Man United defeat Leicester by 2-0

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini struck to maintain Manchester Uniteds 100 percent start to the Premier League season in a 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.Rashford, dropped to the bench to make way for Anthony Martial, turned in Henrikh Mkhitaryans corner in the 70th minute, less than three minutes after coming on.Fellaini added a late second from Jesse Lingards cross-shot to send Jose Mourinhos side back to the top of the table after Huddersfield Town briefly overtook them by drawing with Southampton earlier in the day.But it looked as if they would be denied when Kasper Schmeichel made a superb penalty save from Romelu Lukaku early in the second half. The Leicester goalkeeper, son of former United great Peter Schmeichel, dived to his right to push away Lukakus kick. The home side began full of confidence, threatening in the opening minute as Leicester captain Wes Morgan blocked a shot from Mkhitaryan after good build-up play down the United right.Craig Shakespeares side had to work hard to withstand that early pressure, with Morgan at full stretch in central defence alongside new England squad member Harry Maguire.United, though, continued to press, with Juan Mata unlucky to have a goal ruled out for a marginal offside in the 18th minute.Paul Pogbas cross was cleared unconvincingly by Maguire and Lukaku turned on the edge of the area to hit a shot that Mata followed up to sweep in after Schmeichel had parried.Assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis raised his flag, but Mata looked to have been level with the Leicester back line as Lukaku let fly.Fired by that perceived injustice, United went close twice in quick succession.- Mahrez menaces -First Pogba half-volleyed Martials outswinging cross just wide at the far post and then Schmeichel dived athletically to his right to paw away a bending Mata shot.Shinji Okazaki had a half-chance for Leicester at the other end, with David de Gea gathering his low shot from Jamie Vardys knock-down.But United continued to look the more dangerous side, with Pogba hitting a fierce 30-yard shot that flew just wide.Schmeichel was alert to gather Martials snapshot from 20 yards, before beating away a Pogba effort and then watching another drive from the France midfielder whizz by his right-hand post.Having been well protected by his defenders in the first half, Schmeichel was inspired to keep the game goalless when United were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute of the second half.Leicesters former United right-back Danny Simpson was adjudged to have handled Martials driven cross from the left, but Schmeichel flung himself to his right to push away Lukakus spot-kick.That gave the visitors the confidence to be a little more adventurous, with winger Riyad Mahrez cutting in from the right and driving a ball to the near post that De Gea kicked away.Mahrez, repeatedly linked with a move away from Leicester, began to carry more of a threat, scuffing one shot wide and then breaking onto a pass by substitute Demarai Gray to deliver a dangerous cross. But 20 minutes from the end, Rashford diverted in Mkhitaryans right-wing corner on the volley, with Schmeichel only able to push it into the roof of the net.Victory was secured in the 82nd minute as Fellaini diverted in fellow substitute Lingards cross, despite replays suggesting he had been offside. The visitors almost pulled one back in stoppage time, but De Gea reacted well to turn away Andy Kings close-range shot. Lukaku then blazed over at the other end.

Occupied Kashmir: Ten killed in attack on police facility

Posted:

SRINAGAR (AFP) - A day-long gun battle Saturday left at least 10 dead in Indian-administered Kashmir as militants stormed a police facility in a pre-dawn attack, authorities said. The militants, believed to be three in number, detonated grenades and fired automatic assault rifles to gain entry to the police headquarters in southern Pulwama district which also houses families of some officers, director general of police S.P. Vaid said. One police officer was killed in the initial assault, while three paramilitary troops were injured and evacuated to a nearby hospital, he said.Three more police officers and four CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) soldiers were killed later during the attack, Vaid told AFP.Two attackers were killed and government forces were searching for the third attacker, believed to be holed up in the compound, he said. All the families in the compound were evacuated and the militants had taken no hostages, police said in an earlier statement.Authorities cut off mobile internet services in the district to prevent residents from organising anti-India protests as a tactic to help the militants escape. In recent months, residents, sometimes entire villages, have increasingly hit the streets and thrown stones at soldiers when rebels are trapped in military cordons to help them escape.Security forces fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators after sporadic protests broke out close to the police facility, an officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.Government forces have stepped up counterinsurgency operations since the start of the year and have killed at least 136 rebels, including most of the top commanders of rebel groups operating in the disputed territory.Kashmir has been divided between Indian and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Both claim the territory in full.Rebel groups have for decades fought the more than 500,000 Indian soldiers deployed in the restive territory, demanding independence or a merger of the former Himalayan kingdom with Pakistan.Tens of thousands, mostly civilians, have died in the fighting.

