China ups ante in high-altitude standoff with India

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - China has stepped up its rhetoric in an increasingly tense border row with India, hinting at the possibility of military action in a propaganda push that analysts are calling genuinely troubling. For more than a month, Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in a standoff on a remote but strategically important Himalayan plateau near where Tibet, India and Bhutan meet.On Thursday, Chinese defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang warned that Beijing had shown restraint but had a bottom line.No country should underestimate the Chinese forces... resolve and willpower to defend national sovereignty, he said in a post on the ministry website. It is a line that has been echoed almost word for word this week by the foreign ministry, the official Xinhua news agency, the ruling Communist Party mouthpiece the Peoples Daily, the official military news website of the Chinese armed forces, and other outlets. On Wednesday, the foreign ministry released a 15-page document of facts about the border dispute, which included a map of alleged intrusions and photographs of what it stated were Indian troops and military vehicles on Chinas side of the frontier.Calling for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Indian troops, it warned Beijing would take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests.Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Thursday that India was building roads, hoarding supplies and deploying a large number of troops in the area. This is by no means for peace, Geng said.Mistrust between the giant neighbours goes back centuries and the pair fought a brief war in 1962 in Indias border state of Arunachal Pradesh. The recent escalation of Chinas rhetoric was genuinely troubling, Rory Medcalf, head of Australian National Universitys National Security College, told AFP.It suggests that diplomatic conversations, including among high-level national security advisers, are failing to find a face-saving way for the two powers to withdraw their forces, he said. The plateau is strategically significant as it gives China access to the so-called chicken neck -- a thin strip of land connecting Indias northeastern states with the rest of the country.Despite the heated war of words, other analysts played down the possibility of an armed clash. The point of these statements isnt that war is imminent; rather, theyre an attempt to figure out how to not go to war without losing face, Shen Dingli, vice dean of Fudan Universitys Institute of International Studies, told AFP.Neither side wants to go to war, but China and India are acting like two unhappy little children.China has rolled out a massive new global infrastructure programme known as the One Belt, One Road initiative, which it presents as a peaceful development policy to connect Chinese companies to new markets around the world.Critics see it as a geopolitical powerplay.President Xi Jinping is set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a summit of BRICS nations in the Chinese city of Xiamen in early September and has said he hopes for greater cooperation within the bloc. But he is also gearing up for a key party congress later this year, at which he is expected to further consolidate his grip on power -- making him unwilling to appear weak by backing down in the current dispute, said politics professor Yvonne Chiu, who researches Chinas military at Hong Kong University.Chiu said China was testing how much they can get away with, in a region that is unlikely to draw the involvement of other major powers such as the US.

UN to vote on tougher North Korea sanctions

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council will vote Saturday on a US-drafted resolution toughening sanctions on North Korea, diplomats said Friday, a proposed ban on certain exports that could deprive Pyongyang of $1 billion in annual revenue. After a month of negotiations, the United States reached a deal with China, North Koreas main trading partner and ally, on the measures aimed at ratcheting up pressure on Pyongyang to halt its missile and nuclear tests. The Security Council was scheduled to vote at 3 pm (1900 GMT) Saturday on the new raft of sanctions, diplomats confirmed. The draft resolution calls for a ban on all exports of coal, iron and iron ore, lead and lead ore, as well as fish and seafood by the cash-starved state, according to the text seen by AFP.If implemented by all countries, the ban would strip Pyongyang of roughly a third of its export earnings estimated at $3 billion per year, according to a diplomat familiar with the negotiations. The diplomat, who briefed reporters on the content of the draft, said he had high confidence that China and Russia would support the proposed sanctions.Backed by its European allies, Japan and South Korea, the United States has been leading the push at the United Nations for tougher sanctions in response to North Koreas launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4.A second test on July 28 further raised alarm about Pyongyangs drive to develop a missile capable of hitting the US mainland. The draft text would also prevent North Korea from increasing the number of workers it sends abroad, prohibit all new joint ventures and ban new investment in the current joint companies.North Korea is blamed for a massive diversion of its scarce resources toward the development of nuclear weapons and a number of expensive ballistic missile programs, the draft resolution said. The new raft of measures would be the seventh set of UN sanctions imposed on North Korea since it first carried out a nuclear test in 2006, but these have failed to compel Pyongyang to change its behavior. Two resolutions adopted last year however have introduced economic sanctions with more bite. The United States has put heavy pressure on China, which accounts for 90 percent of trade with North Korea, to enforce the sanctions. The proposed resolution would add North Koreas Foreign Trade Bank, the primary foreign exchange bank, to a UN sanctions blacklist, which provides for an assets freeze. It would also tighten trade restrictions on technology to prevent North Korea from acquiring items that could be used for its military programs. Under the proposed measure, North Korean vessels caught violating UN resolutions would be banned from entering ports in all countries. The draft resolution however does not provide for cuts to oil deliveries to North Korea -- a move that would have dealt a serious blow to the economy.Russia, which like China is a veto-wielding council member, had warned that it would not support sanctions that would worsen North Koreas humanitarian crisis. The United States and its allies have argued that tougher sanctions are needed to force North Korea to come to the negotiating table to discuss a halt to its military programs.China and Russia have meanwhile insisted that sanctions alone will not change Pyongyangs behavior and that talks are needed to address the crisis. As negotiations at the United Nations entered the final stretch, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared that Washington was not seeking regime change in North Korea and was willing to talk to Pyongyang.

