Pakistan, England second ODI today

Posted:

LONDON (Dunya News) – The second one-day international of the five-match series between Pakistan and England will be played today (Saturday) at Lord’s. The match will start at 2:30pm (PST).After beating Pakistan convincingly in the first ODI in Southampton, it is unlikely that England will make any changes in their winning combination, despite Alex Hales lack of runs at the top of the order. On the other hand, Pakistan will need to strengthen their bowling and that might open up a place for Yasir Shah, who took 10 wickets in the Test match at this venue. If hes included, it might come at the expense of one of the two left-arm orthodox all-rounders. Sami Aslam impressed during the Tests and he might get a look-in, at the expense of the struggling Mohammad Hafeez. The hosts have been playing like a well-oiled machine and have few areas of concern at the moment. Jason Roy has hit an impressive patch of run scoring, while the likes of Joe Root and skipper Eoin Morgan have been consistent. Add the host of all-rounders in the middle-order, England have a batting depth thats hardly matched by any other team. Opening batsman Alex Hales hasnt found form this summer, but hes expected to be given a decent run, considering his match-winning abilities. If the batting looks primed, the return of Mark Wood to the international fold after 10 months has beefed up the bowling attack. The pacer hit speeds in excess of 90 mph and has promised more pace as the series progresses. Giving him company in the pace department is Yorkshires Liam Plunkett, Warwickshires Chris Woakes and Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes. Add the spin twins - Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, the hosts have a potent yet balanced bowling line-up.On the other hand, Pakistan have failed to find the balance between bat and ball. Sharjeel Khan, who followed his blistering 152 against Ireland with a less than impressive 16 in the first ODI, has been backed to provide explosive starts for the visitors. Azhar Ali top-scored with a 110-ball 82, but was frank in his admission that his batsmen shouldnt have played the number of dot balls they did. Mohammad Hafeez is lacking in confidence after a modest Test series while Shoaib Malik seems confused over his exact role in the side. The 21-year old Babar Azam has been the shining light of the Pakistan middle-order in recent times, showing immense potential. While the batting looks polished without the sparkle, its the under-par performance of the bowlers that came under scrutiny in Southampton. Mohammad Amir was listless at times, Umar Gul looked rusty and the two left-arm tweakers, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz looked average.

Top Kenyan Olympic committee official arrested

Posted:

NAIROBI (AFP) - Kenyan police on Friday arrested the secretary-general of the countrys Olympic committee (NOCK) in the wake of a series of scandals and embarrassments at the Rio Games. Its true Francis Paul has been arrested over the Olympics issues, said a police source who wished to remain anonymous. It is part of investigations into the Rio scandal on the mismanagement of the whole Games for the Kenyan team and the misappropriation of kits.Kenyas Sport Minister Hassan Wario had on Thursday announced the disbanding of the countrys Olympic committee with immediate effect.Wario, who was questioned on Wednesday by detectives investigating allegations of corruption and mismanagement relating to Kenyas Olympics performance, said facilities management parastatal Sports Kenya would take over responsibility and organise fresh elections to the Olympic committee.Wario blamed NOCK for the troubles, mishaps and mishandling of the accreditation that -- among other problems -- tarnished Kenyas Olympics. Francis, however, responded that the Olympics shambles was the responsibility of the government. The blame game follows an embarrassing performance by Kenyan officials even as the countrys athletes clocked up their best Olympics yet with 13 medals (including six golds) putting them in 15th place overall, the best in Africa by far.

