Sania Mirza and Hingis to clash in final right after splitting

Posted:

CINCINNATI, Aug 21, 2016 (AFP) - The former number one doubles pair of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza, who split earlier this season, will face off on Sunday for the trophy at the WTA Tours Cincinnati event.Switzerlands Hingis and new American partner CoCo Vandeweghe booked their spot with a 6-1, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded German Julia Goerges and Sundays singles finalist Karolina Pliskova, while seventh-seeded Mirza, of India, teamed with Czech Barbora Strycova for a 6-2, 7-5 win over the second-seeded Taiwan pair of Chan Hao-Ching and Chan Yung-Jan.Hingis, who combined with Timea Bacsinszky to win silver in the Rio doubles for Switzerland after losing in the final to Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina of Russia, split with Indias top sportswoman after a Toronto quarter-final loss in late July.Although the pair are no longer together, they will still play the year-end WTA event for which they have qualified in Singapore in October. The team started out in 2015 and won their first three tournaments before capturing the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open titles as well as this years Australian Open. They achieved 11 WTA titles together.A 41-match win streak ended in Qatar this year and they lost in the fourth round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon quarter-finals.Hingis and Vandeweghe actually took to the court together for the first time on Saturday after two walkovers this week at the rain-plagued Cincinnati tournament. Mirza and Strycova have won all four of their matches in straight sets.

22 killed in attack at a wedding in Turkey

ANKARA, Aug 21, 2016 (AFP) - At least 22 people were killed and dozens more wounded late Saturday in an attack possibly carried out by a suicide bomber on a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border, officials said. The explosion is the latest attack to have rocked the key NATO member in a horrific year that has seen a string of strikes blamed on Kurdish and Islamist militants as well as a bloody July 15 botched coup. The office of Gaziantep governor Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement that 22 people had been killed and 94 wounded in a bomb attack on a wedding. We condemn the traitors who organised and carried out this attack, it said.Yerlikaya had earlier said the the explosion in the centre of the southeastern city was due to a abhorrent terror attack, state-run news agency Anadolu reported.Mehmet Erdogan, a ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) lawmaker for Gaziantep said it was not clear who was responsible for the explosion but there was a high possibility it was a suicide attack. The lawmaker added that it was the type of attack that could have been launched by the Islamic State (IS) group or the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).- IS the culprit -====================The explosion took place in the Sahinbey district of the city which is said to have a large number of Kurdish residents, fuelling speculation of jihadist involvement. Reports said the wedding had a strong Kurdish presence.Initial information suggests it is Daesh (IS) who did this, says Gaziantep MP for the AKP, Samil Tayyar, Dogan news agency said.He added: It is an area where many of our Kurdish brothers live. The pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) said its members had been present at the wedding which was also attended by many women and children. The aim of terror is to scare the people but we will not allow this, said Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek, who also represents Gaziantep in the Turkish parliament. It is barbaric to attack a wedding, he told Turkish television, adding that a suicide bombing was the likely cause.A major city lying just 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the Syrian border, Gaziantep has become a hub for Syrians fleeing the civil war in their country. But as well as refugees and opposition activists, there have long been fears it was home to a significant jihadist presence.Turkey has already been hit by a bloody year of militant attacks in its two biggest cities that have left dozens dead.Kurdish militants have twice struck in Ankara in deadly attacks, while IS suicide bombers have twice killed tourists in the centre of Istanbul.Meanwhile the country is still reeling from a failed July 15 coup blamed on the US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen that has been followed by a relentless purge of his supporters from all state institutions.Twelve people were killed on Thursday in a spate of bombings against Turkish security forces blamed on the PKK who appear to have ramped up their campaign of attacks in the aftermath of the failed coup.As has been the case in previous attacks, Turkeys broadcasting regulator RTUK banned broadcast of footage from the scene of the attack in Gaziantep.- More active Turkey -========================The blast in Gaziantep came on the day Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim vowed Ankara would play a more active role in the next six months in efforts to solve the over five-year Syrian civil war.In a sign that Turkeys position was becoming gradually more aligned with Russia and Iran, he added that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could remain temporarily during a transition period.Iran and Russia are the main allies of Assad whereas Turkey has always insisted his exit was a precondition for the end of the conflict.Turkey was long accused of turning a blind eye to or even abetting the rise of IS in Syria, claims it vehemently denies. However Western states say Ankara has begun to move strongly against the group and seal its borders to jihadist traffic after the attacks blamed on IS on its soil this year.