These people should witness out rallies in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). PPP is exists in the country despite conspiracies to weaken it,” he spoke.Addressing the Fateh Jang rally organised by PPP, he talked about Pakistan’s ‘weak’ foreign policy, US policy review for South Asia and Afghanistan, and lack of trust showed by global stakeholders. Bilawal Bhutto complained that the leadership did not implement National Action Plan (NAP) and extremist organisations had made political parties to take part in political activities. These people are only in the contest of sitting on the throne, he added while telling that all the claims of development are false as the government remained unsuccessful to deliver. PPP chief mentioned dengue broke out in Peshawar while Imran Khan went to Sukkur . He recalled Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who made this country a nuclear power. He vowed to deliver for the power and fight terrorism if given a chance. It was the first time in history that the US apologised to Pakistan when PPP government blocked their NATO supply, he remembered.

Indian city under siege after clashes over 'rape guru' kill 36

Posted:

SIRSA (AFP) - Hundreds of troops Saturday laid siege to the headquarters of a sect led by controversial Indian guru whose conviction for rape triggered deadly clashes that have killed at least 36 people.Soldiers and riot police cordoned off the routes leading to the sprawling premises of guru Ram Rahim Singh spread over 1,000 acres (404 hectares) in Sirsa, a town in northern Haryana state.A police source told AFP some 20,000 followers of gurus Dera Sacha Sauda sect were believed to be holed up inside the mini township that houses schools, a hospital, various sports facilities and a cinema hall. The area has been put under curfew. The situation is tense but under control, he told AFP, requesting anonymity.TV footage showed heavily armed security forces taking position outside the gated headquarters.Army major general Rajpal Punia however said there were no plans as yet to storm the headquarters and evacuate the premises. We are only focusing on maintaining law and order, he told reporters. The Press Trust of India news agency said 15 followers of the spiritual sect had been arrested for rioting and arson that broke out Friday in the cities of Panchkula and Sirsa, minutes after Singh was found guilty of raping two of his followers.Police said at least 36 people were killed as tens of thousands of followers went on an angry rampage, attacking television vans and setting fire to dozens of vehicles.According to the latest update 30 people have died in Panchkula and six in Sirsa, Haryana police chief B. S. Sandhu told AFP.More than 200 people were injured including about 50 police and security personnel, he added.Authorities in Haryana, which is ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modis right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, faced flak over poor handling of the situation and allowing Singh to travel in a luxury chopper to the jail. The 50-year-old Singh is known as the guru in bling for his penchant for bejewelled costumes and claims to have more than 50 million loyal followers worldwide. The rape case was brought against him after an anonymous letter was sent to then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002 accusing him of repeatedly raping the sender and several other women in the sect.A judge asked the Central Bureau of Investigations to look into the accusations, but it took years to trace the victims and it was not until 2007 that two women came forward and filed charges.Unjust verdictSome 200,000 members of Singhs sect had gathered in Panchkula in a show of support a day before the verdict. The decision enraged his followers, with many saying they were in a state of shock.I have been with dear Ram Rahim Singh for around 14 years. I can bet that all the allegations against our guru are false, said Rajkumar, a shopkeeper from Haryana who was undergoing treatment in hospital. He cant do any wrong... He works to rid the world of all its troubles, he told AFP, his head heavily bandaged.Ajay Garg, a doctor in Panchkula, blamed the police for allowing the situation to spiral out of control. Our family was very scared. We went to the third floor of our house. They (mobs) were out of control and even damaged my car which was parked outside, he told AFP.Singhs sect said it would appeal the verdict while urging supporters to maintain peace. This is unjust. We will appeal against the judgement, it said in a statement late Friday.Singh, often seen sporting flamboyant leather jackets and riding customised superbikes, has a special love of cinema. In 2015 he started a film franchise portraying him as MSG or the Messenger of God, performing miracles, preaching to thousands and beating up gangsters while singing and dancing. His last flick MSG - The Warrior Lion Heart was released last year, with the guru playing a secret agent fighting aliens and UFOs.Singhs sentencing will be announced on Monday.

CORPUS CHRISTI (AFP) - Officials in Texas said Saturday they plan evacuate 4,500 inmates from three prisons over fears they could be hit by flooding triggered by Hurricane Harvey. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said three detention facilities -- Ramsey, Terrell and Stringfellow -- would be evacuated as a precaution, as waters rise from the nearby Brazos River.Authorities said the inmates would be transferred by bus beginning to facilities in another part of the state. The evacuation order was issued as Texas and parts of Louisiana faced the threat of historic flooding from Harvey, which roared ashore early Saturday as a category four hurricane. The storm -- the most powerful to hit the US mainland in over a decade -- slammed into Texas, destroying homes and other buildings, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee.A vast area of Texas faces potentially devastating floods from the storm, which was could dump as many as 40 inches (100 centimeters) of rain in some regions.