US vows crackdown on 'staggering' number of leaks

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday vowed to crack down on government employees who leak classified or sensitive information, after a spate of revelations in the media -- many of them unfavorable -- about the Trump administration.President Donald Trump has repeatedly fumed about illegal leaks and even lashed out publicly at Sessions for taking what he called a very weak position on the issue.Under pressure, and with some saying his job could be on the line, Sessions responded.I strongly agree with the president and condemn in the strongest terms the staggering number of leaks undermining the ability of our government to protect this country, Sessions told a press conference.Four people have already been charged with unlawfully disclosing classified material or concealing contacts with federal officers, he said.Active leak investigations this year have tripled compared with the number before Trump took office, Sessions added. We are taking a stand. This culture of leaking must stop, he said, adding that we will not allow rogue anonymous sources with security clearances to sell out our country.Moves to crack down on damaging leaks did not originate with Trumps administration.Under his predecessor Barack Obama, whistleblowers and leakers who talked to journalists were prosecuted, and the Justice Department issued subpoenas to reporters to compel them to reveal their sources. In what could signal an ominous turn, Sessions said his Justice Department was reviewing policies affecting media subpoenas. While the administration has respect for the press, it is not unlimited, he said. They cannot place lives at risk with impunity, he added. We must balance the presss role with protecting our national security.Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein fleshed out some details, telling reporters there would be a new, dedicated unit at the Federal Bureau of Investigation that would be focused on media leaks.Asked if the Justice Department would rule out prosecuting reporters for doing their job, Rosenstein said he was not going to comment on hypotheticals.Changes to policies concerning the media would only be taken following consultations with representatives of news outlets, he said. The flexing of judiciary muscle came just hours after yet another stunning revelation leaked to the media: a report by The Wall Street Journal that special counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russias interference with the 2016 presidential election.Grand jury proceedings are typically secret, and the exposure only highlighted the leaky sieve that Washington has become.A prominent civil rights group warned that clamping down on leakers signaled a crackdown against democracy itself.Every American should be concerned about the Trump administrations threat to step up its efforts against whistleblowers and journalists, said Ben Wizner of the American Civil Liberties Union.Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who addressed the media with Sessions, issued his own tough warning to would-be leakers and described such revelations as betraying the American people. If you improperly disclose classified information, we will find you, he said. We will investigate you, we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.The announcement follows a torrent of damaging revelations to the media, following six months of political intrigue and open feuding in the White House. It comes after a leak that was unusual even by the standards of this administration -- the publication by The Washington Post of the contents of private phone calls between Trump and foreign leaders. The newspaper published the full transcripts Thursday of conversations the Republican billionaire leader held in January with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.Sessions signaled his anger over the revelations, which apparently came from inside the White House.Disclosure of the transcripts rocked Washington, with lawmakers across the political spectrum strongly denouncing the leaks of presidential conversations with world leaders.Somebody needs to go to jail, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stressed Friday on Fox News. You dont have the right if you work in the White House or youre a holdover from the Obama administration... to take the law in your own hands, Graham said, adding that the leaks were hurting the presidency itself.