Antonio Conte happy with Chelsea's spirited comeback

Posted:

WATFORD, United Kingdom, Aug 20, 2016 (AFP) - Chelsea manager Antonio Conte praised the commitment and focus of his players after their 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.Late goals by Michy Batshuayi, his first for the club, and Diego Costa gave Chelsea three points that seemed unlikely when Etienne Capoue put Watford ahead early in the second half on Saturday.Chelsea were second-best for the first 70 minutes, but Conte sent on Batshuayi and then Cesc Fabregas and the former scored while the latter had a hand in both goals. It was the second successive match in which Costa has scored a late winner after his decider against West Ham United last Monday and Conte took heart from his teams battling comeback. In these two games we have seen the right spirit, the right commitment, Conte said. After a bad season like last years, its not easy to start in a good way and win games, and it wont be easy, so we must know that we have to continue. Its important to change the situation compared to last season and we are trying to do that with all our strength.Yes, the subs had a good impact but I think its normal when you push for 70 minutes, the opposition pays for the effort it has put in, and when the new players come on, there is an impact.Conte agreed that his intense fitness regime, which has included double sessions in pre-season, has paid off in Chelseas ability to perform strongly late in games.I believe that work pays and always pays, he said. Its important. We are working very hard and we will continue to. And wins like this are very important to improve confidence and trust in the work.- Commitment -==============Contes decision not to start Fabregas in either of this seasons Premier League matches has been seen as a sign that the Spain midfielder may not be part of his long-term plans, but Conte praised the former Arsenal and Barcelona star.We all know Cesc is a great technical player with a good pass and good assists and I made this substitution because I wanted more quality, Conte said.Cesc is working very hard to show me that he deserves to play and I want to see this - all the players showing me that they deserve to start the game and if I see this commitment Im a very happy manager. That all the players think of the team, not himself, is important. And that is happening in Chelsea.Costa was in the bad books of the opposing fans as usual, this time for a challenge on Capoue that ended the Watford mans afternoon. But Conte defended the volatile Spain forward, saying: He scored two goals but Id have preferred him to score them earlier.Diego is working hard like the other players but he can improve a lot. Hes an important player for us and he had to stay concentrating in the game.Watford manager Walter Mazzarri, an old adversary of Contes from Italys Serie A, chose to look on the bright side after a frustrating result. We played better than at Southampton last week, he said. Then we played only 20 minutes as I wanted us to play, today we played good football for 70 minutes. We can hold our heads high. But in Italy wed say that we complicated our own lives. Both goals were our errors. The value of the Chelsea players you can see for yourself but I would have preferred to concede two goals through their great qualities than our own mistakes.