Wayne Rooney praises new manager Jose Mourinho's method

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes new manager Jose Mourinhos methods are already bearing fruit ahead of his sides Premier League trip to Hull City on Saturday.United have won their two opening games, against Bournemouth and Southampton, and go into the weekend level on points with Manchester City, Chelsea and, unexpectedly, Hull at the head of the table.Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored four goals in three games and with world-record returnee Paul Pogba impressing in the 2-0 win over Southampton, Rooney feels United have hit the ground running. We, as players, have to adapt to what the manager wants us to do in our preparations throughout the week and, on match-days, we try to take the game plan of the manager onto the pitch, he told MUTV.Its what weve tried to do and, fortunately, weve started the season well. Weve prepared well this week so were hoping that continues. The signings weve made this season have been really good signings. Theyve settled in really quickly and youve seen the impact theyve had on the pitch already. While City, United and Chelseas presence in the top four gives the lead places in the Premier League standings a familiar look, Hulls strong start to the season has surprised everyone. After Steve Bruce quit as manager and Hull were left with only 13 senior players, the East Yorkshire club were installed as the bookmakers favourites to go down. But they defied the odds to stun champions Leicester City 2-1 on the seasons opening day and followed that up with a 2-0 success at Swansea City. One of Bruces principle reasons for leaving was frustration over the clubs lack of transfer activity and caretaker coach Mike Phelan says there will be no new faces on show at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday. Its the same old, same old, said Phelan, who spent 20 years at United as a player, coach and assistant manager under Alex Ferguson.Nobody has yet come into the building. We havent signed any new players. We are in talks with two or three new players.Weve set our stall out and are pursuing interests, but at the moment nothing has been delivered. The identity of the man between the posts for Manchester City will be a hot topic once again on Sunday when Pep Guardiolas side welcome West Ham United to the Etihad Stadium.Claudio Bravo has completed his move from Barcelona for a reported initial fee of 13.75 million pounds ($18.2 million, 16.1 million euros). But with the Chile international having only just arrived, Guardiola is expected to restore Willy Caballero to his starting XI, which means Joe Hart will drop to the bench.Hart was hailed by Citys fans during Wednesdays 1-0 Champions League win over Steaua Bucharest, but with youngster Angus Gunn also pushing for a place, Guardiola cannot even guarantee him a spot on the bench. If all four stay here, the best solution is for everybody to be involved in our idea, Guardiola said. They are going to be in rotation, part of that. So (if) Joe, Willy and Angus stay, then it wont be the same one who is always on the bench.Chelsea will look to pursue their renaissance under former Juventus and Italy manager Antonio Conte when they entertain Burnley at Stamford Bridge.Burnley stunned Liverpool 2-0 at Turf Moor last weekend, despite seeing less than 20 percent of the ball, only to then crash to a woeful League Cup exit at fourth-tier Accrington Stanley. At White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur host Liverpool in a clash between two clubs hoping to gatecrash the Manchester duopoly at the top of the table. Both teams have consistency in the squad. There are of course new players, but not too many changes, said Jurgen Klopp, whose tenure as Liverpool manager began with a 0-0 draw at Spurs last October. It will be exciting what will happen there.Arsenal, meanwhile, visit Watford.Arsene Wengers men remain without a win after two games, but fans have been placated by moves for Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi and Spanish striker Lucas Perez.FixturesSaturday (1400 GMT unless otherwise stated)Chelsea v Burnley, Crystal Palace v Bournemouth, Everton v Stoke City, Hull City v Manchester United (1630 GMT), Leicester City v Swansea City, Southampton v Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool (1130 GMT), Watford v Arsenal

SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship splashes down in Pacific

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - SpaceXs unmanned Dragon cargo ship splashed down Friday in the Pacific Ocean, returning a load of NASA research from the International Space Station, the US space agency said. The capsule returned to Earth at 11:47 am (1547 GMT) southwest of the Mexican state of Baja California with more than 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) of cargo. Some of the experiments conducted on board should enable scientists to better understand the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body, as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration works toward its goal of sending people to Mars by the 2030s.One examined how microgravity affects human heart cells, while another used lab mice to study how spaceflight affects DNA.The return of the spacecraft caps the ninth resupply mission for the California-based SpaceX under a contract to ferry goods to the astronauts living at the ISS. The Dragon launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, last month and arrived at the space station July 20, carrying the first of two docking adaptors to allow commercial spacecraft to park at the space station in the coming years.SpaceXs Dragon is the only cargo carrier in use that can return gear to Earth. Others, such as Orbital ATKs Cygnus, burn up on re-entry to Earths atmosphere.