Rabada gives South Africa early edge in fourth Test

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Kagiso Rabada took the prize wicket of Ben Stokes as South Africa held England to 260 for six on Fridays first day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.All-rounder Stokes, fresh from a hundred in Englands 239-run victory in the third Test at The Oval, was leading a revival with the bat.But fast bowler Rabada struck with the new ball in the penultimate over of the day when a full-length delivery, which surprised Stokes, smashed into the base of the stumps and bowled the left-handed batsman for 58.Rabada, banned from the second Test for swearing at Stokes in the series opener, yelled in joy.He finished the day with figures of two for 52 in 18 overs, but the worth of South Africas efforts as they seek a win that would see them end the series all square at 2-2 will only become fully apparent when they bat.Jonny Bairstow, who might have fallen for four, was 33 not out and nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones unbeaten on nought at the close. All of South Africas frontline bowlers in an attack missing injured pacemen Vernon Philander and Chris Morris, both ruled out with lower back strains, took wickets on Friday.Fast bowler Morne Morkel deserved better than figures of one for 58 in 19 overs, while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj kept things tight in a return of one for 54 in 29 overs.Meawhile Duanne Olivier, recalled along with batsman Theunis de Bruyn, took two for 72 in 19 overs including having England captain Joe Root lbw for 52.The boys will be happy with the performance today, paceman Olivier told Sky Sports. When Root missed that delivery, I knew it was going to hit the stumps. There was no doubt in my mind.Olivier added: If we can do the basics right, we can disrupt England.Paul Farbrace, the England assistant coach, accepted it had been a tough day for the hosts.Morne Morkel was outstanding and Maharaj has bowled with real control, he said, adding: I think we battled well.Root made a fifty for the tenth straight Test. But only two of those innings have yielded centuries.Roots conversion rate of Test fifties into hundreds of 28.57 percent is modest for a player of his ability and he has previously acknowledged it is something he needs to improve in an otherwise impressive record.Indias Virat Kohli boasts a conversion rate of 54.83 percent, while Australias Steve Smith (50) and New Zealands Kane Williamson (40.47) are also well ahead of fellow leading batsman Root in this regard.England were unchanged from the side that triumphed at The Oval, a result that left Root on the brink of a win in his first Test series as England captain.Root again won the toss and batted, only to see struggling left-handed opener Keaton Jennings fall for 17 when the South Africa-born left-hander was caught behind by schoolboy team-mate Quinton de Kock off Olivier. The Essex duo of Alastair Cook (46) and Tom Westley (29) both exited after lunch with England on 92.Cook was caught behind off Maharaj before de Kocks brilliant diving catch, this time off Rabada, accounted for Westley and gave the wicket-keeper his 100th Test dismissal.Dawid Malan, looking for a big score after managing just 11 runs in total on Test debut at The Oval, made 18 before edging Morkel to South Africa captain Faf du Plessis at second slip. But another example of Morkels bad luck this series came when Root nicked the towering quick on 40, only for de Kock to remain inexplicably still for what his catch as the ball went for four.Fortunately for de Kock, it was not an expensive error, with Olivier the beneficiary of a misjudgement by Root.During his innings Root, at 26 years and 217 days, became the third youngest player after India legend Sachin Tendulkar (25 years, 301 days) and Cook (26 years and 10 days) to score 5,000 Test runs.Bairstow appeared to be out for four, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena asked for a review that saw Dean Elgars slip catch off Maharaj overturned.