Neymar converts final penalty as Brazil beat Germany in Olympics final

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 21, 2016 (AFP) - Neymar struck the winning penalty as Brazil claimed a first ever Olympic football gold medal with victory over Germany on penalties at Rios Maracana on Saturday. The 5-4 shoot-out win exacted revenge for a humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany two years ago.Olympic gold was the only major title to have escaped five-time world champions Brazil in their history. But Barcelona star Neymar righted that historical wrong as he fired the winning penalty into the top corner before breaking into tears. This is one of the best things that have happened in my life, said Neymar, who was heavily criticised for his underwhelming start to the Olympics. Now theyll (the critics) have to swallow what they said.In front of the biggest crowd of Rios Games, including nine-time Jamaican gold medallist Usain Bolt, Neymars brilliant free-kick handed Brazil a first-half lead.In honour of the retiring sprinting great, Neymar even adopted the lightning bolt celebration, whilst chants of ole, ole, ole, Neymar rang around Rios most iconic arena. However, Germany captain Max Meyer enjoyed a special celebration of his own as he taunted the raucous 78,000 crowd at the Maracana by kissing the number seven on his shirt when he swept home Jeremy Toljans cross just before the hour mark. The first eight penalties in the shootout were all successful before Brazil goalkeeper Weverton stopped Nils Petersens effort to set the stage for Neymar. And he didnt disappoint as, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders, he rifled the ball into the top corner.I told Neymar that God had given him a second chance. God loves Neymar like he loves all this team, said Weverton. In stark contrast to the empty seats on show across the Games, even for some of Bolts marquee races, there wasnt a seat to be had at the Maracana -- where Germany won the World Cup against Lionel Messis Argentina two years ago. However, it was for the 7-1 mauling in Belo Horizonte five days previously that Brazil were seeking revenge.None of the players that took to the field that day started on Saturday.Neymar missed the darkest day in Brazils football history due to two broken bones in his back suffered during a bruising quarter-final win over Colombia.Yet, the good fortune that escaped Brazil on home soil two years ago was certainly with them in the first-half as Germany were desperately unlucky to go in behind at the break.Julian Brandts fine curling effort came back off the bar, whilst Sven Bender also hit the woodwork from close range. In between times, Neymar had opened the scoring via the bar with a sumptuous dipping effort from 25 yards for his third goal of the tournament.Weverton made a fine save from Meyer and Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos was fortunate when his mishit clearance flew inches over his own crossbar. However, Weverton was beaten for the first time in the competition just before the hour mark when Meyer swept home Toljans low cross.Brazil piled on the pressure in the final half hour of normal time as Gabriel Jesus turned Renato Augustos dangerous cross just wide, substitute Felipe Anderson fluffed his lines and Neymars effort from distance flew just off target. The hosts had the better chances in extra-time too as Luan burst clear only to see his shot blocked before Anderson was denied when one-on-one with Horn.Thankfully for Rogerio Micales men they were far more clinical from the spot as Augusto, Marquinhos, Rafinha and Luan all netted to hand Neymar the chance to live up to his billing as the hosts poster boy for the Games.

Third day of fourth test between India and West Indies washed out

Posted:

PORT OF SPAIN, Aug 20, 2016 (AFP) - Inadequate ground drainage and maintenance systems resulted in the abandonment of the third day without a ball being bowled in the fourth and final Test between the West Indies and India at the Queens Park Oval on Saturday. No play has been possible since the first day on Thursday in Trinidad when the West Indies reached 62 for two before lunch after choosing to bat first.Since then, heavy showers on Thursday afternoon have left the ground completely saturated.Despite the best efforts of the ground staff, conditions did not improve satisfactorily on the third day for play to be possible in the morning session.Notwithstanding bright sunshine, the outfield remained sodden in many areas around the square.Showers returned at midday to eliminate any prospect of play later in the day. With this match seemingly destined for a draw, India, despite a 2-0 lead in the series, will lose their number one ranking in Test cricket to arch rivals Pakistan.India need to win the series 3-0 to retain the top position in the rankings following Pakistans 2-2 series draw in England.