Bayern thankful for late Lewandowski double

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Late goals in quick succession by Robert Lewandowski gave defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich their second straight win with a 2-0 victory at Werder Bremen on Saturday.Bremens last win over Bayern was in 2006, but the hosts held their star-studded opponents until the 72nd minute when Lewandowski first struck. The Poland hot-shot audaciously flicked Kingsley Comans low cross into the net with his heel before doubling the damage by firing through the legs of defender Robert Bauer and Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka on 75 minutes. He is certainly the best striker in the Bundesliga and one of the best in the world, enthused Bayern director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic. He is simply our little firecracker.Thomas Muellers decoy run opened up the Bremen defence for Lewandowski, who seized the chance for a third goal in two league games.Werder played very defensively which didnt make things easy and there wasnt much room for us, said Lewandowski. We had to be patient and take our chances. There was more good news for Bayern as Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made his first appearance this season after a fractured foot.Hamburg have also won their opening two games after a 3-1 victory at Cologne on Friday.Elsewhere, Wolfsburg enjoyed a 1-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt with Daniel Didavi scoring their first-half winner.Frankfurts Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng was denied a penalty after being fouled in the area, with the video assistant referee ruling he was offside. After losing their Champions League play-off at Liverpool on Wednesday, Hoffenheim fought back twice to claim a 2-2 draw at Bayer Leverkusen.A 4-2 defeat at Anfield means Hoffenheim will play in the Europa League group stage this season. They fell behind at Leverkusen after Brazilian left-back Wendell put the hosts ahead with a penalty on 33 minutes at the BayArena.Hoffenheim equalised when striker Andrej Kramaric fired home just after the restart, but the scores were level for only two minutes.Germany winger Karim Bellarabi slotted home from 12 metres to put Leverkusen 2-1 ahead before Kerem Demirbays cross was met by Mark Uth, whose shot went in off the underside of the crossbar on 70 minutes.Borussia Moenchengladbach conceded a goal after just 35 seconds in their 2-2 draw at Augsburg. The game had barely kicked off when Alfred Finnbogason slotted home for Augsburg but goals by Denis Zakaria and Oscar Wendt made it 2-1 to Gladbach at the break. However, Augsburgs new Venezuelan signing Sergio Cordova, 20, hit an 89th-minute leveller, his first goal for his new German club.VfB Stuttgarts Germany centre-back Holger Badstuber scored his first goal in the Bundesliga since December 2009 to seal a 1-0 win at home to Mainz.Badstuber was playing for Bayern when he last netted in Germanys top flight nearly eight years ago. However, a horror run of injuries saw him sent on loan to Schalke last season before his contract with the Bavarians expired, leaving him to rebuild his career at Stuttgart.Stuttgart should have finished with a 2-0 win but striker Simon Terodde slammed a penalty against the post.

LONDON, Aug 26, 2017 (AFP) - A man arrested under the Terrorism Act after deliberately driving at police outside Queen Elizabeth IIs Buckingham Palace residence in London had a four-foot sword in his car, police said on Saturday.Upon being challenged by officers, the 26-year-old attacker reached for what we now know to be a four-foot sword which was in the front passenger foot well, the police statement said. The man, who repeatedly shouted Allahu akbar (God is greatest), was incapacitated with CS spray. The assailant stopped his car near a police vehicle in a restricted area outside the world famous palace at around 8:35pm (1935 GMT) Friday, according to a Metropolitan Police statement.Three unarmed officers were injured during the course of detaining the man, two of them requiring hospital treatment.Initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and assaulting police, he was later arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000.Originally from Luton -- a city 30 miles (50 km) north of London -- the assailant was then taken to a London hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being taken to a central London police station for questioning.Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command are now investigating and searches are being carried out in the Luton area today, Dean Haydon, the police head of counter-terrorism, said in the statement. We believe the man was acting alone and we are not looking for other suspects at this stage, he added. The incident comes with Britain and much of Europe on high alert following a string of major attacks over the past two years -- most of which have been claimed by jihadists -- and hours after a knife attack on soldiers in Brussels. In Britain alone a total of 35 people have been killed in three attacks in London and Manchester since March. Two of those involved a vehicle ploughing into pedestrians. The other attack was a bombing in May at a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande in Manchester which killed 22 people including children.