England deny South Africa approach for Gibson

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Friday they had not received any approach from their South Africa counterparts for Ottis Gibson amid reports he was poised to become the Proteas new head coach.England bowling coach Gibson was linked with the post by several British media outlets during Fridays first day of the fourth Test against South Africa at Old Trafford. The current contract of South Africa head coach Russell Domingo expires at the end of this tour. However, an ECB statement issued Friday said no approach for Gibson had yet been received, while leaving the door ajar for a move when the series-ending fourth Test is finished. We have had no approach from Cricket South Africa, it said.We will not listen to any approaches until after the current series has concluded. The 48-year-old Gibson is in his second spell working with Englands pacemen after four years as head coach of his native West Indies from 2010-14.Former West Indies fast bowler Gibson rejoined Englands coaching staff two years ago.England, 2-1 up against South Africa, start a new Test series against the West Indies later this monthThe ECB would, at the very latest, want any vacancy in their backroom team filled before this years Ashes tour of Australia.

'Never again' - Aussie union lashes out over pay war

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian cricket must never again embark on such an acrimonious pay row, the players union says, after a bruising months-long dispute that rattled the sport was finally resolved. The bad-tempered stand-off, that has badly damaged relations between cricketers and the governing body, came to a head on Thursday with the players walking away the winners. We congratulate the players who have bravely made the case in the public domain. It will be important that they are respected for having the courage of their convictions, said Australian Cricketers Association president Greg Dyer. But he said there was now a reality to confront.Yes, weve arrived at a great place but the game must never again take this same route. The players did not choose this route and did not enjoy being on it, he said.In fact, the players resented it deeply. This was not a fight the players started. The players defended themselves as is fair and as is their right. The row was sparked by Cricket Australia attempting to scrap the revenue-sharing deal that has governed players salaries since their first memorandum of understanding was brokered 20 years ago.Players had been paid a percentage of gross revenue for the past two decades, and they argued that changing the system would make them employees rather than partners with incentives to grow the game.CA wanted to pay them from a set pool instead, with only surplus revenue shared, to give it more cash to invest in grassroots programs and facilities. In the end, after months of mud-slinging and with broadcasters and sponsors applying pressure, the players came out on top in a five-year agreement worth an estimated Aus$500 million (US$396 million). Not only did they retain the revenue-sharing model they had been fighting for, but they got a greater share, with women cricketers included for the first time. The players have had a huge win, former Australian captain Allan Border told Fox Sports Australia. This has been a TKO (technical knockout) in the 15th round for the players. They should be very happy with the situation, particularly the girls.Current captain Steve Smith admitted the negotiations were challenging, but the players were now focused on the cricket that lies ahead. Its been a long and challenging process and its great that we can now get on with playing the game that we all love, he tweeted.Im excited that we can all start working together again to continue to grow our great game. The resolution means Australias threatened series against Bangladesh this month will go ahead, with the team assembling in Darwin next week for a camp before heading to Dhaka on August 18.

Ashwin strikes dent Sri Lanka reply

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed two early wickets to put India on top of the second Test after the visitors posted 622-9 declared against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Friday.Ashwin got rid of openers Upul Tharanga for nought and Dimuth Karunaratne for 25 to leave the hosts reeling at 50 for two at stumps on the second day.Kusal Mendis on 16 and skipper Dinesh Chandimal on eight were batting at close of play with the hosts still trailing by 572 runs in their first innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.Chandi and Kusal batted really well in the last few overs. We have to play positively, Karunaratne, who praised Ashwins variations as a spinner, told reporters.Last time when we played in Galle Chandi got 160-odd scoring a lot of runs off the sweep and reverse sweep. I think that will be key.Earlier six Indian batsmen scored 50 or more -- including centuries by Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane -- as the tourists posted their biggest total in Sri Lanka.Indian allrounder Ravindra Jadeja hit an unbeaten 70 as wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha made a patient 67 and Ashwin scored 54 before becoming Herath victims.Right now, it is a good thing that every batsman is scoring runs. Not only top five or six but also 7, 8, 9, 10, Rahane told reporters.(Mohammed) Shami also scoring a bit, Umesh (Yadav) was also batting well. So it is good that the last four are contributing, Rahane said. However the 217-run fourth-wicket partnership between overnight centurions Pujara, who top-scored with 133, and Rahane remained the highlight of Indias innings. We thought if we dominate, if we change the momentum, they will be on the back foot straightaway, and thats what happened, Rahane said of the marathon stand. We knew that one big partnership and they will be on the back foot, he added.Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath claimed four wickets for Sri Lanka, which suffered new injury worries after paceman Nuwan Pradeep left the field on day one with a pulled hamstring.Karunaratne informed that the hosts will not only miss Pradeep in the ongoing Test but the paceman will be out of action for one or two months. We prepared this pitch to turn, thats why weve played only one seamer... Now with Nuwans injury, theres no opportunity to get a wicket with the new ball, or through reverse swing when it gets older, said Karunaratne.Debutant left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara picked up two wickets. They included batsman Rahane for 132 -- his maiden Test scalp -- in the morning session.Part-time bowler Karunaratne claimed Pujara, who added just five runs to his overnight 128 but the damage was already done.I started my career as a bowler, not as a batsman, so I can bowl, said Karunaratne, who took his maiden Test wicket.India, who lead the three-match series 1-0, need a win to clinch the series. The hosts need at least a draw to keep their hopes alive.