Park wins first women's golf gold medal at Olympics in 116 years

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 20, 2016 (AFP) - South Koreas Park In-Bee won the first womens Olympic golf title in 116 years on Saturday, using her effortless swing and unflappable demeanour to take a five-stroke victory over New Zealands Lydia Ko.Park shot a five-under-par 66 to finish the tournament at 16-under. Ko, the 19-year-old world number one, ended at 11-under to take silver while Chinas Feng Shanshan finished a stroke further back for bronze. The normally impassive Park, a former world number one, rolled in a final par putt on the 18th hole at the Rio Games Olympic course and appeared to choke up for a moment as she raised her arms in victory. The win adds to an impressive collection of achievements for Park including seven major championships, and served to punctuate the dominance of South Korean women golfers. This definitely ranks at the top, Park, now ranked number five, said of the gold medals place in her career.I have won majors but I havent won a gold medal so this feels very, very special.South Korea had more Olympic qualifiers than any other country, with four, and Park had said earlier that they faced high expectations back home.To hear our national anthem being played over the golf course was just amazing, said Park, relieved.Golf returned to the Games last week with a mens event that concluded Sunday with Britains Justin Rose winning the first Olympic gold medal since 1904.That tournament was dimmed somewhat after more than 20 top mens stars skipped it, including the four highest-ranked players, raising doubts about golfs long-term staying power in the Games. The no-shows were widely criticised.USA womens team member Stacy Lewis suggested that men make too much money compared to women golfers to bother representing their countries.By contrast, this weeks tournament drew all the top female players.- Dramatic finish -=====================It featured a wealth of high-quality golf and several of the women expressed hope this week that their tournament could help them step out of the mens shadow.Park took the tournament lead from the second round and held on despite a charge by Ko, who had a career-first hole-in-one in Fridays third round to leap back into contention.Park had started Saturday two strokes ahead of Ko and widened the gap in shooting a near-flawless four-under-par on the front nine including four birdies. She then stumbled on the tenth, hitting her tee shot into the water en route to a bogey. But Park, known for her serene manner and a lazy swing that seems to fall into place with no effort, shrugged that off.She carded three more birdies down the stretch, effectively sealing gold with her last one on the par-3 17th.But the fight for silver went down to Kos last putt, a clutch roll from eight feet for birdie on the 18th hole that snatched silver from Feng, who was already in the clubhouse.Either way, it was a dramatic finish and I think we made it very exciting for the media and the fans and everybody who was watching worldwide, said Ko, who shot a two-under 69 for the final round. The last time a womens event was staged was 1900, when the USAs Margaret Abbott won a nine-hole tournament at the Paris Games. It was a sweet comeback for Park, who has missed tournaments in recent months due to a nagging thumb injury. That has added to questions raised about the direction her career was heading, especially after the young phenom Ko supplanted her as world number last year.Just 17 at the time, Ko became the youngest golfer, male or female, to reach the top rank.I had to overcome a lof of obstacles (to reach Rio), Park said.I was able to get mentally and physically strong enough this week but I really didnt expect this sort of result. The United States had the second-most golfers in the field with three, including two-time major winner Stacy Lewis.Lewis just missed out on bronze, finishing at nine-under for the tournament, tied for fourth with Japans Harukyo Nomura and Amy Yang of South Korea.

Barcelona begin title defence with a thumping win

Posted:

BARCELONA, Aug 20, 2016 (AFP) - Lionel Messi and hat-trick hero Luis Suarez were in sensational form as they helped Barcelona start their title defence with a crushing 6-2 win over Real Betis at the Camp Nou on Saturday.Messi scored twice and set up another goal, dominating proceedings, while Suarez added three of his own after Arda Turan s opener.Ruben Castro struck a brace for Betis but at no stage of the game did it seem like the visitors had enough to prevent Luis Enrique s team from running amok on the opening day of the new Spanish season.New signings Samuel Umtiti and Denis Suarez started for Barcelona, standing in for Javier Mascherano and Andres Iniesta respectively, as Barcelona battled with a long list of absences.Regardless, it took just five minutes for the hosts to open the scoring, with Turan putting the finishing touch on a fine move. Messi scooped the ball diagonally into the area, finding the marauding Jordi Alba, who cut it back for Turan to prod home.Along with his two strikes against Sevilla that sealed Barcelona s Spanish Super Cup win last week, the goal meant he has already scored more this season than he did in his disappointing debut campaign with Barcelona. While Turan is starting to come to life in a Barca shirt, goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is set to end his time at the Camp Nou, with a move to Manchester City reported to be close.Barcelona fans chanted for him to stay as he prepared to defend Ruben Castro s free-kick, but the Chilean goalkeeper got nowhere near it as the ball flew into the top-right corner. The hosts reacted instantly. Turan had a half-chance to restore Barcelona s lead but couldn t direct Sergi Roberto s raking low cross on target, before Denis Suarez had a strike deflected over and Messi cracked a strike against the crossbar.Eventually Messi put them back ahead with a thunderbolt from outside the box. As he shaped to shoot everybody in the stadium knew what was coming, but there was still nothing goalkeeper Antonio Adan could do to stop it as the Argentine lashed home.Shortly before the break Luis Suarez got on the scoresheet too, when he expertly drilled home Sergi Roberto s cutback, putting the game beyond Gus Poyet s Betis, who couldn t have asked for a tougher opening fixture.Barcelona continued to pile on the pressure in the second period, with Messi twice foiled by Adan, while Denis Suarez had a strike saved too and the assistant referee s flag stopped Turan from adding to his tally after he bundled home from close range. Then came two goals in quick succession, Messi setting up Luis Suarez for a tap-in, before driving home his second and Barcelona s fifth from outside the area again.Messi nearly grabbed his hat-trick but Adan pushed a stinging effort away as Barcelona toyed with Betis at will, before Luis Suarez whipped home a vicious free-kick for his own treble and Castro notched a late consolation.Villarreal go to Granada later before Sevilla host Espanyol, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in action on Sunday.Zinedine Zidane s side are at Real Sociedad and Atletico entertain promoted Alaves.

