major indices vaulting to records due to strong gains in petroleum-linked shares and retailers. The three-way record, last seen among the leading US indices in 1999, came as European stocks also pushed higher thanks to accommodative central bank policies lending continued support to equities.Traders found inspiration from healthy results by Chinas retail behemoth Alibaba, which reported sales of 32.15 billion yuan ($4.83 billion), 59 percent higher than the level a year ago and above analyst expectations.Alibaba, which trades in New York, jumped 5 percent.US retailers were also upward bound.Shares of Macys surged 17.4 percent after it announced plans to shut 100 of its 728 stores and boost investment in online shopping, seen as a key step to becoming more competitive against Amazon and other rising e-commerce players. Kohls, another leading US retailer, also soared following better-than-expected earnings. The gains helped lift the broad-based S&P 500 0.5 percent to a record 2,185.79. The Dow and Nasdaq scored similar increases in posting records of their own.Paris rose 1.2 percent, Frankfurt 0.9 percent and London 0.7 percent.European markets have been seeing unusual sessions these past few days, IG France analyst Alexandre Baradez said. Volumes are low, and there are few economic data, but theres still a positive impulse.Energy stocks were another outperformer, with Dow members ExxonMobil and Chevron rising along with oil services giants Halliburton and Schlumberger.Oil prices rose after Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih reportedly suggested OPEC producers could agree to cut output next month. Those remarks offset downcast aspects of the International Energy Agencys oil market report, which trimmed the forecast for demand growth in 2017 due to the world economys weaker outlook following Britains vote to leave the European Union. The US benchmark contract, West Texas Intermediate for September delivery, closed up $1.78 at $43.49.The dollar advanced against other major currencies. The gain reflected the possibility that the US Federal Reserve could lift interest rates at a time other central banks are easing, as well as expectations for a strong US retail sales report on Friday, BK Asset Managements Kathy Lien said.

'I wouldn't have picked myself' says century star Ali

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Englands Moeen Ali said he would have dropped himself earlier this season after his hundred left the team well-placed in the fourth Test against Pakistan.Thursdays first day at The Oval saw Ali walk out to bat with England struggling at 110 for five after captain Alastair Cook had won the toss. But Alis 108 helped England to a total of 328 before he was last man out. There was still time before stumps for England, 2-1 up in the four-match series, to remove Sami Aslam, lbw to Stuart Broad and leave Pakistan in trouble at three for one come the close.Ali was named man-of-the-match in the third Test at Edgbaston last week after his two fifties helped set up a 141-run win.But although he made his name in county cricket as a top-order batsman, Ali has found himself deployed by England primarily as their lone specialist spinner. It is not a role he has always enjoyed.Ali took just two wickets during Pakistans 75-run win in the first Test at Lords. That same match also saw the 29-year-old Worcestershire all-rounder give his wicket away in Englands second innings when he was bowled by leg-spinner Yasir Shah after recklessly charging down the pitch.Yet Cook and the England management kept faith with off-spinner Ali.I have to thank the selectors and captain Alastair Cook, because I probably wouldnt have picked myself at that stage, Ali told reporters after stumps. It was fifty-fifty but they stuck with me.At Lords I wasnt on it and I was really embarrassed. That is when I decided to bat properly again, and I have worked on my defence with batting coach Mark Ramprakash. I was sick and tired of not scoring many runs for England; it was a little bit embarrassing.Thursdays innings was the third of Alis Test centuries and the second of his season after his 155 not out against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street in May.I think this was the best of my three Test hundreds. It will mean even more if we can go on and win the match and the series, said left-handed batsman Ali.I feel I have made an impact with the bat and I hope I can do the same with the ball, added Ali, who earlier in the series worked with Saqlain Mushtaq after the former Pakistan off-spinner was brought in by England as a temporary coaching consultant. For Pakistan, this was yet another day where a sloppy fielding display proved costly.Ali should have been out for nine but Azhar Ali dropped a routine slip catch.Meanwhile Jonny Bairstow, who eventually made 55, was caught off a Wahab Riaz no-ball -- one of seven in the innings from the recalled left-arm quick -- on 13.Of course we missed opportunities and good teams do not make mistakes like dropping catches, said Pakistan bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed. But there are four days to go and hopefully we can bat well in our first innings, the former Pakistan leg-spinner added.