US, Russia move closer to new Syria ceasefire after talks

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - Washington and Moscow made key steps towards agreeing a new ceasefire in Syria, but a final deal has not been reached, US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart said after talks Friday. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the comments after the marathon talks at a luxury hotel on the shores of Lake Geneva. Today I can say that we achieved clarity on the path forward for a revamped cessation of hostilities, the top US diplomat said.He added that the vast majority of technical obstacles to a ceasefire had been agreed but that some issues remained unresolved. Lavrov echoed his American counterpart, telling reporters that very important steps had been made on a deal to stop the violence. There had been hopes of a definitive announcement to stem the fighting in the war-ravaged country or on a new round of UN-brokered peace talks. Kerry explained that US and Russian experts would continue to meet in Geneva in the coming days to pour over a set of unresolved issues in hopes of striking a durable deal. He stressed though that neither of us is (ready) to make an announcement that is predicated by failure -- we dont want to have a deal for the sake of a deal. A previous ceasefire agreed earlier this year has all but collapsed, and Kerry acknowledged that violations (of the deal) eventually became the norm rather than the exception.Moscow and Washington support opposite sides in the Syrian conflict, which erupted in March 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad unleashed a brutal crackdown against a pro-democracy revolt. Russia is one of Assads most important international backers while the US supports Syrias main opposition alliance and some rebels.Kerry on Friday listed two main priorities to ensure that a prospective revamped ceasefire holds: responding to ceasefire violations by the Damascus regime and checking the rising influence of the former Al-Nusra Front. That group has renamed itself Fateh al-Sham Front after renouncing its status as Al-Qaedas Syrian affiliate, but Kerry on Friday stressed that Nusra is Al-Qaeda, and no name change by Nusra hides what Nusra really is and what it tries to do.The two diplomats met on and off for nearly 12 hours and were briefly joined by the UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, who had said Thursday hoped the talks would help his drive to revive the stalled negotiations.Successive rounds of negotiations have failed to end a conflict that has killed more than 290,000 people and forced millions from their homes in more than five years.De Mistura had voiced hope of bringing the warring parties back to the negotiating table by the end of August, but that deadline looks sure to slip in the face of intense fighting on the ground. Both Kerry and Lavrov stressed the need for fresh talks to find a political solution to the crisis. The US envoy voiced hope that installing a real ceasefire could open the window of opportunity for us to be able to get to the table here in Geneva, and have a real negotiation about the future. The US and Russia co-chair a UN-backed humanitarian taskforce for Syria, which has been struggling to ensure access for desperately-needed aid across the country. The UN on Friday described the lack of humanitarian access to Syrias besieged areas as wholly unacceptable, saying just one aid convoy had completed deliveries this month. Syrias battered second city Aleppo, which is divided between government and opposition control but surrounded by loyalist forces, has emerged as a top concern. Russia last week gave its blessing to a long-demanded 48-hour pause in fighting in the northern city to allow in aid, but de Mistura on Thursday accused other unspecified parties of still dragging their feet. There was hope that Fridays talks between Kerry and Lavrov might help boost those efforts, but no specific pledges on the iconic Aleppo were made.