Chelsea make great comeback to beat Watford, City earn 4-1 victory

Posted:

LONDON, Aug 20, 2016 (AFP) - Liverpool crashed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at Burnley on Saturday, while Manchester City crushed Stoke City 4-1 to extend Pep Guardiolas perfect start in the Premier League. While Liverpool stumbled and City strolled, champions Leicester City are still awaiting the first win of their title defence after being held to a 0-0 draw by Arsenal.Jurgen Klopps Liverpool enjoyed the most eye-catching result of the Premier Leagues opening weekend when they won 4-3 at Arsenal. But the Reds suffered a nightmare in their second match as Welsh forward Sam Vokes scored his first top-flight goal in the second minute after Andre Gray pounced on a woeful pass by Reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne.Liverpool were condemned to a first league loss at Turf Moor since 1973 when Gray ran onto Steven Defours pass and punished slack marking to fire home in the 37th minute. How can I be happy with this? After we gave away the first goal Burnley defended for their lives, Klopp said.We had absolutely no luck and everybody needs to be more clinical. Burnley deserved to win with a very passionate performance. We have to say it was not enough today. At Stokes Bet365 Stadium, City striker Sergio Aguero netted twice in the first half to take his goal tally to six in three games and send Guardiolas side to the top of the table with their second successive win.The Argentine opened the scoring with a 27th-minute penalty, awarded for a Ryan Shawcross tug on Nicolas Otamendi, and bagged his second in the 36th minute with a header from Kevin De Bruynes free-kick.Stoke got one back in the 49th minute when Raheem Sterling was penalised for a slight push on Shawcross and Bojan Krkic stepped up to convert the spot-kick.But the visitors held firm and Spain forward Nolito scored with a pair of close-range efforts in the 86th and 90th minutes to give City manager Guardiola a third consecutive victory in all competitions.Im really impressed with the players as human beings and with their performance, former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss Guardiola said.We have only had one month together. There is time to get better.Citys romp in the Potteries took them above arch rivals Manchester United, who defeated Southampton 2-0 on Friday. At the King Power Stadium, Leicester, beaten by Hull City last weekend, saw two penalty appeals turned down by referee Mark Clattenburg -- first when Laurent Koscielny stretched to tackle Danny Drinkwater, then when Ahmed Musa was challenged by Hector Bellerin. To cap a frustrating day, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri also saw French midfielder Nampalys Mendy forced off with a second-half injury.Asked about the penalty controversy, Ranieri said: My philosophy is its a penalty when the referee blows his whistle and thats it. The manager makes mistakes, the referees make mistakes.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger added: It was a game of top-level intensity and I believe we responded well to last weeks disappointment.- Fortunate -=============Diego Costa fired Chelsea to another late victory as the Spain striker secured a 2-1 win at Watford just days after his last-gasp heroics saw off West Ham.Etienne Capoue broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Watfords French midfielder lashed his shot into the top corner from Adlene Guediouras cross. But Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to equalise for Antonio Contes side in the 80th minute after Heurelho Gomes weakly parried Eden Hazards shot.Batshuayis first goal since his pre-season move from Marseille sparked Chelsea into life and Costa, fortunate to still be on the pitch after avoiding a second booking for diving, rifled in from a Cesc Fabregas assist in the 87th minute.Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama scored his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur to clinch a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane.Wanyama, a summer signing from Southampton, headed home from close-range in the 83rd minute after Harry Kane flicked a corner in his direction to give Tottenham their first victory of the season and leave Palace pointless.Gareth Barrys first goal since January 2014 gave Everton a 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion.Albion took an early lead through Gareth McAuley, but equalised through Kevin Mirallas in first-half stoppage time and former England midfielder Barry headed the 60th-minute winner.Troubled Hull continued to make light of their difficult pre-season with a 2-0 win at Swansea City as late goals from Shaun Maloney and Abel Hernandez lifted them to third.
