Collingwood reveals interest in Pakistan series

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former England all rounder Paul Collingwood has been approached to play in a Twenty20 series in Pakistan next month as part of the campaign to bring top-level cricket back to the country.Collingwood admits he could be willing to take part in the landmark three-match series in Lahore providing security measures are in place. The touring side will be coached by Andy Flower, forming part of the International Cricket Councils bid to step up the return of major matches to the volatile nation. The World XI series will be followed by a short visit by Sri Lanka for a Twenty20 match in October, then a Twenty20 series against the West Indies a month later.Collingwood, Englands World Twenty20 winning captain in 2010, is still playing for Durham and admits the idea of representing a world XI at the age of 41 certainly appeals.Ive been asked if I would be willing. But until you hear all the details of the security and everything you cant really commit to anything, he said.Andy asked me if I would entertain the idea, so thats the starting point.Certainly the thing that would interest me is if, at 41, I could play in a T20 international in front of that crowd, that would float anybodys boat. The tag of a world XI at 41, Im quite proud of that if I was to get into that team.Pakistan has been isolated from the international scene since a terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 and have been forced to play their home internationals in the UAE.Collingwood added: What I do remember about Pakistan was the passion of the supporters.I think Karachi was probably one of the loudest crowds I have heard during an international match. They love cricket out there and its a tough place to tour.If it was England and we werent allowed to play cricket in England, we would be doing everything possible to get it back.

De Villiers quits as South Africa ODI skipper

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Star batsman AB de Villiers quit as South Africa one-day international (ODI) skipper Wednesday, but committed to representing his country in all three cricket formats.Faf du Plessis has proved to be an outstanding captain of the Twenty20 (T20) and Test teams, he said in a statement.Bearing this in mind, I have informed Cricket South Africa that I would like to step down as ODI captain. It has been an honour to lead the team for the past six years, but it is now time for someone else to take the ODI side forward.Whoever is chosen as the new ODI captain will have my complete support.De Villiers last skippered the ODI team two months ago in the Champions Trophy in England, where South Africa failed to reach the semi-finals after defeats by Pakistan and India. He has averaged 53.56 runs in 221 appearances in the one-day format since debuting against England 12 years ago.De Villiers rejected media claims that he was cherry-picking when to play for South Africa and putting himself before the team. That is simply not true. That has never been true. Playing for South Africa is, and will always be, the greatest privilege of my life, he said.He missed the recent 3-1 Test series defeat in England, last playing for South Africa in the longest format at the beginning of 2016.De Villiers said mental and physical tiredness and raising a young family had forced him to take a temporary international break.I really do feel refreshed and revived, said the 33-year-old.I want to get back on the field and today assured the national selectors that I will be available for selection in all three formats of the game during the coming season. There is plenty of hard work ahead in the nets and I must prepare properly, but I will be ready to play, if required, from the middle of October. If I am lucky enough to be selected, I cannot guarantee runs and catches. Nobody can do that. But what I can absolutely guarantee is 100 percent commitment to the Proteas in every format of the game, as and when required. That was my promise when I made my debut in 2004, and that is my promise today.South Africa host Bangladesh (all formats), India (provisionally all formats) and Australia (Tests only) during the 2017-2018 season.Apart from his batting prowess, De Villiers bowls medium right-arm deliveries and has fulfilled the wicketkeeper role.

Spinning track alone won't win Australia Test, says Tamim

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal said Wednesday spinning track alone will not guarantee his teams success in the forthcoming two-Test series against Australia.Bangladesh beat England on a heavily turning pitch in their last home Test in October and a similar strategy could follow when they take on Australia in the first Test in Dhakas Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium from Sunday. It is not that we will win just by making spin tracks, Tamim told reporters in Dhaka.Even if there is support for the spinners in the wicket, still our spinners will have to bowl really well.Tamim added: Our batsmen also have to bat well as well as our pacers, who need to bowl well in these surfaces. If you want to see success then all these things have to work together. He warned Australia also had a top-quality spinner in Nathan Lyon.Opening batsman Tamim, also the vice-captain of Test squad, made a vital contribution in Bangladeshs 108-run win over England when he scored a crucial century in the first innings.Bangladesh have not played a Test against Australia since Ricky Pontings team visited the country in 2006, six years after they were granted Test status.Australia were due to play two Tests in Bangladesh in October 2015 but the tour was cancelled over security fears after a wave of attacks by Islamist extremists in the Muslim-majority nation.Cricket Australia agreed to reschedule the series this year only after Bangladesh promised a head-of-state style security for the visitors. The second Test will begin at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong from September 4.

