MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Nine inmates were killed Thursday as gang members stabbed and bludgeoned their rivals to death in a prison brawl in Mexico, authorities said, the latest deadly violence in the countrys jails. The fight broke out at a prison in Reynosa, a city near the US border in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas. Two groups of prisoners were involved in a clash, using weapons such as clubs, stones and shanks, the state government said in a statement.Nine inmates died and two were wounded. The riot broke out on visitation day, and guards focused their efforts on protecting (inmates) families, it said.State police were sent in to bring the brawl under control, firing shots in the air to break it up.Mexicos overcrowded prisons are plagued by riots, revenge killings and jailbreaks, and powerful gangs often hold de facto control inside.Last month, 28 inmates were hacked to death by their rivals at a prison in Acapulco, a resort town on Mexicos Pacific coast. The prison system in Tamaulipas, a state racked by the deadly violence of Mexicos drug cartel wars, had already made bad headlines twice this year.In March, 29 inmates escaped through a tunnel from a prison in Ciudad Victoria. And in June, seven people were killed, including three police, when officers stormed the same prison to regain control from inmates who had been stockpiling guns.

Nawaz's 'homecoming rally' to resume its journey from Jhelum today

Posted:

JHELUM (Dunya News) – The homecoming rally of Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted by Supreme Court (SC) under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution in Panama Leaks case, will resume its journey towards Lahore today (Friday) at 10:00am after an overnight stay in Jhelum. The cavalcade of Nawaz Sharif will leave for Gujranwala today, where it would have an overnight stay. Finally, the rally will leave for Lahore on Saturday morning.Earlier, during his address to his party workers on reaching Jhelum from Rawalpindi via GT Road, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that he had promised to do everything to take Pakistan towards prosperity and things have improved a lot during the last four years.Nawaz Sharif reminded the participants of the rally of all the promises he had made during the 2013 election campaign. He said that the load shedding of 2013 was a thing of the past already and it will completely be over by 2018.The parties that were going into a different direction in Balochistan were brought into the mainstream politics. We made a coalition government there. We saved Karachi from the menace that it was under in 2013. Today, motorways are being made throughout the country and the economic resurgence is underway, Nawaz Sharif said.Nawaz said that he was ousted by five judges in just one minute. Isnt it a disgrace to the people of Pakistan that five honourable judges ousted the PM who they had voted to power? The people should ask them why they ousted Nawaz Sharif when he had done no corruption, he said. The former PM said that the judges accepted that Nawaz Sharif hadnt done any corruption but still they ousted me. He said that his hands were clear and his heart was filled with love for Pakistan.I want to ask why they ousted me. Someone tell me why I was ousted. There were no charges of corruption or kickbacks against me. Did they oust me because Pakistan was progressing and the poor were getting employment, he said. He added that had the process continued, unemployment would have been eradicated from the country completely.Nawaz added that he was not worried about himself anymore. I am worried about the youth. But the youth must not become hopeless. Its been 70 years that the people are being exploited and not a single PM was able to complete the term. This is not a disgrace to the PM but to the people of Pakistan, he said. You vote people into power and some dictator or some judge comes over and ousts them from the PM office. We have to change it if we want to improve the future of Pakistans youth, he said.I havent come here to ask you for votes this time. I am going home. You had sent me to Islamabad but those in Islamabad sent me home.Nawaz said that he wanted to do something for the people of Pakistan but those in love with container and a maulvi sahab came to Islamabad for the sit-in. The maulvi sahib starts feeling something for Pakistan every three months. I can’t understand how people can follow such a person, Nawaz said.He added that he had been ousted over a charge of not taking salary from his son. On an average one PM is ousted in 1.5 years while the dictators have ruled the country for 10 years each. And see how the dictator left the country, saying he had pain in his back, he said.Nawaz came down hard on the judiciary for having allowed Musharraf legitimacy, saying that the judges had approved of Musharrafs coup. Are there any courts in this country that would sentence such dictators? He said that the nation will avenge everything that had been done with him. If you hold these people accountable for their deeds now then Pakistan will surely survive, he added. It is our duty now to ensure that no PM is ousted by anyone other than those who vote him to power, Nawaz said.

You can never look too far ahead, but I will try to treasure every moment of involvement.Stoneman also had some words of sympathy for former county colleague Jennings.Keats is a top guy and we have spent a long time working together, he added. He has come up against a fantastic attack in the last few Tests and I will be calling him to wish him all the best.Fit again pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes has replaced Steven Finn in the squad for a match on his Warwickshire home ground that will be the first day/night Test ever staged in England.Woakes, who could be in a contest with Toby Roland-Jones for the role of third seamer, has recovered from a side strain sustained during the Champions Trophy in June that has kept him out for much of the season. But his return to the County Championship earlier this week saw Woakes take five wickets in the match and score 53 in the second innings as Warwickshire beat Middlesex at Lords.By not, as yet, resting James Anderson and Stuart Broad, England could ensure their two senior pacemen gain some floodlit Test experience ahead of the Ashes day/nighter in Adelaide in DecemberThe three-match campaign against the West Indies, which also features fixtures at Headingley and Lords, is Englands last Test series before they travel to Australia.Joe Root will look to carry on from where he left off after his first Test series as England captain ended in a resounding victory.England 1st Test squad:Alastair Cook (Essex), Mark Stoneman (Surrey), Tom Westley (Essex), Joe Root (Yorkshire, capt), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Ben Stokes (Durham), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire, wkt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mason Crane (Hampshire).Fixtures:Aug 17-21: England v West Indies, 1st Test, Edgbaston.Aug 25-29: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Headingley.Sep 07-11: England v West Indies, 3rd Test, Lords.