Twin blasts in Thai resort town kill one, injure 19

Posted:

BANGKOK (AFP) - Twin blasts in Thailand killed one woman and injured 19 people, including foreigners, late Thursday in the popular seaside resort town of Hua Hin, police said. The two explosions took place thirty minutes apart near bars in the nightlife district of the popular beach town after 10:00 pm (1500 GMT). One Thai woman was killed and altogether from the two bombs 19 people were injured, a local police officer from Hua Hin told AFP.Three are in serious condition and seven of the injured are foreigners -- four women and three men, he said. Reports said the Thai woman killed in the first explosion was a street vendor selling papayas. The two blasts were 50 metres (164 feet) apart, he added. A second local police officer confirmed the bombings and said officials are still investigating a motive and the type of explosives used.Photos published in local press showed emergency workers evacuating victims from the area on stretchers, and some foreign tourists with minor cuts and injuries gathered in a local hospital for treatment. It is common for small blasts to rock Thailand during times of heightened political tension, but there have been few such incidents in the past year and it is rare for tourist destinations to be targeted. Hua Hin is a high-end resort town south of Bangkok that is a popular with both local and foreign tourists. It is also home to a palace for years frequented by Thailands revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the worlds longest reigning monarch. The 88-year-old is currently hospitalised in Bangkok for a myriad of health complications. The bombings hit Hua Hin ahead of a long holiday weekend in the kingdom, with Thais set to celebrate Queen Sirikits birthday on Friday. The blasts also come days before the one-year anniversary of the last major bombing in Thailand, an attack in the capital that killed 20 people on August 17, mostly foreign tourists. The explosive was planted in a popular Hindu shrine in the capital and was the deadliest assault of its kind in recent history.Thai authorities have accused two Uighur men from western China of the bombing. They have both denied involvement in the attack and their trial is set to begin later this month.Thailands military junta, which seized power in 2014 after a decade of at times deadly political unrest, has touted increased stability in the kingdom as a major accomplishment of its rule. But the generals have been unable to quell a festering Islamic insurgency in the three most southern provinces -- nearly 1,000 kilometres away from Hua Hin.The conflict, which is largely contained to the far south region, has blighted the kingdom for over a decade and left over 6,500 people dead.

Croatia spoils Brazil party with 80-76 win in Basketball

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 11, 2016 (AFP) - Bojan Bogdanovic of the NBAs Brooklyn Nets poured in 33 points as Croatia spoiled the party for hosts Brazil with an 80-76 win in Olympic basketball on Thursday.Brazil was hoping to build on their thrilling upset of world number two Spain two days earlier that threw the tournaments Group B wide open. But Bogdanovic proved too much for the Brazilian defence, continually marauding into the paint and making Brazil pay when they fouled him, going 10-of-11 at the line. For me its not something that surprises me, Croatian power forward Dario Saric, who will soon join the NBAs Philadelphia 76ers, said after the win. This Croatian team have power, talent and energy to play, and we are young. I think we can play with everybody except America. The USAs team of NBA stars is heavily favoured to win the tournament for the third straight Olympics and opened by routing China and Venezuela by a combined 101 points. But Australia gave them a run for their money on Wednesday, briefly holding a fourth-quarter lead and making the Americans work for a 98-88 win that is likely to hearten other USA opponents.Brazil came in to the game against Croatia on a high after their emotional last-second victory over Group B favourites Spain on Tuesday.Croatia led by as much as 14 deep into the third period but Brazil made it 75-72 with back-to-back three-pointers by Alex Garcia and Guilherme Giovannoni with just over a minute left that had the raucous home crowd smelling another win.But Brazil never got closer as the two sides traded fouls down the stretch.Leandro Barbosa led Brazilian scorers with 16.The result leaves Croatia at 2-1, and Brazil at 1-2.Later on Thursday, Spain will look to get back on track against winless Nigeria, and Argentina faces Lithuania with both teams seeking to go 3-0.

Bangladesh's Fizz has shoulder operation

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs Mustafizur Rahman had shoulder surgery in London on Thursday, but officials said the bowling sensation will remain off the pitch for at least four months. The promising young paceman, nicknamed Fizz, aggravated an old shoulder injury last month during his short stint with Sussex in the ongoing Twenty20 Blast competition, playing two matches before being sidelined. The operation was successful and we are now wishing him a quick recovery, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Jalal Yunus told AFP after the hour-long operation. He will spend the night at the hospital today (Thursday) and will be released in the morning, he added.Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, an avid cricket fan, called the 20-year-old left-arm bowler before the surgery to wish him good luck and a speedy recovery, state-run news agency BSS reported. Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza also called to wish him well. BCB officials have said Rahman will remain sidelined for four to five months following the operation on his shoulder, first injured during a match against Zimbabwe in November last year. The injury, a tear in his bowling shoulder, had already ruled him out of the upcoming home series against England and he is also unlikely to play in Bangladeshs next away series against New Zealand in December-January.