Tennis: Djokovic, Nadal drawn for potential US Open semi-final clash

NEW YORK (AFP) - Defending champion Novak Djokovic and fellow two-time winner Rafael Nadal were drawn for a potential US Open semi-final clash on Friday.Djokovic, the top seed who has been nursing a wrist injury since a shock first round loss at the Olympics, begins his campaign against big-serving Jerzy Janowicz of Poland.Janowicz, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2013, has been plagued by knee trouble in recent months and has seen his ranking slump to 228 in the world.Fourth seed Nadal, a gold medallist at the Olympics in doubles after missing Wimbledon due to a left wrist injury, faces Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in his first round match.Second seed and Olympic champion Andy Murray, the 2012 winner, starts against Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic. The two clashed in an angry match in Munich last year where Murray described Rosol as one of the most hated players on the tour. With Roger Federer missing the tournament due to a knee injury which has shut down his season, fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka takes the third seeding.Wawrinka begins against Spains Fernando Verdasco and could face fiery Australian Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16.Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 champion and Olympic silver medallist, looms large as a potentially dangerous last-eight opponent for Wawrinka. The giant Argentine knocked Wawrinka out of Wimbledon this year.In the womens draw, Serena Williams, bidding for a seventh US Open title and a modern era record 23rd Grand Slam, begins her campaign against experienced Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.Makarova, the world number 36, reached the semi-finals in 2014, losing to the American in straight sets. But she beat Williams in the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2012.Williams, 34, comes into the US Open after suffering a shoulder injury which forced her out of the Cincinnati event last week.Williams lost in the semi-finals to Roberta Vinci 12 months ago in New York.Adding extra spice to the event is the possibility for her to break Steffi Grafs record of 186 consecutive weeks atop the world rankings, and surpass Chris Evert for most US Open singles titles won in the Open Era.Second seed Angelique Kerber, the Australian Open champion, starts against Slovenias Polona Hercog.Third seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain, the reigning French Open champion, and fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland start against qualifiers.Fifth seed Simona Halep of Romania meets Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium in the first round. Halep and Williams could meet in the quarter-finals.Earlier Friday, Americas world number 25 Sloane Stephens withdrew from the US Open with a right foot injury. The 23-year-olds withdrawal saw Olympic champion Monica Puig of Puerto Rico move into the 32nd seed position.Stephens, who made the fourth round in New York in 2013, had been on a poor run of form in recent weeks.Since exiting Wimbledon in the third round, Stephens lost three consecutive first rounds at Washington, Montreal and the Olympics. This years US Open is missing both Victoria Azarenka who is pregnant and former champion Maria Sharapova who is serving a doping suspension.

Tennis: 'Big Four' in no mood to cede power

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal insisted Friday that they have no intention of loosening their grip on power despite the sports Big Four slipping into the twilight of their careers.Murray, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have carved up 46 of the last 53 majors between them. The physical cracks are starting to show -- Djokovic and Nadal have been bothered by wrist problems in recent weeks while 35-year-old Federer has shut down his 2016 season due to a knee injury. But Murray, described by top 10 rival Kei Nishikori as Ironman for his battling run to the Olympic Games gold medal in Rio, says that at 29 years old, he is using his age as a motivating factor.Id imagine Id be playing at this level for three, four more years, max, said Murray, the holder of three Grand Slam titles. Its not easy to do that. I hope Im still playing like this when Im 38 years old, but its pretty unlikely. Im actually using that as a positive that you have to make the most of every opportunity. Its a slightly different mentality to maybe when youre younger and like you feel like you have a bit more time on your side. I want to make the most of every tournament I play in and try and win and achieve as much as I can the next few years.Nadal, a year older than both Djokovic and Murray at 30, has endured a catalogue of injury woes throughout his career, mostly involving his knees and wrists. His most recent left wrist problem forced a withdrawal midway through the French Open, kept him out of Wimbledon and prevented even practicing for two and a half months. But the Spaniard then went on a marathon run at the Olympics where he lost in the semi-finals of the singles but won gold in the mens doubles. The Big Four are getting older. But still Novak is No. 1, Andy No. 2, said 14-time major winner Nadal.I got injured, but before the injury I was third in the race (for the Tour finals) and not very far from No. 2. Its obvious that we will not be here forever but I think I can play to the level I had before my injury for the next three, four years.Djokovic, with 12 majors, believes that he remains at the peak of his powers despite a shock third round loss at Wimbledon at the hands of Sam Querrey, his earliest exit at a Slam in seven years. His win at the French Open in June allowed him to join Federer and Nadal as one of the few men to complete the career Grand Slam of all four majors.Im 29 and believe that Im at a peak of my abilities as a tennis player, said the Serb.Ill try to keep that peak as consistent and enduring as much as possible.