Parliamentary committee formed to investigate Ayesha Gulalai's claims

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A motion was approved in the National Assembly to investigate Ayesha Gulalai’s allegations against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.A parliamentary committee will be formed to conduct an on-camera probe into the matter. The special team members will investigate the alleged lewd messages sent to Ayesha Gulalai by Imran Khan. Islamabad (Dunya News) - PTI ChairmanImran Khan has reacted to the formation of a special parliamentary committee to probe into Ayesha Gulalai’s allegations saying I challenge the investigators to find the so-called lewd messages from his number. He welcomed the decision made by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan which resulted into a motion which was passed today. Imran Khan also pointed out that PM Abbasi decided to treat these claims as a priority instead of proposing plans to recover the damage incurred on account of country-wide floods. He further said that due to failure in cases petitioned against PTI, the rival parties are seeking new ways to score points in order to undermine the standing of their party.Imran Khan said that Ayesha Gulalai is in contact with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Ameer Muqam and Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman in this campaign backed by PML-N. He belives that forensic audit should be carried out regarding the meetings between these three personalities as well as Gulalai’s father. Russia slams new EU sanctions as 'hostile' and 'groundless'

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia reacted angrily Friday after the European Union expanded its sanctions over the transfer of Siemens gas turbines to Moscow-annexed Crimea, calling the move hostile. The decision of Brussels to include a number of Russian officials and companies as a retaliatory measure for alleged illegitimate supply of Siemens gas turbines to Crimea prompts deep regret, the foreign ministry said in a statement. The new sanctions target three people including deputy energy minister Andrei Cherezov and three companies involved in the gas turbines deal, according to the EUs official legal journal. The companies hit by sanctions are the firm that bought the turbines, the current owner of the machinery, and a firm that specialises in setting up power plants in Crimea. We see this step, taken on the initiative of Berlin, as hostile and groundless, the ministry added, warning that we reserve the right to take retaliatory measures. It insisted that the sanctions were imposed over a business disagreement that had been politicised to an absurd degree, singling out for blame both EU and Berlin. The responsibility for this decision, including possible economic losses for Siemens and other German and European companies working in Russia, lies completely and fully with the EU and the German government, it said. The foreign ministry nevertheless avowed its interest in preserving and progressively developing cooperation both with Germany and the EU.Russias energy ministry earlier refused to comment to RIA Novosti state news agency on the inclusion of a deputy minister under sanctions.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata vowed on Friday to donate one percent of his salary to charity and called on other professional footballers to follow suit. The Spain international, 29, has signed up to a scheme called Common Goal created by streetfootballworld, a group of 120 charities from 80 countries. What were trying to do is define a shared social agenda for football. Common Goal goes beyond individual brands and egos to deliver a greater impact, Mata said.By making the pledge, we can form a lasting connection between football as a business and football as a tool for social change.Common Goal is aiming to assemble a starting XI of players prepared to commit one percent of their earnings, with the ultimate aim of securing one percent of revenue from the entire football industry. One of the first lessons I learned in football is that it takes a team to win a game, Mata added in an article on the Players Tribune website.I urge my fellow players to get involved.