Maxwell suffers mild heatstroke in Bangladesh

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Australia are feeling the heat just days before their first Test against Bangladesh for more than a decade, with batsman Glenn Maxwell revealing Wednesday he suffered heatstroke during training.I caught a bit of heatstroke on the first day, which wasnt a good start, Maxwell told reporters in Dhaka.I think just doing some running outside, then going inside to do some fitness tests, and then going back outside didnt help too much. The body shut down a little bit but I was fine after the ice bath and plenty of fluids.Australia, who arrived last Friday, limited themselves to light training Wednesday after their two-day warm-up match on the outskirts of Dhaka was cancelled due to flooding. But 28-year-old Maxwell said conditions were still a little difficult for the newly-arrived squad.Yesterday was obviously pretty tough with the overnight and morning rain, all the moisture coming out of the ground and making sweaty work for us, he said. The tourists trained in Darwin, in Australias tropical north, before their Bangladesh tour to prepare for the hot and humid monsoon weather. The wickets here are similar to what we faced in Darwin, where it was perfect, Maxwell said.I think the guys are more than well equipped to handle whatever comes their way in the first Test.Bangladesh have not played a Test against Australia since Ricky Pontings team visited the country in 2006, six years after the hosts were granted Test status.Australia were due to play two Tests in Bangladesh in October 2015 but the tour was cancelled over security fears after a wave of attacks by Islamist extremists in the Muslim-majority nation.Cricket Australia agreed to reschedule the series this year only after Bangladesh promised intensive security. The first Test starts on Sunday, with the second in Chittagong from September 4-8.

'Mismatch' but Law vows to fire Windies revival

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - West Indies coach Stuart Law insisted he was determined to oversee a change in the teams fortunes after a crushing first Test loss to England but admitted the series was a mismatch. The tourists head into Fridays second Test at Headingley 1-0 down in a three-match series after suffering a mammoth innings and 209-run defeat as the first day/night Test in Britain ended inside three days at Edgbaston on Saturday.Laws men lost 19 wickets on the third day, with England new-ball duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad doing most of the damage as the West Indies were skittled out for 168 and 137 in reply to the hosts 514 for eight declared.West Indies fast-bowling great Curtly Ambrose labelled the tourists performance totally embarrassing but, with the series now reverting to standard Test hours, Law was confident of an improved showing by his fledgling side.It is a mismatch in talent and a mismatch in experience, Law told reporters at Headingley on Wednesday.Having said that, we are going to make sure we understand we need to fight hard.We understand theres a lot of people out there who are disappointed in our performance. But I can tell you right now theres no one more disappointed than the dressing room themselves. We had a session up in Birmingham as well which highlighted the fact we are fair dinkum about turning this around, the former Australia batsman added. We had to bat against two pretty decent bowlers (Anderson and Broad) in favourable conditions under lights and when it was overcast. Taking that in, we understand weve got to be better and were aiming to do that.Quite how much progress the West Indies can make in just a few days remains to be seen, but Law said: The boys know its an attitude change. They need to want to stand up and fight and theyve all spoken about that. The 48-year-old Law, who took charge in February, indicated West Indies would retain the same XI.I think these guys need a chance to prove that they are good enough to play for the West Indies. Theyve got the opportunity to turn it around.Excluding matches against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, the West Indies have won just three out of 87 away Tests during the past 20 years. They arrived in England for this tour without several senior players, although the likes of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels will be available for the subsequent one-day series in a sign that a bitter dispute with Caribbean cricket chiefs may be coming to an end. They are young men, they havent played cricket in this part of the world, said Law.Its very difficult to play cricket (in England), particularly as a batsman, added Law, who enjoyed successful spells as a player with English counties Essex and Lancashire. Its a difficult game when you are playing against two guys (Anderson and Broad) whove got nearly 1,000 wickets in Test cricket and weve got guys playing their first games here. But Law insisted he supported his players 100 percent.I believe these guys have got the talent, he said. Its not going to happen overnight. We need them to understand that its difficult and we need people out there to understand its difficult. He added: International crickets pretty tough and in this part of the world, when you are playing against an experienced England side, its even tougher.Australia came here a couple of years ago, got bowled out for 60 (when England clinched the Ashes at Trent Bridge in 2015) so were not going too bad.