Golf: Reed takes lead at Barclays

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Patrick Reed edged into a two-shot lead at The Barclays Championship on Friday, firing a three-under-par 68 to take a slender advantage into the weekend action.World number 14 Reed had looked to be on course to take a bigger lead over the chasing pack but two bogeys in the final three holes at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale jolted his momentum.Overnight leader Reed had earlier started in blistering form, opening with back-to-back birdies to quickly move to seven under for the tournament. Two more birdies on the fourth and seventh left him at nine under before a bogey at the par-three eighth pegged him back.Reed steadied the ship with three straight pars followed by a birdie on 13 followed by two more pars.A missed five-footer on the 16th led to a bogey before a brilliant tee-shot on the par-three 17th left him inches for the hole for a simple birdie. But a wayward approach on the 18th found a bunker and Reeds recovery left him with a 24-footer to save par which came up short.Reed leads Emiliano Grillo of Argentina and Rickie Fowler by two.Grillo followed up his opening 67 with a 69, a round that could have looked a lot better had it not been for a bogey on the ninth and a double-bogey on 10.Fowler meanwhile fired a bogey-free two-under-par 69, with two birdies and 16 pars to be at six under for the tournament. One back was Ryan Moore, who shot a three-under-par 68 comprised of five birdies and two bogeys following his opening 69.Australias world number one Jason Day and Jordan Spieth were in a group of five players tied for fifth on four under.Day shot a one-under-par 70 while Spieth, disappointed with an even-par 71 on Thursday, shot four birdies and an eagle to get back on track. A double bogey on 10 limited his advance however.Scotlands Martin Laird, who had shared the lead with Reed after the first round, drifted off the pace with a one-over-par 72.Northern Irelands Rory McIlroy will need to produce a major charge over the weekend after a round which had threatened to leave him within striking distance.McIlroy finished the day at two under, consecutive bogeys on the 15th and 16th thwarting his charge as he finished with a two-under-par 69.It was nice to get to minus four, the wind wasnt as bad and the course was playing a little easier, McIlroy said. If there was any day to make a good score today was it, he added. Its been a little stop-start. Just when I feel like Im getting momentum I get stopped in my tracks a bit.

Formula One: Verstappen on top in Red Bull one-two

Posted:

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS (AFP) - Dutch teenager Max Verstappen delighted his army of fans in the forests of the Ardennes on Friday afternoon when he topped the times in second free practice for this weekends Belgian Grand Prix. The 18-year-old Red Bull driver, who was born 50 kilometres away from the sprawling and majestic Spa-Francorchamps circuit at Hasselt in Belgium, clocked a best lap of one minute and 48.085 seconds. That allowed him to outpace Australian team-mate Daniel Ricciardo by two-tenths as the Renault-powered outfit delivered a strong one-two showing. It was the third time in Verstappens brief Formula One career that he had topped the session times and did so in front of thousands of supporters camping under the trees in the unexpected heat-wave conditions.German Nico Huelkenberg was third-fastest for Force India ahead of his compatriot Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, Mexican Sergio Perez in the second Force India and championship contender Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.Rosberg had been fastest in a Mercedes one-two ahead of championship leader and defending champion Lewis Hamilton in the morning session, but both men concentrated on preparation for the race with long runs on medium tyres.Hamilton, as he had in the morning, had a new power unit installed and will face a massive grid penalty for the race along with several other penalised drivers including two-time champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren Honda.Finn Kimi Raikkonen, newly married during the month-long European summer break, was seventh in the second Ferrari ahead of Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Haas, Briton Jenson Button of McLaren and Mexican Esteban Gutierrez in the second Haas.Hamilton, clearly focused on his race rather than qualifying, was 13th, one place behind Alonso, who was 12th for McLaren having missed out on the morning session due to a water leak. The team was forced to change his power unit and install a new one, which led to him taking a grid penalty. Both Rosberg, who trails Hamilton by 19 points in the title race with nine races remaining, and Hamilton were given new Mercedes power-units for the opening free session, a move that the team confirmed will bring Hamilton at least a 15-place penalty on the grid. After taking a second power unit for the second session, Hamilton is expected to have another installed for third practice on Saturday morning, actions that may lead to him taking an overall record grid penalty of 75 places.A series of engine failures early in the year meant Hamilton quickly reached the limit of new parts he is allowed for the season while Rosberg, who won the opening four races without problems, is within the limits.Mercedes policy is aimed to be as fair as possible to both drivers and to give Hamilton sufficient new parts to last for the rest of the season with all of his penalties served at one race.