India court raps BCCI for inaction on reforms

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indias highest court Wednesday accused top officials from the countrys cricket board of failing to clean up the scandal-ridden body, more than six months after they pledged to enforce reforms. The Supreme Court ordered that the acting president, secretary and treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appear before a panel of judges on September 19 to explain their inaction. You havent implemented anything despite our orders. Nothing has been complied (with) and the BCCI says its helpless, the panel of three judges, headed by Justice Dipak Misra, said in its order. The board, a powerful and wealthy institution in cricket-mad India, was placed under court administration in January after a string of high-profile scandals brought its management into disrepute.A panel appointed to reform its opaque administration was given an undertaking from the acting president, secretary and treasurer that they would turn things around. But the court-appointed Committee of Administrators last week said the trio should be removed for failing to implement any of their promised reforms. The board has been accused over its management of the Indian Premier League, a glitzy Twenty20 competition that netted almost $380 million in revenue in 2016.The sixth season of the lucrative franchise was marred in 2013 by a match-fixing scandal when the son-in-law of then-board president Narayanaswami Srinivasan was accused of gambling on matches.

World's largest Samosa record smashed in London

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - The world record for the largest samosa was smashed in London on Tuesday by a whopping version of the popular Asian snack weighing in at 153.1 (337.5 pounds) kilogrammes.A dozen volunteers from the Muslim Aid UK charity built the giant samosa then deep-fried it in a custom-built vat at an East London Mosque.Adjudicators from Guinness World Records were on hand to oversee the process and certify that the mega-samosa passed the required tests. The previous record of 110.8 kg was set by Bradford College in northern England in June 2012.The samosa was built on a giant wire mesh, then winched into a vat of cooking oil before being hauled out to be weighed. My heart was beating really fast, said Farid Islam, 26, the project organiser. It was very tense. It looked like it was going to slide off. A crack appeared and I feared the worst, he told AFP.Thumbs-up verdictGuinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel spelled out the rules. Its got to be triangular; contain flour, potatoes, onions and peas; be fried, and retain the shape when cooked, he told AFP.Its got to look and feel like a samosa; its got to be edible by humans. The critical record is the net weight. Plus it all has to be eaten. No wastageAfter the team carefully made the triangle-shaped super-snack, it was hauled up to the industrial winch by the biggest men available and slowly plunged into the vat.Once it was winched out, and after the nervy weigh-in, the independent food safety officer, who had overseen proceedings, gave it the taste test. A simple thumbs-up triggered cheers around the hall.It was then down to Patel to tie up all the certification and deliver the verdict: 153.1 kg.Its an absolutely great achievement, he declared.Organiser Islam said it was a tough challenge.Initially I thought it would be a piece of cake: stuff it together, tie up the end and fry it, he said. When I realised there was not a single pot in the country that could hold that weight, we had to get something tailor made. The samosa took around 15 hours of work and was dished up into hundreds of portions distributed to the local homeless via the Salvation Army.

Trump hit by fresh resignation

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US government science envoy on Wednesday became the latest official to resign over Donald Trumps refusal to condemn neo-Nazis and the latest to send a coded message of defiance via his resignation letter.Daniel Kammen, who served as a state department envoy since 1996, said Trump had harmed the quality of life in the United States, our standing abroad, and the sustainability of the planet. But apparently it was Trumps equivocation about white supremacists who lead a deadly march in Charlottesville, Virginia that was the final straw. My decision to resign is in response to your attacks on the core values of the United States. Your failure to condemn white supremacists and neo-Nazis has domestic and international ramifications, Kammen wrote. But within the one page letter was a less obvious message -- an acrostic, with the first letter of each paragraph spelling IMPEACH.Kammen is the latest in a series of officials and panelists to resign their posts -- from members of the arts to business leaders -- and is not the first to deliver a hidden message in doing so.When the Presidents Committee on the Arts and the Humanities resigned en masse last week, the first letter of each paragraph of their letter spelled out RESIST -- a watchword for opponents of the Trump administration.
